Don’t know if you know who Vice Grip Garage is but I swear you could be brothers or first cousins. You are both a riot. I Binged watched his whole channel. What 47 year old, old lady does that? I don’t even work on my own cars. But I’m confident I can change my oil, brakes and drop an engine at this point. 😂
Love how you turn your hand to so many things and allow Corbin to get involved too! He's really becoming a very handy helper! Well done for taking the time with him now. xx
You need to add close cell foam and mass loaded vinyl on top of the sound deadening material if you want to see a huge difference as kilmat is a sound deadener not a sound blocker
I watch all your videos. I think you and your wife are amazing. Most of all I love that you’re boys always want to help and you allow them to. A lot of dad’s don’t want to be bothered while doing a project. Once again amazing father you are!
Looked into sound minimizing my 6.0 excursion and found most people saying that up the fire wall is the most necessary part of the process. Also double layering in that section makes a big difference. Also new door weatherstripping had a big effect as well.
Just keep in mind that most road noise comes from 1) engine/engine bay and 2) tires/wheel arches. So if you are doing this type of project again focus on those two areas.
I actually read somewhere that most of the noise on our trucks comes through the roof surprisingly enough. The headliner would be awful to remove but it might be worth it. Check your door seals, they collapse and let a LOT of noise in. There’s a “fix” for that using surgical tubing that dropped the sound in my Ex by 3db.
I have an 7.3 liter diesel Excursion and I fixed all my weatherstripping on all 4 doors. I ran surgical tubing through the old weatherstripping and it made a huge improvement. Now the doors shut properly and SEAL properly. When the door seals correctly, road noise disappears. There's no more rattles coming from the doors either. Buy an electrician's fishing tape, surgical tubing and silicone lubricant to pull the surgical tubing through the weatherstripping. There's a video on youtube of a Ford F250 doing this project. Super easy with the right tools and approach. Makes a big improvement and doesn't cost much.
Tom, you do FINE work and Jr. is a rolling fiend but the only way to quieten that thing down is to run it with the engine turned off. And I heard that music on something else and automatically thought about YOU! And Toots was watching Dawn and you were next! A-PLUS and GBWYall!
Thanks for showing us this,, I've just found out that sticking all that expensive sound deadening stuff on your car, is a total waste of money,, ha ha ha,, you've just saved me a ton of money, and wasted time,,, thank you so much....
watched the whole thing, buddy! lot of work. thanks for this. fixing to do my 96 cclb.gotta find another 40/20/40 seat in good condition cause I think yours is just badass! never even thought of that! stay down and enjoy your OBS!!
Your son is adorable and a diligent worker! I'd hire him any day. This is the best way to learn - watching parents work. I was surprised he was not rolling out the Noico on the door panels but then saw him rolling away on the flooring. Fun job for a kid. He also traded in his sandals for proper shoes around tools, smart boy! I think most of your sound is coming from under the hood. Some Dynamat or Kilmat should help.
Oh my glory that was a lot of work! I admire your motivation and willingness to stick with a project to the end. And it was such a treat to see how much Corbin has absorbed through the years of accompanying and helping you. Love the teamwork! Loads of admiration. Thanks for taking the time to shoot, edit, and share. (In my 70’s now I so appreciate Corbin’s dexterity and limberness).
The best thing you can do is go with a quiet muffler and tires like nitto ridge grapplers. Finally if you are really motivated, insulate the firewall abs under the hood, and under the headliner. The way ford makes their SUV’s quieter today is a combination better motor, body mounts… better aerodynamics, sound reduction glass, and the judicious use of sound reducing materials. The difference in noise from a 2008 F-150 king ranch to a 2009 king ranch is substantial! The difference between the 2014 f-150 and the 2015 f-150 is monumental. And again the difference between a 2020 f-150 and the 2021 is evolutionary, an improvement but minor. If someone would make an aftermarket stereo for older vehicles that incorporated noise canceling technologies…. We could see an huge improvement in older vehicles. I don’t know if this will happen. But if someone develops this kind of tech, it will most certainly sell well.
