Toplane is just picking a traditional top laner first, then your opponent choosing a pick that is so oppressive that you cannot play. Then you still get ganked and your team will not come near top, while still losing their lanes.
This made me emotional. Always weak sided playing against ranged top-laner counter picks

Maining a champion gives you advantage that you know how to play your champion well and the person who counter picked you doesn't. Most people don't know how to play ranged top effectively and you can build full tank and run them down. Just need to not to die pre 6 or depending on the champion that you are playing.

@@geoDB. 115% ap ratio isnt crazy when u consider that u are never going to land q if using it on champions, aswell as if ap tf ever gets within 525 range of anyone lategame with a bluecard, he is going to die unless he is massively ahead.
The issue isnt 600 ap tf with deathcap lich stormsurge 1shotting sm1 4 levels under him, the issue is when tf completes kraken, not even fed, and starts murdering everyone at around 10 minutes into the game.
I main TF and usually I only play him AP MID and that's it folks but then I saw a new patch notes with them destroying AP ratios while previously making him viable on AD so I'm like "wtf should I do now"...

@alj77ase45 malphite full ap is unplayable for range in my experience if u want a more flexible blind. lvl 3 u have 2 points in q poke so strong and lvl 6 u almost oneshot. Just givin out tips. And obv cassio is always good top. Super strong champ.

A few issues with ranged top.
Fleet Footwork - It especially benefits ranged champions as it gives them much less down time, and SUSTAIN in lane which is purposefully not on many ranged champions for a reason. Ranged champions can typically auto attack you and get energy stacks more.. shockingly.
Ghost - 15 seconds on ranged champions.
Vayne - As a standalone champion she is quite overpowered statistically in any of her roles however the issue is that Kraken Slayer scaling off level gives her way less proclivity / inclination to ever need to build tons of AD (especially with percent hp true dmg, her q insane dmg buff and her mobility). She already went tank items like Jaksho, WHY DOES SHE HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO FUCKIN RANDUINS OMEN AND FUCKING JAKSHO. Why DOES HER damage never fall off PHREAK..!!!!! WHY???
Twisted Fate - They brought back the most unhealthy iteration of Twisted Fate for literally no reason because Phreak's trying to nostalgia bait us until we believe it.. permanent attack speed buff on a champion who builds adc items gee how could that go wrong with on HIT items.
Akshan - He's a lane bully who already had a incredibly strong early game which was oppressive and unbeatable for any melee champion. His Kraken Slayer spike with his double auto attack passive is now substantially stronger by around 20%. 20%!!!!! at level 8 and 9. Akshan as a champion benefits heavily from on hit synergy, wits end, whatever. He just does thousands of damage in items and has been a ridiculously overtuned champion for months on end now.

Akshan early game has been completely broken since like release. He can literally stand still and outrade the majority of melee champs at melee range (at level 1). His e damage is completely overtuned early even if it has a glaring weakness. His q is fine overall tbh but still a quite strong ability. Thank god his w and r don't do much early on but honestly that's just copium for the single most disgusting level 1-2 in the game. Let's not talk about what the W does later on because I'm gonna get angry. Now he gets these dumb hyper efficient items and his mid-game is no longer as skill expressive as it was. Terrible design by Riot fire the guy who made him immediately.
@@goldenarmour7975 akshan is very strong early but that comes at a cost. Many games you are required to snowball incredibly hard to have any impact on mid to late game. So many games I can go to 3-0 vs my laner only for my throwing team to still choke. He is really strong, but to use his kit to its full potential requires you to be very good at the the champion and macro. Sure he’s a bit too strong early, but at least it requires skill to carry games with him. Akshan mid is way better for the reason that you actually can impact the game via roaming. Top akshan just wins lane and then dies to the 0/10 nasus,ksante, etc late game
If there’s something to complain on about akshan, it’s about mid akshan not top
There are champs like tf who have as much dps but can also point and click cc you. Champs that have no cc in their kit are only broken if giga fed, specially someone as squishy as akshan. He’s kinda like yi in that aspect, no utility and completely useless if behind
Wouldn’t an equally fed mage who can one shot you just the same but also then stun you and escape safely be more annoying? Specially when every item they build has health attached to it
@edvinpavlenco I understand what you mean and I agree. I know he takes a lot of skill to carry with. Its just a little rant about the fact that hes way too strong early and an actual ape could play his early levels. I know hes reliant on roam which you cant do as much on top lane. But there is no difference between late game akshan mid and late game akshan top. He can roam as well as the other. That means that if they keep buffing his lvl 8-9 (as they are right now) all these issues go away because he keeps being strong at level 8-9. And its hard for most top laners to carry a bad team btw.

