Kathi T and Kayla, I totally agreee with both of you. Still hard to believe that Gary is gone. So good to see him happy and playing his guitar like no one else ever could. Gary was REO, I only listen to the lps/cds that he is playing on. Yes, REO died when Gary left. Wish he knew how much he was/is loved.
I am as happy as I can be to have been in my high school years when this music came about. Damn it those were great times. REO Speedwagon, Journey, 38 Special, Boston and others on the heels of Chicago and Led Zeppelin, damn what a time.
His drinking was getting out of hand and had been for some time. From what I have read he was becoming a bit too undependable and was showing up already half sloshed. They didn't want too but it was necessary to cut and replace him. The good news is that they are talking again and both Gary and Kevin would be open to do something together again if the other approached the subject. Stubborn pride on both sides. There is a vid on here where Gary returns and reunites with the guys for a couple of tunes. He looks like hell but he can still play the guitar like a mad man!
***** Couldn't agree more Scott. The guitar and Gary have a bond it seems. The good news is that he has done a few 'impromptu" gigs with the boys and all are open to working with each other again. Gary is beating his personal demons. I only hope that he keeps on the right track and stays clean and serene. I hate to imagine a world without Garys riffs.
Wow, Gary Richrath just up front by himself and nailing like A Boss right on national TV and making it look easy and fun. R.I.P to my Home Boy, no one could do it like him.
I saw REO numerous times at the late, great "Echodrome" (Brown County Area, Green Bay, WI) in the early to mid 70s. Gary had an unbridled joy of playing guitar. Seldom did he ever give less than 100% enthusiasm in those days. RIP Gary...thanks to you this song is part of the soundtrack of my life.
This song has always mesmerized me, whether at the gym or just cruising in my car. What a remarkable song. Love the piano all throughout the song, as well as the organ and guitar solos. Everything was so ingeniously devised and performed fabulously.
When this was on American Top 40, with Kasey Kassem, I was trying to remove the header bolts on a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 Cobra Jet R Code, to sap out engines. REO and I, got er' DONE!
ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK N ROLL SONGS EVER!!!!!!!!!! I saw REO recently at Freedom Hill, 8-11-2013, and I was lucky enough to be back stage and asked Kevin for a picture together and he was very accommodating. Thanks Kevin!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and they ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could not agree more with you, Michelle Rose....very well said....this is an amazing live performance by a band that I liked ok back in the day....but now realize how great they were and how polished they were live in this amazing video
He'll also extend a whole word just to make it fit with the lyrics. It's rudimentary, but it actually works with REO SW. I couldn't imagine REO SW without Kevin's vocalisms.
I cannot stop coming back to this vid...From Gary just wailing to the keyboard guy kicking ass...this makes music look like pure FUN....not many videos actually capture what ROCK is...this does...REO!!!
If you would have told me 20 years ago that this song would one day make me cry, I would have laughed in your face. Guess I've been rolling a long time now....RIP Gary.
This is far more than a great song. This is a masterful piece of phenomenal musicianship that reaches into the depths of ones heart, mind, body and soul.
Such a great show. Every Saturday at midnight. All the greatest bands live. No lip sync no bullshiit. Just real talent. These guys were phenomenal. Then MTV came out and turned everything to shit
I agree. Midnight special; every Friday night & a few other shows, but I've forgotten the names of them; my age I reckon. . Saw Steven Tyler/ Areosmith for the first time on there & was so mesmerized. I still am..Lol. Very long time ago. And...I'm late to this party. 😆 Cheers !
Okay, so I've watched this same video a dozen or so times........it just does NOT get old! These guys are so underrated....Gary is SUCH a great guitarist.......piano, organ, drums, vocals....just pristine!
Gary was, and always will be REO speedwagon, without him they are just another band to me.Often imitated, but never duplicated. I'm so glad I have three old vinyl records in great shape REO T.W.O., Lost In A Dream and Riding The Storm Out. I think the Righteous Brothers said it best, if there's a rock and roll heaven, then you know we've got a hell of a band. Gary sure could make that les Paul talk like no one else could in the manner that he did. Gary you did it man, even though you were in question of yourself. I hope he knows now how much people loved to hear him play!
Holy shit. I remember watching this when I was a teenager! I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV, mouth agape watching Gary. Such great musicians. RIP Gary.
I thought I had seen every old REO clip over the years.... damn this one brought me to tears. My God was GR underrated as a musician, songwriter and performer. What an absolute stud. RIP Gary.
Best of both worlds in one song!! Gary and Kevin both did top-notch creativity and craftmanship on this song. And this performance is so fun, I think it changed the lives of those girls in front of Gary. :-)
WOW!! I mean to say just Wow!!! I've been a fan of Reo Speedwagon as far back as 1971 listening to their tape with the song 157 Riverside Avenue while on station in the Gulf Tonkin. But this is so great...Just WoW
Those close ups of Kevin's eyes are amazing. I was in my 30's when they came out, but rock stations did not play their music. They were only heard on AM non-stereo radio stations. I was and still am a rock and roll woman, and I am glad I listened to AM once in awhile. I fell in love with them immediately. By the way, I am talking about the USA.
I am 60 years old now and i still listen to these guys from UA-cam and brings me back to my youthful days. i have downloaded their music and play it when i drive but this song is all my all time favourite. brightens and lifts up my day. cant help but move along with the songs. You guys are awesome. Listening to them in 2020 still. Roll with the changes, baby!!
That's a damned fine band doing a damned fine song with some REALLY damned fine guitar playing! Thank goodness for You Tube for allowing me to revisit some of these great bands of days gone by and being able to listen to and see them perform.
Awesome image of Gary following his bliss. Such a RIVETING performance that I keep revisiting to experience the positive vibes that still flow from these guitar riffs. He was a national treasure and we didn't even know it.I know that heaven is rocking harder because he's there.

Spot on review Michelle could not have said it better. These guys played at my late friends New Years Party and Wedding reception. Good dudes as well they like cigars dipped in Gran Marnier and a good round of golf as well!
YOU KNOW HOW GREAT A BAND IS WHEN THET CAN PLAY LIVE LIKE THIS !!! FANTASTIC MUSICIANS ON A TV SHOW THAT ALL PERFORMERS HAD TO PLAY LIVE , NO LIP-SYNC WHATSOEVER!!! TAKE THAT JAYZ AND BEYONCE AND MADONNA!
I don’t know how they can possibly be underrated. I grew up in their era and back then when Gary was with them, they were the best band and still one of the best bands I have ever heard. Also, April wine was excellent.
Gary's a good Scot. Used to watch the Midnight Special on Friday nites and Saturday Night Live Saturday nights...that pretty much was my weekend when I was a kid :) Not bad looking back at it 40 years later!
Most criminally underrated guitar player ever in rock music.
not just criminally underrated as a guitar player, he was also a great song writer (i.e golden country).
Robert bishop agreed!
Surely one of them
You got that shit right!

Hell yeah he does!

I'm right there with you! This is one of those songs that will always be extra fun to listen to.
The lead player is Claptonesque.
Pure talent . No new bands could do this in a million years.

One of my favorite guitar solos of all time. You were amazing, Gary! I hope you knew that, RIP

Gary Richrath (that phenomenal guitarist) passed today.

+zool ogist Yes, I'll... 'Keep The Fire Burning', too!