Great attempt but missing 2 additional layers. For sound deadner only need 1/3 coverage, then add 100% closed end foam, then Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) for the final layer. The MLV needs to seal the whole floor.
Using A weighting for road noise, road noise frequencies are in 800 to 1200Hz. Killmat would stop some vibration, but not very effective at blocking low frequencies under 500Hz, which are generated by your diesel engine.
Nice work on the Excursion. I got a 05 with the v10 gasser that ive put some work into. Me being from the twin cities, its a never ending battle with the rust so ive been coating it every fall with fluid film to try and save it. I ended up replacing all 4 calipers after one seized up on me. ford calipers of those years are notorious for sticking. Anyways, keep up the awesome vids!
Honestly looks like a lot of work for very little difference. Thanks for sharing. Think I'm going to try Siles liner pro it's 200mil thick for about $20 more a box.
The way it works - it changes the resonance frequency of panels. Like your panels become more Ridgid, and for the engine you need to take out the dash...or do something about firewall inside engine compartment. Sounds that get inside the car will reflect from this hard material, and interior clothing will absorb some frequencies.
In my experience, sound deadening from Amazon Basics + a new carpet with kill mat dropped mine from 77 max db to 56 max db. I also did the firewall which is 90% of the sound. If you don't do the firewall, it's a huge waste of money unless you're chillin in the back.
No. Don't just keep adding the wrong material. Use decoupled mlv. Cld is not a sound blocker, it's job is only to reduce panel resonance, not stop the sound passing through it.
Needs some closed cell foam, ditch the tires, and make sure your exhaust doesn’t have drone. Drone is caused by exhaust pulses and the engineered length of your exhaust. Hence you can install a U pipe downstream thus effectively lengthening the exhaust. Drone happens in all exhaust. You just want to make it happen in the higher rpm range where you are rarely ever at for any amount of time. Takes some work but worth the effort 👍🏻 good video
the problem is you need to do the firewall on the engine side, and then the rear corner on the exhaust side needs covered so it doesn't let sound through in that wheelwell area... also the roof will change a lot because its only got a headliner whereas the floor already had carpeting stuff.
Just got a 05 excursion 6.0 I just want to make the engine alittle more quiter any thoughts or a video, are you running wheel spacers? :-) I'm in California
Start with the hood. Engine noise is the loudest part of these trucks, unfortunately unless your are willing to remove entire dash you are going to get sound penetration. The windshield can not really be altered either. The turbo, up pipes, and downpipe are at the back of the motor essentially against the firewall and below the windshield. The hood is an easy job, and would be a good first step
hello, so faar i see something wrong with your work.. The product you use is not a isolator, its a vibration dampener, its made to remove vibration noice from panels, its preventing some noice but if you wanna remove more noice, youll need to add isolation/noice blocking on the doors and onto the dempening material, i would put the time on adding it to the firewall, im going to install 2mm vibromat and a 35mm isolator piece on the firewall to stop noice from the engine and the front of the car :)
you seem so disappointed by the results you obtained. you may no know that decibels are measured on an exponential scale in the base of 10, A 3 DB drop is half of the original noise. I think that is quite satisfactory.
Ceramic tint the windows, even the windshield! I promise it will cut a lot more sound! Your challenge is that loud diesel engine...hopefully the overall sounds "feel" nicer to you, despite your loud engine overpowering your decibel reader
If you do end up considering it again, using the correct material, decoupled mlv, would make a difference. Also the firewall and wheel wells are target areas, but 100% coverage is really optimal, leaving spaces untreated let's a lot of noise back in.
Just curious about your Excursion...if you are pulling a camper, do you have trailer brakes? Just curious when I saw you were having brake issues when pulling the camper. IF you don't, pulling a trailer without them will burn up brakes quickly! You probably do but just thought I'd ask!
Kind of, it's made to stop panel resonance, which energy from a sound system can be a cause of said resonance, so yeah, not made to stop noise, that's what decoupled mlv is for
