Dot forget to put you guess of how many pumpkins we harvested this time in the comments below folks. 😉😅 We hope you enjoy this update & the other shorts we post this week. Rob, B & Jack. 🐾🐾
They have them fitted here as well & we're keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand one on the sales pages. New ones are a bit out of our budget at the moment. Cheers mate 👍
Just a note to say that if you bring in contractors for concrete or electrical, maybe look around for more work that they can do at that time because you'll likely save some money on future service calls. Leftover concrete may be helpful as tractor ballast. I needed a 240v cable removed from the back of my house and then had the electrician install four more outlets and two boxes for lights in my garage. The three-stall garage had one porcelain light fixture and no electrical outlet next to the door opener. All existing outlets were on the back wall.
That's what e generally do as well Peyton. We're looking to borrow or hire a small tractor with a bucket to prep a few spots & remove some posts & get a second slab poured for the garden shed extension. Sparky wise, 😅 we still have so much work we need sorted....
It's fun that's for sure. I think removing more fences will be on the cards for the rest of the week. Would like to get them all down before the weather heats up too much. Hope you're all doing well mate.
G'day Rob and B, if you get some Araldite and some cheap red car gasket glue, mix it together in even parts ( do it outdoors as a chemical reaction happens that let's of a smoke ) you can use that around the seal to fix it while you wait for your new tanks. It's shrimp and bristles noses safe it's also petroleum safe to do a quick fix on a old victor carby. If you are worried about the water leaking while the glue dries put some tissue or towelling paper on the water run line
Cheers for that Jaydan. The leak around the valve stopped by itself as I thought it would as small bits of debris from the base of the tank got sucked into it. It's handy to know for down the road though. You were close with the pumpkins. We've got over 220 at last count. I say at last count as I pulled another 5 out when cutting back some of the long grass last week & dare I'll find more as I clear the rest of the pens out. 😅 Cheers & have a top one.
Looking at the way the tyres compressed under the weight when you took off, I’d be looking at filling the back tyres with water too… Liquid doesn’t compress like air. ❤
Cheers Mitchel. we'll be looking at adding water to both sets. Need to dodgy up a fitting to do the job & work out what additives to use to stop rust. I have a few trips coming up heading down south so will hit you up when I know what dates & get started on that project. 👍👍 Cheers mate.
That is seriously a LOT of pumpkins. My guess was 64, so was off by about 80! 😮 I feel you have clearly proven that pig poop grows good pumpkins! And good on B finding a great place to donate them. Due to rodents, we store our chook food, guinea pig hay, etc in metal garbage cans... which you can still buy at a certain hardware warehouse. Our chook feeder is hanging from a rafter to try and limit rodent access, and the guinea pigs night cage (to protect from foxes and bad weather) is raised on thin metal legs. Doesn't stop them completely, but has slowed them down. Our best rodent trap? The chooks! If they spot one they go full raptor on it. Work as a team, herd, capture, eat. I once saw them discover a nest of baby mice... I'm a tough old bird myself, but even I needed a lie down after that horror scene. 😅 Hope you guys have a great week!
There's a local mob that sell metal 44's that held foods stuffs that we're looking at getting. Might need to build B a stool so she can reach the base though. 😉 Our old chooks used to fight over the ones we caught in the humane trap. They were that brutal & took forever to dispatch the first poor critter we used to euthanise them before tossing them in after that. 😥 Thanks & hope you have a fantastic one as well. 😁
@@RobsAquaponics We used to use 44 gallon drums for the horse / chook feed when I was a kid. Our horse used to tell us it was dinner time by nudging the lids up so they slammed down, making a noise. 😁 And the thing about needing to reach the bottom to get feed... when they're that empty, you can tip them slightly to reach in. What I did when little. ButI'm 184cm now, so not an issue. 🤪
Go😂od to see the progress, the rats and mice are always an ongoing problem. I use to put molasses in buckets, it always attracted the rats.My cows would love the pumpkins lol
We need to switch up the bait here as they are leaving the peanut butter alone now Kerry. I'm thinking some bacon fat might do the trick as we still see them in the shed at night.
The skids on the sides of the slasher should be on the ground. Some are adjustable. A rear jockey wheel helps carry it too. Steering alignment check. Whilst the front wheels are set directly ahead, measure the centre to centre on the front of the wheels/tyres then the back. Adjust the tie rod to suit. They should be equal.
