I had the Nikkor 28mm 2.8, it was NOT good !
The performance is just so so. Colour shift.
Just acquired one of these for video work, so am thrilled to see what you have done with it. The colours you have achieved are just stunning. I am really looking forward to getting out with this lens, though my local scenery isn't quite as gorgeous as yours. Many thanks.
@@earlgreybeard thank you very much, glad you found the video helpful, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the lens.
@@oc2phish07 Indeed. The lens is the star, but good colour balance and exposure together with shot choice are not to be sneezed at. The Sony A7S V robotic camera is still a way off 🤣. Ha ha. I just replied to a comment that has disappeared...
I would be interested to know how you get along with the lens, thank you for watching and commenting.@@earlgreybeard
I like the new presentation Karl, good to see you as it adds a lot to the friendly feel of your voice. Great video!
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan, it's a bit scary showing your face, I'm much more comfortable behind the camera.
look at that mug - just look at it!
😂
great review! im interested in how the red mc version of this lens compares to the earlier zebra radiocactive version! in your opinion of course
@@campbells0ups that's something I was also interested in, although the zebra version I have , is the radioactive version and has yellowed , so the colour doesn't quite match, if I get around to curing the older version, I'll shoot some side by side test shots to properly compare, from memory they both seem to be equally sharp when shot wide open.
@fistfulloflenses I used to have the red (MC) version. But when I got my hands on a Zebra version (non-radioactive, also: not multicoated), I made a comparison and found the Zebra version to be sharper. But I don't think that this is a general statement, and it only applies to these two individual pieces, as the variations seem to be significant.
@mawob thanks, that's interesting , I've not tried the non radioactive zebra version, it's probably true that there is some variation in quality between copies, even when they were new, but now after 50 years, that would be especially true.
Beautiful stills and video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, upload a new video soon.
The minolta rokkor 50mm 1.4 was my favourite from the 1970s and together with the 85mm 1.8 made up an excellent couple for wedding portraiture.
@@PMS1950 haven't tried the 85 f1.8 , looks like a great lens
very interesting 🙂 I used to use a 24mm vintage Nikkor on a D700 for shooting land and seascapes 13 or so years ago now. I loved the results that combo gave me.
@@duringthemeanwhilst how are the manual focus lenses lenses on Nikon DSLRs?, on canon DSLRs ,(canon 5d and 5mk 3 ) I find it a bit of a challenge.
@fistfulloflenses not an issue for me as I shot landscapes at f11 mainly, so focusing either to infinity or using the DOF scale for hyperlocal focusing gave great results
A tun of purple fringing
The 28mm f2.8 is one of the few Nikkor lenses that underwent a revision of its optical design in the transition from Ai to Ai-s. I have a copy of each and the Ai-s has closer focus and better correction for barrel/pincushion distortion. In all other respects the older Ai version is comparable to the legendary Ai-s and a lot cheaper.
@@NigelHuddart I've not tried the ais version, I've read that it's even better, thanks for the info
Best one yet Karl!
@@photographyforenjoyment thank you Alan, it's been a while since my last video, as there's been a lot of illness in the family, thank you for watching.
Great Video! I recently bought the previous 28mm f3.5 Ai version and I like that too. I sold my 28mm f1.8G as I'm headed in a more vintage direction. 🤣
@@Cotictimmy thanks, appreciate that, I haven't tried the, f 3.5 version, that would be an interesting lens to try, I love trying different vintage lenses, as you can probably tell 😂
@fistfulloflenses I'm really terrible - constantly buying lenses to try out and then selling them on again. 😀
@Cotictimmy buying them and then selling them on, makes it a very affordable hobby, I've got a problem, with keeping them, I'm going to have to sell some soon, 🫣
I'm a bit confused if Choosing this lens or the Super takumar 135mm f2.5 6 element version.
I know that the 6 element super takumar is highly rated, I mistakenly bought the 4 element super takumar at a good price ( which is supposedly a budget version) I've reviewed that lens and it was surprisingly good, I can only assume that the 6 element version is even better, but unfortunately haven't come across a copy at a reasonable price, yet.
I loved this on my Pentax K7, back in the day! I did a lot of research into which K mount 135 to get and was delighted with this one. The M 85/2 was very nice too.