Vayne has about three champions that she has a win rate lower than 50% making her the best adc to not be countedpicked, people say she's got a high win rate because she's a counter pick champion, but i wonder if a counter pick champion is good against everything and every situation

Ignoring twisted fate who has been a design problem since his changes, I have noticed that the last few patches ranged toplaners are picked much more and I was always wondering why this suddenly happened.

My last ten games is me playing into these 5 exact champions:
Twisted Fate
Vayne
Smolder
Karma
Vladimir
None of these games were a fun laning phase experience since i like playing shit like sett and k'sante.
They know very well what they're doing. The problem is that they're not professional. You can see all the time when Phreak is talking "I wanted this" "someone wanted that", they just do what they like. And no one in the balance team likes toplane. This has been true forever. The only reason we get fighter/tank very short periods of dominance is bc they try to nerf damage so that their adc/mages don't die to assassins, and that spills to toplaners, but they quickly correct to make toplaners weaker than everyone else.
Ive been hardstuck silver gold for years and i could not BELIEVE i saw Riot nerf his AP damage. Even my tiny League brain was completely lost

You never see Bruisers in Mage and Adc lane, but you always see Mages and Adcs in Bruiser lane, seems fair.

It's not like he just popped in and can get a quick cancel, like the Smolder designer. Already having a petition WORK, for toplane to be CONSIDERED by Riot, would be a HUGE thing to do. Since they've repeatedly show to care so little.

Phreak played top a few times this season, he played AD Twisted fate top and vayne top :D The only meele champ he ever touches is Maokai tho, but it must be a coincidence that Maokai is the only meele champ that is consistently broken alongside all other 10 ranged champs
As a TF player he was fine with the AP buffs last season, everything past 14.1 was unnecessary.

I’ve given up on League. It’s the same rinse and repeat cycle of what character is selling skins which patch that riot over buff them to oblivion then nerf them. Idk how other players still play the game with that type of balancing mindset but I have mad respect
funny thing is instead of fixing top lane, they'll dump more damage into certain top lane champions to counter this.
You can't just fix an entire lane that's not how balance works.

4 years ago I started playing lol and I chose top because it's the lane where the tanks and fighters are, I always loved the melee vs melee concept but nowadays I feel less and less motivated to play top because it's become rare to see one melee opponent and more often a ranged champion, to me that's boring.
Where are the tanks? There are two tanks above 3% winrate and that is K'Sante (45% winrate, lowest in the game apart from 0.5% winrate ezreal support) and Malphite (hard counter-pick)
These changes just destroying top lane balance are exactly why I am not playing at the moment. Not sure I'll come back this split unless some major overhaul happens to make it more balanced for non-ranged champs.
i quit a bit ago cause it became so much damage and tankiness didn't matter at all. i like bruiser, juggernuat, tanks characters. the ranged top meta life sucks and im glad i stopped playing this game. its just not fun anymore. its grindy and toxic piss pit.

