Pavarotti criticized Montserrat for singing with Freddie and then he does this. Omg, no Winter's tale, no Mother love 😔 I guess the last one will be The show must go on. Great Queen series. Thank you.
The Pavarotti surprise definitely wishes you would checkout Skunk Anansie's You'll Follow Me Down, which he ALSO sang a wonderful live duet with! Well worth the listen, I assure you! IMO, Skin has one of the greatest female singing voices of all time and fits so well with Pavarotti! :)
My first exposure of this song was on a Got Talent competition in the Philippines, sang by Jovit Baldivino as his winning piece, I thought at first this song was originally sang by an 80's rock band then discovered the Queen original as well as Brian May's take on this, great song to listen to and to pour one's heart out
This one surprised me. I wonder which version, or perhaps both Freddie’s and Brian’s for comparison. These are the Days, (the last video with Freddie), A Winter’s Tale, (the last song Freddie composed), Mother Love, (the last song Freddie recorded but didn’t complete) and No One But You (Only the Good Die Young) the Queen song without Freddie. How do you choose?
@@AliT0555 you can't choose. You listen to them all ... But for TMLWKY I would like to hear Brian's voice because it's originally his song, expressing his emotions of turmoil in his life back then...
We all know which song will be last, but Vlad made some really weird choises in this Queen 50 journey. And there is studio version of Too Much Love Will Kill You with Brian on vocals.
It's a shame that none of the "Made in Heaven" songs made it into the top 50. It's one of my favorite Queen albums. This album, released after Freddy's death, but still with Freddy's participation, contains some of the most moving and touching songs by Queen and Freddy Mercury. For example Made in Heaven (!), Mother Love, I Was Born to Love You, Heaven for Everyone, You Don't Fool Me, A Winters Tale. Please continue a little bit more...😘
Brian wrote this song in the late 80s about the demise of his first marriage, largely in part to falling in love with British actress Anita Dobson, his current wife. This version was recorded while Queen was making The Miracle album. This was the first album where all their writing credits were labeled as “Queen,” so they could split the royalties evenly. But this song was in conflict with that, since Brian wrote it with a couple guys outside of Queen. Thus, it is not a part of The Miracle or even their next album Innuendo. The first time the public got to hear this song was at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, where Brian performed it all by himself on keys. Brian then recorded a softer ballad version, with a Spanish guitar type solo, for his first solo album, Back To The Light from 1993, which he performed on the subsequent tour. Sometime not long after that tour, Roger convinced Brian to assess what unfinished recordings they had with Freddie’s voice & see what they could do with them. Thus came the album Made In Heaven in 1995, also turning a couple of Freddie’s solo hits into Queen songs. Since Freddie was now dead & John had moved on from the band, there was no longer a need to attribute each song as written by Queen, so they decided to include the Freddie version of this song.
@@celtasnake any opinion of that matter is equally legit … but if you care about statistics, I would think most fans would include this song in their top 20 of queen at the very least
@@Jadido7 Well. i know quite a few hardcore Queen fans and none of them have it in their top. But that was not what i was talking about. I think a better way to end the series was with some other choices.
The Freddie version was released on the poshumous "Made In Heaven" album. There's at least 2-3 songs on that album worth reviewing as well. Freddie's vocals are excellent, but this is a very personal Brian May song, so of course I prefer his own album version of this song... Not sure who came up with the idea of having Luciano Pavarotti duet with May on this one. Seems a bit misplaced compared to music that was actually written with an operatic interpretation in mind - like Freddie's 'Barcelona' album. Some works of music would actually sound a lot more anonymous without a very distinctive synthesizer instrumentation, and some sounds/atmospheres are downright impossible to replicate with acoustic instruments - isn't an electric guitar also a 'synthetic' instrument by the way? Angelo Badalamenti's score for the 'Twin Peaks' TV series is a great example. Also, Vangelis' instrumental works like 'Blade Runner', 'Opera Sauvage' and '1492 - Conquest of Paradise' all have a very distinctive sound that just wouldn't work with regular symphonic instruments.
