Because that’s exactly what shadow was experiencing, he was literally going through a PTSD-included panic attack as he struggled through the jungle, rouge’s cry for help reminded him of Maria, and he was helplessly trying to prevent another death.

How come after this game, Shadows music became like a Metal genre? I like this industrial techno music much more. I think it represents Shadows character much better
What are you talking about, even to this day (in Sonic Forces at least), Shadow's music leans heavily into the industrial rock and electronic realm. There was plenty of industrial music cues for his stories in Heroes and 06 and it made up most of the music in the Shadow game, hell even Generations had a sick remix of For True Story as his boss battle music so like, since when did it ever really change?
The lyrics to me sound like shadow's internal dissonence. Hes frantic to save rouge so she doesnt end up like maria, but hes trying to play off his ptsd fueled panic sprint as "just going for the emerald" Hence the "im not scared at all, are you scared of something" line
I see it more as Shadow’s deep subconscious taunting Shadow (“Are you scared of something? / Shadow, don’t make me upset….”) and Shadow’s consciousness suppressing it with “I don’t mind any obstacles / I am not scared at all”. Basically, Shadow is literally having a PTSD-induced panic attack.
Throw It All Away is the only one you can understand decently. Although if you listen to the songs enough you will hear the lyrics clearly and be able to sing them too.
Pretty sure the reason they made Shadow's songs' lyrics hard to understand was to add to the mystery of his character, as his true motives are also hidden throughout the game. The lyrics in his music give strong hints at what he's thinking too.
@@Thebes342 exactly the lyrics and genre of the songs for SA2 are portrayed in a certain way to symbolize a character's personality feelings and motives
Shadow is having a PTSD panic attack in this stage. His deep subconscious is taunting him (“Are you scared? Shadow, don’t make me upset….You’re hiding something!”). Shadow’s ego is suppressing these thoughts from reaching the surface level (“I am not scared at all. I don’t mind any obstacles. I don’t want to hear you.”) To protect him from having those negative thoughts brought up to the surface, he constantly re-focusing his thoughts to his main objective, almost as if he has OCD. The voice, presumably in Shadow’s mind, tells him to hurry to the unexplored land, while referring to itself in the first person, “I’m not scared at all, And I don’t wanna hear you” and proceeds to taunt Shadow, “Are you scared of something” Literally speaking, they don’t make sense. Shadow is already on the island, and he’s been here for the past 50 years, making it the opposite of unexplored. Could it be Shadow’s doubt, that part of him that knows what Maria really wants, is mocking him for his fear of running toward the truth, which is the real unexplored land? The song is constructed to sound inspirational, to steel one’s determination, but maybe in this case the purpose is inverted, like the voice is saying, “I don’t want to hear your excuses, I’m not afraid of the truth, so why are you?” Lol I’m analyzing a kids’ game about a supersonic black hedgehog
There is a lot to analyze in this game story wise it was very ambitious for it's time. also sonic used to be meant for everyone not just kids, I hate the fact this series has been dumbed down to kids fodder platformer.
The music's feeling sounds a sense of adventure and crazy's mix, combine with all Shadow's thought about your true past. He's trying kinda forget what happened with Maria and all G.U.N's stuff in the Ark "singing" for yourself not hear the voice in your head madly, like a person drugging yourself and drinking for forget your problems, same time he's confused if he really want this. It's... so hollow...
i think its like the top comment says, and that shadow is having a PTSD-induced panic attack due to rogue's helplessness. the overall instrumental feels very corrupted and its like he's repeating the line about not being scared to himself. it feels he believes that if he lies to himself enough, it will become true. like when a kid is going to the bathroom in the dark at night and they're repeating that they're not scared of the dark. the lyrics feel kind of hollow while the overall instrumental and delivery of the lines sound extremely distressed, and i think its that distress that is the reality of the situation i think that if he's scared of anything it would be having to go through maria's death again. the unknown land is probably just the future also i really love that this is the jungle level's music and not some jungly-sounding instruments or whatever. i love that SA2 gets its music inspiration from the story context rather than the level location

Bro... I looked at the time after reading this and it was 3:38 am in 2022. Always played this race just to hear the song. This was the best Sonic game ever.