The problem we had was when the slasher was raised to drive through to the paddocks we want to work on it lifted the front. Was a bit to dodgy driving on slopes with not much control over the steering. That looks to been fixed with the weight & the issue is the wheel alignment as you suggested. We're looking to getting a jockey wheel but can only afford 2nd hand ones at the moment. We're scanning marketplace & other online 2nd hand sale sites at the moment for one as well as flail mowers. The other steering issue is due to a previous owner welding the top of the right hand side king pin to the pivot point slightly out of alignment after part of the pivot point broke off. The other one is loose & can't be tightened any further. Hope to have both replaced fairly soon. In the mean time we need to clean the filter/strainer to the power steering unit as the steering is seizing up after I gave it a good 3 hour run slashing a few paddocks on the weekend. B always said she wanted a project tractor. Spent too much time watching Pete over on @JustaFewAcresFarm but it looks like I'll be doing the work. 😅 Cheers mate.
I'm not a tractor expert but the mower on my compact tractor has 4 wheels to support the deck at a set height. That takes the weight off the tractor, at least while mowing. Regardless, the tractor should be able to support the weight of the mower especially with the front counterweight.
I think the weight at the front fixed the main issue of balance now I've done a fair bit more work with it Jeff. The other steering issue has to do with king pins that have been welded in the wrong position on the righthand side. The left one is very loose & can't be tightened any further. I think both sets including pivot pins need to be replaced at this point. B did say she wanted a project tractor. 😅
To fix the leak on the tank, unscrew the valve 75%, wrap with more thread tape or liquid thread tape and screw back in. We Do this at work all the time.
So easily 300 with what’s left in the field! I am having a bit of a similar issue with cherry tomatoes 😆 we picked 2 plants and had over 12lbs. Only 10 more bushes to go 😆
🤣 I think we're between 230 & 250 from what I can tell. The tally keeps rising though as I found that other 5 I mentioned in the members vid he other day Jennifer. What did you do with the tom's? Sorry for taking so long to respond as well. Missed a number of comments on a few videos by the look of it.
@@RobsAquaponics we just stopped picking more then we can eat 🤷🏻♀️ it’s too time intensive just to feed to the pigs. Which is where most extra have went. I did do some ketchup with them and it’s decent, the tomato sauce was way too sweet for our liking. So no point of canning up a batch.
I’m sure it will be good to fix the water tank situation there. I wonder what the thinking of the previous owners was to have the tanks so far from the house. Rodents are an eternal problem anywhere feed is stored or spilled by animals.
It was the original owners that set them up there looking at the pictures John. It's hard to find pic's that are older than the last listing online. We're up to 6 rats & 3 mice now. Hope to get most before the snakes start to get really active.
Hey Rob. I wonder if you could chuck on some snorkeling gear and put an o-ring and collet(nut?) or something on that fitting from inside the water tank?
The outlet from the tank is threaded into the plastic unfortunately. The next tanks we get will have holes drilled & proper fittings installed. Cheers Marcus.

thanks! Do you ever consider doing a woofer program? Like having farm interns live on site for a bit of training and experience and food/lodging? My friends in Hawaii had an aquaponics farm with a little yurt and it allowed her to get a lot of low cost labor to make some big projects possible.
We have friends that have used a similar backpackers work program Zombi & have made some fantastic friends from allover the world. We would like to do the same but at the moment we don't have the funds to bankroll many of the projects we have planned. It will happen at some point. 🤞 Cheers & all the best.
You may be able to view/download a manual online. If you have your own printer, then you can make the pages you need as you need them. By the way, there are some slasher/brushhog/ bushhog videos I've seen going into some details about dos and don'ts. There's also buyer's guides and common troubleshooting techniques.
We have both the owners & service manuals as PDF & just had them printed & bound. Not a cheap exercise but will be a lot easier to use when working in the shed. Cheers Ron & have a top one mate.
I've used skid slashers for a few years mate, admittedly my tractor was a lot bigger, you can use the top linkage to adjust the front and rear angle. You want it slightly angled up at the front (where the hydraulic housing should be or the tractor end of the PTO shaft). I don't know what controls you have for the height of the attachment or if you can float it a little. Sorry, couldn't be more help. might be possible to engineer some spacers so you can move the 2 stay bars, that may help a little in adjustment but I don't know. 11:09 - there is a way to safely remove that fan and switch yourself if you don't know what circuit it's on to isolate it. If you can ID the circuit it's even easier and can save some $$ (yes it's safe no you won't burn anything down) With that many pumpkins, you could set up a monster compost worm & compost system!
Thanks GK88. We need to fix the steering first then will look at getting a jockey wheel for the slasher. We're also keeping an eye out for a flail mower as they will sit closer to the tractor & not lift the front as much. We used the pumpkins as bait for the pigs but had no luck. Cheers mate.
