I remember "Old School" - A memory from 1955. I left for school and my Dad was starting to hand dig a drainage field (Leach line) for the septic tank that he had just put in using wood forms and hand-mixed concrete. When I got back from school, the drainage line was done. Fifty feet long, 18 inches wide and 3 feet deep. The soil was mostly clay with lots of rocks, so this was pick and shovel work at its worst. My Dad had injured his back in WWII, had a VA disability, was known to have back pain every waking moment. Yet, He moved over 8 cubic yards of dirt by hand during the time I was in school. That is nearly the capacity of a dump truck, one shovel at a time.
Joe, if the gravel is coming the next day, Leppo Rents was indeed the wise choice.
That is a great story Dave. That is A LOT of digging!!
LOL! Oh Joe, you had me laughing all throughout this one. You're so comical, it's so good to have a laugh and even though you're feeling a bit stressed, the challenge ahead will prove as yet another opportunity to add to your ever-increasing list of skills and accomplishments. Elaine from Canada here, looking forward to seeing you dig up that soppy driveway. Now you've got us all waiting for the next installments. Stay safe "Big Boy".
LOL Thanks Elaine. But I think I will stick to firewood. This was pretty much out of my league LOL
Hilarious!! Your sense of humor is great!!
I'm betting after this rental you will be loving the mini excavator. That Marty is a heck of a salesman making sure you experienced how nice it was to load the live deck with an excavator.
He is a super cool dude. I highly recommend him Jason!
Your facial expressions in this video were priceless. Can't wait for the big dig!
LOL Thanks Joe!
This is what you need...you need your own...I'll help...I'll buy a sticker...
LOL... That would be a start. Could you imagine putting down $100k on one of these things? wow!
Joe you got this.once you get the feel for the controls you will be a natural and want to go and find ore you can rip &tear into. 👍
Umm.... LOL. This thing is not very easy for me. A lot of action for sure!
Good morning Joe. Nice machine. I’ve rented that same size excavator several times before. In my early years, I probably would have tried the shovel method until my back and helpers started screaming. To bad you couldn’t have invited Adam back over with his neighbor Doug. This entire thing would be done by lunch. The main thing with running that machine is getting your hand movements in sync with your brain and eyes. With your experience on your tractor, I suspect that this will be a short learning curve for you. You should consider doing a live stream while you are digging
OMG a livestream??? I would be kicked off UA-cam LOL!
That the weather I expected from Ohio, good luck on the digging
Got cold real fast. Had two inches of snow yesterday. I'm not ready for this
@@ohiowoodburner
We got about 2-3 inches of that white stuff
Exciting times!! Don’t get too good on that thing. You might start wanting one.
There is no WAY I could afford one of these. These things are amazing!
I love your sense of humor
Thanks Lars!!
Great to see you with an excavator...I remember way back when I suggested to you that you should get an excavator when you were deciding what type of machine to get / fit your budget...isn't this a great tool to add to your tool belt and fun too...be safe enjoy go gettem
This thing is an AMaZING machine Mike. If anything it is worth the rental fee just to play around with it for the weekend!
hey joe I'm not to far away from you. I used to operate mini and full size excavators for my own business
Where do you live Leo? How'd you like that snow yesterday?
I could probably operate that excavator with my eyes closed
This is great even if this takes you longer you will gain a skill to expand in the years to come
Umm... LOL. Stay tuned LOL!
Hey Joe great intro. You will acclimate in short order and then you will start finding that you will need haha one of your own.
All I need is $100k and it's mine!
What length is everyone cutting there bundle wood at?
Everything is cut at 16"
I like your new video the moming you will do a good jop you can do at love your video buddy 🔥
Thank you so much 😁
Good Morning from Idaho!
Good morning! We have a big gun store out this way called Stockers. Nice to see you and hope you come back for future videos. Joe
@@ohiowoodburner I have shopped there! Stocker's Shop is owned by a distant relative of mine.
Next summer you can dig a small pond to hold the water.
Believe it or not I already have one. I think that is what caused much of the problems my land has with drainage. The previous owner put it in and really butchered it up.
I have Kubota KX40 as well as Kobelco 150 , I'd do it for you if you were closer :):) Make sure to put road fabric down
If you spend a lot of money but you not get the drainage right, the quality of the repair will be low. Cost is always a concern for a business. Will you tell us the cost? We had some dirt roads out in the country. The better roads had some gravel put on top of them. Dirt roads are serviceable until it rains.
You will get better Joe it only takes a few hours on the controls and you will be fluent, But I think you made a great decision too do it yourself because not only will you save money but you will have the knowledge and skills for other future projects
Thanks Hunt. Gonna give it a try!
Our E50 is going to be here on Monda, Nov 7. We have E35's, but we are going bigger.
Cool
Thanks Doc!
Hard to beat an excavator with a thumb for handling logs . A grapple of course is better but it only does one thing . Good video Joe 👍
Very accurate statement Gus!
You will do great Joe! Marty is a great sales man! He will have Joe sold on an excavator soon! 🤣 Have fun Joe.
