I think she was trying to keep the cabinet ministers happy, you know the ones that were happy to give up our sterling when she wasn't. I think she had to make some compromises that she wasn't particularly happy with. She also knew that those industries required massive investment while she was trying to keep us on an even keel financially. We can't blame her for the previous governments that hadn't invested in our infrastructure. The same is happening again, our local Liberal Democrat/Labour council are planning to sell off council properties that require major refurbishment to meet government standards. @@paulcourt6817

At the time, Farmer's Weekly reported that about 850 were given interviews and around 350 people were offered jobs. I visit a few local farms, none of them have any migrant workers. @peterholden3672

@ancietman Leaving the EU has meant the UK government had to acquire new trade deals. One was with Australia and its produce. However, Australian farming is on a lot bigger scale and the standards are lower than what we had with the EU. Our farms can't compete with their lower standards and the benefits of the economy of scale.
Then there were other environmental standards dropped resulting in more sewage been dumped in our waterways. Also, off the top of my head, they got rid of the red tape that capped bankers' bonuses. Again that was there to help stop another 2008 happening. They only get rid of red tape that stops them from making money.

We've been importing food since at least WWII, where do they think oranges and bananas came from, nothing to do with Brexit. The issue is that the larger the population grew, the more foods were being imported. Plus we stopped eating seasonally, and the stores were providing imported foods all year round. Farmers told the media that they're feeding 100M population in the UK.

During WW2 the UK was more resourceful. Most people who had a garden were encouraged to "Grow their own. Make do and mend and Waste not want not." Oranges and bananas were so rare to obtain that there was a song called, "Yes, we have no bananas". Now in 2024 we have younger generations who have concreted over their gardens to park their cars and don't have a clue how to "Grow their own" let alone finding the time to maintain a garden. During WW2 scraps were collected to feed livestock and "Pig bins" were put in place for people to put their scrap vegetables to be collected. People were able to keep livestock in their gardens such as chickens, pigs and rabbits even in cities. Now it's extremely rare to find anyone who keeps livestock in their gardens. Rabbits are kept more as pets rather than food. Local councils still collect scraps but I'm not 100% sure what they do with it. People used to have a compost heap in their gardens to use as fertiliser for their gardens. Now most people buy it from garden centres and supermarkets. A lot has changed since WW2 including the increase in population and diversity.Having such a diverse population has increased the reliance on imports as the more diverse prefer foods that can't be grown in the UK.

I began growing some food in 2016, for health reasons and the neighbours complained during the lockdown and the landlord stopped it. I lived in London in the 50s, and 60s the houses where we lived didn't have any gardens, and there wasn't anyone with chickens etc. However, the London markets did have loads of fruit in the 60s, in the 50s, oranges and bananas were rationed. My parents gave me their rations of fruit because I was a baby. @@samanthahardy9903