I love the meaning of the song's lyrics and melody. Not only it reflects Shadow's entrance into an unexplored jungle which he knows he will be able to blast through based upon his abilities, but also how it may pose some threat due to the lack of knowledge regarding it, which is meant to reflect his current thoughts: this stage takes place after Shadow decides to search for Rouge, so his determination for the destruction and punishment of the world is casted into doubts as he recognizes someone who he values as much as he did before. But he isn't gonna let those thoughts affect his final objetive, is he? Oh yeah, hurry into the unexplored and find it out.
I love that this was the point where the game told you Shadow isn't a heartless villain and that he has legitimate good in him. He could've just written Rouge off as dead weight/expendable, but he decided the best course of action was to go "Ah, shoot! Troublemaker...!" and run to get Rouge out.
It's still in the Forces remix but they bumped it towards the end of the song at like 2:19. I'm more upset that the upright bass breakdown at 1:29 is missing.
"You have 1 minute and 25 seconds to get the fuck off of this goddamn rock before I blow it up like Krakatoa blows up a fucking volcano. It's about to be Mt. Fiji in this bitch."
As a younger generation Sonic fan (SA and SA 2 were released well before I was born, so I couldn't play them until recently), I oftentimes understand references in reverse. An example is this song. I recognize this song (and many others) because of their remixes in newer games
I recognize most of the Adventure Era OST because of how prevalent it was on the flash games/animations back in the day, playing Sonic Final Fantasy X and watching Super Mario Bros Z was the shit
this game has such a wide range of genres, and theyre all BANGERS...between Knuckles' levels' rap songs, Shadow's industrial-techno/DnB, Sonic's "buttrock" (hey, the Lyrics may be cliche, but the Songs still rock)...theres something for Everyone!
as a kid I could NEVER get past Security Hall, but this was available in the game's sound test to listen to. i would always listen to this and wonder about the next level
This level is named after when, during the early stages of SA2's development, an albino Sonic Team intern was caught naked in bathroom by none other than Yuji Naka, to which he remarked that his pubes looked like a "white jungle", and the nickname stuck.
Sonic Team, only Sonic Team cared that much about their music tracks even when they did Nights and Burning Rangers, they had to make it personalized and composed.
Learning what I have of Shadow's past.. knowing this is his first time on the very planet him and Maria talked about for so long is strangely tragic.. he doesn't remember his true intentions, only manipulation by those only wishing to further their own ambitions, fighting to find his place in this new world.. knowing nothing of himself. Say what you will, but the song fits so well
Shadow's levels always felt the coolest because of the music. Then final chase is the perfect last song for his story ending. This game always felt perfect for shadow to die at the end
What upsets me the most is that while Sonic has 10 stages on Hero story, Shadow which becomes more and more interesting as a character in the Dark story only has 4, and that's not counting the fact that Sky rail was supposed to be yet another Sonic level before they decided to make It a Shadow stage (even sky rail's theme sounds more adventurous, like Sonic's style and personality, but im glad It was used for Shadow because It shows that despite his goals and seriousness, he can be reckless and have more of a cocky attitude when he wants to.). I actually liked playing as Eggman because Eggman actually Felt like a threath in SA2, and most of his stages were more Fun than Tails's stages, but playing more mech and the god awful Rouge stages (fuck mad space) instead of the Speed stages, the better stages of the game, was disappoiting. I wish Shadow had at least 6 - 7 stages for himself instead of 4. he could have his own version of Metal Harbor for example, but with a different gimmick at the end like escaping from the jets bombing the area before he gets to the forest, BEFORE Sonic gets released from Jail, then Metal Harbor takes place and that would explain why the jets were already bombing the airfield, i'm Just giving examples ofc. Also his version of another Ark speed stage besides Final Chase, sort like Crazy gadget but with a different gimmick. I Just preffer the speed stages over the mech and treasure hunting ones tbh, and I wish Dark Story had at least 2 more of them. It Just Felt disappointing in comparison with the amount you get to play as Sonic.
