    I'm running bazzite myself atm.
    And you can mount your extra drives in the root filesystem, for example the standard location for permanent drives: mount /mnt works. On mutable Distros I always use /mnt/Games and I do the same on bazzite, but it's /var/mnt/Games

    For people wondering.
    Last week I did a FPS comparison between Nobara and Bazzite 3.0 using CP2077 and the results were identical on my 7800xt. The total Frame count rendered where with only 1 or 2 points apart. This wasn't the case with other distros like Garuda which lost 2 or 3 Fps and about 100 to 150 Frames.

      So what you say is that the difference between Nobara and Bazzite is close to 1%?

      @@markdevaal4116 No that's more these fedora forks vs Garuda and other arch systems.
      The total Frame count was 5711 (Nobara) vs 5709 (Bazzite) but Average/min/max fps was identical at 89 average/ 111 Max / 72 min (1440p ultra with no FSR/RT)
      Garuda was 86 average/71 low/ 109 max with a total frame count of 7655 (I wrote all these down) I also tried other distros like Cachy and Manjaro which came a little closer (87 average 5665 frames) but it seems like these Fedora forks beat them all just slightly. Cachy was the closest at 88 average/ 5692 frames, but I had to change the kernel to get there.
      X11 on Arch dropped frames by almost 10fps vs Bazzite/Nobara
      These were multiple runs. All KDE. I was thinking of trying Debian/Ubuntu stuff next weekend.

      @@Dr-Nonookie For Debian I can suggest SpiralLinux or Sidduction. Sidduction is Debian SID as a distribution. SpiralLinux when installed it, you can switch easily to Testing or SID. SpiralLinux implemented BTRFS + Zram (swapp-ish swapp file ) very well out of the box. If you want to use KDE 6, dont use Debian for a while because the maintainer went to Arch cause by debian maintainers who called him a alot of not nice things. So Testing, SID and experimental are still on plasma 5.27.

    I've broken Bazzite 3 right at the installer. For some reason it couldn't install Grub. That said, I saw somewhere saying that it may need a minimum 600MB partition for /boot/efi, but there is nothing in the installer informing you of that. I tried using a 512MB partition as I do with my LMDE system. I might try installing Bazzite again with that in mind and see if that helps.
    The immutable system is attractive for stability and security.

    I really never know how to feel about these distros. I started on Nobara, and while I learned a lot about Linux that allowed me to eventually switch to openSUSE Tumbleweed. Unfortunately, during my time on Nobara, I felt as though I missed out on a lot of the "behind the scenes" Linux stuff that really bit me in the ass when I switched to Tumbleweed. I think distros like these are a great tool and I would totally run this on a console-esque PC in the living room, but I don't know how I would feel about running Bazzite or Nobara as a main distro anymore.

    • @Distroreport
      @Distroreport Місяць тому

      I switched to desktop Linux at the beginning of ‘24. But have always tinkered around with Linux server side. For the majority of the time I ran Fedora workstation, and switched to Tumbleweed for a month or so.
      But a lot of the quirks I ran into on Tumbleweed was more related to tumbleweed doing things different compared to fedora. For example the firewall that is active for some settings you need to use Yast. Fedora RPM’s don’t always run well with Tumleweed.
      Tumbleweed is a solid distribution, but it has its quirks. I’m now running Bazzite and I honestly love it. When you combine bazzite with distrobox you can basically do any thing you can on a regular non atomic distro.
      But with the piece of mind that your base OS stays nice and clean. No longer filled with old dependencies that stayed on your system after remove some programs.

    I did not have good gaming experience with Bazzite 3 KDE and Gnome /Nvidia. Valheim would crash when save game was used. Both manual and auto. So, it could play more than 30 min max and back to the Valkyrie dropping me off. Otherwise it worked fine. Frame rates were good, smooth actions and everything I could want. Fallout 4, Space Engineers and CTA: Gates of Hell wouldn't even start. Just finished deleting from it's HD.
    I do like the idea of an immutable distro. I even have Bazzite Gnome on a none gaming Mini just for general stuff. The only problem I have with it is that the web brower and other thing have a horrible lag before they start. MX Linux did not have that problem, but I broke it somehow.
    So for me, Bazzite has some potential, but not ready for prime game time. Too many unknowns, I don't have enough experience with immutable distros. I haven't broken one, but just don't work like I think they should.
    The search continues for my ideal system.

