- The legendary carl zeiss jena pancolar 50mm f1.8 vintage lens,is it really as good as its reputation or over hyped? lets find out together with some real world photography and cinematography. #vintagelens#oldlens #lensreview
this is the dream lens, the final 50 that will be added to my collection. i own two of its contemporaries- the Meyer Oreston and the Pancolar f/2. both are two of my all time favorite fifties; i am sure the Pancolar 1.8 will not dissapoint!!
@@campbells0ups haven't tried the oreston yet, hope to soon and not tried the f2 pancolar, that looks like a beautiful lens
@@fistfulloflenses absolutely love both of these, i believe the Pancolar 1.8 will be middle ground between them. also, careful with Exakta-mount versions of f/2 Pancolar, they have a bottom lip on aperture arm that will need modified to adapt.
@@campbells0ups thanks for the tip, I was looking at an exacta adapter just recently
@@fistfulloflenses the modification on the Exatka version is a small filing job. the F2 Pancolar also came in M42 mount but is rare. the Exakta mount are more affordable, but they are tricky to mount and use on my FF Canon's
the zeiss jena colors are truly legendary-some of the highest rated among vintage lenses. the thorium in the Pancolar 1.8 adds something even extra on top of that. love these images
@@campbells0ups there's a certain quality to Zeiss jena lenses that can be hard to quantify, I'm definitely a fan , thanks for your comments, very much appreciated
the colors of the Pancolar's are deep in vibrancy, as well as high in saturation. the tone is magenta and warm and the character is like a romantacized version of reality. very strong and pleasing.
Yes! Shoot some fall colors with it 😊
Hoping to, I've got a place in mind 😊
Every good video I love watching your videos, don't stop 😁😁
@@Rev_Rhys thank you Rhys,I won't, and thank you for the encouragement
Another great video!! The Pancolar is such a lovely little lens.
@@perin99 thank you, hope to add more to the channel soon
Nice review and pictures to go along with it as well as video. Just wondering if this is the same lens as the Pentacon 50 mm 1.8 lens? Didn’t Zeiss Jena make them both for both companies?
@@gerryhardman9060 thank you, much appreciated, the pentacon 50 mm f1.8 is a different lens design ,I have one here in the praktica pb mount ,a nice lens that I hope to review, one day
I have two I love them that much
Great lenses, are they both the zebra versions?
@@fistfulloflenses yes. Both thoriated. I couldn’t chance losing one
@@BossHossStudiosthat's awesome, I don't think I could be convinced to part with mine , absolutely love the lens
@@fistfulloflenses would love to find the 55mm version. Insane prices.
@@BossHossStudios 55 mm version??
As the locals around here would say "Boss job La'.."
@@photographyforenjoyment thank you Alan, nice to be appreciated 😊
Cogratulation you have the more sought after thorium version. I think based on the serial number your lens is later than 1965 probably 1967 near the end of production before it switched to the non throrium 6 blades.
Thanks for the extra information, found conflicting information on the web . Thanks for the comment

You didn't mention wihich images were taken by which sensor.
I decided id rather viewers to have an unbiased mindset when viewing the images ,and rate the photos on merit rather than a preconceived opinion as to which sensor is best, also I felt that putting up which camera took which images is distracting.
