The Best Ward Eight - a Boston classic
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лип 2024
- Today we're making the Ward Eight! This classic drink hails from Boston, but recipes will differ. I like this recipe the best - just whiskey, citrus, and grenadine. Because the build is so simple, it's important to use fresh juice and a quality grenadine. I like a homemade grenadine in the Ward Eight because it has a tart pomegranate flavor that store bought grenadines tend to lack. Of course nothing's stopping you from using whatever grenadine you want, but I do think homemade is the way to go. I'll leave an easy recipe below so you can decide which is best for the Ward Eight! Cheers!

Grenadine is the key component here - be sure to use a quality syrup! You may have to adjust your ratios if using a store bought grenadine, as they tend to be less tart and sweeter. I hope you enjoy this drink! 🥃
Have to give this one a try. I just yesterday made grenadine based on your recipie in another episode and it turned out nice. Also, I just yesterday made my two first cocktails ever with a shaker. I made a Whiskey Sour and a Lemon Drop.
I made this! but i have yet to make your version of the syrup.
I can confirm it is more sweet than tart but not terribly so. In fact, if you lessen the grenadine any further the alcohol starts to take over a bit too much i feel. I would keep it at .5 oz.
I tried to adjust it for a bit more orange profile and replace .25 oz of the whiskey with orange liqueur. I think that also helped hide the alcohol a hair more but retained the profile and made the orange pop a bit more. i’ll try again with your syrup next time. I’ve made several others!
cheers!
How long does homemade grenadine last in the fridge? I’m tempted to make it but use so little of it regularly that I’m worried about it going bad
Good grief, I’ve been following this channel for the whole pandemic and just realized that your bar is practically in my neighborhood. Hope it opens back up soon so I can try some of these awesome cocktails made by the master!
OK
Any plan to reopen? Would also love to visit.
Been loving your Chanel over the pandemic. I recently moved from Chicago to LA for a job and watching this I realized I used to love going to your bar when I was a grad student living in Roger's Park. Going to Ward 8 was my introduction to classic cocktails and now your videos have been teaching me to make them 🙂.
I’m obsessed with your channel! I’d love to have a tutorial on your glassware and how you choose it for each drink. My wife would also love you see your take on a mojito.
This was one of the first drinks I made when I first turned 21 and has always been one of my favorites. I personally use crown because i don't like using my pricier whiskeys is mixed drinks and crown isn't too expensive yet has a good flavor that still stands out when mixed. When I want something to sip on a bit longer, I like to pour it into a larger glass with 7 up or Sprite. I found mixing it with soda keeps all the complex smokey flavors of the whiskey while mellowing it out significantly as well, which can be a good way to introduce someone to whiskeys, or sharing some of the flavors with someone who normally won't drink any.
How does this channel not have 1M+ subs? Such great content, Anders.
🥂 New Rule Suggestion: no video can end until the drinks are down the hatch!! I’d happily watch a few more minutes of you & Az polishing off whatever it is you just made! 🤣
😂 😂
I agree!!!!
Plain simple deliciousness!
Absolutely! Cheers, my friend!
Interesting sidebar. In "The Verdict" (1982) James Mason, as Boston attorney Ed Concannon, told his secretary, as he left with his entourage, "If anyone calls, we'll be at Locke Ober's."
🎉
This is my favorite cocktail! Not only is the taste great, but I love that all the ingredients keep for so long.
I'm very glad I made that grenadine from scratch. Over the weekend I've made up several of your recipes with it for me and my wife and I couldn't be happier. My ward 8 turned out fantastic, with all the same ingredients.
One of my favorites from this channel! Excellent on a hot summer's day. Cheers!
I’m having so much fun trying all of these amazing cocktail recipes! I’m looking forward to serving up some fancy concoctions for my next party! Cheers 🥂 and thank you Anders!
In the past 2 years I’ve been watching many cocktail channels but have settled on one. Keep up the great work, Az and Anders!
Anders: Today I'm gonna make a Ward Eight!
Me: *SOBS*
Miss you and Ward Eight so much!
Miss you too!! We may not be at the bar, but this drink will definitely help. Cheers! 🥃
Made-along with the video, here in April 2023. Used bottled-in-bond bourbon instead (didn't have rye). It is an excellent drink, a bit sour, very citrusy... I will immediately add this to my 10-drink rotation for when friends come over. It will work ESPECIALLY well for those who want the liquor but say "not too boozy." Powerful without knocking their heads off. Great! Thanks!
