I face palmed so hard when you tried the stew, the consistency is supposed to be like that you serve it in a bowl or straight out the bag. But keep up the good vids.
Hi Edward Birks (re: comment about dates) I can't reply directly to your comment for some reason, but I think they get around that 'decade bug' because they know there'll be no MREs that old in service circulation. It only becomes a factor to those purchasing old MREs on the civilian market, but then the bag style and menu contents can tell you which year they came from. MREinfo.com has great detail on the menus over the years, so pretty easy to cross-reference contents with the info on their site. Cheers.
The name brand of the pretzel cheese things is combos. When you had something watery like that we would have but the combos in the stew aswell and it woulda given it a bit of a kick too.
Kiwi Dude They are also available with a filling of regular American cheese that would be very similar to the regular MRE cheese pack, cheese pizza, pepperoni pizza, and the nacho flavors you had there. They formerly used to be available with peanut butter, which was even better.
the nacho cheese pretzels are also called combos. they are sold in the states like bags of chips. you can get them in a variety of flavors. pizza, nacho cheese etc..
Hey Kiwi Dude! You just earned my like and subscribe. First of all, I didn't realize, nor did I think of what the men and women in the Army ate and how good it was. This is quite a cool video. It seems to me that this would be absolutely great to take camping! Hope you have a great day and you better keep making this videos!

@@Vizr. nah dude, deadass that shit ain't Mexican, it doesn't matter what part of Mexico ur from, everyone knows how to cook a good Mexican plate and that ain't it
I'm not sure if someone has already commented on this... Those pretzels you had in this MRE are, as you had stated, common in the US. The "regular consumer" brand name is "Combos". The ones in the MRE you had are probably made at the same plant as the brand name ones, just put into MRE type packaging.
I just tried this menu myself today. Mine was packed in 2013 and was nearly exactly the same as yours. The only differences were that I had peanut M&M's and orange drink powder. But what I though was really interesting was that my chicken stew was no where near as watery as yours. It came out about the same consistency as the rice. Maybe there was a slight recipe change to make it easier to eat in the field. But yours looks a lot tastier to me.
Kelly Smith Quite a tasty MRE this one. I've found that variances in entrée (and cheese spread) consistency usually comes down to age, storage temperature, and final heating temperature. It can also be impacted by physical storage, as loose MRE's constantly on the move (such as those stored in a car or truck) can be prone to having the solid ingredients in the entrée disintegrate into the sauce. Rations that contain cans instead of retort pouches typically provide a more consistent experience.
You know when doing 2 items in the FRH that you put one in the bag and one under the bag inside the box. that way enough water gets to the element and it heats both very well.
Ah yes the MRE rice blocks! I don't know what it is but I just call it hardened cheese that you have to re-melt. If you don't get it hot enough it'll be all blocky and the ingredients will taste different. I usually put it in a pot of boiling water for the rice. Cooks the hell out of it! All nice and melted together
This is from a bit after my time in terms of content, but your comment about it not being so spicy...I'd love to try some Mexican MREs (if they don't just get them as subsidy from the 'States). BUT.. Much of Mexican cuisine is not the least bit spicy. In fact much is sweet, savory or downright bland but still somehow tasty (the magic of mestizo cooking). I'd go with the other commenter and put some of that cheese spread in with the lot of it and stir the rice, stew and half the cheese spread together to make it more spicy. Yould even go crazy and use an unused Tabasco from another MRE (I always kept a few spairs) and kick it even more. Loving all these vids! Cheers mate.
I always had an interest in military rations, but working with the Navy in the late 90's really spurred it on. Finding MRE reviews on UA-cam was the final straw that tipped me into making the first video, and then it's all history from there. I'd still be eating the rations without making videos, but each one is interesting and has its own story to tell, so it kind of feels wrong to not share the experience nowadays.
