    There's three main types of defences in PoE. Absorption, Mitigation, and Negation.
    Absorption will create a pool for the entire hit to be taken from. Examples of this are Life, ES, Aegis, MoM.
    Mitigation will reduce the amount of damage taken. Examples of this are Resistance, Reduced x damage taken, less x damage taken. Armour.
    Negation completely stops the damage from applying. Examples of this are immunity, Evasion, Dodge, Block, Avoid.

    The part around 1:46:46 made me laugh where nugi says the Split between mana, life and es isnt used anymore - and here we are in 3.24, where archmage uses glorious vanity with double leech implicit & points in the tree.

    Ziz thanks for these PoE univeristy series. Have you considered reaching out to other streamers or players that are outside the realm of those you typically interact with (steel, havoc, nugi, raiz, tyty) to try and hit on different subjects? For example, maybe coordinate with players/streamers who: 1) focus on delving, 2) focus on making lots of currency, 3) hideout warriors that only craft, 4) players who focus on making mirror items for service. I think it would be refreshing to see new streamers/players on these series to touch on different subjects that your audience could learn from. BTW love your content and not looking to hate, just trying to offer some tips for diversifying a little.

      I think that the issue is for 2-4 they do not want to teach people their tricks. I think it is pretty obvious even why.

      Delvers make plenty of guides themselves all ready and the reality is most players don't even need to hit depth 250-300.
      People who make a lot of currency either play group or just straight up invest most of their money into projects that will def pay off, like buying 50 contracts and running them, just brute force and raw time investment.
      The other 2 categories are such a small minority, what would there even be there to talk about other than, ''I got my meta-craft mods, I have 500 exalts to spend on this project, I beast split this like 20 times.'' People that usually make loads of raw currency are also the people who are part of the last 2 categories.

      I mean the currency is already covered in last league's university, the other three are only relevant for a small minority of the playerbase, so not too much value in him making those.

    Thanks, I didn't knew about entropy on evasion, neither the formula of damage mitigation. Based on the rule of thumb is: total mitigation = damage / (damage + 10% of armour), capped at 10% of armour. And life leech, holy... got easier after I understood that leech is a buff that stores a value (like plague bearer) and burns it, with a maximum sum of simultaneous 'buffs'.

    After i've finished 100million dps Berserk cyclone build on standart. I understood one thing: If enemy dies before he can hit you, you achived ultimate defence!

      That's generally the best defense. How do you think those no defense very deep delver do delve? They invest legit 0 in defense and kill everything first while not getting hit.

    18:25 Blind roll is separate from Evasion and if they miss due to blind, the hit calculation never even proceeds to the Evasion step (so the current entropy remains unchanged). Same thing is true for Dodge (which is 'random'' (actually pRNG to be precise) and not entropy based, btw).

      If you pop a granite flask there shouldn’t be a single white mob that can kill you in ‘1-shot’. Only if you just stand there ungeared in a juiced map and do nothing.
      Far more than likely, you died to an effect like ‘bodies explode.’

    17:46 Evasion only protects against attacks tho. So physical spells are dangerous if you are evasion based.

    15:30 The elephant in the room that goes unmentioned here is that evasion only works on attack hits, it does nothing against spells, and there are some spells, like Ethereal Knives that do physical damage, and evasion characters need to be *very* wary of things like that because you get can get nuked very fast by stuff like that.

      I've played 2 minions (redemptions and animate weapon) and vortex occultist of him, this last one is one of my all time favourites, very solid builds. Well, RS was a bit of a overkill, was funny to one shot sirus. Never again, but still.

      This is a horrible idea. These are designed to teach new players about poe not how to build certain builds. Ghazzy has his own guides for that. A better argument would be do an episode with ghazzy where he teaches crafting and using the crafting website

    17:30 Isn't there a chance that if let's say 10 porcupines explode near you, most of them gets a high starting entropy and then you take a bunch of hits? Or is entropy shared between enemies?

      Entropy is tracked from your character, not from the enemies.

    nugi mentions it briefly however quartz flask is a very mooted defensive mechanic. Especially for summoners, vortex, ED contagion, brand and totem builds.

