I love my Phantom 2s, got me through my marathon training like a dream!
I'm used to minimally padded zero drop trail shoes but I do struggle with achilles issues if I run too far on firm or rocky trails, so I knew I wanted to try something a bit more plush with a small heel-toe drop but that still had a wide toe-box and a design that suited my midfoot strike, and these were perfect.
I saw Foo Fighters right up front at the Forum in Los Angeles in 2021 around our 10th anniversary. The Foos are heroes of mine and we not only got to watch Taylor Hawkins beautifully sing Queen's "Somebody to Love," but we watched then 11-year-old Nandi Bushell crush the drums on "Everlong." Taylor brought her up to bow and throw her drumsticks into the crowd. She absolutely beamed one and when Taylor egged her to throw out the other, she pulled it close to her chest to keep it and then they joyfully exited the stage. Incomparably adorable moment.
It was an amazing show and Taylor's passing a few months later only makes it more bittersweet to think about.
QD: My dad and I flew out to California (from eastern PA) to see Metallica's S&M² show they played with the San Francisco Symphony back in 2019. It was the most sonically impressive thing I've ever witnessed. The amount of bass coming from the strings vibrated parts of me that I didn't know could be vibrated. Best show I've ever seen.
Topo seems to be really good. Wow. Will have to check them out.

QOD u2 concert oh man.
QD: I saw the Fray at Red Rocks one summer evening as a storm built up over Denver behind the stage. As they played you could watch lightning off in the distance. Eventually it started raining a bit as Isaac Slade, the lead, played the piano and sang in the open rain. It was awesome.
How are you so off on pronouncing Topo, it can't get any more simple of a name
QD: Phish 2/28/03 was life changing for me. I went with some college friends and it was a historic performance in Phish history.
QotD: Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Mother's Milk Tour. Early 90's, late 80's I think it was.
Well, maybe it was the most unrememberable concert. It was just when they started to get really famous and the club in Rotterdam was a bit too small. It was packed. Right at the start I joined "the pit", which was quite extreme and somehow, no idea how, I fainted. Never happened before, never happened after. I woke up in an ambulance and was later told they stopped the music and was dragged on stage by the drummer Chad Smith and carried backstage.
QD: Band “Switchfoot”, small venue 5 years ago with my brother-ln-law. Great company, 20 feet from stage. Band came out into the audience perform. Took me back to my earlier days!
QD: Elvis Presley with my mom and dad in Memphis when I was in the 4th grade. He died just a few years later.

Been wearing the Topo trail shoes for several years and love them!!!! If you like wide toe boxes, but snug mid-foot and heel, check them out. The newer Zipfoam is superb.

QD: Most memorable concert is a difficult one, as there's many memorable ones. But one of the most memorable I've been to has to be Audioslave back in 2005. Amazing concert with the highlight being Chris Cornell doing Black Hole Sun acoustic with the whole crowd singing along for the whole song.
The thing I love about Topo is they are a very supportive fit. I love how the heel cradles you, and the arch and midsole lock you into place letting your toes splay out and relax.
They're a very unique fit,v and brilliant at the same time and that soft lining makes them super comfortable.
I have the spectre 2 for now, and I'm impressed at just how grippy that slick outsole is, even managing some light trail running with ease.
Plus they run and feel like a more traditional shoe. I do however miss the feel of my more regular shoes, as you feel faster but that's something I'll have to live with due to having pf.
But it's safe to say goodbye altra, you we're good but you've lost your way I'm afraid.

