  • Cycling injuries can be extremely frustrating - especially when they aren't even that cycling related. I've talked about being off of the bicycle before with these lower back pains - it is definitely no fun. Thanks god this time it wasn't too bad and hopefully I won't be off the bike too long.

Hello Tim. Just subscribed to you on the 7th of April. Like what I've seen so far. From Yakima Wa. On the back thing, feel for you. I am 68, been keeping up with my health from early twenties when I did something and was a regular at the chiro. Since then I have made sure to keep the core fairly solid, not always but stayed with it over time. Been biking since six yrs of age. Recently reaffirmed my dedication to biking and all of the other activities. Have my own in home gym set up so no excuses for me. One of my morning routines is some Ti Chi with fluid motion, nothing fast or too far out of norm just to wake up. I then go into the gym and merely hang, like I was doing a pull up, but don't. I started out with just about ten seconds, now up to a minute. It does many things to elongate the back and everything else. I have an inversion table but rarely use it, when needed if I feel it will do any good. I also strength train five days a week. Just thought I'd throw this out there. Nothing worse then being out of commission.
The bike packing is new for me, will be gearing up this year to get going on this new adventure. Will be dialing in on many channels out there to decipher what will work for me. So much great information out there.
Hope you pulled out from this, being about three weeks later.

I have gotten a lot of advice but I believe the strength training is key. I am better and have been doing more consistent work every evening. Even training myself on the "Asian Squat".
Good luck on your bike-packing adventures! My friends and I only want to travel/vacation by bike now!!

About 30 years ago I had a similar back problem with it "going out" from innocent moves like leaning over a table or picking up a camera bag. Tried a procedure, Chinese cupping, where the practitioner literally poked two holes in my lower back area and drew out a lot of gunk using a suction machine. I was skeptical but haven't had a single reoccurrence of the problem since. Obviously, other people's mileage may differ.

Holy cow! This happened to me this weekend too! It was so bad I went to the ER because we thought it might be a kidney stone. It was just a back spasm, but one of the worste pains I've ever had. They gave me muscle relaxers, which worked great. I used a heating pad and Advil. I feel better now, but at the time I thought I was going to be crippled the rest of my life.

Hi Tim, I will tell you about my experience with back pains, take it for what it's worth. I had recurring lower back pains and couldn't get rid of them, a mechanic from the local bike shop advised me to use flat bars and to rise the stem by 5 cm. I did that as a last resort and to my great surprise it worked. in fact I'm leaving shortly to a round trip to the North Cape (8,000 km).

When my lower back goes it seems that it is not always the thing you are doing when it goes into the bad place. Seems to be built up strain. It is 1-2 weeks recovery for me too. One thing that helps me is trying to actively engage stomach muscles when transitioning from bent to straight body positions. Cycling and kayaking tend to help my back overall, I think. Sitting too much can be bad.

Soon you too will be an old guy on a comfort bike. I happened to me, and it could happen to anyone! E-bikes may be in my distant future, but for me now they are still cheating. How you sit on your bike and how your back is supported can address a specific vertebra in your back to give greater comfort and ease while riding. I expect some recumbent riders to chime in with their back improvement stories. Study, Adjust your bike accordingly and keep on riding.

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  6 місяців тому

Studies show most e-bike riders aren't riding e-bikes instead of regular bikes but instead of walking or driving. So they are only cheating on cars which is an awesome thing. ITs time to drop that language. I will ride when when I can't do what I want on my bike anymore.

I know you've heard this before, kudos on Chiro, PT work, core works etc. Its just repetitive strain. They all pounce on you as a rescue. I am 61 , and have transcended all that. Slow it down. Yep, the time when my sciatica was spazzing so hard (2005) I couldn't SIT DOWN. Imagine the embarrassment of that. I had a hot chick in the house . Ice therapy, combined with heat later on, is amazing. Can I gently, humbly contribute? ADVIL WILL KILL YOU!!! All the NSAIDS, (especially combined with intermittent, innocent beer intake throughout the day), will destroy/shred your KIDNEYS. All of a sudden. Feel the punch. Been there too. Please research that. For starters, read the fucking label, it's right there on the bottle! Arnica is probably better, so is Turmeric root tincture. Hydrate . No, not tap water. You are probably also stretching your core waay too hard (post new year's freakout) . So buy some hiking boots and grok upon some gentler movement . Oh but the pressure is on to get that shoot done... (vicious cycle syndrome, we call it)

Best wishes! After your back heals a bit, check out these two books: Athletic Body in Balance by Gray Cook (about restoring lost strength or flexibility, with a testing methodology) and Convict Conditioning by Paul Wade (an easy to follow set of body weight exercise progressions). Also a good yoga class is what helped me in a similar situation as yours, led by a physical-therapy-minded instructor.

I am currently going through PT from a chronic lower back issue ive dealt with for the last 10 years. This PT properly diagnosed me with a misaligned SI Joint that can cause a lot of pain in the lower back and even push on the sciatic nerve causing major pain. I recommend PT instead of chiropractic work. Much better in fixing the pain instead of managing it with monthly realignments

    • @TimFitzwater

I have thought about that. I did some work for a PT and thought about reaching out to trade.

My wife has her doctorate in PT, runs a specialized private practice, and gets a lot of clients from chiropractors. She says they're a great referral source for where to find injured people who aren't recovering. Typically people think that strength exercises are needed when there is an issue like a "thrown out xyz", but it's often due to over work and muscle spasm from already being at a 10/10 and being asked for more. More often than not people need to stretch and relax a part of their body rather than strengthen it. The weakness is likely in a smaller supporting muscle group that require a more minute and pinpointed exercise as opposed to a sit up. She's a huge fan of planks...with the more important stretches. Hope you feel better, heat/ice is good.

I work at a standing desk and would doubt I excessively lack vitamin D as someone who spends so much time outside. I think what most people are missing is that I have basically pinched or slipped something.

Hey Tim, I’m sorry to learn you’re dealing with back pain. I’ve had pretty serious lower back pain at two separate times in the last few years, but I learned a few mobility tricks that really made all the difference.
First, I learned how to get into a full Asian squat, which is just bending your knees and hips and squatting down and hugging your knees, but being able to do this does a surprising amount to relieve back tension. It can be hard the first few times if you’re not used to it, if you’re still in pain it’s sometimes more accessible by laying on your back and hug your knees. I still get flair ups from time to time, but I can pop into one of these squats for a few minutes and it eases it off.
Learning to brace your core differently can also ease back pain; I practice by doing “dead bugs” and various single side carries to gently engage stability muscles.
Hope these tips bring some comfort & resilience!

@@TimFitzwater also: if your back pain is anything like what I used to encounter, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that you “did” anything to make it flair up. If I sat still for any prolonged period, it could show up, first as a slight cramp, and then gripping pain. Working on hip mobility and core strength made all the difference.
