Thank you, but there is one thing that could really make this video truly the best: a few point of view shots of packaged toys being opened. Or just a skinning of a throat to reveal a larynx.
As a singer (amateur), I've always been fascinated by throat singing but thought I'd never be able to do it without decades of formal training. With just this video, I was able to do it (badly) about the midpoint of the video! I heard the beginning of your next video and you were criticizing this video about how formal, and thus hard to watch, it was. Speaking for myself, I actually appreciate the formality and structure. I watched quite a few "learn throat singing in x minutes" and learned nothing from any of them, so thank you for the formal video because it put me on a path that I thought I'd never be on!
I learned throat singing by studying huun huur tu, I nailed down the three basic styles but now I'm playing around with it, learning how smart the soul is, I appreciate your video and reminding me to start with the basics, the reason I love throat singing so much is because its your own vibration, depending on what emotion you're holding is how your vibration will sound, I'm making music and I'll share it with you when I get my harmony together, I have much respect for you and your work, ANAMI BLESS YOU💖 -YE

I absolutely love your videos, they give me goosebumps by making me wonder at the beauty of our natural instrument and nature itself. They make me have deep conversations, it's hard to explain. Today I was attempting to sing overtones when I noticed this cat that was staring at me, almost as if entranced. I changed location, all the while still humming, and then again noticed it staring at me from behind a bush through leaves: maybe it just wanted food 🤷♂️
Great display of intent to teach and emotion from beginning to end. Thank you for taking countless hours to make this video for strangers to view. I watched all 37 minutes and 36 seconds and I enjoyed every second of every minute. I most appreciated it. Stay blessed and in harmony fellow man. 🙏🎶🎵👍
Discovered the soothing effect of humming and singing. It's just unbelievable. No surprise that all religions have some kind of sacred chant. I love you all
It's wonderful how relaxed your mind becomes when you let your voice do it's thing. How at start you try to make the overtones by consciously moving your mouth, but after short times of practice, I only imagine the sound and it is produced without any effort. It feels like your mind and body is finally at rest after a long day.
I was simple chasing rabbits through the internet when I discovered this video. I’m not a singer, or even a musician, but this is fascinating stuff. Thanks. 👍
This video is something beautiful. It's been a long time since I've been so enchanted by myself, thanks to your vision. You speak very beautifully about lack of meaning in words, we do not always need them to dispel doubts. I feel connected to my emotions after practicing for almost two hours. I'm glad I was able to let myself be guided by this particular video you created. Thank you!
I'm very glad to see a tutorial on this. I started overtone singing about 6 months ago, and I'm really enjoying it, but feel like my progress has stalled. I think I was getting too tense and impatient, so this has reminded me to be more mindful. Can't wait to practice! Thank you!

This is amazing! I watched the 7 styles video years ago. Decided to revisit it after watching lots of Khusugtun and saw you had another video out! This is an incredible lesson!
Thank you so much for this video ! While trying to go from "oo" to "ee", I noticed that the French "u" sound is right in the middle and the overtone became very loud! Impressive

I was fascinated by this last night and I tried following your advice this morning. I trained the I-U-OU-U-I the most because it felt like something was there and it developed into something bigger. Now it's 7pm and I can definitely hear some strong harmonics in the U vowel (I'm French, maybe that helped!) Thank you for this amazing video, it's so soothing and brings us back to the essentials :)

Prior to that, I hadn't seen any non-tuvan/western mongolian sing overtones that well. I was blown away by your 7 styles video. Thanks for putting this out, just started but already helping so much. Glad you caught it. I don't remember which one I used. Was is "Without change something sleeps inside of us and seldom awakens" or "It is by will alone that I set my mind in motion"?
Wow, nine minutes in I thought to try out singing "E." I think I throat sung, but I definitely heard my first little overtone! I was putting this on my bucket list, but now it's probably going to be one of my hobbies!
Alex this is a fantastic video, thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this. There is so much insight throughout. Your explanation of supported breathing from 28:27 is the best explanation I’ve seen anywhere and was hugely helpful for my technique.
By far the best tutorial on overtone singing! Will def contact you for a lesson once I have nailed down some basics. Right now I am beggining to hear the overtones slightly, when going from "ee" to "u". One thing I find difficult is to avoid singing nasaly, I have to constantly remind myself to focus on the throat.
Your videos were extremely helpful for my own journey with figuring out how to overtone sing. It was challenging at first to conceptualize how to produce the overtones but with practice I was able to figure out how it works. Thanks for sharing these excellent explanations 🤔💡
Really digging your videos. The Tuvan band, Alash, came to my town to play a concert and it inspired me to learn throat singing. If nothing else to use it when chanting. I really appreciate your method and spiritual approach.
Thank you for this video. Your view of the singing is really deep, and the way you explain it was touching. You also focus as much on music theory as how to feel the sound in the body and mind. I'm a throat singer since several years and I was recently training by myself at this kind of "back to basics" techniques, focusing on small details. You told me what I didn't know I needed. Thank you.

