    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

    Dr. Bill, I want to thank you for your dedication to making ASL learning so accessible. Years ago, as just a young kid, I stumbled upon your website and thought it was so awesome to be able to learn sign language online. I used your lessons and learned some vocab but didn’t get very far as a 10 year old with nobody to practice with. Now I’m in college and decided to commit to learning ASL, and was so excited when I recognized you on UA-cam like an old friend! You deserve much more than a broke college student like me can give, but when I’m able I won’t hesitate to donate. You truly are an incredible teacher, thank you :)

      Thank you for sharing your comment!
      As you go about learning ASL this time do what you can to increase your opportunities to actually use it. Some ideas:
      Google "Deaf Events near me" and see what turns up. Start (or continue) watching Deaf Newscasts.
      Do searches online for your state's "Association of the Deaf" and then go.
      Seek out your state's RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) chapter (if you want to become an interpreter)
      Search for "Deaf Church near me" (if you are into religion).
      Check "meetup (dot) com" for any "ASL meetups" in your area -- or pay the fee and set up your own ASL meetup and see who shows up (ask them for donations to help pay the meetup(dot)com fee going forward).
      Set up your own study groups by asking the teacher for permission (or just go ahead and do it) to write a blurb on the whiteboard or post in the hall a time and a place to practice your lessons (at the library or wherever). Make sure you arrange with at least one other student (so you'll have someone to practice with) to both show up (a bit early) to that place.
      Hire a local Deaf ASL instructor and offer small-group ASL classes in your home (apartment, dorm) or some other location. Charge the participants a bit of tuition to help pay the instructor fee.
      Check Facebook for any Deaf hobby groups such as "Deaf Hiking" groups, etc. Search for the word Deaf and the name of your City in the Facebook search box.
      Search for "ASL socials near me."
      If you can't find any ASL socials near you -- set up your own "ASL Social" and invite Deaf people to come. Try to get at least one skilled Deaf signer. Be clear with that person that they are the "anchor" (main draw) for the social and as such you will pay for their coffee or meal. (Again, seek donations from participants to help pay so it isn't all out of your pocket as a starving college student). Regardless, the cost of a meal is a tuition bargain considering the amount of sign language you will learn. Ask them to inform you ASAP if for some reason they can't show up to the social. Consider setting up an email news list for those who do show up to the social to let them know of any changes to the schedule, location, or other related information.
      If you enjoy working with young people, consider volunteering at a Deaf organization. Contact any local well-recognized long-succeeding youth-focused organizations and provide them with your contact information and desire to become a mentor for any local Deaf youth who might appreciate or benefit from an additional caring adult in their life.
      Check to see if there are any Deaf Education programs in your area and then apply to become a volunteer. Get fingerprinted and the whole bit. Do fundraisers for that program. If you are amazing at fundraising and/or organizing (or if you just have a lot of grit and persistence) consider forming a local Deaf-centric fundraising team to support any local Deaf Summer Camps, Deaf Space Camps, or other events serving Deaf youth in your area.
      If and when disappointments happen, shrug your shoulders, sign THAT LIFE! -- and set your gaze on your next ASL-related adventure.

      Having Deaf coworkers for the past year truly built up my signing confidence sooooo-much, also a few Deaf customers, we communicate, it's like having random expressive/receptive ASL tests all the time.

    Bill! My high school offers 3 years of American Sign Language (unfortunately, we don’t have enough teachers for all 4 years). We use lifeprint so much (as well as GIFS and screenshots of lifeprint) that you’re an ICON in our ASL 3 class! You’ve been so helpful in our journey of learning ASL and you’ve been such a helpful resource for us. Thank you! 💜

    Short lists like this are soooo useful for new signers to dip-toe-in, get started communicate right-a-way, that's the best way to learn, super simple, just enough for everyone~

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  9 місяців тому

      Thanks. Of interest (to me and possibly others) is that those particular vocabulary items were some of the most searched for at my website (Lifeprint). So I figured I'd go ahead and make a quick video of those signs. Later I want to do more investigation into which signs are the "most searched for."

    • @thrivinginamber2642
      @thrivinginamber2642 9 місяців тому

      Yeah, I've often wondered what the short short list for non-signers would be, for most effective communication, would be aimed at who often cross paths with Deaf, but who not make life commitment to ASL. My Deaf coworker asks so often which hours I work that we just flash numbers between each other, shorthand, same with her and another Hearing coworker who isn't in the rabbit-hole too deep. I went full-on rabbit-hole as my motivation was fear of going deaf, which is now a much smaller part. People say I improve ASL, but really, ASL improve me, feel, think, move, all connect-strong, focus, become expression, confidence, pride, passion, live, supports-me, integral-me~