Looks good. Can’t wait to try. 😋
Was looking for cocktail to drink and just started watching random videos on your channel. Made this one and it is just outstanding! Thank you for this video! Cheers!
Another great episode, my friend! I would love to have one Ward Eight prepared by you in Ward Eight. I promise I won't be the same as the one at the end of the episode 😆
You'd always be welcome, Kevin! I would actually love to see you order a drink at the bar the way I did at the end 😂
I find your channel very relaxing. It helps after a hard day of work, even if I don't drink all these amazing cocktails.
Holy cow, that looks delicious! Will be making one this evening for sure!! Thanks for the great videos!!
Cheers, Gene! Hope you enjoy it!
This has become my go to as of late this drink is perfect
So easy to make and sounds amazing. Can't wait to try this. Cheers Anders.
Gotta love simple AND tasty - cheers to you, Carl!
Seen it - mixed it -liked it! 👍🏻
I greatly enjoy your videos! I look forward to seeing you in person soon.
Thanks!
Todays years old, just made my first Ward Eight! Quite enjoyed it!
Just made this after finding your video, great great cocktail! Did same ratios with store bought syrup and you are right it may need a tweak.. Great content as always, cheers!
Love these. One of my early favorites.
Simply delicious! Cheers to you, Pete!
Thanks for another great recipe and video! Cheers my man!
Thank you so much! Cheers to you!! 🥃
I don’t know if I’m jamming to the perfect music playing my best air guitar 🎸 or paying attention to the great creations you build. But I watch every video hundreds of times so we good. Lmao 😂. Thanks 🙏
Love your channel and can't wait to be back at Ward 8! I have really missed Tiki Tuesdays ;)
Yay, Anders! The videography is as beautiful as the cocktail you made. Cheers!
Thank you, Ronnie! Cheers!! 🥃
i just made these tonight and i have to say it’s probably the best drink i’ve ever made… the homemade grenadine MAKES it!!!
Yes... the more often I play the vid, the more I like it. Thumb up.
Nice drink and I love the presentation
Thank you so much! Cheers!!
Made this one tonight, using grenadine per the recipe. It was delicious!!
Great cocktail Cheers!
Thanks, Robin - cheers to you!
New subscriber! Love your videos, can’t wait to try this cocktail!
Thank you so much, Judith! Hope you enjoy the cocktail - cheers!
You rock!
I've just properly gotten into making cocktails, and this is my favorite of the very many cocktail-related channels. Thanks for all the great info!
Thank you for the kind words, Patrick! So happy you're enjoying the videos. Cheers to you!
@@AndersErickson hell yeah, man. Btw, just made an Old Fashioned following your method. Turned out great.
I was there chatting up Jeremie about my new rum distillery a few weeks ago 👀
Great video ANDERS!!!!! I've never had the pleasure of enjoying one of these, but that WILL change!!! This looks marvelous!!!! CHEERS!!!!!
Love to hear that, Tim! It's such an easy build and if you like a whiskey sour, I think you'll love the Ward Eight! Cheers my friend!
Anders this drink made our weekend. I finally made your grenadine syrup recipe, but with keto sweetener because I am low carb. Absolutely delicious. You are right about the sweet/tartness coming through the bourbon. I notice this is one of very few videos where you finish the cocktail on camera. Cheers
Nice 👍🏼 STUFF ‼️
Looking forward to tasting one soon ...at the bar! 🤞🏻Cheers!
I agree! Hope you enjoy the weekend, Tim - cheers!
😂😂😂. I just love watching you!🥰
I happened to be in Boston and saw this place and paid a visit. Had this cocktail. It was very good. Anders this is an experience I wouldn’t have had if not for this channel. Thanks!
Sad to break the news, but Anders will have been referring to the Ward Eight in the Chicago area.
Beautiful cocktail I'm definitely going to make this tonight
Wonderful! Cheers to you!
Heck yeah! Another Rye whiskey drink to try. Thanks Anders!
Andres, I have to try this drink. Looks good! Keep these drinks coming! Thanks!
That Whisky Sour comparison helps keep it easy to remember. Looking forward to trying this out.
I hope you enjoy this drink, Cristopher! Cheers to you!
I just made it with True grenadine store bought and it was fantastic. Amazing drink. Need to try with your grenadine. Love these videos. Ive practically bought every Amazon item you have. Lol!! Used Nick n Nora though.
Great drink. And I love the new graphics & angles, Anders & Az!