@@naoaquieopatrickpatrick8565 Sonic actually has 6 stages he almost got 7 since Sky Rail was originally a Sonic stage, but they changed it to Shadow at the last minute. that's kind of why Sky Rail's music sounds like something from a Sonic stage and not a Shadow stage.
For the longest time I honestly thought the lyrics of the song were tied to what was happeneing in the stage at that time. Like Shadow was running to get off the island before it exploded. This is what I heard all those years ago when I played: Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island, I'm not scared at all I'm just going insane, Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island, Don't mind these walls or any obstacles, Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island, I'm not scared at all but I don't wanna blow up, I don't wanna blow up. Shadow don't make me upset, I don't want to kill you, Shadow don't make me upset, Your path is just ahead.

Radical Highway is my fave Shadow level, but White Jungle is top three without question.
Agreed
I love that this was the point where the game told you Shadow isn't a heartless villain and that he has legitimate good in him. He could've just written Rouge off as dead weight/expendable, but he decided the best course of action was to go "Ah, shoot! Troublemaker...!" and run to get Rouge out.
Such a good iteration of the genre Jungle breakbeat
0:39 *Oh my goodness, this part is so cool.*
*This is Shadow's Theme, because have lyrics just like "Last Story".*
Sonic Movie 3 soundtrack must have rhythm and balance
It must be also be written by the Japanese too. I don't like how Americans have turned him into Alvin and the Chipmunks and Hop in these films
1:10 - 1:16 is the biggest reason why I prefer this over the Sonic forces remix.
Move that up to 1:04 and I totally agree with you.
The sonic forces remix has that part towards the end though, doesn't it.
That beat is still amazing
D
N
B
It's still in the Forces remix but they bumped it towards the end of the song at like 2:19. I'm more upset that the upright bass breakdown at 1:29 is missing.
the only series where a jungle can be next to a forest
lol
"Shadow, don't make me upset..."
Cause you won't like Maria when she's upset.
"You have 1 minute and 25 seconds to get the fuck off of this goddamn rock before I blow it up like Krakatoa blows up a fucking volcano. It's about to be Mt. Fiji in this bitch."
BlOwS Up!?!
@@Honest_Mids_Masher You weren't supposed to hear that, pretend he said "Nose up"!
"Man, now I gotta go save this weird ahh bat-girl."
I too am a younger generation sonic fan, and am now playing SA2 for the first time. It's absolutely amazing
this song sounds like a mental breakdown
S tier in game music
Objectively correct
0:06 *ROBLOX INTENSFINES*
Can't unhear it now
I cant unhear it
No. It’s Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
😂
The part at 1:03 sounds like the squeaky boots from that one Spongebob episode
It DOES hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahajahahajahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahaha.
shadow is the adorablest hedgy ever
This would go crazy in dmc
Am I the only one who thinks that this would nicely fit in the early Devil May Cry games?
Are these voices what Shadow is thinking to himself?
Most lyrics represents some of the thoughts of each character so yeah your on point
Yes, this song is about two sides of Shadow
Yes
@@AxisChurchDevotee that's what makes SA2's music so special
With the new generations coming out I know the remix is about to be crazy
this game has such a wide range of genres, and theyre all BANGERS...between Knuckles' levels' rap songs, Shadow's industrial-techno/DnB, Sonic's "buttrock" (hey, the Lyrics may be cliche, but the Songs still rock)...theres something for Everyone!
0:07 when i was little i used to think this was saying “what i do”
Wait it doesn't
This holds up so well all these years later. I do love jungle breaks though
SEGA really did not need to go this hard on the soundtrack. Wow
This beat is CRAZY!! Crazy Shadow vibes!
