I started doing your exercises 2 days ago and I feel such a difference in my voice. I appreciate your in depth explanations so I know what I should feel for. Thank you so much! 😊❤
inSANEly helpful. I'm doing some straw phonation to keep my voice active while sick, and these exercises felt especially therapeutic. Thank you so much!
So glad this was helpful! Just a reminder to be gentle with your voice while your sick and give yourself time to heal and recover. :) Hope you feel better soon!
You are such a great Whitney Nichole, Namaste and thank you for all these great videos and explanations. Practicing with your videos for more than a year) Keep doing what you do)
I was looking for just this kind of video yesterday, then this shows up in my feed today - magic! Great explanations, Thankyou! My singing straw is in order so can’t wait to practice these exercises when it arrives 😁
@@SingingStraw Oh wow - my singing straws arrived today and I just ran through these exercises using two straws to get me started. It was tricky to get the hang of but then felt pretty good on my voice. Just for kicks I tried that last exercise on a 'meh' sound like you suggested after i'd done them all with the straws, and my voice just didn't break or flip at the point it normally would. This is AMAZING! I cannot wait to see what happens when I keep using them - THANKYOU!!
your videos have absolutely transformed my voice. I had a lot of trouble with my voice being too breathy and now it sounds so clear and I have better control. Thankyou so so much!!
Hi Bianca. Did the singing straw help you be less breathy? My singing teacher said my vocal folds aren't closing when I sing so I too am really breathy. Hoping this will help 💜
Very interesting video... In France we talk about "throat voice" instead of chest voice...it makes more sense to me as if I try to sing higher notes with that "speaking" voice, it hurts my throat... and long term I feel that's how you can injure your vocal folds. I was experimenting with the exercises and truth is my voice is already a mix of both sounds... it's actually hard and painful for me to produce a pure "throat" sound. I guess that's what growing up singing in choirs does...when you have to sing loud and a lot, you find that protective position that is the healthiest...Does that make sense? I still have a crack that can happen sometimes after 3-4 lowest notes of my register which I sometimes tend to try to hit with more of that throat position, but I'm working on it... Any advice on how to keep that mixed sound at the very bottom of my range? Thanks a lot, I'm loving all your videos :-)
Totally makes sense! Singing with the straw (try to get to the single 3mm straw) will help in those lower notes so they aren't too "throaty" or pressed. Try to think of your voice as all one continuous sound, not centered in any location in your body. If it starts to feel too "throaty" try to add more airflow and balance, lower your volume and imagine sending the sound forward towards your teeth/cheeks. Good luck!
Thank you so much! This is another practical and extremely helpful video! I am looking forward to many more to come. Question- regarding volume while using the straw... should the vocal exercises be sung at any particular volume or can it vary as long as there isn’t any physical tension/pulling/strain? Thanks again!
Hello, I have recovered from vocal nodules. Now my cords are weak from not using them. The ENT Doctor said the nodules are gone. I’m still struggling. Any Advice is welcome.
Whether u have nodules are not, you are u, and so no nodules doesn’t necessarily make u less but rather it makes you you. Whether u sing “good” or “bad”, your voice is like no other, man.
Take it slow and start with 2-3 straws at once, only move down in diameter when you're ready. It takes time to build back your strength. You've got this!
So I've been doing this for weeks and I just noticed how you puff your cheeks as you blow into the straw. I started doing the same thing and noticed it takes the pressure off and allows me to use the straw with more ease. I initially started with two straws and have now gone down to one...anywho it was helpful. Am I doing it right?
Puffing your cheeks out is just a personal preference! If it helps you, then for sure keep doing it! But it is not necessary for the straw to do its magic. As long as all the air is going through the straw and you are feeling the resistance, you are probably doing it right! :)
hi! this is probably a stupid question but can the straw help me find my mix voice if I haven’t already been able to sing in it before? Or do I need to already be able to sing in mix
Absolutely! I always like to remind people that chest, head and mix voice are all metaphors for different colors of our sound, and that when you reframe it like that, you are already using you "mix"! Ultimately you want more balance, and the S/S will absolutely help with that!
Hi! It can be weird hearing your own voice on a recording, but YES the straw and this exercise, the challenge, and consistent practicing WILL help you hear a difference in your voice. :)
hi, im a bass. so when we are moving to the higher parts of the excercise, do we have to gradually switch to head voice or we have to do the whole excercise with the chest voice.
Is there a chance to get the staws in Germany? I wanted to purchase the pro kid. Taxes and shipping costs make it way to expensive-even after the 10% discount it is more than 97 Dollars ;-( I appreciate your answer.♥
I intentionally don't mention a vowel shape because I prefer to let your body feel out what feels good (also we're only in control of so much when using the straw, we can't use lips as freely) so start with a neutral uh like "mud" and then allow your shaping to shift and be flexible!
@@SingingStraw awesome thank you so much. Just wanted to tell you as well how great your straws are, and your videos. I have had more breakthroughs with your straws then with all the other vocal exercises. Great job and thanks for all you do
It's a special stray designed to help you sing better! It is a semi-occluded vocal tract” exercise, which means that as you vocalize, the air coming out of your mouth is partially blocked. This creates a resistance in the vocal tract, which sends energy back to the vocal folds and helps them vibrate more efficiently. :) You can learn more at www.singingstraw.com
@@SingingStraw I understand what it does, I’ve been doing it for years. I just don’t understand how your “singing straw” is any different to the stainless steel straw I use now!
Lesson starts 6:56 in case you have already listened to the explanation
Singing straw has strengthened my voice and even after covid has helped me with my breathing and holding my notes.
SO happy to hear that!! Keep up the great work :)
i know it is kind of off topic but does anyone know of a good place to watch newly released series online?
@Kendrick Byron I use Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
You have a bright, healthy speaking voice. Clearly you know what you’re talking about with these straw exercises 😉
Thank you!!

I'd start at a comfortable volume, once you're comfortable you can start adding dynamics as you would in song!

Hi Birgit, because we are US-based, shipping to Germany can cost a little bit more. We do ship all over the world!
quick question, when using the straw should we be doing different vowel sounds , eee, ahhh, aaaa etc?