So glad I clicked the thumbnail. New recipe for the books
Cheers, Stephen! Appreciate it - enjoy the weekend! 🥃
Awesome snap ! Love a whisky sour, got the ingredients, gonna give this a go right now.... Cheers Anders 👍
Wonderful! No time like the present - happy Friday, Gordon!
Just made a couple of these - THANK YOU! I love the drink. I don't have Rittenhouse so I used Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey. Excellent flavors.
I am chomping at the bit to see you guys once again, you were the last people we saw before everything shut down. I MUST know when things reopen.
I completely understand! Wish I had news for you on the status of the bar. In the meantime, I hope well, and always appreciate the support - cheers!
Had my first at Merchant in Madison, Wisconsin, a few weeks ago while on a mini vacation. I like your recipe; I used the Small Hands Grenadine again, and added 1/4 Simple Syrup to add just a bit more body. I like it! And way too easy to down.
Good stuff! Something new to add to the home bartending arsenal. Thank you! And greetings from India!
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy the cocktail - cheers to you!
makes me miss deep ellum in allston, as much as i love ward 8's, theirs was killer. RIP DEEP E
I was scanning your channel, and after watching the video, realized I have a Blood Orange and Lemon tree with ripe fruit. Combined with Grenadine and Sonoma Whiskey Rye it is very refreshing.
omg, that was so good. I'd been making New York Sours for a while. This has all the same complexity, without having to buy Bordeaux wine. You have no idea how many oranges I was throwing out after skinning them for orange twists on Old Fashioneds. I tried this with Old Forester 100 proof rye, and again with Wild Turkey 101 bourbon. They both turned out great. Note, I was using home-made grenadine, but the simple version, without pomegranate molasses and rose water.
The Ward Eight is an interesting drink, I will have to test this out versus an original!
Absolutely! I always love a good comparison - cheers, David!
I really like this drink. Thanks to you I put my friends on to new drinks and I get two thumbs up most of the time. They did not care for the Bloody Ceasar. Lol
Amazing video Anders as always…
I use a teaspoon of honey syrup in my ward 8 as a secret ingredient next to grenadine haha. It truly makes it special in my opinion.
Have a fabulous weekend bro 😎
Thanks, David! Love the honey syrup idea - totally see that working nicely. You have a great weekend as well!!
I just discovered this channel, and had to comment, from the pronunciation I keep hearing “War Date” as the cocktail name.
I like to make it with a really nice scotch. Great drink!!
This is very close to a blinker, which is also very good
You're absolutely right! Cheers!
I love these pre-prohibition cocktails! Ned me some grenadine to make this, looks really good 😋 🥃🥃
With the homemade grenadine in this one you can't go wrong - cheers!!
Very nice. I love watching Andres' videos. I am wondering what kind of cocktail glass is this? I wanna get one.
I have not tried that yet, but I will use the homemade grenadine syrup. I made some pink ladies today, and with the homemade grenadine they are complex and nice.
gorgeous 🙏🏾🙏🏾
New subscriber here! I really hope your channel blows up! Great content, high production value, attractive host... you have all the ingredients for a successful channel!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate the support and kind words. So happy you're enjoying the channel! Cheers!
Looks like it's time to make some grenadine and try this a few times!
Definitely worth it if you do - the homemade grenadine shines in this one! Cheers, John!
Haven't heard of this one before. It sounds great. Hope to also try one at Ward Eight someday!
Best part of watching all these channels is the great perspectives and recipes. Keeps me on UA-cam constantly
I'd happily make one for you, Mark! Cheers!
OK so now I need to go back to Chicago just to try that bar.
There's so many reasons to come back to Chicago 😂 Cheers to you, Jeff!
YESSSSSSSSSSSS! I'm def number 1!!!!
Cheers, Tim!! 🥃
Hey Anders, what about the cocktail glass, link to it? Love the channel
Oh man. What a fantastic cocktail! My coupes are a bit larger so I upped the recipe by 50%. Gotta be careful with this one though eh? One of those that is hard to put down...
And I picked up a bottle of that Rittenhouse. Pretty damn good and well priced! Cheers from PDX!
You sound like Rick or Morty. Guess which one. Excellent channel by the way. Perfect presentation.
Hey Anders, I love margaritas, do you have any suggestions on any other cocktails to try?
Is this the first video you did that you actually capture you finishing it (orange and all!)? I’ve seen lots of sampling, but few where you’re taking the last sips! Must be really good!
