Yup! You could pass one at the grocery store and never know it. My husband's ex father in law picked up a hitchhiker years ago who was a famous serial killer in our area (Allan Legere). He didn't realize it was him until after.
To be honest, the hey-day for serial killers was in the 1970-1980's. Once DNA came into use it made it harder for serial killers to get away with numerous murders, they usually got caught after one or two. That plus surveillance cameras being around towns and cities and inside stores, it is pretty hard to get away Scot free. Remember, you are much more likely to be killed by someone you know, than by a stranger.
There's no way the killer would be 60 yrs old if still alive today because that means in the early 70's he would have been a young child. He is more likely to be at least in his seventies or eighties.
The killings began in 1971 and the suspect was described as someone in his early twenties. Even if he was born in 1959, that would make him 12yrs old at the time of the first murder.
This is right where I am from. I am truly disturbed that I never heard about these cases it’s terrifying that he is most likely still out there. It hits hard knowing that something this gruesome happened in an area I call home… Amazing Video as always
If I was on the cold case team I would take a closer look at Marlies Hemmer’s friend Peter. His description of the driver, and that he said it was a foreign car, is the only testimony that differs. The fact that he reported her missing only after a few hours had passed, even though they had parted ways and furthermore had different destinations, would make his testimony interesting to revisit.
Yeah, I found it weird that he said the car passed with her in it and she was in back seat which made him scared. The back seat is more safe than in passenger side which is why killers like them to be in front passenger side so they have more control & intimidation of victim.
The most disturbing thing about the cases is the fact that the murderers were never apprehended. I find it odd too that the murders suddenly stopped. Serial killers don't just stop, so they may have just moved to another country.
I tend to agree. Also think it's possible that some of the unlinked crimes could have been perpetrated by the same individual, trying out different victim types and methods of operation. It's uncommon, but not unheard of. The Golden State killer, for instance, changed his methods numerous times over the years, and it definitely helped him keep a step ahead of the cops.
The perpetrator of these crimes is indeed presumed to be responsible for another series of hitchhiker murders all of which took place within the orbit of another West German university town during the mid- to late 1970s, only a couple of years after the Muensterland series had come to end. Although the similarity of the two series didn`t even go unnoticed at the time, the obvious conclusion did not occur to anyone back then: that the evildoer may very well have been a career academic, possibly a physician, who had simply left behind Muenster for Heidelberg/Mannheim to continue his line of career at another renowned university. Fifty years ago, the vocation of medical doctors still stood so high in esteem in society at large as to render the mere suspicion of a medical doctor being the serial perpetrator of sex-murders well-nigh unthinkable.
Yes defiantly a connection they all look alike! The amount of time and the compassion of the victims seem to a serial killer for sure! Good job telling this story! Thank you
Very unsettling that the killer was never caught, and to this day these murders are not forgotten in Germany. Thank you for talking about them!...Just a wee remark about the title, it should be "the Muensterland".
A few of these may have been the same, but honestly I think it’s a few different perpetrators. The differences in the staging and locations of the body dump sites, the different cars and different age descriptions given by witnesses. The fact that the victims looked vaguely similar could be a coincidence. But that’s just my take. Hopefully these crimes are solved one day.
Witness's are notoriously unreliable as to true facts, they have done numerous exercises where they 'stage' an occurrence in group situations, and the witness's versions of who did it vary enormously.
My first experience of death in this life was serial killer. I was seven and had recently moved to California. My neighbor across the street was a beautiful 15 year old girl. We had the same name, Rebecca. She used to smile and wave to me when she saw me which was a thrill to me. She was brutally murdered . Changed my life. I’ve never forgotten her.
Thank you DC for another stunning episode. Can’t imagine how terrified these young ladies were prior to murder. Too many males worldwide enjoy taking females into the hereafter in wicked ways.