Kiwi Dude thats pretty cool, what kind of work with the navy did you do? ive personally never worked in or with any military forces but mres are really good for camping trips or long boating trips! lol
I was a communications tech at the time, working on structured cabling, networks etc.. and yes - MREs are the perfect addition to any camping or boating trip. Beats soggy sandwiches any day of the week! ;-)
I've always been interested in rations and watched many great video reviews out here on UA-cam. A while back the planets aligned and I found myself with a new camera, tripod, and some MREs sitting in the cupboard. I thought "What the heck" and filmed a video. The rest is history. It's been a fantastic journey trying rations from all over the world and interacting with awesome people through comments and messages.
Alejandro Gomez That's what I love about MREs, you never really know 100% what you're going to get (unless you spoil the fun and look up the menu items).
Alejandro Gomez The U.S. also have 'T' rations, which are large trays containing the shelf-stable main meals for feeding larger groups. If you ever wanted to have a ration party T-rats would be the go ;-)
Actually I never was with the German army and I never actually ate any MRE in real life (I often do so in DayZ, though), but somehow I enjoy seeing your videos and those of gshultz and gundog. Maybe I´ll give MREs a try, most of them seem to be quite yummy.^^
you and gschultz9 ,make the best MRE reviews i ever seen on youtube and gschultz9 puts the contents in the description can you do that to for the MREs ?
If u mix the crackers, cheese, combos, rice, and stew all together in one container. It is heaven in a meal no joke! No salt or pepper needed! Ur welcome 😉
Kiwi dude we have those pretzels at pak n save usually in the bulk food bucket section where they have the bulk nuts and stuff, but they have peanut butter in the middle of them not cheese. Still yum though!
Hi there, up until recently there was a reasonable supply on TradeMe, but that chap (who's also a subscriber) has stopped bringing them in. If you're in N.Z, eBay would be your best bet. Cheers.
The All Around Gamer Grassdew I haven't tried all menus, but so far the only one that I'd go out of my way to avoid is 'Pork Sausage with Gravy'. Safe bets are the Chili & Mac, Roast Beef with Vegetables, Southwest Beef Black Beans' and most others I've reviewed apart from the Pork Sausage. If you're thinking about international, it's hard to go past a French 24hr RCIR.
Kiwi Dude Yeah I gotta agree. I think the issue with that MRE is that generally pork sausage with gravy, served in the southern US is usually with like, a fluffy biscuit or two, cracked open and a small ladleful of gravy over the top. So it's basically a quickbread that's hot and warm, and I don't think MRE's really have an option for that? There's the whole wheat snack bread but the pork sausage with gravy still can't be really poured over the top of them, and also, that's way too much for a single serving in the retort package.
I got the same one, same year too only problem is its 2016 and its been 4 years and they have a max shelf life of 5 at 50°F and I doubt that they where kept at 50°F the whole time. Its probably still good but wont taste as fresh.

Ginelle Simmons They do, and there's a neat MRE shelf life calculator on MREinfo.com on the front page (bottom left) that can give you an estimated remaining shelf life. Unfortunately, most people buying MREs on the civil market can only guess at the average temperature a ration has been stored at prior to their ownership. My personal feelings (so please don't take this as a guideline) are that I'm generally: 100% comfortable with 0-3 years 75% comfortable with 3-5 years 25% comfortable with 5-7 years Anything older than about 5 years should receive a lot more scrutiny in ensuring it looks, smells and tastes o.k before ingesting large amounts.
So i decided to try this since i bought a couple of mre's i am currently trying the chicken stew i got some of the same stuff but i didnt have the mms. I got cran-raspberry energy bar, hot chocolate drink and the mango peach applesauce so mine was a bit different P.s. ive never ate mre's before
Hey next time you get an american mre with cheese spread or the jalapeno spread mix it with the meal like this one to make the meal more flavorful. This idea is from a former army person who has eaten plenty of these meals. instead of kneading the cheese put it in the frh to melt it and it will mix better.
Well damn, I wish I could have watched this video BEFORE cooking my MRE. Did what you did with the FRH and two entrees, but I guess the heating element was too old or not enough water got in (Or that the heating carton wasn't angled too well). Ended up having to boil the two entrees.