A corrupt politician ? Voter fraud? That’s just crazy talk, that would never happen 🤥. Great video as always good Sir, always enjoy you. Keep up the great work!
Oh, this is a delicious cocktail!! OJ is tasty at 1/2 ounce - I don't love OJ in cocktails (maybe I started out with trying cocktails where OJ overpowered the cocktail? but it sometimes takes away from a cocktail, just for me - I know many people love using OJ) - but at this small amount it actually blends beautifully and it's refreshing!! The Rye is my way to go and I love Rittenhouse - gorgeous Rye - delicious flavour!! Balanced with the lime, this is a spectacular cocktail. I love sipping this one. This is a hit!! :-) I am not at all surprised this libation is such a huge fave, Anders!! :-) Terrific video!!
I'm right there with you regarding the orange juice! It can be a tricky ingredient - it wants to take over. But it works here, and the homemade grenadine is a must! Thanks, Christine! Cheers to you!
@@AndersErickson Yes!! Perfectly put!! We agree 100%!! Have a wonderful week, Anders!!
@Anders what brand of pomegranate juice do you have recommend? Been using POM but curious
Damn it. Buzzed on your 12 mile limit recipe. No binge watching your channel.
Anders....what is the nomenclature for the type of glass you used in this video and where did you source it? Thanks and I love your channel!!!
Thanks! This is call a 5.5oz Embassy Footed Rocks Glass, and it's made by Libbey. You can find them online, but looking right now it appears only in larger quantities (at least where I am). Good luck - it's a great glass!
Hi Anders, love your videos. What is the tattoo on your upper arm? Looks really cool. Cheers.
Thank you so much! The tattoo is a bear and a birch tree - he goes with me wherever I go 😂
Great video!
What is that glass wear called?
This glass is called the Embassy Footed Rocks glass - it's made by Libbey. The one I have is 5.5oz, but they do come in other sizes. Cheers!
@@AndersErickson Thank you! 🥃
Gotta snag a black on black Ward 8 shirt! 🦁
I agree, they're pretty nice! 🦁
I really like these low stemmed glasses, what are they called?
This one's called an Embassy Footed Rocks Glass - it's made by Libbey. They come in different sizes, but mine is a 5.5oz glass. Cheers!
We miss you too! Any idea when we’ll get to drink with you and Cody again?
Thanks, Michele! No word on the bar, but hope you're well. ❤️
I got a friend from NH (but very close to the border with Boston) coming over to my bar here in Rotterdam, so I’ll definitely make this drink for him!
One question tho: is a ward similar to like a district, borough or neighbourhood? And in that case, what’s a ward boss? (Sounds kinda maffia-ish)
I feel an experiment coming, a side by side experiment - (American) bourbon, rye, Irish, scotch, Canadian, Japanese and Australian
Get out of my head 😂 I like how you think, Nicholas - cheers!
Ditto on all the good comments below! But I also have a question. I did not see a link where I can get the bottles and spouts you put your lemon juice and your orange juice in? Please share.
You should try to do a few more collabs, your style of videos and your personality would go very well with, for example, How2Drink or Cara behind the bar!
Appreciate you saying so - we'll see what the future brings!
Is Anders wearing a Ward 8 (the bar) shirt? Lol im probably crazy but i swear i saw the bar's logo on his shirt 🤣😅 Well, crazy or not, Great video as always! Cant wait to try this tonight 😊
Good eye! 👀👍
Oh phew! im not crazy 😅
Is this freshly squeezed juice or orange juice like a store bought OJ?
I want my Ward 8 back!! Whaaa! 😪 Nice impression of me at the end! Lol. Miss all of you. ❤️ Awesome vid you two! 👍🤘
Brad! I'm so happy you could see it was you I was trying to portray at the end there 😂 Hope you're well, my friend!
I’m going to use Jamison and call it a Ward 2.
Hi Anders,
I really like your channel, you're a real pro and I learned a lot from you.
I came up with an original cocktail, I call it "Kokodrill". What do you think about these specs:
1oz Pink Gin (I use Beefeater, with a hint of strawberry)
0.5oz Aperol
1oz Grapefruit juice
0.5oz Lemon juice
0.5oz Grenadine
0.5oz Aquafaba
Dry shake, then shake with ice
Serve straight up
Garnish: grapefruit twist
This looks delicious and refreshing, Moshe! I'll have to give it a try, and Kokodrill's a fun name! Thanks for sharing your recipe - cheers!
