Coming in to court is voluntary, in most cases. The majority of defendants come in to fight their ticket because they felt they were wrongly ticketed, or they have an excuse they'd like the judge to consider. People do have the option to mail in their payment.
These are real people, not actors. Please keep that in mind when you comment. They don't deserve negative scrutiny. Thank you.

I think this guy is already on a positive life path. That Judge has nothing to do with that. He's applying to Georgetown University, which is one of the most selective colleges in the country. The average GPA at Georgetown is 4.03. With a GPA of 4.03, Georgetown requires you to be at the top of your class. You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. You should also have taken plenty of AP or IB classes to show your ability to excel in academic challenge.

i got a ticket in a county outside my own and was waiting in a courtroom where the judge asked about the personal life of everybody that approached the podium. i was kind of excited because i felt i was on a successful track in college with high aspirations and i was sure the judge would be impressed and have leniency. when i got up there, he asked what i was studying, i told him International Relations. he asked what courses i was taking that semester, and I told him I was auditing Arabic courses. he asked why I was auditing that instead of enrolled for credit, and I explained that because the university offers auditing courses for free if you are a full-time student, and i had already completed the courses, I wanted to stay refreshed in the language since I had taken all the university had offered. The bastard called me a liar! He said, no the university doesn't do that. So i'm put on the defensive immediately, like... i'm a student there, i know what the university rules are and what does it fucking matter anyways? i didn't say that, but i was baffled the judge was giving me a hard time. he turned out to be a real dick. i got community service but no papers and no deadline to complete it, so i said screw it and didn't do it.

The ultimate father figure is God- I know many people preach and say various things that may or may not have resonated. But there is a divine book created by a divine Heavenly Father who loves you dearly and has a personal stake in your well being, along with being your creator. You can develop a personal relationship with him and get direct, divine guidance. I wanted guidance too and looked everywhere, various religions, trusted various people, various philosophies, worldviews, outlooks- but it was never enough because I'd notice pitfalls, or inconsistencies in logic, things that just didn't make sense, or things that hurt my heart like hypocrisy, people falling into their own flawed human nature etc. These things led me through a dark dark place that I was scared to live in. I haven't figured everything out, still not super well versed in the Bible, don't even know that much about the religion- really, but the only thing that has brought me peace is developing a relationship with God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I used to encourage everyone to go through their own journey, follow their own path to God, get there through various means, but in my experience all I've encountered is misery and sadness, seeking so earnestly but I hadn't seen any success, personally it was a disastrous practice in my life, but gratefully it brought me back to a more stable belief, consistent guidance, and hopefully a relationship with the Heavenly Father. I'm not trying to force you to do anything, I just always share this with people looking for guidance because I've personally experienced looking for guidance in the wrong places and really falling down some very dark holes. Not saying that's what you're doing, cause this judge does seem like a wise guy- but just sharing my experience in order to help.

This judge has just given 2 ordinary people some respect - tells the boy he's doing good for going to college, and tells the mom she has done a good job raising him, this brought me to tears I admit.
He doesn't just let him off, he says I'm going to make sure you graduate - I am in awe of this judge, how he handles these cases.
