That poor Atari probably thought things couldn't get any worse until the Hermes courier arrived.
15:20 "I'm just going to tip all this in the bin"
I kinda half expected the entire mobo :D
I do think I should have made the joke, but was still in shock !
Anyone else eating popcorn while watching this? Better than any TV I've seen in years.
Incredible lol! So glad I didn't buy it - I am sure it can be fixed, it's just the effort and time required to do it!!! Looking forward to part 2!!
everyone needs a hobby ! I wouldn't do it for anyone else, but it will keep my weekends busy for a while.
So there is more than one lad in the UK who doesn't accept "this motherboard is dead" for an answer! Your Amiga board repair and this one are hands down the most extreme board repairs one can find on UA-cam. Well the jury in still out for this one I guess!
I love how your gloves scaled up in protection as you progressed 😂
I did a lot of shopping for cleaning stuff and that was the first thing on the list.
Ha ha, yes I was imagining Lee looking like Walter White in a meth lab by the end of it!
thank you for buying it, so I didn't end up doing that, hahaha. that first opening though... I think I would've closed it again, thrown it back in the box, and tipped it all in the bin. Thanks for taking us on this amazing journey! Good luck, and cant wait for the next one
I did close it, perhaps thinking it was my imagination and the 2nd time it would be ok......
Just incredible that it looks like it has even a slight chance to survive! Great video Lee, I enjoyed your reactions so much. Hilarious to watch 😂
WOW
Massive credit to you for having a go repairing this. Thanks for living out the dream for those of us without the time and skills 😂
I have nothing better to do and I love a challenge.
OMG Lee! Well if you get that functional you’re a miracle worker!
When !
omg the state of the inside..
WOW
Very satisfying to watch, I admire your passion in your restoration work!
I have 8 of these computers, some are yellowing a little but this 800xl I've never seen anything of the like!
Respect and look forward to next videos
Getting that RF/EMI shield off mine was such a pain… but the rust and corrosion did almost all the work for you. ;)
Major kudos for taking this on Lee. Well done. Compelling viewing too. Looking forward to part 2024 when you get it working 😄
This was my first computer. Good old tape deck loading of games. Thank you for the resto journey.
Just incredible how well it cleaned up so far - what an absolute mess to begin with, good man taking on this mad challenge!
Looking forward to part 2 my dude.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for great content !
thank you for watching.
Wow thats amazing !
What a fun project! I look forward to seeing part two, and probably three, four and 5 as well.
at least three and then it depends what happens when I turn it on !
You're a mad man to take on the likes of it. "No f***ing way" were my words when you opened it and exposed the mess inside. Well impressed to see how far you came with the brush and small ultrasonic, but I can't wait to see how the PCB comes up in the larger ultrasonic cleaner. Good on ya for taking up the challenge, now I'm off to watch some more of your videos ;)
Thank you, I was just as amazed WOW haha, the keyboard video is about 50% edited and I have soo much footage from the pcb cleaning after. I hope to continue to work on the mobo this weekend now parts have arrived.
Incredible progress cleaning out the Atari from Silent Hill!
Amazing video! I can't wait for part 2! Wow! 😂
WOW
Mate, let it never be said you don't like a challenge! That case at least is probably going to come up really nice
the grills on the bottom are going to take forever so I will do that last if the systems works/ sorry WHEN !
This is beautiful man
Got to admit I thought there was no way in hell you would get that running again. Well done, well done indeed.
God, I receive this, literally I cry, and especially the internal state of the computer, I'm not even sure that with an ultrasonic back it will be enough, honestly congratulations for your courage and patience
Duuuude. That thing looks like it would have fared better if it had been stored in a landfill. But the carnage makes it entertaining to watch. Subbed.
Wow lol Lee I'm so glad I skipped on that one I've got everything crossed you get this going and the video does well keep up the great work from nerd attic
i spoke to a few people who had thought about it too, I don't know if I am lucky or just daft, but I will do everything I can to get it working or find it's too far gone.
@@leesmithsworkshop either way Lee it's a great watch bud
You are a mad man. Off you go. I'm in.
just finished the video and im dead impressed with it's prospects, im excited to see where you go with it next :D when cleaning stuff in ultrasonics with that much soiling/rust i find Allendales corrosion remover additive works really well.
I use special pcb cleaning solution and it works very well. It will be soaked in vinegar and cleaned with bicarb of soda later.
@@leesmithsworkshop One time I had a lock barrel on my car frozen absolutely shut with corrosion, I managed to jimmy the car door and extract it, and took it to the locksmith in case they could find a replacement. I came back next morning and not only had they replaced it with a completely brand-new barrel but they had cut the pins perfectly to match the key, which I had not left for them. What??
Well what they had done was simply place it to soak overnight in TSP and every little spec of corrosion and scale had fallen away, I was utterly astonished with how good it looked and how well it worked. They still charged me $5, grr.
