- In this video, we are building what I like to call "the top frame". It's basically the skeletal structure for the top half of the tent. It looks complex but it's really not that hard to put together!! By the end of this video, you can kind of get an idea of what this thing will look like! Let me know how I'm doing so far! I am currently builidng my rooftop tent based on youir videos and wanted to mention that you really thinking ahead and about viewers. Like that mention that you won't give sizes for the top frame because the base may be slightly different and you are absolutely right. My base is slightly different (metrical measurement, had to cut plywood in two pieces because I need to fit it in the elevator etc etc.) and I am happy that you describing the idea and the way to do it instead of just giving sizes and leave us with that. Thank you again!

Considering how expensive roof top tents are (especially hard shelled ones) this might be the way to go for someone that is somewhat handy with tools.
What i would love to know is why they are so expensive in the first place

This is a great video for my purpose. I want to build a pop up roof like your first one to go on a truck bed for truck camping but light enough for my daughter and son in law to remove easily, minus the clam shell design id say its perfect thank you for posting and you gained a subscriber ! Keep building cool stuff

Just a thought: The front angle could be set so that when the tent is open the foot area is completely vertical. This should really help maximize the space inside.

Thanks again for making these videos, I wanted to let know that I really like the simplicity, and I like that it’s going to be super affordable, I was hoping to draw this up on my cad program so I could make all the exact same parts and pieces as you, basically I’d make all the parts ahead of time and assemble it once all the parts where in hand. I have to admit I was a little bummed when you said you where not going to provide dimensions any more. I’m gonna keep on watching because I love this project idea, but I am just a little bummed out. 😕

The detail about the spacing for the tent material will save many of us some debugging time. I am looking for a lighter weight alternative to plywood for the top half material. I am open to suggestions. The white bumpy sheets are more expensive than plywood and have a similar weight. I am trying to beat that weight.
The tent I will finally build will be as light and aerodynamic as I can make it while being somewhat simple. Then I will weigh it down with an awesome sleep pad and ac unit made from a fridge. My goal is to be on the lower side of 100 pounds. I will probably use aluminum L metal for the framework. I am preparing for my bucket list MTB adventure before my body fails me.

Great Video! One suggestion, you could angle your bulkheads so that when the roof is fully up, you would have a series of shelves, great for wallet, cell phone, drinks, etc Best wishes!

Great video I've been looking for a roof top tent diy forever and there is really no others. I watched a few of the other vids you out and you had mentioned you were limited in width o the 4'sheet of plywood. I make wood driftboats and to make width and lengths not possible to get on factory cut wood I used scarf joints. It's a lot of work but worth it in the end.
Yeah, I want to do another build for those that need something wider than 48" even tho I don't really have the need for it. Anything wider would look funny on my Gen 3 4runner haha. I figured I would need to do some type of complex joinery in conjunction with fiberglass.
@@PatrickRemington no fiberglass but you do use epoxy and a ratio of usually 8:1 or 12:1for how you bevel the edges to overlap so for example half inch plywood at a 12:1 gets a 6inch bevel on the two sides you want to join together.

Seeing the gap in your rounded corner (knowing you're not done yet...), makes me want to suggest whether you know about filling it with some glue well spread inside it (I use an old toothbrush) and then mash in some sawdust and work it in, dressing it out with your hands, a little proud, so you can do a finish touch sanding on the area. Since you're using Tightbond III, you'll have nice waterproof filler there... Best wood filler known to man!

When I watched your first video I think it was close to a year ago I never thought they would be so fantastic. You must of spent a lot time figuring this all out ?Thanks so much ,just have a couple questions so far .You said leave a 3/8 over hang when I've been drawing my plans I left much more is it not required and the small little pieces you cut on I think 45,s were they just to fill in the small spaces in the corners and is it important to use a piano hinge rather than just 3 or 4 across the front. How long till you post your next one I can't wait . Thanks again and the longer the video the better can't wait to get started on mine in the spring.Dale
I'll let the main man answer you question but here are my 2 cents. The 45s are joint gussett, they add strength to the butt joint. As far as your joinery, hardware (hinges), locks and mounts to the car, you should keep in mind that this box will have a lot of forces acting on it. Driving 70 mph, hard stops. Keep the liabilities of this thing flying off your car in mind.
Haha! Thank you!! Yeah, I figured that if I was going to tackle a project like this I would really need to step up my game to be able to really do it justice! That's part of the reason it took me a while to get the project going. It's one thing to be able to build something its a totally different ball game trying to video and explain every step clearly while your building. It also takes 10x longer than it normally should but it's getting easier! Thanks for sticking with me!
The 3/8 overhang on the outside isn't as important as just having room on the other side for the fabric to be able to attach to. Refer to 1:07 in the video. The 45s are just there for strengthening that joint as Rishi said. You could do without them in hindsight but they can't hurt! You could use 3 or 4 strong hinges across the front. That would be fine. Like I said it the video that's just not the look I'm going for. I'll probably space them out about a week or so apart until I catch up to where I am in the build. It's not quite done so but if I space them out I'll hopefully I'll finish it so that yall are waiting around on me. Hope this helps!