    Nobara simply instantl crashes (like, turns off completely) on my Lenovo Legion 5 and I just heard about Bazzite. Gotta install it and see whether it works and I like it. Ran Linux as a daily driver for years on my ols PC, but since my interest in gaming came back it required a new machine and the sad realization that Linux gaming isn't as good yet as the community says. Never had to frickle this much on Linux before, but the only way to motivate companies to support Linux is by users increasing its market share and I'm all in for distros that attempt to make that step even easier.

Nvidia gpu would keep blanking out if no movement on screen. Linking things like ubisoft connect would end up not loading games after working a few times but then would quit after reboot. Where the mouse would click was not on target. Was selecting an inch lower than where pointer was.
    I tried chineraos on a ryzen mini pc and it worked great!
    This setup not so much.

    If you install something via dnf command in bazzite (not using distrobox) where does it install? I installed goverlay by using sudo dnf install goverlay, and it's working, but not sure how does that impact the OS itself and updates.

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  Місяць тому +1

      On bazzite its immutable meaning it needs to relayer the app, its gonna install the same way normal fedora does but just it has to recreate the root partition again for goverlay, so it would be the same directory
      Updates wont affect much

    • @foznoth
      @foznoth Місяць тому +1

      I was going to say dnf shouldn't work, but someone in Fedora/Bazzite has linked it.
      The command you should use is 'rpm-ostree install ', without quotes.
      This creates an usroverlay which is a read/write partial copy of the root partition with any needed changes. This layer will survive updates. It is considered best practice to clear any user installed packages like this before rebasing to a different Desktop Environment, as the changes may mess with things. As always caveat emptor.

    Do you prefer Bazzite over Nobara?

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  Місяць тому +3

      Hmmm that's a hard question to ask lol, i think bazzite does a better job at handling updates vs nobara because bazzite has a pretty big team working behind it, while nobara only has glorious eggroll and a couple other people for creating gui stuff
      But since bazzite is immutable, it means i cant use system packages on bazzite and can only do it under distrobox, while nobara can install system packages and has a nice gui app for installing those system packages so the user doesnt need to touch the terminal that often
      But for stability bazzite is a better bet then nobara because of what i said before and glorious uses mesa git for gaming which can cause issues with some games in the past like cs2 on amd cards
      Overall it comes down to what i prefer, i dont rlly know to be honest, i could use either and have a good time with it
      But if i was gonna recommend a distro to someone that isnt going to build packages but wants a good gaming experience, i would say bazzite is pretty solid because of that immutability/atomic style of updates

      Well cpu doesnt matter as intel supports linux a LOT, but nvidia should be good for a distro like bazzite, you just pick the nvidia iso and it will have everything setup for you :)
      One of the problems right now is there is a feature that isnt implemented yet under nvidia for something linux users use daily for displaying things on our monitors (wayland) so you have to use x11 for now until the drivers release this month and the desktop environments support it
      Im pretty sure bazzite will set that for you automatically with the nvidia iso

    I have multiple different machines that I have tried, Bazzite, ChimeraOS and HoloISO on, these include Dell 7040 and 7060 Micro's, and none of these work properly, they all result in a non working install, except the desktop version of Bazzite, but even then, I found major issues with just running Steam, Xbox wireless controller issues and ultimately, I just installed Ubuntu and Steam and this works properly, I find the hardware requirements of these gaming OS builds to be ridiculous, they all require you to have dedicated GPU, and usually prefer an AMD GPU and the GPU has to be particular models, if its not in the small list of working configs, then the OS will just not function, I find this silly, Linux is usually the King of making old outdated hardware useful again, now Gen 6 to Gen 9 Intel IMO are not old, and Intel iGPU should be the easiest to support, but these gaming OS are borked, if you want a real SteamOS experience, just install Windows, rip all the bloat crap out, then replace the Windows shell with Steam BPM using gpedit and job done, all games will now work, you never need to see Windows, and it will run just like the Steam Deck.