Why didn't put any sound deadening inside doors?and on the floors you can add some carpet underlayment this will help will soundproofing. Kilmat is just removing resonance from metal but on excursion metal is thick and don't really have a lot of resonance
Radiator leaks... Four lights flashing on the dash... Brakes are fried... Today we are going to take care of the one that bothers me the most... let's make it quieter.
Seems to me the majority of the excessive noise was coming from the engine, so that's probably the area that needs working on, bulkhead, under bonnet etc.
SHLM UHaB (peace & love). Oh Tom, I so enjoy you and your wife. You both are so precious and real. Thank y'all for just being y'all. I heard from previous videos on wife's station, that y'all are considering Foster Care. That is precious. Now I wanted to say this. I encourage you dearly, to read the TURaH to your family. The Word is not intended to be mostly the New Testament, even though the religion of Christianity does that. I am a Hebrew, but not of the Hebrew Israelite group. They are prejudiced in the foundation, making claims of people based on their skin color. The soul is the dividing line, not the color of our skin. Even a child knows this, but many attached themselves to deception. Amen. So in Genesis, it says, PHRU URBU (be fruitful & multiply). (I am telling you, because you commented once that you try to read all comments.) Amen. So in the ancient days, Leah/LAaH and Rachel/RHhL increased their home (built up their home) by another's womb. That is what modern-day adoption is. Do not reject your own seed, while believing that taking another's child is somehow better/. The Creator said through the Word: PHRU URBU, but man-made society made it socially pleasing that we are better people if we do adoption. We can help the foster child without bringing that child in our home. We can make items and give to orphanages (now called something else, can't remember, but of the Foster Care system.) We can also spend time at orphanages. There is so much we can do. But do not reject ZRGhK (your seed). In all matters, know Yah is with us and He is a Righteous Judge. His Son is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life ( that is for anyone not yet saved, reading this). He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6). He is the Atoning offering for mankind for the remission of sin (1 John 2:1-2).
wrong deadening material and it is too thin. Sticky foil with some foam treated like substance. It helps on stuff that rattles. It is just a gimmick. Do not undercoat your vehicle with any tar or rubberized solution. It causes deterioration of metal and rust within 5 to 7 years. Mechanics hate working underneath a car that is rubberized also with rustproofing fluids that drip. Ziebart is one of the worst places to go for undercoating and paint protection. Go to Krown, Corrosion Free, or Rust Check as they protect your car and need to be reapplied every 2 years as road debris and surface friction create unprotected spots. Noise deading requires real soundproofing material often about one and a half inches to 2 inches thick padding, not a half-inch. Go to a Recording Studio, and you'll find out or isolation booth for audiology/ hearing tests.
HuuuuuH ??? lol Boy if I only had a fraction of the car knowledge you have I would be able to buy myself a car with confidence but I'm overwhelmed because I feel I'm going to get ripped off.
Avoid dealerships and do a lot of research on what you are going to look at, what it's valued at and what comparable ones are listed for. That's most of the work. The internet and UA-cam reviews are incredibly valuable today. Hope that helps 😁
Love seeing Corbin help out and soaking in all the cool stuff you’re teaching him.
I do know of Derek from Vice Grip Garage. I'll take that as a compliment! 😁
You never give up. You always find another solution. Your son is a great helper.
Exactly this!!
Kinda right.. CLD tiles reduce vibration and do little for blocking and deadening sound. And any more than 25-35% coverage of CLD is a waste of money.
I guess you mentioned this 3 layers for the floor. What would you recommend for the wheel arches and firewall.
Anyone done this to tell about the results? I have heard about using multiple layers of different materials
No need for the cld. For his goals, just the mlv, decoupled, would prolly be enough, but he needs to focus on complete coverage
Seeing your son work with you brings back memories of me "helping" my gad in his garage over 60 years ago. Thanks for the memories!
That little fella really stuck with you. You should be proud of him! I'm sure you are.
I watch all your videos. I think you and your wife are amazing. Most of all I love that you’re boys always want to help and you allow them to. A lot of dad’s don’t want to be bothered while doing a project. Once again amazing father you are!