If you can lend me $100,000 I will buy one!
Joe hi, you are a persistent excavator operator, you are doing well, I hope that the road will be good.
Thank You Viktor. I am learning and improving every day!
Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Would itbhave been an economic proposition to hire in a professional to run that rental machine. The increase in productivity coupled with reduced rental charges could offset the labour cost. All your loyal subscribers will follow your road project with increasing interest. Today is a special day over here - Remembrance Day, which commemorates the fallen of all wars since WW1. Interestingly, historians consider the end of the First World War was the start of the US of A becoming the world's first superpower.
Thanks for the post Big R. All I can say is stay tuned. I hope my logic from this project will impress you! Joe
"I'm doing it old school" "Oh, that thumb!" -I love your humor, Joe!
I will be praying for the health and safety of your videographers! ;)
We are using the zoom lens for this one! LOL
i been telling all you youtube firewood guys for years that a mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb is the best machine for producing firewood, i produce 200 full cords a year just me and a mini excavator and a bunch of chainsaws and splitters and even a splitter that hangs off the excavator… trade the tractor in!
I am in agreement with you based upon just the machine but the cost of owning one is WAY too prohibitive for me. AND if this thing ever broke I'm sure you would be putting out big $$. For now I will stay with my tractor (under warranty LOL)
Regarding oil and filter changes on your trucks do not use the quickie oil change joints. Find a small repair shop that ideally is one or two mechanics as the quickie oil change joints utilize minimum wage personnel that are not professional. I made the mistake of going to one years ago with a brand new engine ( 5 liter ) and the idiot in the oil drain pit didn’t tighten the drain plug, just finger tight. 18 miles later the drain plug fell out at 65 mph on the highway and destroyed the engine then tried to weasel out of replacing the engine when I told him it was less than 1200 miles installed by my Lincoln dealer. I tried to get them to do the oil and filter but they didn’t have an open appointment for three days.
Food for thought
I hear you on that Jim. I usually just do it myself bc the Trucks are super easy to do but I usually use the local Ford dealer when they have a coupon. It is almost the same price for me to do it myself.
When I got my first backhoe the delivery guy showed me the controls. The fields were planted and nowhere to dig close by. So I tested it on our gravel drive by the barn. By the time dad got home from work I had a 6 foot deep hole 8 feet acrossed in the farm drive. Needless to say dad aske what the heck are you doing? I said well I had to test the machine and learn. It was the closest place I could dig. He was so mad. I covered it up and packed it in. I think he forgave me. Peace
LOL Great story Bill!! Memories for sure!
Next thing you know you will find a reason to buy one of your own.
Peeling an orange, any reason is a good one.
@@lifeiswhatyoumakeit5505 joe will want a better reason than that.
Sure would but no way could I spend $100k on a machine!
@@ohiowoodburner a backhoe for your tractor would be a great alternative.
Get good at operator this excavator Joe and next fall I will let you operate my combine lol. Have no doubt in you Joe at all that you will learn how to operate this excavator faster than it took you to learn to operate your tractor because now you already have the feel of operating hydraulics levers and the touch as well as the bigger equipment. In a few hours you will be a pro at it
Well.... Let's wait and see. LOL!!!
Funny intro!
Thanks! I had an old boss that never was able to have fun or let anyone around him enjoy themselves. It took me a while to figure out that he was so completely insecure in his position that if others around him were laughing and enjoying he felt that to be a threat to his authority. Some people can be weird.
You think that thing is heavy you should try my EC250 Volvo, it weighs in at 60,000 lbs
That would be amazing to play with Mitch!
Seat time joe, go out in the field and practice on something 🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
Yes, far away from anything with value! LOL.
Sunbelt rentals is a lot bigger than that
Excavators are a real handy thing to have around can’t wait to have one in my Arsenal lol ran them for 6 years for a company and now rent them for my landscapes company I think a skid steer will be first on my equipment list however !!
It is an amazing machine. I can't get over how powerful this thing is.
@@ohiowoodburner 5 tons are a great machine as they have a bit of weight behind them to preform bigger tasks but are small enough to do small tasks as well!!
Good project!! I wonder how much the final cost will be compared to just hiring a contractor. I predict 50% savings.
there is definitely a savings but I have already run into something that I am not sure how the contractor would have charged...
@@ohiowoodburner interesting topic for the next video!
🤣🤣🤣 you almost had me. happy digging. So after you get digging you won't want to give it back lol. my guess you will put it on your Christmas list LOL
LOL If you can lend me $100,000 I will buy it!
@@ohiowoodburner will monopoly money work? 😂😂😂😂. i hear ya. i just returned a 70Hp Kubota tractor with log winch back to the neighbor. some yr i would like to get both tractor and an excavator.
I use my bobcat e42 excavator
Pay all that money for 8 hours of use that time is spent learning Joe ain't let's dig need seat time
stay tuned Brad. I think you will like my approach
Should have called, 4500$ and we have a opening in April.😂
That is pricey! LOL
Good call, Joe! 10k# tracked machine with a 24" bucket
I hope you are right Jim! LOL
You were off to a good start with the world’s best wheelbarrow but I bet 20 minutes into it you will wonder if you will be done by spring.