TSP = trisodium phosphate, sometimes available at the paint store or hardware store, but banned in some places because of the strong phosphate content.
6:29 I just noticed the name of the track playing in the background. 🤣🤣
and the name of the 2nd track is also important.
@@leesmithsworkshop Yep, I noticed that too. Along with the change of feel between the first and the second.
Don't I feel like a wimp for throwing out my 600XL when rats got to it...the pooped and peed all over it and it was a horrible mess..... it wasn't nearly as bad as this. Had I known back then what all you wonderful You Tuber restorers know, I'd still have it today. I wish I could have a second shot at it.
What a Nightmare!😝 You are Amazing👍🏻
Awesome. Subscribed. :)
You are a brave guy!
Ohhh, just some retrobright and it's like new! :D
You brave, brave soul~
ON another note I thing I got a small heart attack when you opened it up! This is true technogore....
This is a nightmare and yet amazing at the same time. I hope you can restore this back to working again! 🤞👍😀
I did have nightmares for a few days after this.
ive never understood why nobody just takes a baby wipe to stuff before listing on ebay because their's bad and their's 'ewwwww', admittedly you could argue it's a bit dishonest given how the acid got inside but it'd atleast have get more people willing to try fix it.
it would have just smeared the brown all over. I have spent close to 2 weeks cleaning the case and it's still not free from the brown marks on the bottom.
@@leesmithsworkshop seriously stubborn grime!
I would tip everything into the bin.
You have so much courage.
Suddenly my acid damaged 386 board look brand new! xD Im amazed there was anything resembling a pcb under all that crud. Great job!
Some of the varta damage is way worse than this. The PCB had a few layers of protection with the keyboard and metal shield. The varta attacks from the inside and does a lot more actual damage to the PCB.
@@leesmithsworkshop Acid versus base...
I've tried to fix destroyed hardware, but nothing this bad.
Someone tipped a drink into an Early Video Games Console, then put it in a cupboard for 10+ years. Wasn't fixable as some obscure video chip was dead, other chips had their missing pins replace, but in the end the entire thing was junk.
I do have 5 custom Atari chips on this so it could be a factor.
7:55 HOLY COW - yeah I had a huge chuckle too.
You know what would be great is if you could do some "methods" videos in which you explain how you use the oscilloscope, etc.
you can find loads of videos showing that, I will show as and when I use it.
Finally had a chance to sit down and watch this properly this morning. Thanks so much for the shoutout! I have to admit that I stuck in a bid at the starting bid but that was as far as it went, I'm glad you won it in the end and are having a proper go at it. It actually looks even worse than I expected!
Incidentally, I've also just signed up for your Patreon - I hope that helps go a little way towards helping to pay for all of those cleaning products... 😬
I really was not ready for the state of it inside, but I have wasted a lot more money on boozy nights out and in the past so if it keeps me buys at the weekends it can't be a bad thing. Thank you for joining, as you will see I have lots of progress updates already and I am quietly confident unless I have to spend hours searching for damaged traces.
Coming over after a tweet from Neil, subbed. :)
Thank you.
The 5200 version of Centipede was better than the 800 version; one of the more notable differences is that it had preserved the sound of the original arcade hardware which also used a POKEY chip. There was eventually a backport done but this was long after the Atari 8-bit computer series was out of production.
Who dares wins Rodders , my Son.
Holy crap thats one rusty Atari..quite sad that someone would be quite negligent on such a fine machine..the 800Xl was my first computer when it first came out
Good work. To think, you pried off the rusted aluminum shell, cleaned up the board on that one side and then the horror of discovering there was Micron 4264 RAM under it!!!
I really should do something with that Atari 400 of mine..
don't store it under your batteries.
Ok, down the rabbit hole… looking forward to the parts 2 to 20.
It depends what happens when I first turn it on I guess.
This is going to be an interesting journey over the next few videos.
When you first opened that machine I thought no chance but as it started to clean, I think you might just get this one going. My concern would be the ICs and if they still have legs or if the battery leakage has got into them but as you said all that stuff can be replaced.
Looking forward to the next part.
the legs on the sally are trashed and i lost a few on the pokey too.
Man…. Just Man….. Now you have to get it working😜
I audibly gasped when you opened that case up. I haven't watched any of the other videos yet so I have no idea what the future is for this computer, but you certainly have your work cut out for you.
Enjoy parts 2 and 3.
This kinda reminds me of the 8-bit guy's "worst Vic-20 ever" video. Although that one was just covered in oil and dust, this is way worse. The only thing I've ever seen that was worse was a Commodore 64 that was half buried in mud in a field for 20 years (although it was restored and the original motherboard ended up working).
Adrian's ant nest C64 was in very rough state. Then you have perifractics Atari 800 XL when then rebuilt the case. I stopped watching the other guy.
That's amazing! When I first saw the inside I was convinced there was no chance. But now... now there's a glimmer of hope! What do you think happened to the poor Atari? It almost looks like it was in a flood (for an extended period of time).
