  • In the Indiana Fever’s last game against Seattle, Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston combined for 17 assists! Although Kelsey Mitchell and Lexi Hull were responsible for the win, if it wasn’t for Caitlin and Aliyah, Kelsey and Lexi wouldn’t have been as successful.
    How did Aliyah Boston become such an amazing playmaker?

    I believe that the rest of the team is starting to pass the ball because they see CC not being selfish for points. She passes, they score. They begin to see that and believe that they can pass and others score. As the Fever become a team rather than 5 players, we are seeing what passing and assists can do. TRANSITION! That will be a key to their success.

      It's no surprise to Iowa fans. She's been doing it for years. It's likely that many very good players played their whole career focussing on what they could achieve, and never got much recognition. Caitlin focusses on what the team can achieve - and in the process became a phenomenal player. I love Hannah Stuelke - I have the 'Alright, stop! Hannah time' t-shirt from Raygun - but I don't see her getting 47 points in the game against Penn State unless i) Caitlin had built her into and outstanding player over 2 seasons by giving her assists from the Magician's Cabinet, and ii) Caitlin didn't realise what's on and give Hannah all the help possible to get a record. Do you think AB would have been top 3 if not for being a teammate of CC? Kate Martin, CC's Iowa teammate, was #12. 17 Nalyssa Smith, 18 Kelsey Mitchell, 27 Temi Fagbeni, 29 Katie Lou Samuelson. This kind of popular support also helps players get endorsements, not to mention CC has the best endorsement connections in the league. And the Indiana training facilities are still basically brand new, top of the line, easy commute, relatively low cost of living. Plus central location for travel and Indiana gets the best private jets in the league, because CC gets them. And, of course, the Fever will now be a perennial playoff team with good chances to progress and even win it all and that's also bonus money free agents can benefit from. Overall, if I was a free agent being offered a max contract by multiple teams, and wanted to find the place where I'd help my career the most, I'd go the team CC is on, where I'd get wide open looks all day, become massively more popular, and would have the best chance to grow my endorsement revenues. In fact, I'd be fighting for that spot. And I think the free agents will be. I'd even play for the league minimum because I'd make it back easily in promotions and endorsements. I think the Fever will have to beat them off with a stick.

      @JE-IC 13 днів тому

      @@snave59 yes, free agency can throw a wrench in things for a team. As Kelsey said, she'll have to make the best choice for herself, personally. We all know teams aren't really loyal to their players - trades can pull the rug out from under a player. I support Kelsey, whatever decision she decides to make.
      Players reaching free agency have a lot of things to consider - pay, the team's ability to take them into championships, support from fans (jersey sales, butts in seats, community appearances), whether games are televised, whether they like the coach, how they feel about teammates, what city they want to live in for personal reasons, etc.

    Yes, CC did that to AB, before, scouting report is all around CC, Storm made two scouting report because of CC and AB chemistry but CC knows the opposing teams will catch up so the Fever made a play Iowa style. Iowa has shooters like Marshal, Martin and Faulter so opposing college teams can't afford to blitz CC. In the upcoming Fever games we will see the Iowa CC who's dropping bombs anywhere beyond the arc because opposing teams can't gamble blitzing CC because Hull and Mitchell will drop bombs beyond the arc uncontested, may add Samuelson as well, it's Iowa Hawkeyes all over again

Last year, they went from five wins to 13 wins, so eight more than the previous year without her. But on a very bad team, nobody notices. Now that she is on a good team, more people can see her play. I do agree that Boston and Clark pair well together and both of them make the other better. I would like to see more sturdy Boston picks at the top of the circle when the offense is developing. Then roll to the basket for two.

    • @NADRIPmusic
      @NADRIPmusic 20 днів тому +4

      You are correct. I'd argue that AB has improved her defense noticeably, but that's an improvement not something dramatically different than her ability she showed last season. And AB has largely maintained her stats despite being asked to take a lot more shots from range than she did last season. There has been about a 5% drop in her FG%, but it's still over 50% and, again, she's shooting a lot more shots from greater range.
      AB came up in a system that fed the bigs in the low post and that's mostly what she knew coming into this season. So, it's not she had no idea what pick and roll was, it's just that it was more a change-of-pace play she occasionally ran in the past not something she ever perfected. That's why her picks look like they're from someone just now trying to master the pick and roll, because that's the truth.
      It's hard to give enough credit to AB and her ability and basketball IQ that she has completely reinvented the way she plays the game to maximize what CC can do for the Fever offense. A more stubborn player than AB could easily have caused a lot of problems, insisting that CC should mold her game to what AB was familiar with, point guards who primarily work the ball to bigs in the low post, then the bigs go to work and either score or kick out to an open perimeter player. That's what the Fever ran most of last season. That's what most teams in the WNBA run most of the time. That's what most big college programs run for women's basketball. And it's what AB did all through college and even last year in the WNBA. Yet, AB wasn't that person. She saw the benefit of adapting to what CC was doing, even though it is always hard to go back and learn how to play offense from scratch when you're already an elite offensive player in the offense you know, AB has done that, and now because of that, she's all the better. She is learning all kinds of new opportunities she finds in the pick and roll, and if she does get the ball in the low post, she's just as good there as she ever was. All this is making her a much more adaptable player, who can be a threat in all kinds of ways, and, now, a natural outgrowth of that (that I'm sure was also encouraged by the training camp the Fever ran over the break) is her setting a career high in assists last game. Because passing is also an option in the pick and roll, and she's getting opportunities to pass that are a lot greater than what she used to get in the low post game. Her attitude, hard work and basketball IQ have me believing AB will be one of the all-time WNBA greats. CC is amazing, but it was also amazing for CC to find someone like AB to grow her game with, and I hope they stay on the same team for their careers.

    One thing to know about sports is that there are many individuals involved who have the athleticism to play at a high level. But, you only play to a level of what has been shown to be possible. For example, I remember the Fosbury Flop in high jumping, once jumpers saw it and tried it, they started breaking records all over the place. When someone shows you a new possibility, you are compelled to work on it and make it part of your skill set. This is what CC is doing on her team. Now they are making passes and looking for plays they never conceived of until she showed them it can be done. Of course, I doubt there are many others with CC's IQ or feel for the game, but her skill set is remarkable for her age and experience.

    Just like Gretzky did in the NHL, they had to cover him to stop him shooting but he was also a great play maker, anyone who played with him elevated their game

    My favorite play at 8:38 Boston kicking it out to Hull. That is 80's Celtic level play.

    Mitchell has been quoted to saying that the whole team has to CATCH UP TO CLARK!!!!!!!! The team HAS to learn how Clark does what she does. They can SEE how CLARK see's by example. They HAVE to be able to learn from CLARK to keep up... IT"S JUST COMMON SENSE....... LEARNING BY EXAMPLE IS THE EASIEST WAY OF LEARNING. The whole team has come to realize that the more 3 pointers you get the better the points are..... You need FEWER 3 points rather then FIGHTING FOR 2. So the WHOLE team has been finding THIER SWEET SPOT for their 3 POINTERS.

    Playing with Aliyah and CC, all they have to do is run fast find a space on transition and of the half court play, those 2 will surely deliver the ball who ever is open.

    When I started watching it was fragmented ballplay at best! NOW the whole team is watching for the pass because they don’t want to get hit in the head by the ball when she passes to them and they are not LOOKING for the ball!!! I copied the comment from someone who posted this a week ago! At the time I thought it was very spot on and applicable for everyone!
