  • G'Day Folks. Had the nutrient level in the aquaponics system tested & thought it would interesting for fellow aqua growers to see the results. I also run through the nutrient supplements that we add on a regular basis.
Will be posting a follow-up clip on how the amendments are going in a few weeks time.
Hope you enjoy this quick update & your gardens are booming.
    Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

Can we use organic fertilizer for other Nutrient deficiencies.?
Are potassium bicarb and calcium hydroxide, chelated iron are they safe to fish.?

    • @RobsAquaponics

@@samsunny6483 Those ones are safe for fish. 👍 I would recommend only using organic fertilisers but not ones that use a great deal of nitrogen or ammonia as there should be more than enough in the waste provided by the fish.

Not really, occasionally I'll put in some liquid seaweed but I'm guessing with amounts and I think the actual problem may be my ph sits around 8.2 and I can't seem to bring it down. Even though I painted my tanks I still browny green slime on them. I also have old roots through my grow beds but I've put in a hand full of worms into each grow bed and I thought that would fix that. I only see 1 or 2 occasionally so maybe they've got through to the tanks and been eaten?

Great clip Rob thank you. To make it easy to add nutrients i find it useful to embed a shallow cup under the inlet pipe. That way you just dump the powder into the cup, it dissolves and the water overflows into the system. You do get a bit of algae in the cup but its easily cleaned.

You could do the magnesium test at home if you can obtain sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid.
However, you would probably need to buy a much more precise scale (milligrams) and take more water from your system (5 gallons)

What kinds of dangers are there to supplementing iron in other ways? I sometimes will have an iron deficiency in my soil growing beds, which I remedy by simply burying a rusty nail at the base of each plant, and I find that this usually works quite well. Would this same method work for an aquaponics system? Or would the rust in the water be toxic to the fish?

Rust from a nail is iron oxide so isn't readily available for plants in aquaponics. Am taking an educated guess & say that there are other organisms in the soil that would be converting that nail into a plant available form. 👍 I know a number of folks that have had the same results as you BTW.

    • @RobsAquaponics

Not as I see it you can't.
Some will claim that you just keep adding more feed (namely commercial pellets) & that will be all you need but then you run into issues of having far too many Nitrates which needs to be removed or it could cause issues with the fish.

A lot of it was picked up cheap 2nd hand or was gifted to us so can't give you an "off the shelf price" sorry mate.
To buy the fish tank, large media bed with a stand, media, plumbing, pumps clay media, stands new & the 2nd hand IBCs & barrels as I have it set up you'd be looking at about $2500.
I got a lot of this gear VERY cheaply 2nd hand or for free. I'm also using a lot of the parts for the 3 or forth time so at a guess I think I've probably spent $400 putting it together as you see it here today. Most of that is filter material & the new pump.
It's FAR cheaper to use the 2nd hand IBC & drums for small backyard systems & would advise anyone starting out to use them before outlaying wads of cash for the "You Beaut " aquaculture tanks & filters.