Hey Alex. I just really wanted to thank you for putting your efforts out in the world. I'm 25 now and I found your video when I was 16. You got me into something I've enjoyed so much over the years. It's by no means a passion, but definitely a joy and splendor. It ended up pointing me to look into not just singing, but the spiritual backing within many practices as well. Without that I would be someone very different, and I don't know how I would've gotten through so many things that happened growing up. I really appreciate it very much. Thank you.
I'm glad to know that singing has had such a special place in your life. It was sound and singing that prompted my interested in physics and metaphysics as well.
Interesting. Overtones have a higher scale than what is typically found upon an instrument. However, it does explain why I much prefer to play very deep tones on stringed, bowed, wind, and reed instruments. I find the overtones add a certain depth to the sound. I've found on the keyboards I have, typically the lower notes have a major third (or at least what I'm most sensitive to) on the lower tones, if stacked, create an augmented triad. Combined with the other overtones, they have quite a unique sound. I enjoy the overtones too as for me they create much more melodic scale than aolian and ionian. I honestly never thought I could sing because I was either singing in overtone series (not throat singing, but actual singing using the overtone scales in my singing voice), or I was singing in different modes altogether, long before I even knew they were a thing! I also had a very quiet singing voice, partly because of the shame I had over singing in different modes and scales which got me scolded several times, but also because I have a smaller lung capacity and had a respirator down my throat for several months as a premature infant which caused some scarring. Then I discovered some white handed gibbons at the local zoo. I started imitating their calls, and while learning to speak gibbon I found my singing voice as a more opera style of singing. I find that also uses some of the tongue, cheek and lip positions as throat singing. Then I found your videos!
Thanks Alex! You are a great vocal teacher and I enjoyed the lesson I had with you. Trying to "not suck" at improv has taken up quite a bit of my time the past couple of years but I hope to get to a point soon where I have the bandwidth to try to "not suck" at overtone singing too. Maybe someday Buffalo will have an overtone choir which would be cool! 😀
Always visit the uncomfortable areas that "suck". By visiting those places you'll get the results you want. Playing and practicing well is always for those who have the courage to suck, and relish it, dwell in the sucking spaces, and emerge with at the very least appreciation for the ugly beauty of those spaces, which will disappear the longer we linger within them.
Hei Alex, thank you so much for this. I am a singer, violinist, composer (and teacher as well) from northern Norway. I have been practising throatsinging for a while now, but I wish I would have found your tutorial a lot sooner... Your video about overtone throatsinging is definitely the best and clear video about this subject out there. I could do it straight after your exercises, tusen tusen hjertelig takk! :D
May I ask Luira, does the violin give your soul the same feeling as singing? I am not good with violin, but when I play, it releases same things in me as singing. Greetings from Finland ❤️
Can definitely feel HOW MUCH time you spend analyzing countless for things, and experienced... Thanks a lot for this incredible amount of experience, knowledge.... :) Best Gratitude! : )))
Ok so...I came upon this video looking for ways to develop some intentional raspiness in my voice to be able to sing some parts with more "emotional" touches. Had already been talked about the fake vocal folds being essential to achieve "screams" that won't strain or damage our real vocal folds etc etc etc....then somehow I bump into this and ended up watching the whole thing, the WHOLE 37:35 mins video, as I found myself more and more deep into the whole practice of overtones.... What kind of sorcery is this??! Loved it from minute one. Such a clear way to explain and show... and by far, the best explanation I've seen of proper breathing that I've found on youtube. Now I want to know it all!

Then I found your videos!
this is insanely helpful
Best Gratitude!
Beto Osé did you figure out the rasp technique? Have any recommendations?
@@davidleeking4526 do you know this guy's channel? I think that's the first video I found if him and it helped me a lot to get on the right path. Check him out!

I love your stuff! just noticing how much your voice and delivery minds me of Jeff Goldblum! That's a good thing :)
First time I've received a Jeff Goldblum comparison, and I cherish it. I love that guy. You should see him in The Tall Guy, and Lush Life, a jazz movie, where he plays a jazz saxophonist alongside Forest Whitaker, his trumpet playing friend who discovers he has a brain tumor.
Dude that's so crazy how shrugging increases the space for air!!!
you are the real voice of God!
keep this up please! Subbed
Love it Alex. Fantastic work

Really helpful. Thanks so much Alex!
Nice Dune reference. I can do the basics, I just need to practice. Just like anything. Thanks, Doc.
