What would you use your writing robot for? Mine writes postcards for me.
I was initially attracted to plotters so I could connect one to my analog computer and use it to draw designs based on equations (like Lissajous figures or Euler's curves). I didn't realize it would be so good at handwriting. I might try to create a tiny "handwritten " journal with a plotter.
@@pbartmessthat sounds great, I have a plan to get all my weekly notes written into a journal too, easier to pick-up and read to look back on things. Exciting project be fun to see what you do.
when using the fonts on Quantum can the sizes be changed? For example, it says Scriptalizer Version: 5 Handwriting Style: Printed Suggested Font Size: 20 pt Languages.
Can it be made larger than 20pt?
Hi, Dan! Great video, I'm hoping to use my iDraw plotter to do handwriting as well. However I'm having trouble even getting it started, I can't seem to find the correct software for 1.0 version. I would love some help!
I’ve been wondering about this process. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Dan!
Any time! It's interesting to see how it works.
I'm looking forward to the more in-depth video! Thanks for this one.
More to come! Got a couple of other things to do first and we'll get back to it.
Good and clear explanation that writing with a plotter isn't a standard cup of tea and it takes several steps to let your plotter sort of write texts..
Still on the "sort of write texts" stage.
@@revdancatt Well looking at the tweets Kitty send out, you're making progress that's impressing.
Great video, straightforward, concise. Thanks so much for sharing!
Always a pleasure!
Thank you very much for this video. I enjoyed every bit of it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Extremely clear and useful. Thank you!
🤘
This is so clear and helpful, it should be linked from the AxiDraw docs. I couldn't figure out any of the Hershey Text stuff so ended up inventing my own SVG font format in Processing. I regret nothing!
Always more fun to write your own, you learn more that way.
One other wider context thing to note is that handwriting fonts are increasingly getting used (in the U.S. at least) on advertising and fundraising mail, so if you're sending an addressed envelope rather than a postcard it's probably a good idea to give some external indication on the envelope that this is actually not junk but something interesting and worth opening.
Hopefully the return address will see to that, but I may start rubber stamping the back too.
Interesting that the "authentic" handwriting junk mail is picking up, I'm not surprised though.
when using the fonts on Quantum can the sizes be changed? For example, it says Scriptalizer Version: 5 Handwriting Style: Printed Suggested Font Size: 20 pt Languages.
Can it be made larger than 20pt?
Yeah, the size can be changed in InkScape. That's just a suggested size for a normal pen, i.e. if you're plotting with a biro, anything smaller and some of the lines may run together. But if you used a super fine nib (and I've used a 0.1mm) then you can go tiny!! Also if you go a lot bigger you'd probably want a chunky pen. It's mainly _suggested_ size that looks best for a standard pen, you could make each letter a meter tall if you wanted.
thank you for this video. how about writing yourself like on an ipad or paper, scanning it and converting it to svgs. what would this progress look like? is it possible to get the text not only outlined but filled like a single line font?
i just got the idraw plotter and started to play around with it. liking it very much so far
Scanning it gives you the outline. But for my stuff I'm using a ReMarkable eInk tablet, which exports single strokes and that's what I'm using to encode my own handwriting.
iDraw now has a Merge tool that acts like the scriptalizer so you no longer have to copy and paste
It's pretty cool honestly, you can also add kerning, base line jitter, etc. really makes it look realistic!
Great video btw!
Yeah, looks to work well with their new iAuto plotter with the paper feed, those two together look like a great match.
I would love to get my hands on their iAuto plotter, I have their A3 and A4 models right now and both are excellent
@@touchofturbo Yup, I have a friend with one and they say it's pretty good.
