I purchased this - 940 Tactical - just about a week ago and right now it's on its way back to Mossberg. Finicky is exactly the right word. I shot a variety of about 50 shells, including Federal, and the malfunction rate was about 1 in 5. I brought it back to the dealer, he took it back to the range, I loaded up 6 rounds and handed it over to him. He snapped off 5 just like that and handed it back to me - perfect he says. Um - lookee here, the 6th cartridge jammed on its way out of the magazine, didn't even make it onto the elevator. So, it's now on its way back to Mossberg. Hopefully it's a simple mechanical adjustment. I will say it has NEVER failed to eject the spent shell so the recoil ejection mechanism seems solid. Something wrong with elevating and chambering the new shell. that's where it was always going wrong. That's the simplest part of it, but who knows. So yeah, finicky. But I hope to get it back in much more reliable shape.
@@itsspenchy617 I got it back from Mossberg months ago. The action was greatly improved. The ejector button works properly and the elevator no longer scrapes the interior wall of the receiver. That being said, I still have sporadic trouble with cheaper Turkish rounds, but with Winchester cartridges it has been 100% reliable. So yes, the quality of the ammo is important. I had seen reviews stating that the action would cycle "anything" reliably, but I guess that has its limits. Feed it good quality ammo and you won't be disappointed. (That being said, I do think that if an intruder was in my house I'd be more inclined to grab my pump action than the semi-auto. It's great for sport, but in a critical situation I'd be more comfortable with a simpler, therefore more reliable, action.)

As you described things flew everywhere downrange called cease fire, I thought I retrieved everything but realized the follower was missing after I tried to fire it and the spring came back and got a tangled in the bottom. just a big mess. I later found this is the wrong way to strip it but I was at the range and wanted those shells out. So Im about to order missing parts and get it atleast to where it was to send back.

Man! Just picked mine up, last wk! I really thought I'd done my homework, but I'm only just now seein all tha negative stuff, after researchin tube capacity issues. Mine'd only hold 6 intha tube, so I removed tha tube (Followin Jerry's vid, evry step'a tha way!), inspected, and replaced, but could only get 4 in, afterward! Further research clued me in to the potential length differences betwixt roll-crimped, and star/fold-crimped shotshells. Azit turned out, I was using 2 3/4" Rio buckshot, and they were approx 1/4" longer'n my star-crimped specimens. Took extension apart again, and re-assembled, payin VERY close attention, to how I fed tha spring into tha tube. After that, and usin TRUE 2 3/4" shells, I was able to get all 7 in, but that last shell seemed 2b right at tha limit. It appears my initial "crisis" has been averted, but now, I'm afraid to shootit, after seein all the other issues ppl've had, and hearin some horror stories about Mossberg customer service. Based upon "feel" alone, it seems like an upgraded mag spring wun't be tha worst thing u could do to 1...
first off you would cleaned and oiled the gun befor shooting it , so the mag thing would have being fixed doing that , the front sight is warranty so you dont have to fix it , stripping the gun is not that bad , once you do it , its easy . as for how long it runs befor cleaning , i clean mine every 400 rounds and its still running sweet . i think its just you moaning , its a poor vid any way . and as any of your recommendation's i dont think any one cares as why are you wearing latex gloves , how odd .
CLEARLY you are NOT a true gun guy. Go ahead and buy ANY other gas operated gun and try cleaning it. I see that as your biggest problem here. You JUST CAN'T HANDDLE IT!!
Budget minded buyers and blind nationalism will never allow people to admit that American manufacturing and companies produce low quality guns nowadays. Buy European and never look back. The 1301 is just a tad bit more expensive and you're getting a much better gun.
@@n.s.raleigh4162 I've seen the 1301 going for $1300 these last couple of months due to sales. But yes I'd even consider a $600 difference a tad bit more in the grand scheme of things. Those few extra months of saving would be worth it to end up with a more proven and reliable system.