***** It's always a struggle heating two items in the U.S. FRH's. I've never had both come out piping hot, but it does make me concentrate a little more to ensure that the water reaches all of the pads. Mealspec heaters on the other hand will deal to two entrees and more. They're a blast to use too.
Im in the u.s military have eaten oh so to many mre's but to go along with your heating of two packs of food the best way is to use the brown pack that the mre's come in and just place the food and heater in side like a sandwitch with a good bit of water
Ben Sippel The next MRE I review that contains an entree and a side will be getting this treatment :-) What do you do with the opening on the bag? Fold it over? Do you put anything on top of the bag to hold it down?
Kiwi Dude just lean it on a rock or something :). You can fold the top over but it will still cook it with the top open. Pretty much the more water the frh soaks up the hotter it gets so give it a lil shake to really get it wet.
Kiwi Dude the fudge brownie and the cinnamon roll taste the best heated up. And the Apple Ranger bars if came across any of those yet pretty much the baked good typed snacks. Heating the cheese or peanut butter in the FRH with the food also makes it soft and pliable
Mallvoy eBay is an easy place to start, but if you're in the U.S. there's a few more options such as Army surplus stores, armygear.net and many others.
Mallvoy eBay is probably your best bet. Purchasing by the case is the most cost-effective method. I've had whole cases of 12 landed for as low as $120 NZD.
at first these panic packs look pretty nasty and not close to most meals but then i start to imagine myself lost and missing for what seems weeks. all my clothes are torn and dirty, water bottles are empty and already drank 1 cup of my urine out of paranoia of not having any other form of liquid. all hope is lost and my stomach is literally boiling with all the stomach acid and no food. then i see this MRE pack and my mouth begins to water. sweet sweet food who cares what it looks like i want it i need it i will FUCKING KILL FOR ONE IF I HAVE TOO!
if you live in the states army surplus stores and survival stores often have them. you can also check eBay and there are lots of other websites. Xmre is a commercial version that are almost identical to military but have more shipping options more menus (same components different configurations) and are more likely to be fresh or within 2 years old.
I tried SoPakCo, Sure-Pak's civilian MRE version of this entree: Mexican Style Chicken Stew. I loved it, but they really skimp you on the civilian MREs. No side dish, and the accessories pack is pretty mediocre. Otherwise, it was a great intro to MREs. Next up, I'm trying the Pork Sausage with Gravy which is an actual military MRE this time.
Daniel Riley Meal Kit Supply and XMRE make rations that are almost identical to the genuine article. Sure-Pak and Ready Meal sit a tier below in terms of price and quantity (I do prefer Sure-Pak in this bracket though). As for the Pork Sausage with Gravy, have you purchased it yet?
Kiwi Dude XMRE is probably going to be the next civilian MRE I sample. It looked like they had some quality product to offer. I may try Meal Kit Supply in the near future. Yes, just got in the Pork Sausage with Gravy yesterday. Its date is stamped 1178, so still relatively fresh. Probably going to try it out in the next day or so. Eventually, I might even make a video as I enjoy trying out various food oddments. Great videos, btw.
Still amazes me why they put American chocolates like M&M's in MRE's. They melt easily even if still packaged in extreme heat; Afghanistan, Iraq or even my own native State Arizona, USA. Skittles might be a better choice. The wizard of OZ is a cool reference.
mfkamin78 The M&M's can be a little hit and miss as to how well they last in MRE's. I've seen some packs that were perfect after 10 years, and others that were cracked and pale after just 3 years. I've never seen Skittles show any signs of age.... yet.
But Kiwi dude, the MRE that you've had, haven't come from Afghanistan or Iraq! So you wouldn't really know what would the very same MRE taste and feel in the hot scorching desert! I think Mfkamim78 seems to be right as skittles are too dense to become a watery mess!
circuscase I know they're tough and have very long legs, but nuke, bio, and chemical proof.... Hmm. If someone in the know can confirm that - MRE's just jumped up a respect notch in my books!