In Victoria we use 100mm PVC and dig the stormwater pipes underground. Because water will always keep level, when it rains it still pushes up through the pipe and into the tank. Might back up too much with your volumes of rain though hey?
A few folks have suggested we try that. Not sure it's really viable for the ones next to the shed but it may be the go for the new ones we set up next to the house. Cheers Clayton.
yeah, in the grand scheme of things, that's not a lot of weight. you'll be better off building a box on the front or getting a 5 gallon bucket or bottom of a 55 gallon drum and filling it with concrete. (get some longer bolts or all thread to bolt the bucket/drum to the front then fill with concrete) as for water in the tires, there's a kind of beatjuice they put it in that's supposed to less reactive as far as rusting out the hubs.
I think the weight at the front fixed the main issue of balance WP. The steering issue has to do with king pins that have been welded in the wrong position on the righthand side & the left one is very loose & can't be tightened any further. There's too much play to keep the tyres straight. Both sets including pivot pins need to be replaced at this point I think. We looking at adding water & some sort of rust inhibitor. Just need to jerry rig some sort of adaptor for the hose. Cheers again mate.
It has always annoyed the hell out of me when moving to a property and finding loads of rubbish, some people even going to the lengths of hauling it up under the house. It is just like fly tippers the effort they put in to disposing of rubbish illegally flabbergasts me why not take it to tip or recycle. The rules here in New Zealand regarding real estate no give you an opportunity to inspect property immediately prior to to settlement and you can legally withhold money to cover your disposal costs ( I have moved about 9 times - seems a lot but 😊I am now 76)
I found a hot tub buried in my backyard a few years after living here (foreclosure purchase). The folks before had a hot tub on the back patio and instead of paying to haul it away, they decided to dig a huge hole and drop it in. Sigh. Before using it as a garden though, I'll probably need to dig out all of the soil to be certain of what is actually in there but I really ought to get rid of the doggone thing.
If we were closer & had an inspection the day before we may have put a stop to payment Pru. They gave us their word about certain things & reneged on them. I think I'm a tad old fashioned as I expect folks to do as they say in the matters of business when they give their word.
@@RobsAquaponics I agree. It's just a matter for me to get off my butt and make it happen. I guess the up side would be that the spot would then be available to put in some shrubs or a tree. If I left it, it could be the perfect spot to contain some cold-hardy bamboo, lol. Knowing my luck, though, the bamboo would probably escape.
I'm not sure & have to suss that out. The old owner didn't know much about the operation of it & I'm still waiting on the manual to come through. Cheers mate.
We have bore on the property but we haven't looked into getting a working pump for it yet. We really should look into it but keep having other pressing issues/problems pop up. 😅 We really need a fire fighting pump to move water from the dams & fight potential bush fires so we will be getting one of them before we sort out the bore I think. G'Day Folks, I think that the following videos might help you with your tractor problems. ua-cam.com/video/DWZdB6zX9JA/v-deo.html I also asked a question about the problems that you are having IE: hard to steer, weight problems, front wheels lifting etc. and this is the answer that I received... It sounds like you’re experiencing some common issues with your tractor. Here are a few things you might want to check: Weight Distribution: When you attach a heavy implement like a slasher to the rear, it can cause the front of the tractor to lift. Adding front weights or a front-end loader can help balance the weight distribution. Tire Pressure: Ensure that your tires are properly inflated. Low tire pressure can make steering more difficult. Steering System: Check the steering system for any signs of wear or damage. This includes the steering linkage, hydraulic system, and power steering fluid levels. Ballast: Adding ballast to the front of the tractor can help keep the front wheels on the ground. This can be done with front weights or a front-mounted implement. Slasher Attachment: Make sure the slasher is properly attached and not causing undue stress on the tractor’s rear. Sometimes, improper attachment can lead to balance issues. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it might be a good idea to consult with a professional mechanic or your tractor’s manufacturer for further assistance. Do you have any specific details about the tractor model or the slasher that might help narrow down the problem?... Which led me to search further and find this... ua-cam.com/video/3MaL5cC0eNw/v-deo.html
Once we become a bit more financial & grow more to feed others we will. We have friends that have had some great WWOOFers help them out over the years.
I think you're about the closest yet Brian as we counted 220 ish looking at past videos, pictures & what visitors took that we didn't document. . In saying that, I found another 5 when clearing a small part of the top pen last week so we might yet have more to add to the count when I clear the bottom ones. 😅 Cheers & have a top one mate.
Might be a bit expensive & a right pain in the butt to do but could you not put the tanks underground (save space & ugly looking things above ground ) ???