You have such a wonderful helper! So proud of the father you are!!!
Just keep in mind that most road noise comes from 1) engine/engine bay and 2) tires/wheel arches. So if you are doing this type of project again focus on those two areas.
And use the proper proper product. Cld is not supposed to stop sound, it's supposed to stop resonance. Mlv is the proper material to use.
I actually read somewhere that most of the noise on our trucks comes through the roof surprisingly enough. The headliner would be awful to remove but it might be worth it. Came to say this...on a big SUV like an Excursion, that's a whole lot metal to be vibrating.

Love seeing your son helping you. Great times.
You have a hard little helper there.
He’s such a good helper
3 dB is respectable, it's a factor of 2x. It's twice as quiet as it was. Your truck is a whisper compared to my 6.9 IDI.

Well, it's probably doing its job very well, it's just that blocking noise isn't it's job. For that, you'd want to use decoupled mlv
Really like how you often have your son out there when working on the trucks.
What valuable life lessons you are teaching your boys. It's great that they are learning to repair things with you.
Yessss. This is so timely as we have an excursion pulling our camper as well and I’m looking into reducing the noise
Enjoying the journey silencing the truck! Amazing what products are out there, learned something.
watched the whole thing, buddy! lot of work. thanks for this. fixing to do my 96 cclb.gotta find another 40/20/40 seat in good condition cause I think yours is just badass! never even thought of that! stay down and enjoy your OBS!!

I love the sound of a diesel!!! Always wanted an excursion but had to settle for a gas expedition :(
The best thing you can do is go with a quiet muffler and tires like nitto ridge grapplers. Finally if you are really motivated, insulate the firewall abs under the hood, and under the headliner.

The 1/3 rule is bs, and he honestly doesn't need cld anyway for his goals, just decoupled mlv
I did this, it helped. I am now dropping my dash to do the fire wall
Use decoupled mlv instead of cld, you'll get better results
Using A weighting for road noise, road noise frequencies are in 800 to 1200Hz. Killmat would stop some vibration, but not very effective at blocking low frequencies under 500Hz, which are generated by your diesel engine.
Correct. Decoupled mlv is the correct product for his goals, not cld.
Nothing like doing a project with dad!

I ended up replacing all 4 calipers after one seized up on me. ford calipers of those years are notorious for sticking. Anyways, keep up the awesome vids!
It being a notoriously loud 6.0 Powerstroke doesn’t help either, although doing the roof would’ve likely help a lot too.
Honestly looks like a lot of work for very little difference. Thanks for sharing.
Think I'm going to try Siles liner pro it's 200mil thick for about $20 more a box.
Don't use cld for sound deadening.... use mlv, decoupled with something like ccf