Riot doesn't have the balls to produce nerfs like marksmen gaining only 50% exp in toplane, when they are solo in a lane, etc. Things that actually takes care of the problem while protecting their holy quest to not nerf items on champs specifically.
thing js that forces play, it would make more sense to do the reverse where meleea get an increase, still making marksmen lower level without forcing them bot, just giving them a big disadvantage that is made up for through SKILL

Phreak since the item rework has been stuck in elo hell. Obviously he wasn’t shit at the game he just didn’t have time to grind elo, so he buffed the shit out of off meta TF build(now meta) to get out of elo hell but forgot to revert the buffs.
In my last 5 games, 4 of those were against a FULL RANGE enemy team. I was trying out Volibear. Lost all games and in some I could not get even one empowered W off.
basically "I used to stomp over any marksman on top with a bruiser/tank, but now i can't and it hurts so bad". Rito keeps game unballanced for a reason, to avoid stagnancy.
Ppl used to play ADC on mid lane in season 1,
there was a time when ap champs were ruling top lane (sion, ryze, vlad..).
We had an assassin top meta also.
And there was a time when Thornmail had 30% reflect from autos and sunfire could be stacked - tank meta.
The highest pickrate tank is 45% winrate K'Sante (emerald+)
In fairness, riot said they didn't realize AD TF was op until after the deadline to submit nerfs and AP TF was a bit strong so it needed nerfs. Also in fairness, they've shown they don't know how to nerf Maokai/Bard for 4-7 patches.
counter picks are so important now that they need to add a strategic pick extension for each team to mull over the 166 and growing champs to figure wtf counters current off meta bullshit.
its almost like an adc shouldnt have 2 sec stun autos. dps that competes with literally any lategame super scaling adc no mana issues, mixeddmg.

What I really don't like is that these wacko "what if" buffs like AD TF always happens to champions that already have a comfortable place in the meta rather than champions who could use a switchup. Like what if Corki went botlane again, or Maokai stops chain ccing you botlane and turns back into an ap bruiser toplane and whatnot rather than buffing Asol, Tf, Gragas etc who were already at around 51% wr before being buffed/adjusted
I played trundle into tf yesterday......... I had armor boots and 200 armor......gold card and i was dead before the stun ended.
if they make range champs play top, take your toplane champ to bot where you have a support, i know it sounds dumb but it worked out for me. I admit i do play in platin and it might not work in high elo.

i feel sometimes that one of the issues is that the trade off of picking a range toplaner is not big enough, why is a team allow to go with a tanky jungler and an oppresive toplaner and get away with it against a team with a dedicated toplane fighter or tank?
Just shows that melee champs are more suited for supportive roles these days with the changes they keep making. Cleaver now applies to range, ghost is equal on range and melee. Soon all lanes will be ranged and melee will be played only supp and jungle.
because this game doesn't have a turnrate, so ranged units can kite you for free without having to sacrifice DPS
@@goldenarmour7975 league have his roots on WC3, on said game melee champs tend to be strong, really strong, in early game and then transition to a more tanky support role for another ranged hero plus your army, in late game.
it's the same in league, since forever, otside patches where melee champs overperformed.

As a mid player I swear Akshan has been broken for the longest time, if you don’t get to counter pick against him prepare to get one shot, or you can play safe and he gets to free roam and kills your whole team.
I mean technically range champions are stronger than melee bruisers and tanks toplane.
The reasons they're not picked more are : -1 Malphite for adcs -2 Jg diff.
lanes are just more suited for ranged characters. It just so happened that when you're on an island it's really nice to be tanky and resilient but with the grubs change and all the buffs to ranged champs (ghost change + on-hit buffs) that do well on their own top lane has become safer and safer.

At least for twisted fate it is fair to say that he is annoying EVERY lane he is played in right now and in general is on most players' "nerf that shit" list.
That riot changed kraken so that it's not really better fitting botlaners (who tend to have good gold but lower level) but better fitting every other role also is a stroke of genious that peoably would need 4 brains working together to comprehend.

Rengar is made for toplane, despite rito intended to make him an assasin he do also very good with bruiser build, and i wouldn't cry about it - it's the only reason i still playing this game - ranged matchups are anything but fun for other melee toplaners
So are you saying that Riot is constantly meddling with the game with champion and item changes that create new metas and flavour of the month picks? They do this deliberately and call it 'creating engagement'. They aren't trying to move to a balanced game state, top lane or otherwise.

out of the top 7 I saw in the opening screen there were 6 out of 7 cheese picks and gragas a professional lane neutralizer. Top lane is doomed. When Sion has 47% winrate you know something is not right. Bro is literally dead dead.

