The thing about mariana zapata books is the slow burn is sometimes too slow like it is rewarding at the end but i always end up wishing we got to see more of them being an actual couple. I just always want more at the end of her books. I will say though that there's something about her writing that makes me fly through her books so quickly even though they're very long.

I totally agree. I LOVED From Lukov with Love but I was disappointed that there wasn’t more of them as an actual couple. It felt like the second they had the breakthrough the book was over. Plus I was disappointed her friendship with his sister didn’t play more of a role.

I think she remedies that in the book All Rhodes Lead here. You get to see them as an actual couple for a while but note its not a sports romance.

It took me years to figure out why I didn't love The Wall of Winnipeg as much as Kulti and From Lukov. I think it is that Aiden has no other interests or activities other than football which makes him boring to me. The other heroes seemed more layered and fun.

So glad Heated Rivalry made the list! While I've enjoyed a couple of Zapata's books, I also sometimes think she just throws in a mediocre smut scene at 98% solely so that it can't be classified as closed door. For Wall of Winnipeg & Me I would've enjoyed the ending way more if she hadn't included that cringey af smut scene, esp after she did such a fantastic job at building up the emotional and romantic connections.

You NEED to read Like Real People Do. It came out in the last year or so and the sequel just was released this month and is a smaller indie book but more people need to read it. It is a sports romance with INCREDIBLY charming heroes and side characters, hilarious and witty banter, and more depth than I've read in a romance in probably the last couple of years. I PROMISE you will not be disappointed!

"The Long Game" is how I figured out why I actually hated "Us." For me, a romance MUST only be one book and have a HEA or HFN, which is what "Heated Rivalry" achieved, with "The Long Game" being more of a drama, not a romance. "Us," on the other hand, was clearly part two of the romance from "Him."

I feel like I missed something about From Lukov with Love. Everyone seems to love it and I DNF'd at like 200 pages because I couldn't take being trapped in the heroine's head anymore. And I'm fine with a slow burn, but at that point in the book, they weren't even having fun banter. They just called each other dumb names. I don't know, wasn't for me.

@@jessicar2609 One of the first examples that comes to my mind, is that in "the wall of winnipeg and me" the female main character says that she wants to run a marathon in a few months, despite not being able to run a few miles without problems because she just took up running again and also having had a pretty bad knee injury thats still bothering her. Going from 0 to running a full marathon in a few months might be possible in rare cases but from the way Zapata writes the marathon training it just seems like she has no idea about it at all

I was personally really disappointed by Icebreaker - first 30% was fun but once they got together (which was super early) it felt like there was zero actual conflict, just random problems that would pop up for the rest of the book. She was inconsistently grumpy- her apparent “commitment issues” we kept being told about didn’t actually emerge at any point in her behaviour. It felt soooo episodic. I had to force myself to finish the final 40% and the ending… was the last straw for me. That last chapter… yikes.

I also didn't like Wall of Winnipeg and Me and I'm glad I finally found someone else who feels the same! I ended up DNFing it at 30% so maybe it gets better, but I had a huge problem with the way Aiden was written. It seemed like Mariana Zapata was trying to depict him as an asshole, but as someone who has worked with special needs kids and adults of all abilities, it was pretty clear to me that most of his "asshole" traits were actually autistic traits. If that was a reveal somewhere in the book that would be fine, but I got the impression that Zapata was using autistic traits to paint Aiden as an asshole without "giving" him autism, and that made me really uncomfortable. So many people love this book though so I hope I'm wrong and if so I would give the book another try!

I couldn't take The Wall of Winnipeg seriously because marrying an American citizen is about the slowest way you can get citizenship. My husband and I have done long distance for three years while they process his green card documents, and we might have to do even more.
For a sports player of that caliber? The US govt could've issued "notable" citizenship, given to scientists, musicians, athletes, etc of a high caliber. Took me out of the story.

Sadly, I’ve read all of these except the M/M ones which just aren’t my thing (and even if they were, I think it’s somewhat problematic when they’re written by women) The only other sports romances I can think to add are the Bergman Brothers series by Chloe Liese (most of them are Sports romance - I can only think of one that isn’t) and Caught Up in a Cowboy by Jennie Marts which is a very interesting Cowboy/Hockey Romance hybrid.