Its true unless its not sealed properly... But the food has packages themselves which are chem/nuclear environment/biological weapon proof and also germ and water proof not fire proof prob just resistan cause of the tough pacaging
As a person who lives in Kansas I would like to inform you that it's not at all like The Wizard of Oz. Saying Kansas is like The Wizard of Oz is like saying England is like it is in Harry Potter and we all know that isn't true.
Hi Lily, never fear, I know Kansas isn't like the 1930's Wizard of Oz portrayal. Just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor. Didn't mean to offend anyone from Kansas! :-)
"maybe you guys in the states know them well" yes we do we call them dog treats because iv never seen those on the shelf advertised for human use. dogs however...
hello again kiwi dude the cheese filled pretzels have a name brand called combos here in the states they make a jalapeno cheese flavor and buffalo chicken flavor that I think if you ever got the chance to try you would really like them.

For the dating on the package how do you determine if the 2 means 2012, 2002, or 1992 etc.?
Because the main entrees change every few years. And the packaging changes once in a while too.

One of my favorites. Lacking punch though
The Fruit drink said made in Kansas City, MO, which is short for Missouri lol! I know it's confusing to have Kansas City in Missouri...
Haha, thanks! And sorry to anyone in Kansas for the mistake. I just couldn't resist chucking in the Dorothy clip ;-)
Haha, no hard feelings, a lot of people in the US don't know it's in Missouri!
So i decided to try this since i bought a couple of mre's i am currently trying the chicken stew i got some of the same stuff but i didnt have the mms. I got cran-raspberry energy bar, hot chocolate drink and the mango peach applesauce so mine was a bit different
P.s. ive never ate mre's before
The pretzel with cheese in middle are called combos
robert spencer I wish we had them here!
Hey next time you get an american mre with cheese spread or the jalapeno spread mix it with the meal like this one to make the meal more flavorful. This idea is from a former army person who has eaten plenty of these meals. instead of kneading the cheese put it in the frh to melt it and it will mix better.
Matthew Knittel Thanks. I keep meaning to put the cheese in the FRH, but always forget. I'll make a point of doing that next time.
Hmm yea mine was from the Wornick company and everything is the same but not double bagged
Mexican style chicken I was waiting to see mole rojo, rice with tomato, black beans and tortillas
i been to mexico and most of chicken stew is watery though still tasty
I live in the states and i have never ever heard of putting nacho cheeze inside of pretzels... welp now i can go see if i can find some.
They're called Combos apparently. I wish they had them here in NZ!
Im in the u.s military have eaten oh so to many mre's but to go along with your heating of two packs of food the best way is to use the brown pack that the mre's come in and just place the food and heater in side like a sandwitch with a good bit of water
Ben Sippel Thanks for the tip! So you mean just remove the heater pad from the FRH bag and put it into the brown MRE bag instead?
Kiwi Dude yes and also a lot of the snacks taste good if u heat them up to
Ben Sippel The next MRE I review that contains an entree and a side will be getting this treatment :-) What do you do with the opening on the bag? Fold it over? Do you put anything on top of the bag to hold it down?
Kiwi Dude just lean it on a rock or something :). You can fold the top over but it will still cook it with the top open. Pretty much the more water the frh soaks up the hotter it gets so give it a lil shake to really get it wet.
Kiwi Dude the fudge brownie and the cinnamon roll taste the best heated up. And the Apple Ranger bars if came across any of those yet pretty much the baked good typed snacks. Heating the cheese or peanut butter in the FRH with the food also makes it soft and pliable
Where can you get these MREs?
Mallvoy eBay is an easy place to start, but if you're in the U.S. there's a few more options such as Army surplus stores, armygear.net and many others.
I'm in Australia, any chance getting U.S. MREs?
Mallvoy eBay is probably your best bet. Purchasing by the case is the most cost-effective method. I've had whole cases of 12 landed for as low as $120 NZD.