Sounds that get inside the car will reflect from this hard material, and interior clothing will absorb some frequencies.
For what he wants, he needed to do decoupled mlv
Sound is actually coming out of the hood and firewall, motorwise. My OBS has deadening inside the firewall and hood... huge difference
In my experience, sound deadening from Amazon Basics + a new carpet with kill mat dropped mine from 77 max db to 56 max db. I also did the firewall which is 90% of the sound. If you don't do the firewall, it's a huge waste of money unless you're chillin in the back.
What products did you use on the firewal?
Decoupled mlv is the proper product, but decent carpet over cld is better than nothing for sure.
I was hoping for more, too! You Rock!
I love your little helper.
Great lil helper ya got there
Is there anything your not afraid to tackle? Amazing!
Decluttering 🤣
Rusty Judgment Ha!
I think you should do videos on buying vehicles as well. You seem to be good at it.
Same exact problem. 6.0 2004 f250 + truck camper. Dynamat weighs quite a bit more. Kilmat and dynamat are butyl rubber.
Decoupled mlv is the correct product to use
a)2 layers @ wheel arches 100% coverage and b)hood and roof 30-40% coverage
Do you mean 2 layers of Same material (aluminium butyl sheets) on the wheel arches.
@@ahervijay97 yes (especially if those are off brand)
No. Don't just keep adding the wrong material. Use decoupled mlv. Cld is not a sound blocker, it's job is only to reduce panel resonance, not stop the sound passing through it.
Not gonna lie. You also only used a thick Butyl. You should've used a Butyl and acoustic foam sound deadening to make it a lot quieter.
Closed cell foam as the decoupling layer for mlv, which is the product that actually does the work
the problem is you need to do the firewall on the engine side, and then the rear corner on the exhaust side needs covered so it doesn't let sound through in that wheelwell area... also the roof will change a lot because its only got a headliner whereas the floor already had carpeting stuff.
And he needs to use decoupled mlv, not cld
I love watching your son work with you! He will remember these times forever. You are a great Dad.
I have diamond eye 5 inch on my 97 7.3 single cab with the resonator got rid of all the drone I didn't have the resonator at first huge difference
Great job guys!!
This is 100% correct. Use cld to stop a panel from making noise, use decoupled mlv to stop a panel PASSING noise, which is whatbhe actually needs.
You only need 25% coverage of the cdl material. Mass loaded vinyl over top the cdl will really quiet it down
The 25% rule is bs and it's actually more complex than that. But you are right that decoupled mlv is the correct product for his goals, not cld
Put it in the doors on the outside panel, it's gonna help
Could you please make a video on how you buy used cars? Such as sites you recommend, what to look for, tips for negotiating, etc.
you seem so disappointed by the results you obtained. you may no know that decibels are measured on an exponential scale in the base of 10, A 3 DB drop is half of the original noise. I think that is quite satisfactory.
Well it’s well insulated
BTW. Perceived loudness correlates mostly to dBc (not dBa). Thus the change in meter readings may not correlate to what you actually perceive.
Ceramic tint the windows, even the windshield! I promise it will cut a lot more sound! Your challenge is that loud diesel engine...hopefully the overall sounds "feel" nicer to you, despite your loud engine overpowering your decibel reader
What's the result after the new exhaust?
I knew you had kids too. Yes indeed the noise is insane.
So, did the exhaust help? :)
glad I watched this... Before I spent $500 and ripped my interiors out... lol
I guess I am wondering why you don't put a muffler back on?
I am. 😁
Wow that's a lot of work, just a ?, why not replace the catalytic converter instead, would that make it quieter.
replace the car itself better
I’m ready for a new video!
I think this material just made for a car audio means to get a good and quality sound of sound in music...
Kind of, it's made to stop panel resonance, which energy from a sound system can be a cause of said resonance, so yeah, not made to stop noise, that's what decoupled mlv is for
ok ok thanks sir i get it!!!
Hood insulation, also insulation inner fender insulation.
Had a little chuckle. On the dashboard was an amber light. Something else going on with the Excursion?
Did the exhaust make a difference?
Any update on the sound if you got the resonator put in?
So, did you install the resonator?
Missing your videos Tom! I know you and Dawn have been busy getting projects done but I have missed seeing things from your point of view. :)
Why didn't put any sound deadening inside doors?and on the floors you can add some carpet underlayment this will help will soundproofing. Kilmat is just removing resonance from metal but on excursion metal is thick and don't really have a lot of resonance
Exactly, decoupled mlv is the correct product to use to block noise coming through.
Dont use cld for sound deadening, use mlv, decoupled with something like ccf.
Wait, what about the old truck??? Leaving me hanging here.
You didn't do the rear wheel wells
Radiator leaks... Four lights flashing on the dash... Brakes are fried... Today we are going to take care of the one that bothers me the most... let's make it quieter.
Wouldn't it be easier to put a muffler on it?
Seems to me the majority of the excessive noise was coming from the engine, so that's probably the area that needs working on, bulkhead, under bonnet etc.
What was the amber light for , thought empty petrol but wasn't sure
Hey Tom, how about an update? Soon ? lol 😊
Tom are you taking time off from your UA-cam channel?
do the under side of the hood youll see big difference
You should have placed some inside the door
Thats s lot of kilmat... yet its like the biggest vehicle possible lol....😆
You really needed to add the other mat on top with the loaded mat.
Yes, decoupled mlv is what actually reduces outside sound passing through

Why nothing inside doors?
that noise is one of the downsides of the 7.3 compared to the triton
Hey you okay missing your channel
Kilmat your hood also if you can
You were supposed to do the outside skin of the doors not so much the inside .

Noise deading requires real soundproofing material often about one and a half inches to 2 inches thick padding, not a half-inch. Go to a Recording Studio, and you'll find out or isolation booth for audiology/ hearing tests.
Correct. Use decoupled mlv, not cld.
That things is not for sound deadening. Use MLV instead
Correct, specifically decoupled mlv
HuuuuuH ??? lol
Boy if I only had a fraction of the car knowledge you have I would be able to buy myself a car with confidence but I'm overwhelmed because I feel I'm going to get ripped off.
Avoid dealerships and do a lot of research on what you are going to look at, what it's valued at and what comparable ones are listed for. That's most of the work. The internet and UA-cam reviews are incredibly valuable today. Hope that helps 😁
@@RustyJudgment awww thanks Tom 😊