      I think understanding that these distros dont have required specs at all, the kernel is responsible for driver support, then the user space driver is what is used which for amd or intel is mesa, nvidia uses their own proprietary drivers, its the same experience across distros like these or arch, fedora or any based on distros, i have been around the block too many times and installed countless of distros on all different types of computers ranging from a 2013 pc, 2015 laptop, rtx 2060 to a rx 6700, i5 8400 to a ryzen 3700x and soon upgrading to a ryzen 7600
      These distros are immutable also so there are a lot of different pieces to learn here whereas ubuntu is not
      Also looking at these computers( dont know what hardware you have exactly), i dont see why you would install bazzite on it, that computer is not made for gaming at all lol
      You're better off using ubuntu or mint ngl
      What bazzite provides is bloat for the gamer so they dont need to install those applications + stable updates so it doesnt break or if you have a handheld device gives you more flexibility for gaming on linux vs using windows or steamos

      @@linuxnext No they are not gaming machines, but what they are is perfectly good HTPC's that I use Steam game streaming on, and there is plenty of low end games on Steam that do run on these things anyway, but primary use case is Steam in home streaming, and using them with just an Xbox controller, I'm not a novice here, I was playing with computers most likely before you were even born, I have high end AMD machines with AMD and nVidia GPU's, I use one of these as a game streaming server, and I have mini PC's running around the house, all running Steam, I also have a Steam Deck, I only use that with Steam streaming as well, all of these Gaming OS builds seemed to be borked with intel graphics, so Ubuntu, or Debian with just Steam works better and more reliably as well, have tested on machines running Gen 6, 7, 8 and 9 Intel CPU's all using Intel HD graphics, none work with these Operating systems, they will boot the installer, but Gamescope will not work and result in a black screen, I have been testing for the past few months, now I don't think having to have an AMD or nVidia GPU should be a requirement to run Steam and lets face it, they are all trying to mimic SteamOS, all I want is a base Linux OS with no desktop, running Steam in BPM that's what these OS are essentially, Ive been doing this with Windows 10 for years, just base Windows 10 no desktop, and running Steam as the GUI.

      @nexgen-3d-printing have you tried vanilla fedora desktop or arch based like endeavor os
      If i had to guess what the problem is, it could be the fsync patches in the kernel, could be mucking up the older hd graphics support that is trying to be used

      @@linuxnext Yes something is up with Intel graphics, I'm sure Fedora and Endeavor will function properly, using a full desktop OS is what I'm trying to avoid, I already have Debian based OS's running fine, I'm just a little disappointed that these StreamOS clones are so difficult to run, I wouldn't put any of them on a real desktop PC, only on a handheld or HTPC, and there is quite a few older handhelds running Intel graphics and there is a crap ton of lovely ex business mini PC's all just begging to be used as open source gaming consoles and HTPC's, hopeful one of these three projects gets it sorted.

    Not a fan of Fedora. Is there any reason for why there just isn't an Ubuntu based Gaming distro? both Fedora and Arch got loads of them

      Well there is a ubuntu gaming distro pika-os.com/
      Just not a lot of people talk about it because of ubuntus history with snap and canonical.
      I dont think pika os uses snap anyways so this distro could be perfect for you
      Also there is pop os which is great at gaming because it uses the system76 scheduler and newer kernel + updated mesa buuut the base of ubuntu is old and so other system packages are out of date, this will change soon tho

      Probably because of the update cycle and fresher packages. Fedora and Arch adapt new gaming related things faster.

    To be honest, I feel like Linux has been plagued with distros since the dawn of the age. Nowadays, some are just reskinned versions to promote their brand, akin to watching a Kickstarter video for an Unreal game with asset flipping.
