  • We're looking at a Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) project Cody did on his property in Virginia in which he's managing the habitat for ruffed grouse. With purpose, a chainsaw, a little herbicide, and a lot of passion, he went to work to improve the habitat so it's suitable for ruffed grouse. Follow along as we take a look at the different types of cuts, management strategies, and our plan for making the habitat attractive to the bellwether of all forest wildlife!

After hunting ruffed grouse here in North Carolina for fifty years I would like to add to the Imformation these guys are trying to get out to the public ,,in late winter when deer season ends is when most people pursue grouse ,,and at that time I found many grouse around spring heads and down those creeks for several hundred yards. This scenario combined with a clear cut and the presence of winter forage like fox grapes seemed to be the very best spots I ever found ,,on windy days they like log road beds,,on rainy days they like the cover of conifer or laurel,,I kept records on everything I did ,,,and here is the tip I really would not share if younger ,,the time of day that you hunt grouse ,,,you will see , hear and get many more grouse if you only hunt mid day.

This is great information Bobby, thanks for passing it along! Very helpful for those hunting ruffed grouse and great habitat features for those looking to see if they have ruffed grouse on their property.

Thank you for this video! I think one of the things that I struggle with as a landowner is having tutorials like this that pinpoint what kind of habitat grouse in this example prefer. I don't have a problem spending some time with a chainsaw doing the work, but having a plan to make those improvements tends to be an obstacle.

Thank you for watching! Glad you found this video helpful. With a video and project like this we wanted to give a visual of what we were trying to accomplish and the work that we did because we thought it was the most useful way to communicate and teach about the topic. Thanks again and let us know if we can help you out further in any way!

I was intrigued ever since I flushed my first Ruffed Grouse at 12 years old while rabbit hunting with my beagle and Dad. I believe they need to totally close the season for at least a couple years and as far as in Pa. Quit introducing more predators.