I need you to build electric pop up rooftop tent! I want to put one of these on the top of my class A RV with access from ceiling vent into the tent for a “loft”. Have you done/seen a fully electric open option with button or remote open?

Thanks for the videos, I have been looking for some like this. You mintioned wanting to got to a trailer at some time. will you build a RTT into one or set a RTT on top. I may use your methods to build a pop top, It would seem that after one had the RTT built all that would have to be done is to cut a large hole in the bottom and mount it to a camper. But what do you think.

Yeah, a little bit... I'm really just trying to make it look as sleek as possible and reduce as much weight as I can. I could go even more "low profile" but I wouldn't be able to store anything inside of it when closed. I really like that I can to keep my ladder and a few other things up there at all times.
Hi Patrick, I'm not to sure, but it looked to me that the bulk heads have different angle cuts on the ends from front to back. The small end had what seems to be a greater angle and less to the middle and then to the end piece. Then again, it could be the camera distorting the view. This being at around the 8.43 point in the video. Cheers, Paul
You're not wrong! I took all three pieces and measured about 4 or 5 inches from the top corner (the part that I cut off). Then cut from the bottom corner to that mark. So the 6in bulkhead will have less of an angle than the 4in. Once the plywood skin is put on (next video) you'll see how it looks. It actually gives it a cool sleek look. Good eye!

Great job, once again! I'm curious as to why you chose the hinge end vs. the other design you built...
I just want to try to build something I hadn't already built. I also thought it would be easier to build without the 4 complex lifting arms. This one just uses two gas struts. I am getting towards the end of this build and I can honestly say I like this design WAAAAAYYYY more. Soo much more room!

Patrick Remington I like this hinge as it will be easy to climb up to on my trailer. But, how is there more room? You surely lose room with this design
Harley Cross you don't actually have more room but it feels way more spacious without the top of the tent right there at your head. My next video coming out will show this.

Nah, In the next video, we'll be adding a plywood skin to this frame and then doing a bunch of epoxy work. Once all that's done it's not moving. Or at least not very much

That would think it would take a lot of epoxy and fiberglass to cover it. I'm not sure tho! Really like the idea! It might make it a little lighter.
Patrick Remington thanks for the idea! I am gonna cover the roof of my van with vynil or release agent and make a mold of it. Then i am gonna make a fiberglass or maybe a fleece clone of it and start building the sides in to make a slim pop top thats custom fitted and doesn't look like an eyesore!

For cleaner lines why not have the upper and lower outer rims be that same dimensions and just build your needed offset to the inside? This would give you a really sleek and clean look when closed. Looks good so far though!
Bryan Mills I know what you mean. It's kind of hard to explain but for this build I'll have a weather seal between the top and bottom and then on the outside of the top I'll have an aluminum strip that over laps the weather seal and base so you don't see that seam. You can see that aluminum strip on my other white tent in the finished product video. I'm also doing it this was for simplicity. Some might not have to know how or the tools to do all that even though it might seem simple
Very important question - what is the weight of your RTT?
Andre Yevt well it's not done yet my first tent was about 130lbs. I'm expecting this one to be less. I'm shooting for 115-120lbs. Very comparable to tents on the market made from fiberglass.
Would an air nailer and glue provide enough strength, or do you recommend screws?
Harley Cross 🤷🏻♂️ probably.. I've never done it that way tho.. The epoxy fillets are really what gives it its strength.

Used full wood, made your rooftop will be more heavy, isn't it ?
All depends on the dimensions and amount of wood. I plan to use 1/8" panel with fiberglass on my build.
