- In this video I tested the ABBREE 138-520MHz "tactical antenna" in its 108cm long version.
This antenna is made of something like metal measuring tape. Although quite long, it is sturdy and quick to deploy.
But, how will it perform?
Dave, I am 66 years old and have been a commercial 2-way radio technician almost my entire life. This is one of the most professional analysis of this antenna that I have ever seen. Good job! I congratulate you on choosing a Rohde and Schwartz analyzer. One of the best that there is. You live in a very beautiful place; I am so jealous
Agreed and subscribed!
Very interesting. The most professional test I've seen for this antenna. Congratulations. 73 DE HB9GXP
I agree 100%. Thanks!
So who give this video a thumbs down?? Maybe the mfg.
Would love to see you test the other three Abbree antennas to see which is the best length.
Thank you for not showing the test on each antenna, just the results.
Great video!
" Mine is the longest one" lol. Hey you said it not me. Great video.
Happy to see more of it. This is e very good and interesting setup to test antennas. Keep on please!
Excellent video, this is the first technical test including a field test i have seen for handheld antennas .Look forward to more of your videos. Thank you
Thank you Dave. That was very well done, and informative. I have thought of buying one of these, and you've been most helpful.
Best antenna review I’ve seen in a while.
I’m so jealous of your view!
Came to see the antenna in action and I really like your neighborhood. Its beautiful!
Interesting and very professionnal protocol of test!
I have just seen the video, clear and professional as always, great job Davide
Just now finding your video but I just wanted to say bravo on a good thorough test.
This is my second video from you I have viewed. I'm impressed with your presentation and easy you explain things in them. I'm following you and hope we hear and see more from you..73s
Thank you for spending the time. Very useful
Thank you for this really interesting test done in a professional way.
Can't say enough good things about this video. Keep up the good work!
Great job Dave !
Very well put together video!
I really enjoyed this simple and straightforward test. I feel like other reviews have a little less science. My personal tests of this antenna have no science involved, but sheer awe at how and where I could make contact.
Likewise. I’m very impressed with its range.
Thanks for such a thorough test 👍🏻
New Ham here. Glad to find your channel. Thanks for the review of this product at this size, 108cm.
Outstanding analysis!
Excellent video, good test gear!
Thanks for sharing. I enjoy living on the edge of town here in Oklahoma, United States, but where you are looks amazing.
Finalmente un Italiano che fa cose radioamatoriali interessanti su UA-cam. Ottimo lavoro continua così
I was about to buy the ABBREE Tactical antenna but I changed my mind after watching your video. Because the antenna performs bad in the frequencies that I was planning it for. Thanks for your test. 73.
Good job , super profesional your demostrations .Congratulations!!!
Very well done, thank you!
Very informative. Great video!
Great video and info.
I found the video informative so I have subscribed, thank you
I want to move to your country! Beautiful! Awesome video! Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
Great review, thank you very much.
Hello! Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative tests!
Great video, nice test setup..
Man that was a great video
Interesting test, and thank you for your hard work. I use the Abbree 18.8 inch antenna on my TYT UV8000E HT. on 146.775 I have a SWR of 1.17, on 446.300, I have a SWR of 1.08, that reading made me test it three times to make sure, and I did use a digital SWR meter. So I think the shorter version might be better.
Very helpful, thank you.
Thank's. Impressive review
Finally, 220MHz/1.25 meters will get some love! The perfect band if you need one band for rural and metro areas.
Perfect if you don’t wanna have anyone to talk to as well.
thank you! you are the most scientific approach to this!
A+++++
Great test! Thanks. I got the Abree, middle version. Swr when folded is horrible though
Very Nice test.
I have seen some other real world tests up to 9 miles simplex and the most efficient one the tester found was the 28.5" length Abbree. The 42 " only barely edged it out on 2 meter, but actually had lower Smeter readings than almost all the other 28.5" readings. As with anything there is a sweet spot for antenna length especially on a HT
Tanks Dave, yes, it's interesting.
Keep going . Ciao
Thank you! You made a good job. Very usefull video. Will be waiting for a new videos. 73!
Wow.. Awesome video. Pro level. Thank you so much.
outstanding! Many thanks!
IZ2UUF - I use a Radio Shack brand Telescoping center loaded HAM antenna, it’s just 6” closed , good for Public Safety and up to 26” fully open for HF and CB operation, you can transmit up to 5 watts with it, it’s fully Tuneable by opening or closing the Telescoping sections and its center loaded so NO ground plane is needed. This is an excellent antenna for HT for QRP low power operation. I can even attach a roll up antenna when Fully Extended for HF receive.
Nice scientific experiment. Thanks
very interesting video. thanks
Thanks for your review! You are right, signal band antennas do work better in most cases. :-)
ka9radio - the OLD Radio Shack Telescoping center load HAM antenna is a better performer, it’s fully tunable and Telescoping from 6” to 26” with a center load. It’s full 5w rated and performs great at 6” for Public Safety and 26” for HF or CB Reception.
Very nice video, Dave. Since I have looked inside of an nearly identical antenna I will say that the metal radiator is a wide copper tape, and the snapping aspect that seems like a measuring tape comes from the outer plastic sleeve. Since the antenna seems to be at its best at a little lower frequency than the 144-148 Amateur band it seems that it could easily be shortened. Just remove the plastic cap and cut off a bit and replace the cap.
Also, since the copper tape is 100 times wider than it is thick, there is probably a bandwidth advantage to having the wide side facing the 'target.'
Thanks for the professional treatment!

