It is a superb lens. Even the new Sony 85 1.4 GMII is only slighty better in contrast when you shoot against light. It is by far the best 85mm to by if you want to save money and take a superb lens.
The most honest review of the sigma 85mm 1.4 dg dn I have seen to date. Others try to minimize the issues of distortion and vignetting. Others don't even mention them. I don't like a deliberately imperfect lens just to make it smaller, I don't think it's a correct strategy. I loved the old gigantic and iconic Sigma 85mm HSM Canon version and I have always considered its size and weight to be a signal of build quality and optical excellence (like Otus). The Sony 85 1.4 GM is not that much bigger than the Sigma and is almost distortion free. It is probably not as sharp as the sigma but it is not a bad lens at all. Nice work Sam
Great video, you covered a lot of the downsides in detail and a lot of other videos from different people didn’t touch up too much on the subjects. Thank you.
Amazing video! Many details that you covered are very new to me. What's your view on Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8? Their prices are similar and i just cant decide which one to buy.
You can’t go wrong either way… I haven’t used the Zeiss so can’t provide too much insight but I opted for the extra stop of the Sigma and the extra controls on the lens. The Zeiss is going to be a tiny bit smaller/lighter and has optical image stabilization - big if you’re doing handheld video, probably less so for photography.
@@TheOtherSamMallory Thank you so much for your reply Sam! I think i would go for the extra stop too, but then now i'm stucked with 85 1.4gm with this Sigma 85 1.4.... Struggling to buy my first portrait lens
I know Sony will soon announce their 85mm F/1.4 mk2 but I'm going on holidays soon and I really need a new 85mm, sold my old Sony 85mm 1.8. Should I buy the Sigma or wait for the new Sony? 🤔
With this lens I keep the in-camera lens compensation on, and if I am shooting RAW I use Lightroom distortion correction… but it may just be the 85mm perspective if you’re used to wider focal lengths!
What do you think of lenses trade distortion and vignetting issues for a smaller size?

Love my 85mmm, and agree about all the crazy distortion…..Lightroom pulls it back in nicely
The 'trick' was amazing and super helpful to understand the potential of the lens! Thanks.
Glad to hear it 👍🏻

Thanks for the comment Andrea! I totally agree it is quite odd to have deliberate imperfections.
Excessive size is just as much of a “deliberate imperfection” as is distortion. Everything is a trade off.
But the Sony GM have a lot of fringe and chromatic aberration as well as a slower and less accurate autofocus

Thanks, Jesus! Hopefully it’s helpful 😀
Very nice examples. I’m trying to justify picking this up though I already have the Tamron 70-180
It definitely has its own niche, different from a 70-180!
The only lens that doesn’t directly make me any money but still my favourite lens.
Great review
Great video as always. Thank you!
Great video.....your channel is so underrated
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Great video brother!

Loved the video
Can you show us how to do a firmware update on this Lens please ?
It's all here: www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/a020_85_14/?tab=support&local=firmware
Any clue how to fix face distortion? Faces look unrealistically fat. I’m using sigma 85mm 1.4 w sony a6600

@@TheOtherSamMallory sony a6600 is apsc which is 135mm lens if using 85mm but nothing really helps
