  • Testing the Abbree foldable 42.5" HT antenna on the farthest UHF repeater I can hit. Keep in mind, it is tuned better on VHF then on UHF but I still managed to make a contact.

      I'm getting 28 miles from my location in Central NY with lots of hills and what not to a repeater that is on lower ground than me. It is a DMR repeater though and I find DMR/Digital is sort of like SSB vs FM. Much more punch.

    Hi Eric,
    I got mine (42") a little over a week ago; works great!
    I can hit my club's repeater 65 miles away with full quieting from inside my home. I can do the same with my older Cushcraft AR-270B, which is 7 feet long.

      I am new to all this and i was wondering what the utility of this is ? Does it increase range for two way communication (something im looking for) and would both radios need one installed ?
      Also how short is it folded ?

    • @jptucsonaz8503
      @jptucsonaz8503 4 роки тому

      @@ThatGuy-sc5rx - it absolutely increases range in comparison to a stock antenna or even over a really good third party ant. Like a Nagoya which I almost always use.
      It is most useful if you have a marginal signal if you are out in the boonies! As I am in Arizona, that happens a lot as I travel.

    Local friend and I have these antennas and are still experimenting on simplex. We can make good comms from home to home on simplex and they are fantastic receive antennas. So far we have proven to ourselves their value on UV-5Rs and Hammo-Cans on 2 m simplex. That's our tasking for them. I believe I need to order a spare!

    I guess I take for granted my geography with so many repeaters on hills and mountain peaks. Using repeaters 30-40 miles from my home on a HT is a regular occurrence. With a modest dipole in my front room, I can hit 50 miles no problem. I've even done 50 miles on low power UHF using a rectangular loop antenna ( also mounted inside my front room ).

    I see the abree great for backpack APRS HT with mobilinkd. Very portable and great range. But could be difficult to transport when mobile and deployed (trees, brush, etc) also I wonder how it performs against a tuned antenna for APRS in this use case.
    For voice work I think the roll up j pole would be better. Can get more height, smaller overall package, and easy to deploy. Drawback is once deployed you are not mobile.

    Not knocking the Abbree antenna but I have an alternative idea which is a "J-pole roll-up antenna" which I highly recommend. [if you do an internet search for that phrase you'll find the product.] I know of two people who sell them over the internet. I use my dual band to reliably contact a repeater 31 miles away from me in So. Calif. What's nice about these things are very light weight but they can literally be coiled up to fit inside a sandwich size plastic bag. Excellent for go bags or home station use.

I guess we can test but they don't have the license yet... I got this for SHTF... I do have a base unit YASUE but need an antenna and get it going... Plus I need to learn more. I've had my tech/operator license for many years but previously used it only with a State Guard in a limited capacity for training and deployments. There are repeaters around and I think the nearest is closer than 30 miles... and that should allow me to speak to my other son and dil who are down in Del Rio (he's an AF pilot). I'm guessing the answer is yes - as distance is distance... but just wanted to be sure.

    I have trouble with every dual band base antenna I have ever owned. Either VHF SWR is good and UHF is high or opposite. I haven't used many HT after markets. I did get an 8 inch tri-band 144/220/440 fir a Hessenate tri-band that doesn't work on any band. As soon as I switch to that antenna, I can hear the RX lose out some right away. TX only works for a couple miles from the repeater. The antenna I bought has a step down diameter about 1/3 to 1/2 way up the antenna. Some of you guys may know which one I'm referring too. Any one else get high SWR on dual band antennas? I had a GP9 the same thing, high on one fair on the other. 1.5 VHF 5 or higher on UHF.

      5/8 wave at two meters does need a ground plane or the radiation angle goes above the horizontal. On 440 its starting to act like an end fed longwire and you want to point the tip at the repeater. That said, its better than a rubberducky where half the power is going into your brain and the gain is way below a dipole. As VHF-UHF is about antenna height and line of sight, used with a lightweight mast or clamp and say 20 feet or so of 8X coax would make a nice portable range extender. Also, if you move and the signal goes in and out (mobile its called picket fence) you have a multipath problem you need to go up or sideways to get a better signal. If you can't do either, using a yagi and pointing it to the strongest signal can be a solution.

    Cool video! I have the 18.5 inch version and have hit repeaters 70 miles away on my HT so it depends on your terrain and what equipment the repeater has. I'll have to check mine out on the MFJ and see what it shows. 73 WG5EEK