I have the Abbree 18.8 inch antenna on my TYT UV8000E 10 watt handheld. I use a frequency of 146.775 a great deal, since it is a local repeater near my house. I checked the SWR's on said frequency and got 1.03 and a power output of 9.97 watts. I did some research and found out the Abbree antenna is tuned so you will get the lowest SWR's at 146.000. And they use shrink fit tubing to cover the two tape measure pieces. So if your cover gets wrinkles, just use a hair drier/blow drier set to high, and you will smooth things out nicely.
Very informative thanks and 73's from W5DPV
Perfect.
Excellent! Ciao from America! (My parents are from Isernia)
Good video. Thank you.
Very well done! I have the 42” and it does not work as well. I appreciate your time to throw all those on the meter to gather the data. 73 W7ESR
I've heard there are a lot of fakes... Apparently the fakes don't have a real loading coil. I have just got mine and now need to test to see if I have a good one or not...
bravissimo
Very interesting test! It would be nice to have a link to the actual antenna you purchased. I assume your is original but I have seen that there are some fake versions on sale and that they have basically nothing inside the matching part. I curious how easy it would be to make a matching coil for UHF?
Also perhaps one of the others is much better on UHF.
In any case I really like the concise, structure and scientific approach great job!
Thank you for the information, KC3DSF, 73.
73 thank you very much for the video.
Grazie mille Dave per il video. Ho una marca Abbree della stessa antenna e funziona in modo eccellente in VHF e bene in UHF quando l'antenna è piegata a metà. Ciao, 73 KJ7YSW
Cheers buddy.. Great video! I wonder what the results would be when the abree is folded? Perhaps better on the 70cm band? 🤷🏻♂️
Bello, come avere i risultati di camere elettromagneticamente anecoiche con strumentazione "alla portata" (€) di tutti! Grazie di aver fatto il video!
Thank you very much for the very effective test.
I was wondering if one of the slightly shorter ABBREE antennas would do better on UHF (isn't there one whose length is about 70 cm?)
This is a great video.
I have the smallest, 13 inch. It works really well on UHF.
Keep it folded for that.
Excellent work, I did wonder how those monstrously long antennas would fare on UHF.
I wonder if they are too prone to damage these mostly plastic rigs we have today, as you say they make a fine lever.
Looks like a beautiful place where you live, but for radio.....a nightmare i bet, even cell phone reception must be very patchy?
Very good and professional test! What would you say is the best mobile antenna for 446 MHz (PMR)? And is there a good directional antenna for this frequency which can be easily mounted on a hand held device?
The best directional antenna is the one you make yourself.
What do you think I should buy Nagoya na 771 or abbree "tactical antenna"
Merci !!!...
Do you have a video of the performance of different Abbree tactical antenna lengths?
Hi David, I have just got mine today and re-watched your video. I wonder how it works on UHF if kept wrapped up? Have you tried checking that on the VNA to see if it would work? I'm still waiting to get a NanoVNA so I can test myself. Lastly mine came with a bendy extension thing but I didn't attach that - seems to make it approx 10cm longer. Thanks for the video it was very nice to see the scientific approach! 73 de HA5RV
I just ordered the one with the bendy attachment a few minutes ago. Do you think the bending piece is rigid enough to use? Or will the weight of the antenna make it flop?
Great job thanks from kb2uew
Wonder if it can be shortened/tuned for better UHF results
i got one and if you use it on UHF fold it once this will help it a little + .5 dBd better
Very interesting test. I wonder what made 10 cm longer Abbree perform so much better than a dipole. 3.4 dBd is doubling the power. Sounds a bit too good to be true, doens't it?
whether a tactical antenna can work at 136-520mhz
The first one 42" I bought did not work. The shorter one I bought transmits great but does not receive as good as my stock antenna...???? Can you have both?
Beautiful town!
Can You Ranking Antenna Band For HAM Radio 144-147 Mhz. ( Handy type )
Still torn apart if i should go for the abbree 108cm or 72cm?
Hi, can you test the Abbree AR-152A (108cm) on 149MHz? What is the VSWR? :) I need help ;)
are there any fake ones? i got one and dont really see the difference over the stock one and i dont have any swr meter to check it.
my 108cm antena camed in green package looks very well it simply seems oryginal
HELP I GOT 2 ANTENNAS Which is best for reccieving! I don’t care bout transmit since I just listen lol. I have NA771 OR NA773 OR THIS ONE IN VIDEO!? Thnaks
thank you for the test. it was verry interesting. 73 de dc3lc
Hello Can u Review what Brand Of Antenna can use For long Distance transmission And Receiving At My RADIO BRAND ( BOA FENG S 5 ) DUAL BAND TQ
I saw a test were it worked better on UHF when it was folded.
Какая дистанция с ней?больше,на сколько?
Can you test it folded on 70cm?
I've seen in another video that it performed better while folded on UHF
Hello Harry. I did not publish any test with the antenna folded because on the initial measurement, folding the antenna raised its SWR to very high values in both bands and I assumed it wasn't designed to be used folded.
@@Iz2uufNet But it still interesting :)
how about folded? folded 2/3 and 1/3?
Very good. PP5EJD here
Would you use that antenna for a handheld cb radio?
No, I would no. A CB radio works at 27MHz which is very far from the frequency these antennas are designed for.
Subscribed. Swiss Italian?
Fold the abbree so it's double at uhf, then it works well
Complimenti.Un inglese che pure io ho capito.'73 de IK1CFJ
i think you should have tested it while folded that may be better on the higher band
so abbree v-u is not good?