Seth, I was going to message you yesterday asking when you were going to talk that TOPO.
IM telling you, YOU need to get a pair of CYCLONE 2 from TOPO. It compares to Endorphin 2's w/out a tpu plate, but a better fit and upper. LIGHT AND FAST. TRUST ME, test it!
A gait specialist recommended Topo, so I found a pair on sale last fall on sale, the MTN Racer 2 and I love them for long or short easy pace runs. They give my feet good support vs the 4 pairs of Altras of the years which I was frequently tweaking my ankle in. They also provide great traction on sandy desert trails. Good to know I can go lighter with a bit more expensive model. If you have foot or other ortho issues try out a Topo shoe!
They just came out with the new mountain racer you should check them out. I haven’t used them yet but they look promising. It’s a little more cushion then the last model.
Try the Cyclone 2. Great non-plated road shoe. Also, it’s “Toe-Poe.” Not Top-O. Tony Post is the namesake of the brand and founder.
The topo spector is a very good daily trainer..the ortholite insole is a sponge and goes flat immediately..use an insole from almost any saucony and that makes the topo a much better shoe..as a bonus if you have narrower feet get the women's shoes and they fit much better..
QD: So many to choose from. Florence and the Machine 2015. Florence Welch is just a tour de force. Bruce Springsteen 2012, because he is The Boss. Depeche Mode 1990, one of my first concerts. The Verve closing the Hultsfred festival in 1994.
QD: 1998 Pearl Jam. It was my first concert and I got up in the middle of the night to get in line for tickets. The seats were still 3 rows away but the girl I was dating and I had a blast. Good times.
QD: Easy Coldplay Wembley last year, my god what a night they throw on such an amazing show I left feeling like it changed me, gave me hope for the future 🥰
I picked up a pair of MTN Racer 2s - tried out six other pairs of shoes and the Hoka Challenger was really the only shoe that came close (out of my size) for a commuter trail shoe. Looking for something less aggressive than my Peregrine and the Topo are fantastic.
Very interesting shoe! Best concert was Pantera, Sentrum Scene, Oslo, Norway, Far beyond driven tour, 1994. Have heard its regarded one of their best concerts ever, so I was lucky. Have seen many of the greats, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Metallica, David Bowie. But that Pantera concert was just special.
Qod. The Barr Brothers held " An album nighly" shows in Montreal (and Toronto). 3 nights, 1 album per night (plus many cool cameos from other artist of the label). It was just amazing to live thru their musical evolution with them. 💚
Close second, have to be Tool (Montreal 2017)
QOD: first concert, 1978, Kiss and The Rockets, Olympia Arena, Detroit, Michigan. For a 12 year old kid, during that time, there was nothing bigger!!!
QD. This question just came up the other day at a post race committee party as we were sitting around on the deck.
Hard to chose but I said bear concert was seeing John Mellencamp in the former Winnipeg arena back in the day. The place was just jumpin and I remember the drummer broke his drumstick but never missed a beat replacing it with a new one with slight of hand.
The days when you had to line up for hours to get tickets.
QD: Aretha Franklin over 20 years ago. Insane Energy, almost scary.
I have wide feet...always a problem getting good shoes. I love my Altra Lone Peak. Tried the TOPO MT-4 and I don't use them. I don't like em.
Question: I know you have too many shoes to test. Some of us want to get some extra miles out of our shoes. Have you ever replaced the insoles to get some more mileage?
QoD: 2016 - The Tragically Hip - Last Night in Toronto. Last tour they ever did. It was an evening of celebration, sadness, joy and gratitude.
Van Halen, in 1984 was so loud and exactly what I as a 16yo knew rock and roll was supposed to be. Next favorite was seeing Willie Nelson in 2012 with my then gf who is now my wife. Willie was one of the favorite musicians of my grandmother when she was alive.
The Who was doing
Their farewell tour. I wanted to go but didn’t have a ticket. I believe I was 16 at the time and decided to go wait in line. I ended up getting the last ticket sold and because of that the local radio station at the time rewarded me with front row tickets. I was so pumped and the concert was awesome but when I got out I didn’t have a ride home so I ended up walking home which was about 26 miles. Today I would not recommend any 16 year old girl doing this and it was certainly dangerous for the eighties but I was young and stupid. Anyhow that was my first unofficial marathon. I got home and my parents were mad but it was completely worth it. The concert was great and to have front row to the legendary Who was definitely a memorable.
4 words! Topo Athletic Cyclone 2. You gave the Kinvara 14 a score of 9/10. Using that as a benchmark, the Cyclone 2 deserves at least a 9.5. Same category type as the Kinvara, but the Cyclone 2 is lighter with a nitro infused peba midsole with the same supportive ortho sock liner as the Ultraventure 3. Make sure you size a half size down. Runs long. 1980 The Who. Camped out 2 nights and 3 days for front row seats. John Entwistle sees me and tosses his bass pick over to me. A jerk in the second row behind me dives over me and grabs it before I can catch it. I should have punched that jerk in the nose!
great review, and oh my goodness I love that clip of Mr Killian running up pikes!! What shoe do you think you'll race pikes in this year?!? Or maybe a few ideas you have!?!? I'm really like Normal Kjerag for that type of terrian right now. Hoping to race Pikes next summer (if my wife and I can finnaly sneak in a Honeymoon- newlywed life- I am sure you understand!!) cheeers my friend!!
QD: A few years ago I finally got to see my all time favorite band Metallica live in Albany. I have been a fan of their music since I was a young child. I know I missed out on their prime concert years in the 90’s but I was still happy to see them live in my mid 30’s nonetheless.

The Garden of the Gods shots were great to see. We were visiting Woodland Park and Manitou Springs last week. Barr Trail and Manitou Incline were a lot of fun. It was our first trip to Colorado and we’re planning a return trip next year. Any suggestions for what time of year to summit Pikes Peak on Barr Trail?
Best Concert was in 2017 on Bali when Ultra Beach Bali happened and Kygo played during sunset. Other thing: I’m looking forward to the new ASICS Magic Speed 3. Hopefully you will receive this shoe asap to test it. 👋 from Zermatt

A near perfect comp seems to be the hoka challenger being the lugs are very comparable as far as being not very aggressive and great for road to trail! Also the challenger fits more on the wider spectrum as far as hoka shoes go lol

I was interested in what you said about Altra and how a lot of long time users now dislike the shoes. I’ve been wearing thr trail shoes now for maybe eight year’s and I think I’ve bought my last pair as well. It’s kind of sad.
Another typical impartial review from Seth as usual excellent. My favourite concert of all time was Genesis at Twickenham England 2006 it was spell binding and an Evening i will never forget.

Please. Topo pronounced with long O sound. I assume you have not got the shoes wet in a creek crossing. Topo's Achillies heel is the orthosponge insole they use in most all their line.

I have to say I like the specs and have never tried toppo but that might be the ugliest 8 to ever make the display cases. Needs some spice! Not hating it, though, I would give it a try.
