  • How to Replace a Lamp Socket Easy or this is also how to rewire a lamp. In this video we will show you steps to replace a lamp socket. When replacing a lamp socket make sure to connect the hot wire to the brass screw terminal and the neutral wire to the silver screw terminal. If you are replacing the light socket mark or tag the wirees before removing the socket so that you know which wire goes to which screw in the new socket. If you for then you will notice that one of the wire has a smooth insulation and the other wire has a ribbed insulation. The hot wire is the one with the smooth insulation, and the neutral wire is the one with the ribbed insulation.
    Remember safety first! Be sure to shut off the power before doing any electrical work. If you're ever unsure about wiring a device, please consult an electrician.

    Harki, I find the UK ones are more easier to wire than the US ones. a pretty good and easy job though 👍

      Yeah they can make this a lot easier for lamp sockets. The lamp socket in the US has not really evolved much …lol

    Fine if you and your lamp are in the United States. butr not suitable for elsewhere.
    The same goes for new lampshades. I wished to buy three new shades for table lamps. I was unable to determine from the illustrations just how the shade was suppotrterd from the ,lam holder, so I did not buy.

    what if both wires are copper colored? how can I tell between hot and neutral? The original socket is old and was not clear which wire was which

      @LonghornWorkshop  2 місяці тому +1

      @@DonaRodgers feel both the wires, one will have a smooth casing and the other will be ribbed, meaning it will not be smooth.
      The Hot side of the insulating cover is smooth and the Neutral is ribbed. That’s usually how I can tell but please do not take my word for it I am not a professional electrician. Should consult an electrician if not sure.

    It is funny how many things are standardized that you don't realise!

      You are absolutely correct on that. It actually is amazing what things are standardized that you you didn’t even know.

    Stumbled on your site after loading my amazon cart with a new lamp, so ordered parts you suggested instead and gave it a go. Even though our socket was a different type (no exposed screws), we were able to manage with your video assistance. Thank you so much for patiently explaining what to do. We will certainly be exploring your other content. Well done, Sir!

    Did I see 250V on the interior of the replacement socket? Have you Texans seceded from the US Grid? I like your close-up shots mate; I wish I could get my camera to behave as nicely! Cheers Harki.

    Which wire is wh8ch?

    • @LonghornWorkshop
      @LonghornWorkshop  6 місяців тому +2

      If you are replacing then you can tag them before taking off the wires. The screws have different colors.
      Or you will notice if you feel the wires that one of them is rubbed and the other is smooth. The smooth wire is hot and the ribbed is neutral. Best to google it based on the wires you have.
