I tryed it on my Legion GO but switched back to Windows becouse it jist works better in my opinion. Becouse some things dont work in nested desktop and when you are not in nested desktop you dont have on screen keyboard. And the Steamos keyboard is really bad if you use other language than english and my favourite keyboard called onboard didnt work at all.

I switched from windows 10 to PopOS around Christmas time. Installed it on a separate SSD, to keep the windows 10 install just in case I needed it....I've not gone back to windows. PopOS has done everything I've needed, emulation works very well, basic desktops tasks are easy, and modern gaming works very well, I've not had a single problem. Good bye Microsoft.

i tried the same at the time and didn't like popOS. tried it later again with mint instead and this time i liked it a lot. i can't ditch windows entirely, but i'm hella downscaling on the reliance. over time i plan to change from dual-booting to just having a windows virtual machine in mint instead.

Been daily driving it on my Thinkpad z13, and it’s fantastic not only as a gaming-centric device, but also a great Fedora GNOME desktop, so use as a main box isn’t out of the question. I don't mean to diminish the difficulty; I do most of my gaming with GOG games on Lutris, and it's fine, I'd say 80%-90% are basically out of the box, but Steam Deck and Steam OS are seriously on another level. This Bazzite content is so needed. It's more or less my first linux distro as a PC gamer and someone who uses office software. The transition has been mostly seamless but the community could definitely benefit from a comprehensive guide to gaming on Bazzite or linux more generally. Like from initial set up, automounting drives and making new steam libraries(unexpectedly tricky), to things like hardware tips like what components work well with linux or cpu/gpu/ram tuning or setting up an NVME raid game drive. An easier onboarding could really help open up the pipeline of PC gamers who are getting off windows 10 and don't necessarily appreciate windows 11.

12:01 I tried bazzite a bit ago and had to switch off because it gave me audio skipping issues on my Nvidia 4060 ASUS laptop, but the _layout_ of how it functioned and installed was nothing short of beautiful. I love how Ptyxis feels designed for easy distrobox use out of the box. If I could guarantee that audio bug wouldn't happen to anyone else I recommend it to, then it would be an *effortless* recommendation from me. And frankly, when my only complaint with a distro is "I had a few bugs with it (that might be fixed in the future)", that's extremely rare in my experience, because often times if I have a complaint, it's because of the core design of how the distro does stuff, which isn't the case here. Goes in B tier for now, but would be S tier if it was bugfixed a bit. I would switch back instantly if I could do so in a manner where nothing went wrong with it.

Tried a bit of both. In my opinion, Bazzite is a lot better because its desktop mode is way more powerfull, which also means you have more options setting up your HTPC.
For example, I could simply make an web app of a UA-cam for TV page and add it to gamemode in bazzite. Doing the same in Chimera OS was hell. Also, it is way easioer to make installed apps in bazzite gamemode while chimera OS only supports flatpaks, and that only using the plugins

I'd just crash, or if it did launch, I'd get a lot of graphics artifacting. Proton Tricks was also giving me a lot of trouble. Tried Bazzite, got the C++ dependencies installed, and Palworld now more or less runs like it does on Windows. I need to mess around with it more, as there's still funkiness with Intel Arc cards. Bazzite is a cool project and I want to use this as a HTPC to replace consoles as most of my library is in steam anyway and its something I have been chasing since Windows Media Center! The question becomes if Nvidia is not recommended on it due to some issues then for an AMD system what are the benefits over Chimera OS?
Also there is a lot of smoke that the next "XBox" is going to be a pc console hybrid. And MSFT wants to fix their OS for handhelds use. Also there is a lot of chatter about ARM cpus. Exciting times ahead for pc gamers and tech enthusiasts.

    • @HikariKnight
      @HikariKnight 2 місяці тому +4

nvidia images do not have gamemode (same with desktop images), gamemode session is exclusive to the handheld, deck and htpc images which require amd gpus or intel arc gpus.
nvidia and desktop images still have access to gamescope though so you can run it nested in desktop with "gamescope -e -f -w 1920 -h 1080 -- mangohud %command%" as launch options for a game, but you will not have access to all the gamemode session functionality.
If you do use nvidia though, it is recommended to still use the X11 session due to the nvidia driver (this will most likely change later)
Also there is testing being done with the NVK driver in the non nvidia images, and gamemode will most likely work on that in the future.

Oh this is interesting for some reason I thought this was based on a Arch Linux and not fedora like the steam deck. That's why I went with Nobara which is made by Glorious egg roll who works on proton-ge. I am curious to see a comparison between the two.
Also just out of curiosity does Bazzite fix the issue in game mode where the mouse stutters and jumps around? The other issue I have found for the steam deck and steam is is that when using the game mode you can not unlock it if you have the pin password unless you use a controller.

Most anticheats themselves work on proton, but most games that use them specifically disable Linux support. For example Fortnite. So yes, but actually no.
My solution to this specific problem is to simply have two graphics cards, and one get passed to a virtual machine running a stripped down version of windows, and then using a custom compiled version of qemu to bypass vm detection. The game gets “streamed” back to the main Linux os over sunshine and a virtual network adapter so there is little to no latency / stutter, etc.

i have installed the htpc edition on something as old as an i5 4th gen with an rx570 8gb with 16gb of ram
on the nvidia part we really recommend anything RTX 20XX or GTX 16XX or newer (mainly due to NVK support and the chances of gamemode working on them in the future) but realistically you can use whatever is currently supported by the nvidia driver (i believe 10 series and newer?)
We have also had people install it on a decade old imac (dont try this please)
Personally i also run bazzite desktop on my laptops i use for work which are 10-14 years old respectively but i installed it on them expecting to not use them for gaming.

What I've done was set up a gaming rig to run an application called "Sunshine" and then just use a streaming client called "Moonlight" on my other devices and just play games like that. I only ever play games at the desktop now when it's something like Quake or some other FPS that requires me to have the highest framerate and least amount of latency, it's really nice.. the latency on it puts Steam's streaming service to shame, Im even using it right now to watch this video on my TV 🤣

I daily Bazzite's sibling, Bluefin. It's great as a developer OS and for gaming. Everything works pretty much as expected as it would in Windows - except for those titles that are known not to work. There are still some similar quirks with it as you're seeing in Bazzite.
As for Linux gaming - I've been working on some content creators lately on covering Linux more as an alternative for gaming. This is especially for the low budget gamers out there that are going to be up against it when Win 10 is sunset and Win 11 won't be an option. The prevailing opinion is "well, Linux is cool and all; but, you can't play Fortnite and CoD, and those are the only games that really matter to gamers." The reality is that there are way, WAY more games that do work on Linux than those that don't; however, since a few of the more popular titles won't work because the publishers are unwilling to enable support for Wine/Proton on Linux - it's not even considered as an alternative.
Personally, I'm not going to stand for it, and will continue to evangelize Linux-based operating systems are solid alternatives to the mainstream - particularly for those with aging hardware that won't be able to move to Windows 11. The days of compromise are over for the Linux desktop, it's ready to be seen as a viable alternative. We just need more people with a larger reach to start showing how good it can be.

When you say developer os, do you mean that it works great for developers as well? I’m working a lot with Java and dotnet mostly, but occasionally with a bunch of other languages as well. If Bluefin would be a good replacement for someone like me I’d love to give it a go. As it is now, I’ve basically given up on doing any development on my desktop, and just hook my work-supplied MacBook to the monitors and peripherals and use that instead when developing…
