    Yes, most of the artists here in UA-cam say that never use black and they said it so confidently. But I am inclined to believe you. You make sense to me. I think every artist if they want to pursue art as truly a work of excellence, should take you seriously. Thank you much, I am learning so many things from you.

    Ah, thank you soooo much Dianne and your cameraman. I am able to see clearly both the pallet mixes and the colour on the canvas. AND I'm delighted that you have cleared up yet another of those conundrums i.e the use of black. I'm off now to bur myself a tube. Again, thank you so much.

    very interessting ...
    I´ve get the prettiest spring green as I was adding ivory black to a neutral bright permanent yellow.
    I was painting a black raven in midden of lind-green leaves only with these two colors yellow and black - without any other green or greenish color :) I like the idea of a limited palette and to learn artful painting like the old masters with only few colors. I´m searching other also very useful color combinations for me.
    to use very contrasting colors on the color wheel is also a good way, because they neutralize each other at a point and you can get greyish, brownish or your own mixed black on this way.
    I don´t think that I must collect each color that I want or need if I know how to mix the few colors that I own in any direction.

      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  Рік тому

      The important thing is to know what color does to color, then you can mix whatever color you want.

      Sherry Gregory Haney hi, the palette Dianne has is called the Sienna Pochade box...it's wonderful...I have the same setup before I found Diannes videos...however, I never thought to leave the oils out...I do now and she was so kind to make a few vids on how she stores the oils..her color palette...and cleaning...this box comes in a LG and Med. size...I have the LG. Its very strong and really nice wood...I carry anywhere I go...sit in car if weather is bad...on lap if I want to just do studies on sofa and such...and the setup like Dianne when painting ..there is a shop in California online the Madison Art ...they sell this box and have the best price...hope this helps

      Awesome. I'll check her website for those videos. I have a wonderful studio easel, but looking to doing more plein air and that's what her's is designed for I think. Thanks!!!

      Sherry, I'll put a tour of my easel setup and palette in on the Quick Tip schedule. It is a Sienna Pochade. Over the years, I tried many, but have found this one to be the sturdiest of any.

    • @gigiscottos
      @gigiscottos 7 років тому +1

      Sherry Gregory Haney hi...yes I have two very nice studio easels...the Sienna box is wonderful...I use it to have my palette of colors ready to go...like Dianne has her setup...also it's mobile...you can sit at any table and use it...it's like having a laptop...lol
      I don't use solvents ...this is a plus...so with the box I can use it in any room...and when weather is bad...sit in car and paint...the only thing is the glass palette...it's hard to get out...you can see Dianne has cut a small round end to easily pick it up...I think she may even have a self made fiber glass or acrylic palette to replace the glass...when I saw hers I had the hardware store cut a piece of acrylic plastic to fit along with the hole to pick it up...like Dianne has. I use the glass part for studio easel painting on the table...its very sturdy plein air...having the right tripod of course...enjoy..

    Thank you for you simple explanations to sometimes complicated issues. I'd like to know....what brand of "Black" did you use?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  7 років тому +1

      Connie, as long as it's Ivory Black, the brand hardly matters. Because I favor Gamblin, Utrecht, Rembrandt and Daniel Smith brands of oil paints, most often I'll have a tube of black thrown into an order of any of them.

    Can I ask what brand of Alizarin you have...oh its beautiful. Thanks so much for this video...very helpful. I hope many beginners watch this...and the many UA-camrs that use black to darken the colors...oh its terrible. ..painting looks so muddy and dark...it's in every color throughout the painting. Luv your viridian thank you for telling us what brands you prefer.

      I use Utrecht Alizarin Crimson Permanent. The traditional alizarin is beautiful, but slightly unstable. The new formulas are light fast and more trustworthy.

    It is interesting how some artists just refuse to add black to their palettes. I rarely use it myself but I do have a tube and have used it for a totally black background. Thank you for your tidbits. Quick question for you.. I am new to viewing your lovely video's and assume you are working with traditional oils. Have you ever tried the water miscable/mixable? I've seen it referred as both water miscable oils and water mixable oils which is why I put them both here. I wondered what your thoughts were on the quality of them compared to traditional oils. I've not tried any type of oil paints. Only watercolor and acrylics.Thanks in advance, Jeanine

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  7 років тому

      Welcome aboard, Jeanine. To answer your question, I do use traditional oils. Along the way, some of my students with sensitivities to oil solvents have used the water mixable oils and have found the satisfactory. To me, though, they seem a bit flat, but that might be my prejudice because I do love the smell of oil paint. (Note: The words miscable and mixable are simple choice of nomenclature.)

    Great lesson, can you do video on "neutralize" colors?

    • @veaudor
      @veaudor 7 років тому

      Just use complementary colors, imho.

    • @celticqaidbear
      @celticqaidbear 7 років тому

      veaudor I know that , I was asking if there is another way ie. grays paint tones.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  7 років тому +1

      Celtic Bear, Using complements with white is the most adroit way to mix gray tones because by doing so you can control the temperature as well as the amount of hue you allow to be saturated within the neutral. I will put a Quick Tip about that on our schedule.

    Hi Dianne. Which black is best? Carbon black or Ivory black?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 років тому

      It doesn't matter a whole lot. I've always used Ivory Black. You'll find that the major difference between blacks is their temperature.

    • @lisafred1362
      @lisafred1362 4 роки тому +1

      Now I am confused. If I can mix blue with yellow (compliments), do I get the SAME EXACT olive green as yellow and black? Does black mix a different green? Why would you reach for black if you have a compliment or maybe black a time saver so you don't have to mix compliments?

  • @jamesoliver505

    I have never had black change my colors. If you don't use black how do you darken a color???? I have tried to paint with out black but and have a terrible time, then I add black and painting becomes easy and looks fine. I believe adding white to a dark color muddies it up. SO I thought you were going to tell us how to darken a color without black but no one ever tells how. It has been a big problem with me for years. What is the answer.? Compliments change the hue when I use them to darken and the painting becomes dirty looking. Not to mention if you mix up a color its impossible to find the right compliment. Anyone have an answer to this?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  7 років тому

      James, perhaps Lesson 2 of my tutorial series on Reading and Mixing Color might help you. In short, every tube color has an inherent value. First, learn to read the color. Refer to Quick Tip #5. To darken a color, use a version akin to its hue. For example, to darken cadmium yellow light, use yellow ochre and to darken cadmium red light, use alizarin crimson. I also recommend you watch Quick Tips 66, 67, 103, 127 and 130. I hope this helps.

    • @richiejourney1840
      @richiejourney1840 6 років тому

      James Oliver You are correct about the problem of “compliments” changing the hue in as neutral a way as possible like a more neutral black. The ‘true” direct compliment pigments are often further away then one thinks going by the “visual” compliment scheme. Go to handprint.com if you want to know about the pigments and how they actually interact with each other. Now black pigments are also biased (mostly blue) and it is a good idea to have as much of a neutral black as possible when one is worried about hue shift. Gamblin makes a good chromatic neutral black and Williamsburg makes great neutral grey’s.
      I am amazed that the “Impressionists” & “Colorists” school of thought is to avoid black and wont have it on the palette yet strive to mix them and use them! Go figure!

      Start by doing sketches to find a good design. Then do two or three notan sketches to find the areas in shadow and not in shadow. (Here's a little lesson on how to do a notan: diannemize.com/a-free-lesson-how-to-do-notan-based-on-shadow/) Then, decide on a limited palette. Begin by blocking in the shadow areas, then those not in shadow and from there, let the painting guide you. And make it fun.