If we consider chronology when we try to figure out which version is the original we might get into trouble with this one. The Queen version was recorded in 1989? But not released until 1995. Brian sang is live in April of 1992. Brian’s studio version was released in September 1992. The duet with Pavarotti was in 2003. Going for ”seen to the public eye first” Brian at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert wins followed by Brian’s studio version. The Queen version comes in at number three and Pavarotti last at number four. But if we go for ”recorded” the Queen version wins. But is any of them a ”cover” as all these versions contain at least the writer of the song? Amy touched on this issue but it was not resolved, was it? If a different version of a song is released, let us say a live version, an unplugged version or a remixed/remastered one - is that to be considered a ”cover” as it is not the original version even if all the personnel are the same? Can you ”cover” yourself? It is much easier when a totally different artist sing a song. When Angelina Jordan sang ”Bohemian Rhapsody” she did a ”cover” of the song. Some say that any version of a song done after the first recording is a ”cover” no matter what. Even by the same artist. We could also argue that any version of the song after the first release is a ”cover” no matter what. This might lead to totally different conclusions? Either that any version after the Queen version is a ”cover” (recording date) or that any version after the Brian May version (release date) is a ”cover”. Either the Brian May version or the Queen version? And has nothing to do with which version you love the most.
There are times when I prefer Brian's version over Freddie's (All dead all dead, for instance) but this isn't one of them. And I'm not too fond of his collaboration with Pavarotti, for several reasons. I agree, however, that he writes wonderful ballads and is probably the best lyricist of the band. As many others, I hope you'll give a chance to some of the songs you've missed. I also think you would enjoy listening to Freddie in Ensueño, one of the tracks he did with Caballé and probably the only time when he really tried to sound like a proper opera singer. And he did it in flawless Spanish!!
Love the channel, love the videos, best analysis on youtube. But it is important to get somethings correct, the thumbnail is wrong. This song was never on the Innuendo album, it is from the following album Made in Heaven
It's next. (info from Amy's Patreon).... and probably the last because TMLWKY isn't from the Innuendo album (it's Brian's song, but with Freddie on vocals it was released on the Made in Heaven album)
@@iris67si Thanks. It's good to know that only the chronological order of publication of the songs was changed and that this cycle of 50 Queen songs will end with "Show Must Go On." It seems strange to me that for TMLWKY the cover of the album "Innuendo" was used and not that of "Made in Heaven" or at least that of "The Miracle" where the song was originally planned to be included.
Amy has already reviewed Barcelona. Go to Amy’s video list. About a year ago she reviewed Barcelona under the title of “50 Years of Queen.” It’s a must watch ❤
Oh,, well, “A Winter’s Tale” won’t be included. I have to remind myself that this is a “Queen” series, not a Freddie Mercury journey. However, as we come to the end of Queen as a quartet, the focus, naturally, turns to Freddie and what he composed and performed in his final days with Queen.
I prefer Brian singing this song to Freddie. It’s the only time I will ever say that. It’s a song that is so personal to him that it has more feeling when he sings it. Brian’s version at the Freddie tribute concert is the best live version.
Brian’s version is so much better, but it’s good to have this one with Freddie’s vocals. Hope you could react to “A winter’s tale”, the last song that Freddie sung for Queen in his lifetime
I thought Mother Love was the last track he worked on, since he was too ill to return to the studio after 16 May 1991. It's certainly what Brian claims on his website.
Is a great song, but in fact Too much love... isn't a Queen song at all. And not a Brian May song too. It was made by May, Musker and Lamers. And May explained that Freddie didn't want to pay royalties to people out from Queen, so it was not included in any Queen record while he was alive. It's there, it's important, but... " A winter's tale" or "Mother love" makes more sense for the final of Freddie's mortal life.
This song is an excellent composition, but I think you really need to do Brian May's solo version. You will know why myself and others have recommended it. Brian seems to show a vulnerability which is evident by the way he shakes his head like you saw in the Pavarotti duet.
This is the Brian's version, there is only one version, they just changed some arrangements. I still remember I have one of those cd compilations top whatever back then where it was Brian May - Too Much Love will kill you. But Freddie made it better without a doubt.
Yeah, I think you're right in that the guitar solo sticks out a bit, like that's where the real feeling of despair of the impossible choice is in, as Brian's the one who's been living that. Brian's own version, that we first heard at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert and then on his solo (or rather The Brian May Band) album hits much harder. There's real pain in it, where Freddie's version, though he's obviously the perfect singer, lacks the "livedness" that shines through with Brian. I don't think the live version you were shown here truly did something for the song. Should've been the Tribute concert version. Pavarotti's great and all, but it doesn't meld well with the song or Brian.
