It was genius having her as Zelda's Mother and she nailed it. Watch Vicki in Carol's All Star Party in 1984 I believe do Carol's Dulles song. She nailed that too. Every inflection and look. Vicki is awesome.

One of the sketches explains it, but I don't remember which episode it was in.
In the very first sketch from 1969 George wakes up with a hangover after a night out with the guys. Zelda comes out of the other room and he finds out he is married to her when she starts waving around a marriage license.

Carol seems to have drawn a little inspiration for her performance here from Lily Tomlin's telephone operator character.
No, actually it was Shelly Winters' character in 'A Place In the Sun' I had a feeling and she confirmed it in an interview. They did a takeoff on the show and she and Harvey got such a kick they decided to do George with Zelda as a running sketch. I wanted Monty's character George to murder her in the movie for exactly that whiny, God awful voice SW came up with. Carol nailed it.

No, Carol is doing her version of Shelly Winters' annoying character in A Place In the Sun. Monty's character was George. They did a takeoff of that movie and she and Harvey found it amusing hence Zelda and George was created.