Hang in there on the equipment. It takes some getting used to. I am still good for a few laughs when I get in the cab of any of those. I was fairly dangerous the first time I got in and that was in an open field!
I have no business operating one of these John LOL!!!
@@ohiowoodburner neither did I. Take it real slow until you get the hang of it, be patient, and make sure you don’t have any cameras rolling until you get real good at it.
I’m sure you Get a grip on it after some seat hours. What’s a metric? LOL. You guys got some silly units of measurement. Metric is the way to go😉.
LOL... I'm hearing you but all I can do is play along!
If you can put 4yds³ into your dump trailer (±15 excavator buckets), it's only 27 loads of dirt to dump.
Only?? LOL.
Each load gets you closer. This fix is permanent. Over time and convenience, this will be very cost effective.
Hurry Joe, The Winter Warlock is knocking on the door.
2" of snow on Sunday! Ugh
I love it for firewood
When i did my driveway, i just used the blade. Faster than using the bucket. Use your tractor to level out the stone.
I have been using both. I'm not good with either one LOL
@@ohiowoodburner lol. It takes a bit to get used to it.
With someone else's toy in the yard were you able to sleep at all the 1st night??
Oh the humor in this one🤣🤣🤣👍
This is a lot of fun to tinker with dan
Informative and funny. Thanks
Sure thing Jim. Don't look to me for advice on this machine. LOL... I am pretty lost at the controls !!!
Joe great comedy act your video's are awesome.
Glad you like them!
Are you enjoying the snow today. I'm going out and cut some firewood today.
Ugh... what is up with snow!??
@@ohiowoodburner it's Ohio for ya
You can do "er" Joe. Confidence is 95% of any battle. Once you establish your mojo, and I know you will, the driveway will be a piece of cake buddy.👍👊👍
Ummm.... Maybe not with me LOL. I'm pretty bad on this thing!
Big toys... Have fun with it!!
No joking there! this thing is amazing!
I was in your predicament many years ago before that type of excavator became a thing so I bought a very second hand backhoe to use on my property.
It took me about half an hour before I could dig a hole where I wanted it.
Within a day or two you won't just be using the controls as you were shown because you'll quickly graduate to performing multiple functions at once with each hand as you pull the bucket towards you while scooping with the bucket and slewing etc.
It quickly becomes a no thought process like changing gears in a manual car.
My backhoe was the best toy I ever owned even walking itself out of bog holes just using the buckets.
I hear you TB but I don't think being an operator is in my future. This thing is super complicated for me LOL
Remember material handling is material handling, whether firewood or muck from the driveway path. The less you handle and rehandle the better. I would suggest loading the muck out into the dump trailer and dump it somewhere out of the way. Also, my dad would yell at me about over extending or over travel on the hydraulic activated parts, only move them as far as you need every inch more is wasted time and effort. You got this.
That is the truth Joel. There is a lot of material that has to go somehwere!
You can do it Joe !!! Great video...
Not too sure about that Don LOL!!!
You be a equipment operator in no time.
I'm not too sure about that Danny LOL
What a hoot Joe! I hope you have some big rock coming and follow that with crush and run to fill in the spaces. Excited for you and keep up the humor Big Boy!
Never had a machine that required a password LOL!!!
Good morning Joe. A new skill is required but you will get there. Also put in drainage in the future for the back.
Water water everywhere Dave. LOL
Your funniest intro yet!🤣 Joe, those machines are great at pulling and lifting average size trees out of the woods as long as it's not to steep. Holds tree off the ground for limbing. But that's probably too much work for you processor guys!😁
LOL... A good processor can spoil you for sure Steve!
I am confident, you can do it Joe!
I'm glad you think so tom!!! LOL
Practice makes perfect Joe
I need more practice for sure Mark!
❤
Add to OWB's wish list.
Indeed John!
I think it's always fun to learn a new piece of equipment to a high levelof proficiency.
The key word is "high level." LOL. That may take a while!

Thanks Dave!
I can't wait to see it all come together! Wish you could post more than twice a week. Good luck with the project!
Thanks! Twice a week is enough for me LOL. It is difficult sometimes to film when I'm under time constraints!
YAY! Mini-digger!
I've been advocating their usefulness in woodyards for years.
As has been mentioned already, get in some time on it out in the open well away from anything of any value before you start into tricky stuff in target-rich environments.
Like all new machine operating, take your time and don't be afraid to stop and think before moving a control. After a little while, you'll be looking at what you're doing with the bucket and the control inputs will just 'happen' in your subconscious.
Slow and smooth, slow and smooth.
Have fun!
Great post Ivor. Target rich environment certainly makes sense to me LOL!!
Exactly Ivor , when Ben from surviving country life had his channel he was using a mini excavator for handling his firewood. He got very good at too .
👍👍
Thanks Tom!