    I really didn't appreciate mobility against things that weren't big bosses until this season. I've been trying to stay more mobile during all content, and I die far less. Considering I'm melee, will probably be even more effective when I roll ranged.

    I have a build which stretches leech to obtain 4200/4300 of the characters total health pool by combining the trickster and slayer ascendancy nodes on the scion, using Haemophilia gloves to apply a dot, which also causes them to explode
    This cancels out slayers latent reduction to life gained, and using vaal pact i simply cannot die if i hit something
    its very satisfying to push these mechanics to their absolute limits

    If you combine this keystone with the Aegis Aurora shield and having max block chance along with having either Riposte or Reckoning trigger skills supported with Life on hit/Life Leech support, you will actually regain Life/Energy Shield instead of losing it.

    nice Vid! Especially the part on how evasion actually works and can be made really reliable helped me a lot. One question pops up tho: How does flat chance to evade interact with this? Like the one you find on grace watchers eyes or redeemer gloves...

      The difference is that it’s dodge and not evasion which can be confusing.
      Dodge is a flat random chance to completely dodge, there isn’t a decay system for it, so for example if you have 40% chance to dodge then you should dodge and completely ignore the damage of 40/100 hits.

      @@Drack093 I am not talking about dodge tho, but evasion. For example, soul of garukhan (pantheon) says "+5% chance to evade attack hits, if you have taken a savage hit recently". i would assume, this means something different then just dodge, since the pantheon offers dodge chance in different places and also ggg is usually very precise about different wording meaning different things.
      i got the difference between actual randomness (dodge/block) and entropy (evasion) and this is exactly why i couldnt figure out flat evasion chance. as nugi stated, an entropy based system cant actually state chances of avoidance without knowledge of accuricy numbers. does it maybe lower the accuricy of incoming hits? or is it a second evasion roll, that is actually rng based (which would kinda be the worst scenario, bc it would render flat evasion chance mostly useless)? or did i misunderstand your response?

    It should be noted that slayers Brutal Fervor for 3.13, now states: 100% Increased Maximum Recovery is equal to Life Leech, meaning, 1 percent of life leech nets you 100% Maximum Recovery and having 2 percent leech would get you 200%, and so on and so forth. As mentioned in the video, generating multiple instance of leech is important, especially when many mechanics in the game require you to dodge out of the way, and thus, if you decide to use leech in your build, any duration based skill would be your best choice. In the case of slayer, Bladestorm is able to generate 3 instances of leech, and allows you to be mobile while leeching and dealing damage. If you were to build around this, at any given time against an immobile boss such as Kitava, you can simply drop 3 bladestorms, you could spec your tree into all the leech nodes which gives you a total of 6% leech, and adding the life leech gem would grant you 8%, and would get you a total of 24% life leech while your blade storms are active. This percent increases to 32% if you decide to attack as well in conjunction with your blade storms. Now your maximum recovery is 3,200% from Leech.
    Also, Recovery refers most often to life, mana or energy shield recovery. All gaining of life, mana and Energy shield is recovery. Generic sources of recovery can be found for example in flasks but is not unique to it. There are multiple types of recovery, for example:[3]
    Energy shield Recharge Rate
    Regeneration provides passive recovery over time.
    Leech grants recovery based on damage dealt with the specified type of damage.
    Certain Flasks grants recovery when consumed.
    All "Gain on hit" and "Gain on kill" effects
    Miscellaneous sources, such as unique items passive skills

    One question about elemental resistances: Do you need to have capped resists 'resting' (just from pasives and gear) or can you rely on flasks for that?

    This is such an awesome series, definitely helped me out with some stuff i had previously overlooked. With leech, which stat is it that i should be looking for if i want my leech to be more "instant" than a trickle effect? and is there somewhere the recovery rate from leech is shown either in game or in PoB? also with the complexities of leech i almost feel like it could be a video on its own haha.

