Guess I'm feeling nostalgic tonight...been flipping around listening to these songs that were playing at the dances in Pittsburgh when I was in high school. Today's music cannot come close to these wonderful sounds! From the north side of Pittsburgh...Cathy, graduated from Perry High.
This is a diamond record a classic timeless Arlene smith was and still is an awesome lead a voice of an angel.one of my top ten lady song's cheers gazza uk
There's a religious quality about this song. Probably it's the heavenly voices of the Chantels that makes it so. Loved "Maybe" from the first day I heard it over 50 years ago. The song still has the power to move me emotionally.
Doowop came well before my generation, but I love it nonetheless! I was introduced to it by a college professor of mine who grew up in the 50s in Brooklyn and for this I'm very grateful...
This was part of a fantastic playlist that my mother thoroughly enjoyed for her 80th birthday celebration. Had to get some doo wop songs and this playlist fit the bill!
I remember Jackie Cryder from Albion, Pa singing this song at the dances in downtown Albion. I was a junior at Northwestern High School at the time...I remember sitting at the top of Wells Ave. listening to him sing this at night beacause I was too young to go to the dance. Ahhh sweet memories. Cheryl Kemling
This song I have looked for along time . Now i found it thank you so much for posting one of The Girl Groups greats and this song chokes me up that voice is so beautiful keep posting Doo Woop and thank you
LIke Housedart...I too walked a way in Rocheter,NY (Irondequoit), and in the high snow, to buy this fabulous and very popular record in 45rpm in 1957. We went to Esler's TV at the corner of Titus and Cooper Rd whom had all the area popular tunes of the time. Great song that brings back many memories of the time!
Funny how memory works - that must have been a major snowstorm in upstate NY in the winter of 57-58. This great old tune has always reminded me of being in Cosman's at the corner of Genesee and South in Auburn, with Arlene wailing it from the store's old Philco radio. And, whaddya know - I had also always connected it to piles of snow and slush.
A party closer record at my oldest sister's parties in Detroit. I was the record spinner at 11 years old. It seemed like all of Northeastern High was there. No lights and very little talking going on. What a song!!
I think Rathahonni was misunderstood. I remember there was a time when "bad" meant "good"; and this certainly was fresh and new. And it was probably written on the schoolbus on the way to St. Anthony's in the Bronx. lol Fantastic classic, btw. Thanks for posting it!!
John Frusciante has a great taste in music... if you're a fan, you know. I'm sure he's responsible for a few thousand views of this video, and that's a great thing, because the original Chantels version is just so great.
@lostsurfer660 Check out John Frusciante, he's influence by the harmony of doo-wop, and just about everything else. There's almost no good music around today, but he's one of the best ever; like the ruby in the dust.
the irony is that it became a hit because George Goldner, the original producer, paid DJs and others in cash, girls and coke to have the black songs played on the white stations, which is how R&B and rock and roll went mainstream and why he's the father of rock and roll (and girl groups). So now those who own his copyrights ban it from being played, how funny (and dumb) is that ?.
I walked 2 miles in snow covered Rochester,N.Y. to buy this song
in 1957. I'd do it again today if something like this came out!
I was born in 1957, too. Too late to be a part of this music scene, but this is where my heart has always been. Love this tune.

Brings back so-o-o-o many pleasant loving memories of my early teens...

Arlene Smith was the perfect lead singer for this group. What a voice!!! Powerful and sweet all at the same time.
this one definitely goes on the best ever list. ms. smith sings from her soul.

I saw the Chantels back in the 80s at a Doo Wop show at the old Felt Forum. They were and still are great.
Classic doo wop song! Where is this beautiful music today? We all would benefit from such great songs!!
I'm glad that the sound is back on this video. Absolutely beautiful song. A classic.

Of all the girl groups from this era of music there was none better than the Chantels and the lead singer, Arlene Smith is fantastic.

why is audio deleted here and still available elsewhere on utube?
anyway great post - a song that is very dear to my heart. Thanks

why women those days were more beautiful than women today?
it was because they dressed like lady's
the men too
Eduardo J. Pacheco that's hella superficial, that shit don't matter at all....
They were from an era of class and etiquette
because only the beautiful ones got famous and therefore you just get to know those
