  • This steel square was made to be used on the surface plate instead of my 10.000" tall granite square, this square is 6.500" tall with a wide base and has the same accuracy machined into it as the granite square making it more stable with less chances of tipping over

Beautiful work Doug. Thanks for sharing. And since people copying us is a great compliment, I promise to compliment you by making one as well. Gilles :)

Love it! I want one, too, but I'm not good enough to make it.

Very nice square for the Surface Plate. Beautifully made. Will have to add this to the long list of things to make. Love the indicator Stand as well. Love your work.

    Hi Doug,
I ran across some photos of the surface gage that you built and was wondering if you would be willing to share the drawings. I've been wanting to build one just like the one you have, but can't seem to track down any dimensions or drawing online. Beautiful work and thank you for sharing knowledge.

    Friend! I don't have a very thick stone (100mm). I have a lot of 20mm stones.
I intend to "work" 3 large diameter stones (1000mm X 1000mm). I think 20mm is too unstable for a big rock like that.
Can I glue several stones to get a more stable thickness?
I chose a harder black stone in my region of Brazil.
I also thought about making ribs in the shape of honeycombs between a sandwich of two 20mm stones.

Beautiful work! I found you through the Homemade Tools website where you posted your new shear. A homemade bench shear that can cut 1/8" steel easily is no small feat. Did you use a set of patterns to make your parts from? If so, are they available? Also just subscribed too, and hope to see more of your work. Thanks, Jerry

Doug, I saw your wood lathe build on Homemade Tools. U said u used a washing machine motor on it. I was wondering if u have a secret to wiring a washing machine motor to be able to control the speed so it doesn’t run full speed and when on low u still have torque?
    Thanks

You must have me confused with another builder on homemade tools.net, I never built a wood lathe on home made tools, there was a guy who did build one recently and had the wiring diagram for running different speeds on the motor but I don't remember who it was, you can have to go back to the archives and browse, thanks for asking, Doug

Beautiful work Doug. I'd like to see some of your surface grinder workflow & how you went about final tweaks if you do more of this super accurate stuff. Was the stock heat treated btw?

      Thanks Peter
I'll be starting a new project pretty soon which will require some more of that fussy grinding, I'll shoot a video of the process, the square was made from O-1 Tool Steel (which is oil hardening just in case you didn't know) the steel was hardened then tempered and precision ground.
      Thanks again
      Doug

Is that indicator base one you made or is it purchased off the shelf? Keep up the good work!

Thanks Nicholas, I made the indicator base, it's fabricated from a solid piece of C-40 cast iron