@@BLOWNChevySShave a few buddies with RIA 1911. They say they are severely under rated. I currently don't have any 1911s but have a RIA pump action. No complaints
You think this gun is difficult to tear down and re-assemble? Wow.
Man, I have owned a very many shotguns of all kinds for over 50 years and can have any one I want for my every need. I have kind of a pecking order rules where a better gun takes the place of a lesser gun and it gets traded. I have the Pro waterfowl version and it has claimed a forever keeper rating. Sorry you had trouble. Its not perfect, but I give it an 8/10.
If you give an 8/10 this where are you putting a beretta 1301 or a benelli m4? Also for waterfowl what would you give to a browning a5? Nothing will ever be a 10 as there is always room for improvement.
@@randyreviewsit Agree on room for improvement. In Sa's I have a Benelli, Beretta, Stoeger , with some aftermarket parts ahead of the Mossberg. A regular A5 not so good for waterfowl, The wicked wing or similar OK. I don't own any more A5's but do have a BPS and hunt almost exclusively with Browning rifles. We have legendary waterfowl/Black bear hunting and I get to see all sorts of shotties in the rough. I'm really a pump guy but love em all.
I'm still buying one, and 2 of the tactical models lol
Buy the beretta
@@randyreviewsit Beretta is too small for me, plus it costs a lot more and isn't sold anywhere near me. The Mossberg is easy to work on for me. I've handled them before. Taken them apart and put them back together. Never had any issues
You were complaining about the disassembly of the 940 and you’re recommending the beretta ?
What's up with the gloves
Don’t want chemicals on my hands I used to film right after cleaning things, toxic chemicals and having a kid around is no bueno
Any idea why mine double feeds.
No idea man, but I got rid of this a while back
Thanks for your honest opinion. Too many people wont admit they made a mistake on $1000 purchase. I opted for the Beretta A300 patrol.
First of all… fuck that tube… put the tube on first and then put the spring in… other than that, great shotgun.
This is an example of, "You need to learn your weapon."
Nothing but cycling issues from my brand new 940 tactical sent it to mossberg and they are trying to charge me to fix it….should have bought the beretta but I wanted to buy American and now I’m regretting my decision
Yeah I want to grab a 1301 and do a can on it. Sorry you had worse luck than me.
Traded mine in on a Benelli M2. Also bought a Beretta A300 Ultima. Both are great guns, though I prefer the way the Ultima shoots and handles. I still have nightmares thinking about the JM940. Any time people make excuses for something saying, "well it works fine if you do such and such," It's time to unload it.
I strongly disagree, I have won numerous matches with this shotgun with zero issues, this thing runs any type of ammo without any problems.
Thanks for you honest review
What the hell are you talking about it's advertised to run 1500 rounds before cleaning
And my hexclad pans were advertised as non-stick but here we are my pans are in the trash because everything stuck to them and I sold this shotgun.
@randyreviewsit I have the same shot gun and it eats everything from lightest trap loads to 3inch magnums slug buck shot and bird shot it works flawlessly never any problems best shot gun ever for the money hands down!!!!!!!
Good luck, hope it works out for you
first off you would cleaned and oiled the gun befor shooting it , so the mag thing would have being fixed doing that , the front sight is warranty so you dont have to fix it , stripping the gun is not that bad , once you do it , its easy . as for how long it runs befor cleaning , i clean mine every 400 rounds and its still running sweet . i think its just you moaning , its a poor vid any way . and as any of your recommendation's i dont think any one cares as why are you wearing latex gloves , how odd .
$600 is a tad?
@@n.s.raleigh4162 I've seen the 1301 going for $1300 these last couple of months due to sales. But yes I'd even consider a $600 difference a tad bit more in the grand scheme of things. Even someone with a low paying job can just save up three to four more months and end up with a superior quality product. Those few extra months of saving would be worth it to end up with a more proven and reliable system.
Would do the opposite of what you recommend. Crying over cleaning and disassembling issues is personal, and you sound like a beginner.
Cool, let’s see how long it runs without you cleaning it
I can easily see how all the bells and whistles of the 940 might over confuse a novice shotgunner. A precision machine always needs precision assembly.
My alchemy custom 1911 goes back together with ease…
@@randyreviewsitI'm happy for your success but a bit surprised you are having trouble figuring out the proper tension on the tube parts to free the spring.
940 sucks. Benelli m4 with tube extension all the way 🤙
Lol the 1301 Beretta. Beretta owns Benelli btw
Lol this guy
🥴
jm pro is no different than the 930
Don’t quote me on it but I believe they added that spacer that a lot of people were buying for the 930 for humid conditions where the gun had cycling issues.
@@randyreviewsit they drilled holes in the spacer, the 930 is a good gun, it just needs a dumb amount of maintence
@@iclutchrooftops5524 yeah that’s what it was like drain hole things. My 940 didn’t feel very well made unfortunately but as far as starter guns for shotgun competition I heard it is miles ahead of the stoeger
I own a plain standard Mossberg 930 with a 26" barrel, and so far it has worked perfectly... it is to me a very comfortable shotgun to shoot... I clean it quite often though... regards to all, Eduardo Avello.
You need to know how to disassemble, oil, and reassemble any firearm before you shoot it!
I watched the video twice on it and read the manual 3-4 times… Lena and Jerry made a video because there is a ton of bs with assembling this gun.
who is this guy because knows nothing about this shotgun or probably any other, AND what's with the gloves!?!
I own a 940 great gun . Your just not man enough for a 940 stick to a $150 turkish pos 4 u little man 😢😢
Nah I would rather buy the beretta and not have issues.
