I am truly amazed by this man. I have nothing of a singer, but I learned it in litteraly one hour. I am trying to learn extreme vocal technics for metal screaming and I have to learn Central Asia throat singing for it. This video and your explanations are truly amazing.
I definitely have had an easier time figuring out the kargyraa voice than the khoomei sound. I suspect having already learned false-cord death growl helped with that, the learning curve was more in getting false and true cords to start up at the same time instead of switching between one or the other. Khoomei's been giving me a lot more of a challenge to find how to produce the sound and be able to do it even semi-consistently.
Hey alex, the whisper action finally made me get a good kargyyra sound for the first time properly in years. The way i used to do it was the same action as clearing the throat but this version seems to be much better as i could feel the reverberation in my larynx in the false vocal folds. I want to say thank you wholeheartedly from Scotland, ive been a subscriber since i found your 7 styles of overtone singing video and i have been enamoured with overtone and throat singing since 14 (im 32 now!) big love
This is super helpful! I think you've done a good job at explaining this. And while I certainly don't feel that you should apologize for your last video, I agree that this one is better. Making UA-cam videos is a very difficult thing to nail down, so I hope you continue to make more. In my opinion, your expertise in throat singing overshadows any minor awkwardness in the videos.

Tenta projetar o som na sua garganta, é difícil de explicar, mas é como se você controlasse sua garganta fechando ela mas não totalmente. Sou ruim pra explicar mas tb to começando kkkk, seria legal se a gente de ajudar, você tem algum outro app que possamos conversar?
Incredibly helpful, thanks for this tutorial. I've managed to make and hold all the sounds but never nailed a base to start with, so they become rather unpredictable and hard to reproduce in the same way. With just a few minutes of the whisper base and the visuals of the teeth and tongue positions, I'm getting a lot more comfortable with it.

I think I've almost figured it out but the video only shows you making a low oooouuu sound but how about sounds like aaahhh, is that also khoomei or something else. When i do that i can get clearer overtones but my throat also rattles pretty badly. A video showing different tones you can make that we could copy would be useful.

I watch many, ,any music lessons here, this dude is best, ticks every box including some I didn't know existed lol, he has a deep spiritual calmness too, a kind of extra aspect that is hard to put your finger on, there are lots of elements, like sometimes the timing is off, too fast, too slow, the guy gets lost, hesitates, explains things badly etc etc, however, this is perfect.

Weird eh sometimes I sing to auto tune in a auto tune voice, generally it bugs me but I have a sort of way of emulating it, I still kind of hate it though, you can thank Cher for that lol, her producer thought she had gone mad, mutilating one of the most famous voices of the 20 century but, she knew something lol.

Hope everything's okay! I actually took a Udemy course on throat singing and I've been watching this video because I ended up learning Kargrya before Khoomei and Khoomei was harder to grasp. Did not expect this but I just learned to whistle the lip whistle style a little :o Never knew how to do that, instead, I always whistle using the tongue (up to the roof of the mouth).

And I cannot do the gutteral voice for long. IS it supposed to hurt a little bit at first? Like... should your voice be a little hoarse after doing this?

Yours are the best throat-singing tutorials I found so far on UA-cam! Thanks so much! Interesting that you mentioned you had Covid. I had the idea of learning throat singing (actually I wanted to learn it about 20 yrs ago but never got very far -- no YT-tutorials back then but there were books about it) when I had Corona and my voice got so low because of the cough. So I was lying in bed being ill and doing my first tries with throat singing.
This is one of the best vocal explanation coaching sessions that have ever been recorded. Much like overtone singing, ones who are listening clearly can hear the true lesson being shared. Many thanks - G.
I might not be doing it quite right, but it always feels raspy and hurts a bit when I try to do it this way. Is it because I end up focusing attention on the wrong part of the throat? Your videos are the best that I've come across so far, keep it up!
If you get hurt that means you're at the right path. Just don't proceed further when in pain. Wait for some hours or a day to resume. If you overdo it at a time, you may get vocal nodules.
I've spent the last two weeks learning and got to the point that I can do basic singing, but every time I need to tune in before in about to do it. Typically rewatching this video helps. How much does it take the body to learn it with no guides?
This may be an uncommon question but is it possible to throat sing with no teeth or dentures at all? Love your teaching style and was actually getting somewhere in the first lesson but it seems that lack of teeth limits one severely. @@Jorge78223 It does seem to matter if you look at diagrams of how you position your tongue and etc. Not saying it does, but it does seem to matter. When there are no teeth the air can't possibly move in the same way. Whether it ultimately matters, I don't know.
I learned jaw harp first and I feel like it helps a little bit with throat singing. But I feel like my ultimate challenge is lung capacity. I can't sustain a sound when throat singing for more than like 3 seconds.
It's something that cant just be learned in a few tries, it takes practice. Normal whistling is something you can do immediately but this takes a lot more control. However you never really even show us how well you can do this.

I am trying my absolute hardest to learn this, but I have a small mouth and small lips with a very tight/short tongue and very tight cheek muscles (worsened by sleep bruxism), making my mouth cavity quite small and giving me little to work with. When I help my cheeks to open and form a fuller "sound box" putting a finger in my mouth on each side, I can get a much clearer/louder sound. Any tips for folks like me?
You rock my friend! a-e-i-o-u....my neighbors may not agree....but I can make all the basic sounds from your first video after only a bit of practicing. Feel like I need to quit smoking if I'm going to get very far with throat singing though....Going to go for a nature walk later and really let loose and try out some of the stuff from this video...I doubt the birds will gather...but mainly so I don't end up evicted in the meantime. I think the first video was great too! I kinda jumped ahead and strained my glottis but that video taught me some safer techniques to build up to it. Been playing jaw harp for about 5 months and now I'm keen to learn some throat singing

I am at half of your video and the movement you made with your hand to show to open and close the throat made me think about a breathing technique we use during a yoga class that maybe could help you or others which is called "Ujjayi" in which you close your throat to make the exhalation much longer than normal.

About 4-12 months, it depends how pure you want the sound, how can align the most number of harmonics (throat, tongue, nose,ecc)

I am trying my absolute hardest to learn this, but I have a small mouth and small lips with a very tight/short tongue and very tight cheek muscles (worsened by sleep bruxism), making my mouth cavity quite small and giving me little to work with. When I help my cheeks to open and form a fuller "sound box" putting a finger in my mouth on each side, I can get a much clearer/louder sound. Any tips for folks like me?
You rock my friend! a-e-i-o-u....my neighbors may not agree....but I can make all the basic sounds from your first video after only a bit of practicing. Feel like I need to quit smoking if I'm going to get very far with throat singing though....Going to go for a nature walk later and really let loose and try out some of the stuff from this video...I doubt the birds will gather...but mainly so I don't end up evicted in the meantime. I think the first video was great too! I kinda jumped ahead and strained my glottis but that video taught me some safer techniques to build up to it. Been playing jaw harp for about 5 months and now I'm keen to learn some throat singing
@Alex Glenfield Hi, i started looking for Chakra Healings and John Goldman's theory about Music Therapy and i somehow ended up here. I am at half of your video and the movement you made with your hand to show to open and close the throat made me think about a breathing technique we use during a yoga class that maybe could help you or others which is called "Ujjayi" in which you close your throat to make the exhalation much longer than normal.