I'm afraid I agree with the majority of the comments here, an odd choice Vlad. Don't get me wrong it's a fabulous song with Freddie in fine voice and a blistering guitar solo, however, I expected The Show Must Go On and then perhaps Mother Love
Why to put some waste such as "I can't live with you" on the list, leaving behind whole "Made in Heaven" LP (only picking "TMLWKY" from it as a part of Innuendo which it wasn't)? I'd say it's a shame. Vlad, how about "Winter's tale", "Mother Love", "Let me live", among others?... IMHO Brian's solo version of "Too Much Love Will Kill" works better because of the highly involved and emotional vocal interpretation, as much as an arrangement of the original works better as a whole.
I really like this song. Not the right song to analyze in my opinion just because that's one of those not-originally composed apositly for this album but anyway it works. Composed in 1988 and recorded by Freddie in Jan. 1989. The video Show the Big Maestro Luciano during his 'Pavarotti and Friends' (witch remind me a lot the Freddie Mercury and Monserrat Caballe duet). A real fall in style for such an Opera monster but functional in the Freddie's point of view about this kind of commistions of genres. During the years 1987-88 a lot of people criticize Mercury-Caballet duet and just less than 10 years later it's been reprized by Pavarotti entourage.
I enjoy listening to Pavarotti but as far as Freddie is concerned I promise i'm not being partial. I think both May AND Pavarotti struggled with this. They struggled in contrast with Freddie's effortless soaring voice. I still enjoyed it though.
About everything in life? Yes or just the specific singer? Yes again - though I actually like Sir Bri's more because of its heart-felt exposition, despite Freddie being brill, as ever.

Cover for Sure, 1st time Hearing thx❤
SURPRISE!!! I closed my eyes alone with you and was shocked to hear his voice. I didn't know this recording existed. I'll have some fun trying to find it on the web.
Well done.... Virgin Rock
❤❤❤❤❤
This song is not on the _Innuendo_ album, so the thumbnail is a bit odd.
Good point.
On made in heaven though!
Pavarotti did a whole album singing rock songs with their original artists. I highly recommend he and James Brown singing "Man's World"
I've always preferred the version Brian May recorded for his solo album.
Brian expressed the emotion of the circumstance better because he had lived it.
Pavarotti criticized Montserrat for singing with Freddie and then he does this. Omg, no Winter's tale, no Mother love 😔 I guess the last one will be The show must go on. Great Queen series. Thank you.
Perhaps envious of the reaction Freddie and Montserrat received.
@@JanS1Pavarotti later or earlier sang with Bono from U2. I guess he had to loosen up a little bit… for emotion is emotion
Beautiful
My first exposure of this song was on a Got Talent competition in the Philippines, sang by Jovit Baldivino as his winning piece, I thought at first this song was originally sang by an 80's rock band then discovered the Queen original as well as Brian May's take on this, great song to listen to and to pour one's heart out
one of my fav queen songs, and glad you got to this cause it's more of a deep cut
Zugabe, Zugabe!
As #50 the song "The Show Must Go On" is a way better end for this serie!
@@AliT0555 Mother Love is a good song to react.
You must listen to both versions obviously. I prefer Freddie singing, but Brian's is still very good.
@@vohbovohborian28 My preferrred version is the live version at Brixton academy by Brian.
You MUST check Brian’s solo version. ❤
I prefer his version, personally.
@@GusGoosegrease Me too.
@@GusGoosegreaseMe too. It's in Brian's "Back to the Light" album, which I have on CD.
@@MiscellanyTopx2
Totally agree, I much prefer Brian’s version
We all know which song will be last, but Vlad made some really weird choises in this Queen 50 journey. And there is studio version of Too Much Love Will Kill You with Brian on vocals.
From the album Back to the Light. Track 5
I was there in Modena in 2003, listen it live, an amazing moment.
Maybe it is because I heard Brian's version first and knew the story behind it,I love his version best.
Please continue a little bit more...😘
In my view May's version from his earlier solo album is the best version. He makes it really touch your heart.
This is from Made in heaven.
Enjoyed that
Another one of their best ever
I have the Brian May version on his solo album. A very moving song indeed.
more of a flamenco style guitar solo
There can only be one song to finish this series, and I think I know which one.
it was smart to chose the show must go on as the last piece of the 50 series, well done Vlad
I think it is a terrible idea. Not one of Queen´s best songs.
@@celtasnake that’s your opinion I guess
@@Jadido7 And as good as yours.
Jeff Buckley - Lover you should've come over. Great artist and song!
It was about Freddie too, trust me.
