You really must do Brian May's version of this song from his solo album. The video version of it is excellent. Brian wrote this song about his marriage that was failing because he had been acting like a bachelor on the road, which of course is not a prescription for a healthy marriage. It truly was his guilt that ruined it all, because though they both still loved each other very much, things had gotten too complicated to repair. Brian then started having an affair and that was the point at which he became suicidal. He couldn't imagine his life living apart from his family but he also could not be faithful to his wife. Brian really puts his heart on display in this song and on his solo version, you can really hear it in his voice and see it on his face. The first time this song was ever performed for the public was by Brian at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at which time, the lyrics sort of took on a different meaning.

Brian suffered so much when Freddie and his father passed very close together. He said he was so depressed he nearly ended it all by driving off a bridge. 😢
Poor John Deacon is still suffering with depression and anxiety over Freddie’s death.
I think we all are to a point. We lost a part of our hearts when Freddie passed. We were all literally in shock.
He announced publicly he had AIDS on Nov. 23, 1991 and passed the next day.
He was a gift. Enjoy him. ❤

Having seen Brian in an interview talking about this song, he said it was written at a time when, yes, his marriage was ending, but also he had recently lost his father and Fred was dying, so it was an emotional outpouring. It's worth reacting to Brian's original version as you can see how these things in his life were pulling him in all directions.

Great to see you again!!! The original version was released as a single by Brian may on his album" Back to the Light " Brian sings on this one. Brian and Roger took lead vocals on quite a few Queen songs,they both had great voices. Nice to see your emotions triggered, hopefully in a good way lol.

a lot of queens songs are about Real life Struggles and people problems if you listen to them and read the lyrics as you listen Freddie was a very passionate and sensative man in his private life the only time he was ever bigger than life was when he was performing on stage. especially in the latter years of his life.

Please react to Brian’s version from his Back To The Light album… I love the Queen (Freddie vocals) version , but the song was originally Brian’s written about being torn between his first wife and falling in love with the woman who eventually became his second wife.
Freddie’s version is wonderful, but Brian’s version is raw emotion that’ll make ya speechless.

I love Freddie’s version just as much, the meaning takes a different vibe for Freddie. Brian put it all out there for the world, such a brave soul. I love that about the whole band, every song can be felt in so many ways. That is one of reasons Queen is loved by millions and millions, we all feel the humanity of their music.

It said that he could have been still around but back then HIV was a death sentence and there was no medication like today that could save your life and have a quality of life.He was truly a once in a lifetime artist and his contribution to music and how much he touched our hearts and soul is unquantifiable.

The lyrics are from Brian, he was going through a tough time personally, he was getting a divorce, it's not about Freddie. Listen to it by Brian and there you will realize what the lyrics are about, Freddie interprets it spectacularly but Brian does it with a lot of feeling and that beautiful voice he has.

….It’s true that Brian’s version of THIS song is EXCELLENT, too.
Even tho Bri wrote it about what was happening in his own life, it definitely applied to Freddie too. The lyrics of the song “Somebody To Love” really sum up his struggles: He told an interviewer that he lived “a solitary life” because he never knew who wanted to be with him for his fame and money instead of just for himself as a person… and one time, he exclaimed to his band mates that he would never be able to have what the three of them had - a spouse and family (because Gay marriage was illegal).
Mary Austin was a constant in his life, tho - he called her his “only friend“. And when he got together with Jim Hutton in 1985, Fred finally “settled down”… He always introduced Jim to friends as his (common law) husband. (If you notice in all of Freddie’s videos from 1985 onward - including Live Aid, he wore a “wedding band” on his RIGHT hand.) And after he got together with Jim, Fred also RETIRED “Somebody To Love” from the band’s set list in their shows.💕

This song was primarily written by Brian, with two co-writers who were not Queen members It was based on an extremely painful period in his life. Brian met and fell in love with his 2nd wife Anita while still married to Christie (who he shares 3 children with). Brian always saw himself as a family man who he loved his children. They last thing he wanted was to tear his family apart but he did and it tore him apart too.
Brian originally wrote this song for his solo album. However, it took him five years to write the songs for his album which wasn't released until 1992. In the meantime, he share the song with the members of Queen for their feedback and Freddie began singing it. Brian said when heard Freddie sing it, he knew that it should be released as a Queen song.
It was recorded for but did not appear on, their 1989 album The Miracle. It was included on the album "Made in Heaven" which was the last Queen album with Freddie's voice, released in 1995 after Freddie's death in 1991.
Regardless of what Brian was thinking when he wrote the song when hearing Freddie's interpretation one can not help but wonder if he was thinking about it differently. Freddie already knew at this point he was dying from AIDS and that his lifestyle with his many sexual partners was the reason.

The reason their songs have so much resonance is because they are writing about real things happening in their lives...I guess it tore Brian apart leaving his wife and starting a relationship with another woman, Anita Dobson who used to star on the British soap called Coronation Street...Queen parodied this show when they dressed up as women for their video: I Want to Break Free. Another song SCANDAL , also written by Brian how the media hounded him when he left his first wife for Anita

Brian's version is so real , you can actually see the sadness in his eyes in the video . He was actually going through a rough time with depression , divorce,loss of Freddie etc.

As people have said, Brian's version is amazing (better), HE wrote this song about his marriage and relationship issues. Its taken new meaning with Freddie's passing. But Brian singing it is a gut punch of feelings.

If Freddie was not in the band Queen, there would have never been the group Quuen.
Beautiful song, the only problem with this song and a lot of Queen songs is they don’t fall neatly into any genre.
Part of the 2nd verse is missing - perhaps another example of Freddie not being well enough to complete the recording.
And if this song brings out your emotions, then brace yourself for "Say it's not true," a Roger Taylor song about receiving a letter from a loved one who's just been diagnosed with AIDS.

Sadly Freddie was actually dead by the time this version came out - they re-created his voice for this version and I think it hit #2 in the charts in about 1995 (i think).
Brian May's version wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't as powerful as Freddie's... must say it's interesting, as I've heard a lot of AI recreations of his voice this year and none of them come as close to Freddie's power and passion as this track.
Freddie is irreplaceable and I think you only have to hear a few of Queen's most spectacular hits to appreciate why. Highly recommend going now to "Hammer to Fall" and "Who Wants To Live Forever?"