Let's not pretend these issues started now. Let's also not pretend like there's only issues top lane (it's every role, yes, even jungle). While there has been metas where things have felt tolerable it has never been in a spot where you feel the game doesn't need big improvements made to it. That said, like I pretty much always say, I enjoy these videos where Riots incompetence shines. Thanks Shin. These videos are the only enjoyment I get from LoL these days.
Imagine making the minion being able to target ranged champ consistent, and doing dmg during laning phase as it should me, melee champs take so much dmg from casters like 35/40 dmg at second while trading, ranged just dont care

@@ITuberculosisI I know, but they would never nerf a Cassiopeia that has a 1% pickrate on the top when most play it on a mid where shes not very strong.
Characters like kayle, tf, vayne, quinn go into fleet and swiftness boots like the vast majority of range champs. The problem with overbuffed doran shield is that it will hurt some regular toplaners. Characters like akshan whose items got massive buffs should get a character nerf and that's it, because nerf on rune/boots will do the rest.
Vayne and tf are the worst cases because the whole characters are incredibly unfair.

You guys sometimes forget that top lane isnt the only role in the game.

I left because riots patches were pretty irrelevant and made the game stale and boring imo
I don't have an issue with this top lane meta per se, however the patches they do and how they target overpowered champs (e.g. tf, maokai) is just laughable and I'll leave this dogshit again if they don't step up in next 2 patches.

Its ok, riot has us covered! They admitted last patch that his AD are whacked, so in their (in) competent game design.......they nerfed his ap ratios -_- Now we even see him picked as ADC in pro play...
Shin, buddy, your first point was spoken like a major nothing burger. Yes, your point is hella valid, but you can't even articulate it properly. Ranged top lanes are hella oppressive early on unless they make mistakes. While those mistakes are common, they still beat you unless they make them over and over. AD Tf is a HUGE mistake, Vayne was a ranged top for a while, and Quinn is just....Quinn. the major issue is that top lane is no longer a bruiser role, but is becoming ADC 2.0. it's absolutely abhorrent, and I agree. But you gotta comment on the issue, not the bot lane mage stuff. Yes, mages were a problem bot lane in season 13, but they reworked shit to try and fix more then just that. They need to have a bruiser item to counter ranged comps just like they made an item to counter mages. Iceborn or FH aren't enough to counter TF or Vayne anymore with all of the items they can use to just get on hits constantly.
I get that it's getting worse, but are we really gonna say that this is in any way new? The only difference now is that power creep has hit critical mass and top lane is typically most affected by balance changes. Also the kraken slayer changes are like a 20-30 dmg buff at 1 item and unless you're not getting ad from runes or items it stays pretty much that for the whole game. 7-10 dmg per auto is ok, but it isn't this game breaking change that is causing the downfall of top lane. TF, vayne, and akshan are definitely the most capable of abusing the kraken changes, but even then it just makes them a little more dominant in a lane they don't lose to begin with. Top lane has always had a problem with counterpicks, its a lot of the reason why bruiser/tank balance is so dog shit and most top laners are either completely overpowered or never get picked. The lane itself is broken and needs to be fixed, AD TF is just strong in general and fits the typical archetype that does well as a counterpick vs immobile/weakside top laners, so I don't see how that is a top lane issue more than a typical balance oversight by riot. The hybrid/tank smolder build is a million times stronger than Tf in the top lane, and you didn't even mention at all, so this video just comes off as massive cope when champions like aatrox/ksante/fiora/riven are giga broken and have been for literal years with little exception. I get that it's frustrating to lose to new things being overpowered, but a lot of this isn't new and none of these champions are "good" top laners, they just abuse the fact that solo queue is volatile and practically coinflip that the enemy team doesn't understand how to play around the pick. A decen't lee sin/rengar/kha player will literally flip the lane on its head and after 3 ganks you literally can't lose if you haven't already inted the entire lane. Obviously you are right that these changes aren't the healthiest for the game but lets not pretend that top lane has ever been a healthy role to begin with.