    One thing I'm not sure Nugi explained properly is that evasion doesn't work for ALL hits. It only works for attack hits, not spells. Armour however does work for both attack and spell hits, mitigating the physical damage part.

      he said that elemental hits can be evaded, but spells cannot an example would be elemental hit spellgem which does random elemental damage but its still an attack skill while there is fireball that does elemental damage but its not being performed by a weapon and instead its being casted by a character it self aka wont have "attack" tag on a skillgem

    what about elementalist reflect immunity? do map sextants modify that so you only get 90% resistance on elementalist?

    So how does armor + endurance charge + fortıfy works:
    For example, lets say you are hit by 100 dmg, you have 1000 armor, 5 endurance charge and fortify so do they apply together? I guess fortify is calculated seperately since it is reduce all damage not just physical.
    So i guess from armor you get 50% prevent, 5 EC means 5 x 4 = 20% physical reduced, 50% + 20% = 70% so you would take 30 damage but fortify prevent 20% of that and you take 24 damage.
    Is this how it is calculated?

    Accuracy doesn't scale linearily so blind doesn't cut accuracy in half. It actually halfs hit chance (which is better since accuracy gets worse the more you have of it -> you can see this with 1500 accuracy and 3000 accuracy in pob for example. 1500 accuracy isn't 50% hit chance).

    I am curious , if I get hit by a elemental based attack skill, eg. ice shot, tectonic slam, static strike, does armour do anything as a defensive layer ? Does it mitigate the physical damage first before converting to elemental damage ?

    amazing video, as always!!! The only thing that's not quite clear to me, is armour, and physical damage reduction. For what I undestood in the video, armour doesn't actually increase our physical damage reduction, if so, two characters with no addional phys dmg reduction from anything, are gonna have the same amount of physical damage reduction no matter the amount of armour they have. Is that correct?

    Armor and evasion both need to be far more intuitive. As a long time player I still have to get them a significant amount of thought, I would guess 90% or more of new players totally misunderstand these stats and they are literally some of the first stats you are introduced to in the game (you start with gear that has only these stats).

    The problem with evasion or block as primary defensive layers is that they can never get so good that you won't get hit. So when you do get hit... you die. Armour only mitigates physical, so if you get a big elemental hit, you die. And vice versa. There is no defense that can let you take one of those big hits and survive... unless your build is so tanky it can't scratch even white mobs.

    One thing not mentioned, which I'm not sure if everyone knows. Stuff like wind dancer and dodge boot enchant does not activate on dots, so you get full damage reduction. If ya are eating shit on dodge builds, give it a try

    read Mark_GGG's post in 2013. Damage taken as is not damage conversion. " Damage taken as" is " Damage taken as" in terms of receiving damage . It does not work the same as the "damage conversion" when dealing damage.

      The important distinction here seems to be that (as suggested by the PoE wiki page on receiving damage) converted damage - such as that dealt by SRS-type enemies - will be mitigated by either both resistances or the more favorable one. I'm not entirely sure how this works, though. Whereas shifted damage doesn't retain its original properties.

Dealing damage can double dip increase Phys and lightning damage if you have phy to lightning conversion (and even more dip if you convert to cold and fire until convert to chaos), but on receiving end damage taken as calculated before res and armour, so you never able to double dip res

      Endurance charges phys reduction applies to damage over time and max resists help elemental and chaos over time

      There's a cluster jewel notable that gives u a lot of damage over time resistances. Works well if u play a bleed or any dot build since it has a damage over time multiplier with it.

    armour cant mitigate 100% of a hit soo.. 1000 armour = 100 hit, 75% resist drop it to 25 hit? is that right?

    i know its 1 month ago but when it comes to lifesteal...i need to check if i got my theorycraft right. there is this stat called total life leech recovery per second. this stat makes actual life leech totally useless. i mean there are sooo many nodes where you get 0.4% of dmg/attack as life leech. but in my opinion those are totally useless. because later on if you hit for lets say 2mil....0.4% life leech is already 10k life. with 2h weapons i attack 2 or 3 times per second with onslaught/multistrike. so if i got your grafic right thats 3 blood bags with 10k life flowing in each second.... however the maximum amount of life i get per second is 1k. with vaal pact 2k. how long does a blood bag stay? until its empty? and the max is 5 bags? currently i have like 2% since i am a slayer. what good does it to me to have 5 bags with 60k life each. 300k life in total BUT only 1k flows to my health pool? the only good thing i can see about it is when i have overleech and run away to dodge i still got 300k life flowing into me. so yeah its nice for mapping since if you reach the next pack your 1k/sec is still dropping on you... and it certainly helps with bad performance if it stops att in lag you still get those 1k/sec. but thats my point even if i only have 0.4% i still get 5*10k bloodbags and i do have the same effect but just not that long. and normally you will hit again so it does not need to be that long to begin with so it still makes the stat useless if 0.4% has the same effect like 2% just not that long...no?