Too much love will kill you wasn’t on innuendo
Please react to The Prophet's Song, by Queen. You will not be dissapointed.
Good point on the lighter music.. the bass also is a bit higher pitched at the start.
Bless you for highlighting the bass and drums
Vocals.. (some)..."angry" Freddie?
And what happened with "The Show Must Go On" ? 😢
As The Doors said "this is the end... the only end, my friend..."😢
@@lapsustemporalbut it should end logicaly with Mother's love.
Brian's version was more dramatic. This one sounds somehow less emotional. Only Freddie's performance is excellent.
Yes, May's version makes me cry which makes it really heard to play and sing with my guitar.
It’s about May’s relationships so of course his version will be more emotional.
@@SimonT-xo7qf I know
You should listen to Brian May's aolo (studio) version. I prefer that to this one.
This version is nice, but Brian's solo version of this song is the best version. It's very emotional since it was his own story.
It's an excellent song. I prefer it with the real piano. The synth sound puts it squarely in the '80's. Without that, it sounds timeless.
Brian won an award for this
Shame Brian’s solo version is not used. It’s the superior version. I mean Freddie has the better voice but Brian Lives the song
Talking about great covers, you should listen to Somebody to Love performed by George Michael in the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert ❤
If you’ve never heard Barcelona, an operatic duet written by Freddie, and sung by Freddie and Montserrat Caballé; I highly recommend it.
Hope you could react to “A winter’s tale”, the last song that Freddie sung for Queen in his lifetime
no better
I thought Mother Love was the last track he worked on, since he was too ill to return to the studio after 16 May 1991. It's certainly what Brian claims on his website.
@@rog2224 yeah mother love is the last ever song he did, a winter's tale was the last one Freddie wrote.
No, no no, no! You may like Brian's version more, but this is definitely better.
@@AndresGrimace I heard Brian’s first and it was love at first hearing. Freddie’s is not bad at all. He did a great job indeed
have you checked out the brand new as of yesterday Queen 1 2024 mix?
Please react the golden boy Freddie Mercury + Montserrat cabale before the queen series finishes
Please, react to "Mother Love": the last song that Freddie sang before die. By the way, excellent video as always.
Good research! (May did adapt it).
next time react to 'the march of the black queen'. just amazing
Fantastic choice!! Rock isn't better than that. (Daily Doug has done it, here on YT)
This song is an excellent composition, but I think you really need to do Brian May's solo version. You will know why myself and others have recommended it. Brian seems to show a vulnerability which is evident by the way he shakes his head like you saw in the Pavarotti duet.
Brian's version (Back to the Light) was much better.
Was it worth it should be listen ed to
Are you guys saving the show must go on to the end of the series?
I'm afraid I agree with the majority of the comments here, an odd choice Vlad. Don't get me wrong it's a fabulous song with Freddie in fine voice and a blistering guitar solo, however, I expected The Show Must Go On and then perhaps Mother Love
Odd choice. I always felt that Freddie's vocal was just an unused demo on this finished version.
Brian May’s version is superior
don't forget to react to was it all worth it (miracle album) please!
I don't think it was Brians wish to sing with Paverotti. He was so nervous.
brian and foger did this live with pavarotti
Why to put some waste such as "I can't live with you" on the list, leaving behind whole "Made in Heaven" LP (only picking "TMLWKY" from it as a part of Innuendo which it wasn't)? I'd say it's a shame. Vlad, how about "Winter's tale", "Mother Love", "Let me live", among others?...
IMHO Brian's solo version of "Too Much Love Will Kill" works better because of the highly involved and emotional vocal interpretation, as much as an arrangement of the original works better as a whole.
Brian's album Back to the Light was rather good.
You must be British! That’s such an English turn of phrase. 😁
Amy needs to go listen to the Brian May studio version.
Please, listen "Let Me Live". Thankyou.
Please React to Yngwie Malmsteen. 4he God of guitar melting Vivaldi, Bach and Paganini in to a soaring guitar masterpieces.
I enjoy listening to Pavarotti but as far as Freddie is concerned I promise i'm not being partial. I think both May AND Pavarotti struggled with this. They struggled in contrast with Freddie's effortless soaring voice. I still enjoyed it though.
Anyone else been as confused as I've been?
About everything in life? Yes or just the specific singer? Yes again - though I actually like Sir Bri's more because of its heart-felt exposition, despite Freddie being brill, as ever.
I would have loved a song with Freddies vocals a bit more appreciated as a closeup….
