Good project, but do not give up. You may try to increase the Z Lift Height and surface should be flat i hope you continue, this is how we learn

really interesting, at first i thought it would use ai to generate handwriting, wich is pretty hard as proved by "stuff made here"

@Pepi This is a great project! I would suggest some 3 in 1 oil or sewing machine oil for your lubricant. WD40 is a water displacing penetrating oil that dries out and can make your plotter malfunction by increasing the resistance to movement.
The problem with the pen going up when it should go down sounds like a problem with the controlling logic. I.E. the logic is inverted. Try flipping the command to raise/lower the pen. I don't have a pen plotter and I'm not going to make one right now. But this project shows me some things I was curious about with Chat GPT. Thanks for this video. I think that documenting your progress like this will help a lot of people. Too many project videos do not show the awkward or difficult parts of figuring out how to do something. This creates a blind spot for potential difficulties others might experience when recreating the project. You do a good job presenting your work.

Sorry for the late reply, but this comment is so encouraging, thank you so much for your words of encouragement! We really hope that such videos help people understand the process of creating/ making hardware projects better, so we are really happy that you feel that way :) Thanks for your tip on WD-40, I actually never knew that, and that will defo help in my next project!!

this is a really nice idea! I might have to try that on my custom plotter.
Regarding the GRBL code changes, I've never used it but I was thinking that there maybe is a command-line tool to do the uploads and you could redirect them?

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement and your tip!! I didn't think of using the command-line tool, and I'll actually try to test it out when re-visiting the project! Let me know how it goes for you/ if the command-line idea works for you!

GRBL pen plotter was a nightmare for me too so I load the drawing into "Inkscape" then save it as a .dfx file (which saves it as mathmatic points now load this .dxf file into F-engrave by "Scorchworks" and F-engrave will convert the file into gcode. Now on the penplotter set the pen at the 0/0 location and in the F-engrave be sure to set the tool depth to -.003 now I use a ball point pen to draw on my plotter and I take the pen apart and lock only the bottom barrel into the holder (remove the spring) now drop the ink pen tube into the barrel now adjust only the barrel so when the Z=-0.003 the pen tip is on the paper and when the z=3.0 (pen up) the pen tip is off the paper also set the Z up as 3.0mm in F-engrave. I hope you understand

if you use a bearing instead of that L shape you will surely have a smoother sliding of the X axis "my Opinion"