    Mathematically, if you take 1.15 x 1.06 you have 1.219 and the additive was 21.

    It would be nice you guys went to standard. And do actual builds. Prep 2 or 3 characters with full respec and items ready; so at least viewers have a good visual demo on how can it be done.

      I think he did a good job until the leech part. He tried using too many different analogies which made it hyper confusing.

      looking back at that part of the video too it's hilarious because his infographic does a GREAT job at simplifying and explaining it. He just mangled everything while trying to voice it.

    Leech for the average player is significantly more simple than leech for the minmaxer. Basically: When you Hit with Damage that has Leech, you gain the Leech % of your Damage (after the target's mitigation) as Life at a rate of 2% of your maximum life per second, capped at 10% of your maximum life, until either the Leeched portion of damage runs out, or you reach maximum life (and leech stops, unless you have 'leech effects do not stop at full life') whichever stopping point happens first. You can have as many instances of leech as you want, however (by default) you can never recover more than 20% of your life per second from leeching. This is effectively 10 hits to max leech rate. Beware that leeched damage is rounded against you, so if the 0.5% leech on your damage is less than 1, you won't leech from that hit. For 0.5% you need to deal at least 200 damage to leech at all.

      They didnt know go into maximum recovery per life leech which is extremely important for overleech. it governs how long your overleech lasts. so scion slayer overleech is gutted by 50 percent which means only a 2.5s overleech which is very underwhelming. however a pure slayer will get 10seconds of overleech in 3.13 with the brutal fervour stats.

      I play elementalist elemental hit, no reflect, permanent 3k hp elemental shield, max res, 6k hp, steelskin, 9 golem buffed Regen and phys reduction, vaal grace, Phase acrobatics, a shield still get oneshot by sirus dominated baran thaumaturgists sometimes

    you should add a class about build archetypes explaining key gems, like impale for melee builds, crit vs not crit build and when to covnert your build to a crit build if you should, life vs low life builds, eq and eo, mana builds.....

    What I have learnt from this video:
    Physical damage is awfully implemented and makes the game difficult to balance.
    Either it will eventually randomly oneshot you (evasion) or it will still randomly oneshot you (armour).
    Both of them mitigate small hits well, any effective physical damage reduction comes in flat reduction from Basalt / Endurance charges etc etc.
    Basalt providing 15% is more than the base 3 endurance charges can provide and just requires mashing a flask constantly and isn't interesting to build around.
    Personally I'd love if they redid physical damage so it worked better with the other damage types.
    This would also require them changing how armour works (and potentially evasion).

    God damn I just wanted to find out how defense works I wasn't prepared for this university lecture. Evasion seems cracked compared to armor, I can't for the life of me figure out how to stack enough armor to make a meaningful difference on my elementalist. I'm trying some form of hybrid on this character to boost my effective hp and I'm capping out at like 4k armor post-flask at act 9, though I'm waiting until I finish campaign to really invest in gear, I'm working with trash I picked up over the last few acts.
    Maybe I should just stack evasion + es, shove passives into es + max hp, and leech.
    If anyone has any insight on this, please let me know. I'm looking for shortcuts in my brain on how to think about this, and there are too many options for me to wrap my brain around right now. All I know for sure is I need to stack SOME form of mitigation, because even 10k es will get chewed up with capped ele resist and ~50% chaos res.

    well so far my strongest char not interms of dps too but hey 65% dodge not maxed but stil i can stand in middle of mobs and not die in a bink of an eye and survive alot longer than any char i palyed in my entire poe life.
