Hey there ! I also try record internally 24HQ with Standby Low Res. ON, and i got overheat 12 minutes after. So i look back to your TEST #2 and i saw that you didn't put it on record and just let it on with the Standby Low Res. ON so the LCD is just in low res that's why it doesn't overheat. So what the purpose of that test ? Cause if you record externally with an Atomos you need to switch the standby low res. option OFF to get the full quality (CLOG, No raw). So if i listen to the final result, it's better to get the option on if we record internally but only shorts records haha. Thank you @Deaf Director if you can help us with that.
Very interesting. I checked my settings and I already had lowers bypass turned on. I don't remember turning in on but it was. I use a Ninja V for recording 4K HQ. I haven't noticed a huge difference in quality since 1.4, but I did notice encoding h.265 wasn't as good. I think that lowers bypass might have come on with the firmware... I've since turned that off for my studio shoots, but turned it on for run and gun where I don't have the ninja. Good channel. I'll have to give you a shout out in one of my videos.

Awesome! What about crop mode? I have a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 APS-C lens on my R5 shooting 24 and 60fps in crop mode. In 24fps, there is no overheat but in 60fps, it still can overheat. I’m curious if this low res mode helps?
do the same test 4k HQ recording to find out how long it takes to heat up please , because if that will involve at least another 20 minutes of recording , wow !

Hey Bryan, this will keep your 4KHQ actual recording time the same, but what it will do is not let you waste those precious minutes between takes. On a practical level this means on a shoot day, you should be able to run and gun using 4KHQ for much longer before it overheats. It has made a huge difference in how I can shoot on set. I’m sort of inspired to try this with the R6, I only really use that camera with the ninja v and if I can get longer record timers there it might be pretty incredible. The R6 can’t record internally and externally so I’ll be interested to see if there is a diff in quality when I hit the record button.
Make sure sd cards are removed or you will overheat. If you trigger record from ninja I don’t think turning low res on is safe due to recording lower res..
If you are not recording internal and ONLY recording on the external monitor, turn OFF Standby Low Res, because the camera won't know to cut it off once you start recording on your Atomos. If you are doing this you can avoid overheating by setting your LCD screen to cut off after 3 minutes. The HDMI will still get the signal and this will greatly extend your ability to record with no overheating. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

I experience that Stand By low res drops the frame rate when I record with Ninja V. If everything is set to 4k 60pfs and I have Standby Low Res ON the prores file will say its 60fps but will behave like 24fps in premiere pro. Basically you cant slow the file down. Have you checked this?
That is absolutely right and crashes one of my last shoots (4K no RAW). You see it nowhere and think you rec it with 50fps. After a lot of stress I found out that the "low res" function is the thing and this drops the frames. So do not use it when you need more than 24/25 fps !!!
CONFIRMED!!! I have the Canon R5 and the 5.2mm VR180 lens and a Atomos Ninja V+. I used a Samsung EVO 870 1TB SSD and was able to record 8k RAW for 59 minutes (the capacity of the drive) and no overheating!

It was weird and unusable. So I turned off low res mode and then the Ninja V recorded fine. On my gimbal though, I don’t record external (too much gear, too heavy), so I’m interested in doing tests with this on and purely recording internal. I also shoot in crop mode so I can get a better 60fps quality.

If you’re recording externally, you don’t need an internal card, you’d just hit record on the Atomos itself. I do this for weddings all the time (EOS R5 4KHQ or crop mode to external Atomos Ninja V). This allows you to bypass overheating and the 29:59 limit.

The video states that the recording has to be triggered on-camera for the resolution to return to high res. So, the question is simply does a card need to be present for the camera to recognize that it should return to high-res from standby or will triggering it on-camera be sufficient without the card and the camera will trigger the recorder to start recording.

Hey Nelson, having an external monitor will really help, and the big thing to realize is that Standby low Res will not increase the recording times, it will only mean that when you are NOT recording you are not losing those precious minutes. Although 11 minutes sounds very short. I would try it with another CF Express card to see if that makes a difference

Are you recording on an SD card internally while you record externally with the Ninja?

Why can’t we export 4k hq as raw to the regular ninja v

Atomos' video about setting for ideal recording says to disable standby low res.

8K will always overheat quickly when doing internal recording. You will need to get a Ninja V+ external recorder in order to do unlimited 8K RAW.