@@dogblessamerica thanks for the information, i would be interested in trying the 85/2 , I will keep a look out for one.
Great video and beautiful scenery!
@@jacobbailey6718 thank you, appreciate your comment.
The massive rise in prices of good old lenses and the concurrent rise of excellent cheap Chinese AF lenses make them a lot less appealing to me these days. When you can get something smaller, lighter, cheaper, sharper and less prone to flare etc it doesn't make any sense to me, with certain exceptions like the Helios 44 and Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 that offer something unique. It's a nice lens for sure, but the fun times of high performance to cost ratio are long gone.
Overall I agree, but there are still lots of extremely cheaply priced vintage lenses going under the radar.
@gangawerks are there?! I only see bargain Soviet lenses these days, and most of them are pretty terrible. Nikkors and Takumars etc have skyrocketed since mirrorless became popular. You could hardly give them away 10+ years ago
Also, when you take into account that vintage lenses are steadily rising in price, they actually become very affordable, and investment even @@gangawerks
The vintage lenses I have, are actually worth more now than when I bought them, so they are very good value for money, an investment even.
@fistfulloflenses i totally agree. If a lens is not your thing it's so easy to sell.
Unlike modern lenses - those AI lenses are a pleasure to use.. 🦘
I agree, the build quality is superb, and if you're comfortable with manual focus, as I am , they are beautiful lenses to use.
@@roybixby6135 a lot of them are becoming dry and stiff now though, and re-lubing isn't particularly easy or cheap in most cases
Your video is really refreshing, subscribed!
@@ReflectiveTones that's very kind, thank you.
I have several Minolta 135 lenses, the only one missing is the Celtic, despite its weight I have a great affection for the PF, it is very easy to maintain because the elements are easy to disassemble and clean. I use it a lot with an SRT-303 with excellent results and also with a Sony A-6000 and A-7R3 many times for street photography with or without light and I am always very satisfied with the results obtained. Another lens not so well known but with incredible optical performance for being vintage is the MC tele rokkor QD 135mm F3.5 also completely metal mountain-valley weighs 400 gr. It does not have a built-in hood but there is a separate metal one (the 135 PF weighs 550 gr. not 490 gr.) so when there is light I prefer it to the PF. Plus it is shorter and the DMF is the same 1.5 m. When a shorter focal distance to the object is needed, the MD 135 F2.8 is preferred.
I have this lens and I used to use it often when I used it on a Minolta x300/700 cameras but when I changed to Nikon Dslr in 2010 it could not be adapted very well but I have kept it as some day I may get aFuji xt2
@@johnarmstrong5727 I had the Minolta x700 and a centon df 300, which if my memory is correct, was based on the Minolta x 370 ? , still miss the x700 , sorry I sold it, I convinced myself I needed autofocus for wedding photography, ironically I'm shooting mostly in manual focus these days, the Fuji cameras are great, I've got the xt1 ,I'm sure the you'll be pleased with the xt2.
That was great - thank you. Your delivery was perfectly matched to the qualities of the lenses. And to the lenses... i have no Zeiss glass, but i think you've prompted me to change that. The problems for me with these is that the newest is not beautiful to behold, and the Zebra, no matter how sharp it is, will remind me of my MOG Domiplan. Silver it is then - round bubbles Rule! Cheers from New Zealand - have a good one.
Thank you, nice to hear from you, new Zealand is on my bucket list, beautiful country
Thanks for your nice video. I’ve tested loads of 135’s and the Sonnars are definitely among the very best. There’s little difference between the 135/3.5 and the 135/4. Just a little caution for future Sonnar buyers: many of these lenses are decentered. It will mostly still give excellent results, but one corner maybe sharper than the other. So make sure you have a good one.
Thanks for tip about decentred lenses, and thanks for watching.
Another great all round vid. Man, you've got a great voice for narration.
@@gangawerks thank you very much, glad you're enjoying the channel, hope to post more soon
I'm shooting pancolar lenses since 30 or 40 years, always on film cameras. This Zebra Pancolar 50mm f1.8 with 8 blades is one of the best and most precious lenses i ever had.
@@j.c.103 it's a beautiful lens, love mine , just picked up the red MC version, can't wait to try it.
I have Nikkor 135 f3.5 AIS. That is excellent wide open too. ❤️
This one and the Sonnar are the best vintage 135’s.