It did have some corrosion on the keyboard, but that saved the rest and then the metal shield corroded over time so most of what made it to the motherboard was no longer harmful. It does have a few spots that made it past the keyboard like the sally and the area around the PIA and Pokey. Then the underside has some very dark spots and as we see the bottom of the case too so I guess it sat in the corrosive material for a while. It was from a sea side town too so who knows what else happened.
Looks like the road warriors personal computer. 😁😁😁
Mmmm, the forbidden cocoa powder xD
That is impressively nasty! I’ve never seen anything like it.
The beige plastic cartridge port support near the middle rear of the circuit board can be unclipped by pushing the clips on the back towards each other. Taking that off should make cleaning up the board slightly less impossible.
yep I already have that removed along with the edge connector and the rf modulator.
My OCD wants to work on the tapes!! Oooohhh!! As far as the rust, I would use a toilet bowl cleaner or bathroom rust remover with Qtips to spot apply the cleaner. I could get that rust off!
are you in the uk ?
@@leesmithsworkshop Sadly, No. Northeast Ohio, USA. The product I would have used (might not be sold in the UK) is The Works Rust Remover, which also works on lime scale. And it's inexpensive but man does it work. Best bang for your money! Looking forward to your progress on that 800XL.
Wow, that has to be the worst shape computer of any type I have seen anyone attempt a restore on. Good luck!
OH MY GOD 😢
I'm impressed at how well it's already cleaning up. I'm a little puzzled though, I'm assuming you are using white vinegar to clean up the cr4p from leaky batteries -- as I do -- but mine fizzes a lot, your's doesn't seem to. Also, if the acid in the vinegar is neutralising the leaky battery cr4p, it must be alkali leaky stuff? Mind you "Alkali 800xl" doesn't sound as good for the project name!
Good luck with the rest of the clean up.
Cheers,
Norm.
I am not sure it was acid the board has very little acid damage under the dark spots, they just took a lot of cleaning to remove.
@@leesmithsworkshop Ah, right. That makes sense then. Thanks.
At 8:20 I was thinking: "why doesn't he just save the trouble and restore the Antikythera mechanism instead?" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism).
That picture makes me slightly nauseous... In the US we have a product called Evaporust. It's non-acidic and safe to dispose down the drain. I'm not sure of the chemical process, but I know it's not phosohoric acid based like most rust removers. It might be worth looking up to see if it has an analog where you are. It's completely safe on plastic and non-ferrous metals.
MC-51. It's a British product and it's also available in the US if you know where to look.
where do people find these auctions? I never see them anywhere including Ebay
you have to check all the time and also look for bad spellings. I have searches setup for many systems so can see what are for sale each day.
I see MT RAMs... check these if it isn't working or flakes out with weird errors.
It looks like the computer that sunk the Titanic. You shoulda put it in a bathtub full of vinegar lol...
You will see in a later episode when I check all the ram and custom Atari chips.
wow
I thought the 800XL I bought had a rough time it was just filthy and had a bad PIA.
base
How did you find one in worse shape than the one Perifractic did?!
just lucky I guess.
@@leesmithsworkshop At least you won’t have to rebuild parts of the case with wire and resin like he did but WOW does that look like a mess inside!
Why on Earth didn't you power on test it before opening it up?! =)
because I am an idiot ? haha
@@leesmithsworkshop Looking forward to part 2! Please! Cheers
nice challenge!!! but... how did you buy it at 70 pounds!!! no way!!! seller must be laughing to death of you!!! 🤣🤣🤣 1 pound as much!!! no more...
yes I agree it should have started at £1, but I would spend way more money drinking in one night and this is keeping me entertained for many weekends.
Put it in a dishwasher.
I don't have one, but even then I wouldn't want all the stuff that came out in the ultrasonic cleaner in any dishwasher.
wow £60?? They should have payed you to take it of there hands!
yes I agree it should have started at £1.
I thought i misunderstood, but wow, for 60 bucks I would cry bitter tears and try my best too
@@Spelter I did know what I was getting into.
@@leesmithsworkshop Not with the inside. But yeah, you knew that it was hell. Kudos for how far you are so far.
@@Spelter it really was shocking !!!!
When I saw this on eBay I knew some idiot youtuber would buy it lol, amazing work, good luck
yes I am that idiot haha
Weeeoooooowwh!
WOW haha thanks for watching. lucky for me I only have to clean the case and not rebuild it, but the board is a different story.
PCBWeeeoooooowwh!
Do you think you could record a quick video clip telling me to get on with it and just switch the thing on or something along those lines ?
@@leesmithsworkshop I did audio but the linky won’t share. Email me?
@@RetroRecipes Ok I have emailed, many thanks :)
Incredible restore video! I cant believe you even took this on! One point of improvement, the background music is quite repetitive
Send it to Retro Recipes he prides himself in being able to restore the un-restorable. Donate this to him - see if he can take up the challenge - haha!