Barbara Storm looks remarkably like actress Janeane Garofalo. I literally did a double take. Very sad the perpetrator was never caught. May these women all rest in peace.
All those different vehicles? Could the person be employed running vehicles for dealerships, hence the explanation of all those vehicles and routes taken? Friend did that under contract: run cars from one dealership that had too many of a certain model /color to another dealer, often hundreds o f miles apart.
Could the murdrer be British? there were a LOT of British soldiers stationed around Münster atthe time. I can think of three large bases just off the cuff.
In many, _many_ ways, I would not want to return to the 70s [in part because modern technology rocks] ...except back then, hitchhiking really _was_ safe and both high school- and college-aged boys and girls across Texas did so routinely and without incident. I'm not so sure these all four of these murders share a perpetrator, but rest easy in the knowledge karma never sleeps.
Yes I was a female teenager in the 1970s and many males and females hitchhiked. It became popular in the 1950s, thru the 60s and after the 70s in Canada it became illegal to hitchhike.
Let's deal with all the other murders first. They were obviously not committed by the munsterland killer as one of the victims had the killers dna under her finger nails. There would have been a dna match if they were the same killer. Secondly, what if the munster land killer wasn't a male? None of the victims were sa'd. The victims were all petite, meaning a woman couldn't lift a heavy female victim. The composite drawing does resemble a less attractive female. Have the German police ever considered this?
@TheSaneHatter Just because they are almost unknown doesn't make it impossible. Maybe they are unknown because they are better at it than men. Everyone just assumes its only men that are serial killers and that's why maybe so many women get away with it..
Just a thought, but considering that the victims were of notable small stature and weight, and hadn’t been sexually assaulted apart from one, and in one occasion it wasn’t possible to say……could it have been a woman?…..another woman could easily overcome a smaller woman. And a hitchhiker would be more comfortable with a woman in a vehicle. I know there’s DNA from one victim, so I’m assuming it must be male otherwise they’d say…….witnesses saying they saw the victim with a man, etc….but who knows? Just a thought! Very sad for those young women though. The 1970’s seemed to be a decade of global madness with serial killers.
One thing I learn is. Its make not what country you live in.. evil is there and people are evil in all over the world.. to say its in one country.. is being not watching all the video’s evil is every country…
I'm just here to point out the extensive investigations in each case, including the prostitute. It's a common misunderstanding that police do not care about such subjects, but that's simply not true. It's just much harder to gather evidence as people involved in illegal activities usually remain tight lipped. I was wondering if it's possible that the murders stopped because the perpetrator was arrested for a different crime. However, I don't know if inmates' DNA was automatically taken at that time, which would have connected him to the victims' DNA.
It was certainly true in the UK about police not caring so much if the victims were prostitutes, just look at the Yorkshire Ripper murders, it was only when the young 'innocent' girl was murdered that they sat up and put the foot to the metal. Attitude's have changed since those days thankfully.
To be fair, police do not give the same energy to sx workers as they would give say some suburban mom, or a prominent mbr of the community. And yes, people involved in that world can also be tight lipped. Both can be true at the same time. And they are.
It's always a frightening thought that there are numerous unknown serial killers out there

They should do forensic genealogy on the DNA that was found.

To my fellow Americans, 147 cm is a little less than 4'10, and 180-190 is about 5'11 to just under 6'3.
Marlese Hemers was absolutely adorable 😢
As much as I enjoy your stories I always feel bad for clicking like because of the horrific contents. Great work tho.
YT is an absolute joke for censoring comments whenever you criticise the perpetrator whats the deal with that
It shocks me when my benign comments are censored. I wonder "what did I do wrong?"

No , The killer always went after dark-haired women. He was more likely to have been a pro-Nazi German .

A Traveling Salesman????
What's a "BF license plate"? @11:02
I’m guessing it determines the origin of the car. “B” would stand for Berlin. “F” could be the area in Berlin or possibly “Frankfurt”.
Yes, I believe the first 1-3 letters indicate the city/ district where the car was registered. BF =
Steinfurt District.
