A W Sandberg - Klovnen(The Clown) - (1917) - Danish Silent Movie - English Intertitles

"Klovnen" is a Danish film from 1917 directed by A. W. Sandberg. It is a silent drama film with a runtime of approximately 67 minutes. The film was produced by Nordisk Films Kompagni.
The plot revolves around the character of Joe Higgins, portrayed by Valdemar Psilander, a clown working in a small circus. Joe forms a tender friendship with Daisy, the daughter of the circus owners. One day, an influential impresario recognizes Joe's talent and offers him a lucrative contract at a variety theater. Joe accepts on the condition that Daisy and her parents accompany him.
After a couple of years, Joe and Daisy are married and live with her parents. However, Daisy begins a relationship with Count Henri, who secretly courts her behind the scenes while Joe performs. The affair is discovered, and Daisy, torn between her affection for both men, decides to leave Joe and settle with Count Henri.
Over time, the relationship between Daisy and Henri deteriorates, and Daisy finds herself in despair. She goes to her parents in search of Joe but is driven away by her father. The next day, it is learned that Daisy attempted suicide by throwing herself into a canal and now lies dying in the hospital. Joe reaches Daisy, and as she breathes her last in his arms, she confesses that she has loved no one but him. Consumed by grief, Joe swears to avenge Count Henri.
Many years pass, and Joe, now elderly and working as a clown in a small traveling circus, recognizes Henri among the audience during a performance. Joe performs a final act where he shoots Count Henri using a gun stolen from a colleague. Having finally achieved his revenge, Joe dies on stage, longing to be reunited with Daisy.
"Klovnen" was one of the early successful Danish films and contributed to the career of actor Valdemar Psilander, who portrayed the protagonist.
This is a posthumous Psilander's film.
The film has been reworked by 4K Vintage Movie Archive.
