I'm 61. I used to play Mr Blue Sky endlessly back in 1977 on the pub jukebox on the grey, wet days in the northern city of Carlisle. I never heard the full album at the time so what an absolute treat to discover this total gem and hear it today for the first time 45 years later. Its like discovering buried treasure from your childhood . This tune is exploding with life, melody and emotion .I love the happy/melancholic vibe . It is as fresh as daisy , I can almost taste 1977 on it. Should have been a number one, Many thanks to Jeff Lynne and ELO for this piece of timeless Starlight magic.

Raised on Jazz and Funk. Heard this song while driving thru the Mojave at 3am way back in 1979 on KSAN. Made me pull over and rewind the cassette so I could lay on the hood of my Gremlin and watch the stars go round......still good today.
Well it wasn't unknown to everyone who bought the album like myself, but yes they could have easily made just about any song on that album into a single. The whole album is fantastic!
I was born in 1962. I now realise we lived the happiest Life EVER IN HUMAN HISTORY. The end of the 70's, the 80's and the 90's were just living in Paradise. The World was led by the most pleasant face of the US. Those years we all became a bit USholics, anglophiles...and not without good reasons...being Music not least...I am Spanish, and those years, those decades, we had wonderful groups and pop musicians...but when we Talk about Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Supertramp, Alan Parsons and ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA...boy, that was something else...ELO performed dozens of songs I call The Songs of Velvet....so sweet, so perfect, so well designed...with violins, perfect percussion, perfect rythms, perfect synthecisers....I really love ELO and when I hear their songs I feel transported to those happy times in which WE ALL WERE SO FREE ..SO COMPLETELY FREE It is unthinkable these days...too bad at that time we never noticed It....

I keep trying to convince myself that the previous three albums are better overall works, but the flood of pop melodies on this album always impresses me. Just wish they had used the clearer production that they used on Face the Music.
I don't have favorite song by this band, 'cause all the songs and albums are a pain in the ass to be created and emulated. I mean the music of E.L.O. are very complex and hard. That's why i like it.

This was the song was one of several I used to pester him to replay, but definitely the most requested by me to the point he would catch me singing it while I was playing outside. Love you dad!!! ☺️
“Starlight”, one of my favorites from this album, and perhaps the *best vocal* performance on it. I really like the different spin Jeff gives at 2:25-2:45. Side notes: 1) All the “little girl” stuff reminds me of same in The Beatles’ “Run For Your Life”. 2) Nod to the Bee Gees at 3:41 to end?

This whole album. Man. My amazing dad introduced me to ELO via Out of the Blue when I was a little girl, and every song put my imagination into overdrive. This one, then and now, makes me think of a young man falling in love with a night fairy who does nothing but laugh and run away as he tries to catch her.
I did see Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra in New York 2016 Toronto in 2018 and 2019. This song is the catchiest on the album. Jeff Lynne was a GENIUS at coming up with melodies.

Great stuff!

So true. It´s just as you say, ELO takes me to another world

One of the best albums of the 70s
I’ve always loved Elo, but somehow this song has evaded me until today. Holy shit, this may be the band’s best tune ever! Absolutely in love ❤️
It's good, but the best? No way.
I say that about almost every ELO song!

There is so much smooth, and high level intelligent, creative genius melody in most of this

Very similar to the genius of Brian Wilson. Listen to Smile along with this album.

That's amazing❤
I totally agree with Alberto. I am 60 and it is simply a fact that the best music if all time was 76 -81
I would go back further to Elvis on up! The early 60's and early 1970's were just amazing, having lived through them all I can attest to that!
This song should be more well known. Its my favourite ELO song :)
I'm 14 and have been listening to ELO since I was 6. I'll make sure to keep this music alive.
The bass line on this song is just wonderful