The advantage of these Vintage lenses is it can be used for full frame and apsc. On the full frame has no need to crop as apsc mode.
It is not the lens that shot the batman, it is an operator that shot the batman 😂
@@ViktorSv-fc1gf quite right,I stand corrected 😂
I had w/b on auto for my first excursion with this lens. It completely lost the radioactive tint. I was a little taken back before i realized what had happened. I love the quality of this lens with daylight settings. It was surprising how sharp this lens it. This lens really got me excited. I love it. Can't wait to shoot painterly, intentional, period type portraits and be able to achieve the look all in camera. 📸🌞
@@MaurySmithit's a great lens , love your portrait idea, let me know how it goes
Thanks for this video - I purchased the 135mm a few days ago. I also purchased the 50mm f1.4 and an adapter for my Fuji X-T4. Then I thought to myself why not experience the Konica Hexanon AR mount lenses as they were intended, so I purchased a near mint silver Konica Autoreflex T3 for a great price. I'll be shooting with it tomorrow with a roll of Kodak Gold 200. The T3 is solid good and heavy just like I wanted - and the shutter speeds all seem accurate - I'll see how it goes tomorrow. BTW - you have a new subscriber.
@@steveborghardt Thanks for the subscription, id be interested in hearing how you get along with the lenses and the camera, I have an autoreflex T3 in black but I've not put a roll of film through it yet, looks like a good camera and I can't wait to try it out,I've been contemplating getting a bulk roll of b&w film so I can do more film photography, let me know how you get along .

This was another lens I picked up in my £20 haul, I was planning on selling it to recoup my initial investment back, after watching your video I'm not sure I can part with it.😊
@@pdtech4524 that's a good bargain, not sure it's worth rushing to sell , my thoughts are enjoy using them, you can always sell them in the future ( they are very unlikely to lose value) they are likely to gain value as time goes by.
Great video, informative. Funnily enough, I picked up a Helios 44m in a haul of photography gear I paid just £20 for a couple of days ago. Shown in my latest short video. Hiding in a lens case was this beautiful, mint Helios, straight away I knew it was something special, my copy is from 1982 KMZ factory. I'm looking forward to some swirly bokeh action when I put it on my lumix g3.😊
Real bargain find , I will check your video now 👍
@@pdtech4524 just looked at your short, very impressive, just £20 for all that, the Helios 44-2 I bought alone cost me more than that ( the first proper vintage lens I bought) I'm a bit more canny nowadays, but still your bargain hunting skills are top notch
I has the yashika version...very good
@@peetsnort yashica version, that's interesting do you mean this lens with a contax yashica mount?
I love the 50/1.4 version of this Minolta. Would love to get my hands on the 58mm version one day
@@ohjajohh Ive not tried the 50 f1.4 , also I would love to try the f1.2 , Minolta have some great lenses in their lineup, surprised that they haven't got a bigger following
I picked up a Yashica 50mm f1.9 recently from a charity shop for £15. I was a bit apprehensive at first, not really knowing much about this lens. So I had zero expectations, fitting it to my lumix g3 I took a few test photos and was astonished how sharp and crisp it is wide open, the colours are nicely rendered and the bokeh, very dreamy! 😊 I think we have discovered a hidden gem! I've added your channel, it's always good to connect with other photographers 📸 especially those who appreciate the vintage gear.
I agree, what an underrated lens, it's great when you stumble across a hidden gem, totally agree about connecting with other photographers, its one of the motivating factors for starting this channel, thanks for adding me.
Got one for 5$ today from a local thrift
Real bargain, enjoy
I wish I could avoid watching your videos Karl, every single one makes me want to go out and buy a lens!
There's certainly a lot to choose from, with so many unique and interesting optics out there it can be quite addictive
Rather like Conrad4094 I always used to have one with my MX outfit back in the day Karl, such a compact lens was ideal on that equally compact body. Nice work 👍
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan, it's always a pleasure to hear from you, do you ever get chance to shoot any film nowadays?
@@photographyforenjoyment the MX is a super little camera. Did you ever use it with the 40/2.8 lens ? That makes it so compact that it fits in a little old leather bag that I normally carry a small Japanese rangefinder in . I must admit I do usually prefer to take a 28, 50 and 135 combination for a “small “ load but I will sometimes swap out the 50 for the 40-80 f2.8 zoom which is a very compact short zoom lens
@@fistfulloflenses The chance yes, the time yes, the desire yes. I think it will probably be into the new year by the time I do something about it though!