Sorry, I don't understand.... We're heading into autumn and the internet tells me that the earth is flat. How can you be going into spring? Oh I figured it out, it's an old video!

Sorry, couldn't be more help. might be possible to engineer some spacers so you can move the 2 stay bars, that may help a little in adjustment but I don't know.
11:09 - there is a way to safely remove that fan and switch yourself if you don't know what circuit it's on to isolate it. If you can ID the circuit it's even easier and can save some $$ (yes it's safe no you won't burn anything down)
With that many pumpkins, you could set up a monster compost worm & compost system!
Crooks also love pumpkins if you open them up😊
Crooks might like pumpkins?😋
😄 I knew what you meant Pru.
I think they're over eating the pumpkins but have been chowing down on the larvae that are in them I noticed the other day.
@@RobsAquaponics The chooks say it's good eating😁
Blame google spell check Pru...🤣
63 pumpkins! Lol idk where I get that number.
🤔 I think one off the previous harvest had about 63.
How is that rain gutter grow system going with the Hooch buckets
In a box waiting for a fenced area to set it up.😳😥
Try filling tyres with water too
Scrap that haha. Just saw you mention that
👍 No problem 😅
yeah, in the grand scheme of things, that's not a lot of weight. you'll be better off building a box on the front or getting a 5 gallon bucket or bottom of a 55 gallon drum and filling it with concrete.
@@RobsAquaponics they've got adapters for that, I've seen them at tractor supply here stateside and on Amazon, fairly cheep IIRC, under $5 USD
@@wolfpreist Will have a gander, thanks mate.
Tractor steering might be a LSD issue. Try disengaging the lock unless you are in a bog.
Thanks for that. Fixing a few other issues with it & I think the diff lock might be stuck on as well.
Cheers.
@@PeytonWind Probably not the best thing to leave breaking down slowly in the soil.
Needs a pivot tire on the back will help
Yep. Have priced a few kits but we're waiting for a cheaper option to turn up on market place. 😉
I have one on an old John Deere I don’t know what the freight would be from Oklahoma to you
@@terrancerine8387 Thanks Terrance but would probably be more than a new one locally going on the last lot of postage I got charged from the States.
🎃
😅👍
Hi Rob, Is your diff lock on ? I know my tractor doesn't steer well if locker is on, it just pushes straight ahead
I'm not sure & have to suss that out. The old owner didn't know much about the operation of it & I'm still waiting on the manual to come through.
Cheers mate.
My guess was 37...just slightly off 143...🤣
Tuirns out to be over 220 now Anna 😅
Chooks not crooks 😅😅😅
🤣
Just a water question. Are you solely going to bank on rain/dam water or are you connected to scheme or a bore?
We have bore on the property but we haven't looked into getting a working pump for it yet. We really should look into it but keep having other pressing issues/problems pop up. 😅
We really need a fire fighting pump to move water from the dams & fight potential bush fires so we will be getting one of them before we sort out the bore I think.
Cheers & have a top one.
168 pumpkins.
I think we worked out ir=t was about 220ish Ian. We had a few guests take a few we didn't count + I collected another 5 that were hidden in the long grass last week. 🤣
Cheers mate.
Here are a few things you might want to check:
Weight Distribution: When you attach a heavy implement like a slasher to the rear, it can cause the front of the tractor to lift.
You should look into being wwoof hosts!! I would sign up to help you out in a heartbeat!
Once we become a bit more financial & grow more to feed others we will. We have friends that have had some great WWOOFers help them out over the years.
237 in total including the last batch
I think you're about the closest yet Brian as we counted 220 ish looking at past videos, pictures & what visitors took that we didn't document. . In saying that, I found another 5 when clearing a small part of the top pen last week so we might yet have more to add to the count when I clear the bottom ones. 😅
Cheers & have a top one mate.
@@RobsAquaponics haha enjoy and keep up the good work. The farm is really coming along.
Might be a bit expensive & a right pain in the butt to do but could you not put the tanks underground (save space & ugly looking things above ground ) ???
We would love to but that would be an expense we can't justify at the moment.
Cheers Gary.
Sorry, I don't understand.... We're heading into autumn and the internet tells me that the earth is flat. How can you be going into spring?
Oh I figured it out, it's an old video!
🤣 Don't get me started. I was told I was an actor a year or two ago as Australia is fake..... 🤔
I think you mean Austria 😂

We ended up with just over 220 between the 2 plants so far Jean. I did find another 5 last week clearing out some of the long grass & haven't finished yet so there may be more. 😅
If you try filling the tires, put some rust inhibitor in also. Last thing you need is the rims rotting out.
.
That was one of our first concerns as well. Cheers Mack.
