Just picked up your Griddle 101 e-book and boy what a nice tool. It is seriously legit, love the way it is formatted. And it’s great to have right there on my phone! Damn good deal!
Hi Joe, thank you so much for purchasing the ebook I really appreciate it. I'm so glad that you like it and I hope it helps you make some great griddle meals!
Love the newsletter, lots of great ideas! They also remind me of things that I wanted to try but often something shiny distracts me. My wife says I don't pay attention, she said a bunch of other things that i don't recall,
I use a small hotel / steam tray to melt cheese or to keep things warm while I am cooking other things. I have a 22-in griddle so real estate is not always available. I have used a small soup pan to make sauces on the griddle while I'm griddling. Totally agreed it's not worth it if you're looking to boil something. Great video Johnny!
If you're absolutely determined to deep fry something outside, get yourself a nice heavy dutch oven (doesn't matter who makes it, but try to get an enamel coated one), and a PIC "burner". I had to have one of these things to replace a broken glass cooktop once. Now I have 3 of them. They're induction "hotplates" that work with most any steel core pan, and cast iron, and can hold oil temp at a steady temp for you nearly indefinitely. If your griddle has the side tables, particularly the table on the right (the larger 36" with the extendable table works best), it's a really good place to put it. Just a thought.
Best part about the setup I'm talking about... there's no flame involved. It's all magnetic induction. Just gotta make sure your pot is induction-ready, or cast iron, or even ceramic coated cast iron. No flame, no chance of fire from an oil spill, or splash, unless you use it very very near the burner on the griddle.
Hey JB, I have the 28” blackstone with the side table on the left, asked my sweetie to find me a small rack to set thing on and she found a rack that is perfect for holding a cookie sheet about 3” above. Too much for the grill but on the side table against the griddle is perfect and I still have my full griddle to cook on. Next to my griddle I have my gas bbq with a side burner, works great for boiling-heating pans or whatever. I’m still working out where the treager fits best but I’m cooking outside and that’s a win! Love the vids, keep them coming please.
Heck ya that sounds like a sweet set up my friend. I hope to have a set up like that one day. Nothing beats cooking outside in my opinion. It's just so relaxing.
Something I have been happily surprised by was a significant reduction in my electricity bill since I started cooking almost exclusively on my Blackstone last April. I didn't realize electric stoves used so much electricity. So...finding ways to use pots and pans on the griddle might help save some electricity. Will you save money using propane over electricity? I haven't done serious number crunching but my guess is yes. As usual, every time I watch one of your videos Johnny, I get a craving for something you show. I think I see cheesesteaks for dinner tonight.
That's good Danny. I don't know if propane is cheaper than electric but it sounds like it's working well for you. I hope you made those cheesteaks last night. Thanks for watching buddy.
Great. Just great. Went to WalMart for a new cooler for a camping trip tomorrow. Saw the Blackstone 22” with a lid, a side table and a stand on clearance for $125 and now I don’t have a new cooler. I do, however, have a new Blackstone 22” with a lid, a side table and a stand. And a wife who may or may not kill me in my sleep. I blame you. Thanks.
The Saturday emails are great, lots of good griddle advice. I am thinking using a cast iron skillet on the stove will be the best way for me to make sausage gravy.
Really think you should possibly try voicing on radio and commercials. I listen to your videos more than watch. Very easy to listen to plus you always sound genuine. Thanks for the help on the flat top.
Great video Johnny! My roommate bought the "Blackstone 17" ON THE GO W/SIDE BURNER" last year (propane) but it was December in South Dakota. It is still in the cardboard box in the garage. I told him I wasn't gonna' cook outside in DEC / JAN / FEB in South Dakota, - so he bought the Blackstone 17" E-series and I've made a LOT of food on that thing (he'll buy damn near anything if he gets to eat the SPECTACULAR food that I make as a noob cook learning from YT). The e-Series has limitations w/ a small surface area & ceramic coating = using plastic spats that melt above 400F sucks, but I'm hoping wood / bamboo will allow higher temps. I am determined to break out the propane Blackstone with cast iron griddle & side burner this spring. I really want to be able to use metal spats (but I don't have any yet) and the side burner could be a real game changer - meal by meal - as you discussed in the video - having a PLAN & the PAN is GREAT. With the 17" ON THE GO - I can EASILY turn the side burner heat up & down separate from the griddle. We already have a deep fryer, but that's also an option with the side burner - using a cast iron dutch oven as a deep fryer would be a cinch. PARTY ON OHIO!
Hey buddy. The 17" with a side burner sounds nice. I haven't seen those. I'm glad you've been working with the e series. I felt the same way when I had mine. It worked fine but had some limitations. I hope you get the propane one out and use it a few times before it's way too cold. Have a good one.
I’ve thought about this, drank some beer, pondered for a while longer and I think, while I’m drinking more beer now, that you should be fine using those cheap, disposable pans if you season the inside of them like people season cast iron. You probably don’t want to blast them in a 500+ degree oven though. Do it at a lower temperature and see how that works. You will essentially be creating a polymerized coating that protects your food from the aluminum just like the can liners inside aluminum cans protect your beer from the can. All aluminum cans have liners these days regardless of whether or not it’s advertised. Obviously, you will want to reuse your pan after you’ve taken the trouble to season it and create a nice, funky looking coating that will last forever. Disclaimer, I’m not a chemist, but I do play one on T.V.!
A new nickname for you. The Teflon John! Seriously, go to your local thrift store and buy a stainless steel sauce pan for $2 or pick up some enamel camping pans. Great video as usual Johnny!
I use a separate propane burner for frying. The downside is that I can only use one pan, but one pan works for a lot of what i do, and it works great for a wok...

I have not seen it happen but if the manual on your specific brand says not to then I would not. And yes I agree about a cold cast iron on a searing hot griddle would probably cause it to warp as well. What brand do you have?
I see no purpose in putting a pan on the griddle except for sauces. Even then, I would prefer a stove top ring for a pan. The griddle itself is the "pan". The same goes with deep frying; use a stove top ring. We had one on the side of a smoker for a very large cast iron pan.

Before it's appearance (BGE) I'd thought I really wanted one - was going to buy from the place where Johnny works this past Summer but still using my griddle way more than what I think I'd use an Egg - if they are running a sale this Fall/Winter I'd probably clear some space on the patio and take the plunge...
@@Scotty_in_Ohio Before spending big $$ on BGE you might want to try the Akorn 20in from Char-Griller. Walmart had it on sale for $177 last weekend (I think they are >$300, normally) and it is probably my favorite charcoal grill. Mine is over 7 years old. I got the stone insert online and with it I can use as a smoker for up to 8 hours on one load of fuel. It cooks just like the BGE. I really like that it is a double wall insulated steel egg shape that can get up to steak searing 700 degrees on the inside and you can still touch the outside of it and not get burned. Very safe to operate on a porch with kids around! The BGE gets too hot to touch, esp for kids. The BGE is a great grill, if you can afford the investment. Of course, I also love my Char-Griller 3-burner griddle , that I found online at Home Depot, on sale for $200 delivered this summer! A fella has to save some money for beer. Ha!
Thanks for the heads up on the pan John, I did replace it yesterday. That's awesome that you built your own smoker. I do cook on it regularly but don't film. With my job I barely have enough time to make the griddle videos so I just stick with those. Also I don't really know what I'm doing with the smoker yet (I probably don't know what I'm doing with the griddle either lol). But that's why I don't make any videos about it. One day I will though just need to learn some more.

Before spending big $$ on BGE you might want to try the Akorn 20in from Char-Griller.