You can beat this level without jumping once
Wow. I never thought of that.
wut ._.
I have never played a single Sonic game in my life before, and this song fucking slaps
this level used to hype me up so hard . this song is like insane
that drummer was 100% on something in the recording booth
they’re programmed drums lol
@@nayru1855 they put cocaine through the pc fans
this is one of the best songs in sonic adventure 2 change my mind
the genre is called jungle drum and bass. kinda clever
jungle and drum and bass are two different genres. This is more jungle than dnb because of the aggressive break chops and complex drum work
The Scratching Breakdown is just...
*(Chef's Kiss)*
"Hurry to the Olive Garden" has a whole new meaning with the Sonic movies 😂
Shoutout to whoever scratched on this
Favorite track in the whole game
OH YEAH HURRY TO THE OLIVE GARDEN!
Shadow wants some pasta
You know, for a White Jungle, this sure does look as green as the forest we go through as Sonic.
this sounds like a panic attack. really good
I like this whole song, but the first couple of seconds are honestly one of my favorite parts of any Sonic track
Is everyone just ignoring the monkey noises at the start?
I thought it was super cool making it fit to the song
Does anyone else buy cds of incredible soundtracks like the one for this game? I absolutely love White Jungle!
bro they must have burned some equipment while doing all those songs, that shit goes hard
white jungle is a super underrated stage
as a kid I could NEVER get past Security Hall, but this was available in the game's sound test to listen to. i would always listen to this and wonder about the next level
Shadow, don't make me upset...
Most fun stage in the whole game!
This level is named after when, during the early stages of SA2's development, an albino Sonic Team intern was caught naked in bathroom by none other than Yuji Naka, to which he remarked that his pubes looked like a "white jungle", and the nickname stuck.
yup that sounds about right
What the fuck, if that's true that's really funny
Everett Bradley had no business going as hard as he did for Shadow's music
Ho *HO* Ho ho *HO*
oof oof OOF *OOF*
0:38 This part 😫👍
1:03 makes me want to dance uncontrollably
Sonic Team, only Sonic Team cared that much about their music tracks even when they did Nights and Burning Rangers, they had to make it personalized and composed.
Rhythm and Balance...for _White Jungle..._
...is actually jungle itself...
🤯 Junglist Massive
@@naoaquieopatrickpatrick8565 Sonic actually has 6 stages
he almost got 7 since Sky Rail was originally a Sonic stage, but they changed it to Shadow at the last minute. that's kind of why Sky Rail's music sounds like something from a Sonic stage and not a Shadow stage.
@@GiordanDiodato no, he actually has 7 including the final stage (which shadow isn't included in???)
This song 100% founded my love for dnb as a child 🔥
I have so many ost’s from the DC era of gaming. JSR and all the Capcom fighters were killer.
For the longest time I honestly thought the lyrics of the song were tied to what was happeneing in the stage at that time. Like Shadow was running to get off the island before it exploded. This is what I heard all those years ago when I played:
Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island,
I'm not scared at all I'm just going insane,
Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island,
Don't mind these walls or any obstacles,
Oh yeah hurry near the exploding island,
I'm not scared at all but I don't wanna blow up, I don't wanna blow up.
Shadow don't make me upset,
I don't want to kill you,
Shadow don't make me upset,
Your path is just ahead.
The first 5 seconds SNAPS!
My favorite thing about this song is that this is co-produced by Fumie Kumatani who's responsible for the jazzy tracks in SA2 and Unleashed
From 2001 for this 2020, it's a legend for Hardcore Sonic fan.
1:02
That beat though
This theme would fit ultrakill pretty well
It's been 19 years since Shadow was hurling to the Olive Garden, I just need to know if he ever got the chance to hurl at his local Olive Garden
Most people hurl after their visit to their local olive garden
Gerald messed Shadow up in the head so bad.
this song paired with the level was seriously so vibey