I'm actually having a trouble finding US MRE case that ships to Australia :/
Mallvoy It's one of those things, just keep checking each day and pounce on them when they pop-up ;-)
I’m eating this while watching this 😎
at first these panic packs look pretty nasty and not close to most meals but then i start to imagine myself lost and missing for what seems weeks. all my clothes are torn and dirty, water bottles are empty and already drank 1 cup of my urine out of paranoia of not having any other form of liquid. all hope is lost and my stomach is literally boiling with all the stomach acid and no food. then i see this MRE pack and my mouth begins to water. sweet sweet food who cares what it looks like i want it i need it i will FUCKING KILL FOR ONE IF I HAVE TOO!
Those pretzel things are called "Combos" in the US maybe u can find them
I want to try one of these!.. How do I get one?
ebay amazon xmre.com or a military surplus store
Im thinking about joining the air force... And thanks Mcbain12
Site down for the count, bro.
if you live in the states army surplus stores and survival stores often have them. you can also check eBay and there are lots of other websites. Xmre is a commercial version that are almost identical to military but have more shipping options more menus (same components different configurations) and are more likely to be fresh or within 2 years old.
they're good, I like mres
alizarin alexander I agree!
No dude, that 2053 code meant 203rd day of 2013, not 53rd day of 2012. :) Like it really matters, cuz it's an MRE after all...lol
He does know they eat it out of the bags and everything? Not on a platter
are u Shaun mellet
The pretzel thing is called a combos
R Ostrander Thanks, they were great.
Daniel Riley Thanks. I'll be really interested to hear what you think of the Pork Sausage with Gravy. Let me know how you get on.
5:02 that’s what she said. Story of my life
Still amazes me why they put American chocolates like M&M's in MRE's.
I think Mfkamim78 seems to be right as skittles are too dense to become a watery mess!
nobody ever heats the jalapeno cheese spread. why?
Jozef T I'm not sure. Most of the time I just forget to heat it. It tastes just as good to me at room temp.
they look like combos 7:20
@1:14- We were told in Basic Training that the MREs were nuke, bio, and chemical proof. What do you think Kiwi Dude? I am a bit skeptical.
circuscase I know they're tough and have very long legs, but nuke, bio, and chemical proof....
Sunyoung Cho That's awesome. Makes me appreciate them even more :-)
whats Moist Towelette?
wet towel
As a person who lives in Kansas I would like to inform you that it's not at all like The Wizard of Oz. Saying Kansas is like The Wizard of Oz is like saying England is like it is in Harry Potter and we all know that isn't true.
Hi Lily, never fear, I know Kansas isn't like the 1930's Wizard of Oz portrayal. Just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor. Didn't mean to offend anyone from Kansas! :-)
Just got this one
Hey also wanted to let you know it's about 120$ US to send a 2 pound package your way. That is quite a bit, let me know.
Ouch!... thanks for checking bigtrajik1. That's a bit too rich for my blood.
Kiwi Dude Yea same here. Oh well tho keep up the reviews. Are you military btw?
bigtrajik1 No, I'm a civvy, but worked communications for the Navy back in the late 90's. I'll keep the reviews coming :)
"maybe you guys in the states know them well" yes we do we call them dog treats because iv never seen those on the shelf advertised for human use. dogs however...
You've never seen combos?!
where are the tortillas!?
hello again kiwi dude the cheese filled pretzels have a name brand called combos here in the states they make a jalapeno cheese flavor and buffalo chicken flavor that I think if you ever got the chance to try you would really like them.
Thanks, I wish we had them over here!
Those pretzel things are named combos
Jimmy Hattaway They're great! I wish we had them over here.
One time I had a Chicken Pesto Pasta MRE and it was very good, until I accidentally added the whole packet of red pepper, when I only intended to add a little, I was too HOT!! haha
Those little packets can really get away on you sometimes!
Kiwi Dude Yea they can!!!
you suppose to mix the rice with the chicken stew ~enjoy
I remember after a bit that lemon lime juice smacked
Rock or Somethin'.. :D
Yaah, im addicted to MRE's.. :D
Really, addicted to your videos and rocks or somethin'
Tonny Rotten Cheers!
God I tried smelling the food through my phone. 😂
They are basiclly combos