@@conrad1837 I shoot so little film these days, something I had better change in 2025. Back in the 70s/80s it was still primes that outperformed most zooms and like you, I packed 28/50/135mm with every outfit I used, be it Pentax/Minolta/Canon or Nikon. The little 40mm passed me by though!
@photographyforenjoyment same here, when I started I was told to avoid zoom lenses, and most photographers I knew had a 28mm 50mm and 135 mm in their camera bags
tyvm for the video. 28mm is a struggle for me so it's nice to see images from someone who knows how to use it.
Thank you for the encouragement, very much appreciated
One of these comes with me in my bag any time I take my go-to film SLR, my Pentax MX out . I’m very satisfied with that lens.
I'm hoping to do more film photography in the coming few months, I've got a few rolls of Ilford fp4 at the moment, what film would you suggest ? ( I do my own developing)
@ well since you’re developing it yourself and already have some black and white film , for simplicity I won’t suggest any colour film. A personal favourite of mine is Rollei Retro 400S which is an interesting film with which you can do infrared photos , using a suitable filter. However I like it for having a very pronounced character with strong contrast and definitely a more retro feel . The 400 iso speed should help with some extra leeway for light this time of year . Or if you’re fond of the Ilford stuff then Delta 400 for this time of year
@conrad4094 thanks for the tip Conrad , ive never tried the Rollei film and infrared is something I'm interested in trying, I have used the delta film a few years back but i wasn't impressed with the results maybe I should give it another chance.
@ there’s a rollei Retro 80s and a Rollei Superpan 200 also . I believe all are based on some old Agfa-Gevaert Super panchromatic film, hence the infrared thing.. there is a dedicated Rollei Infrared film too though. I have to admit I shoot a lot more colour film than black and white though
@conrad4094 Thanks for all the info, I'm looking to try a few films and then pick one to buy in bulk and use with a bulk film loader to try and keep costs down.
it's a good start!😉😬
Thanks for another informative video. The vintage lenses are really interesting.
Thank you for the positive feedback, it's a pleasure to talk all things photography
This is a wonderful lens and I agree with your conclusions. I usually reach for this lens when I head out. Have you tried the 55mm f1. 4 version ?
@@michaelherskovitz4203 unfortunately I've never tried the 55 mm F1.4 version, I not yet come across one , have you used one,? if so I would be interested to get your opinion .
Interesting cases for the lenses - did you craft them yourself or are they regular retail items. I’ve also gone down the rabbit hole !!
They are just regular aluminium camera cases that I've put pick and pluck foam in, I was trying to organise my collection, it also makes it easier to transport the lenses, you two down the rabbit hole 😊 what lenses have you got, any personal favourites ?
I got this lens a few weeks ago because I wasn't perfectly happy with a Chinon 135 mm f2.8 I had purchased earlier. I think the Takumar performs better, the bokeh is creamier and it's slightly sharper than the Chinon. Just paid 25€ for it so a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. BTW, a little off topic: how's the Sony with vintage Pentax lenses? Are the focal lengths as specified or does using an adapter change that? Can you control aperture or are you stuck with shooting wide open?
@@astral_brain 25 is a steal, I'm surprised that the lens is not better regarded it has nice bokeh its sharp and i love Pentax colours, that's interesting about the chinon lens (I was looking to buy one ) the Sony works well with vintage lenses, there's no change to the focal length when using the adapter on the Sony , all the Pentax I have at the moment are vintage manual focus and manual aperture, so there's no problem with controlling the aperture. do you have many Pentax lenses?
@@fistfulloflenses Yes I have lots of lenses because I've been shooting on Pentax since the analog days in the 90's. After a long break from the SLR world I have recently purchased a Pentax K-5 APS-C DSLR that I can use my old lenses on but I would prefer a full-frame sensor. The Pentax K-1 full-frame camera is a good piece of kit but also bulky and expensive so I'm looking at what other options are out there that would take my Pentax lenses. I love the Chinon which is a real bokeh-monster but it doesn't really offer any advantages over the Takumar IMO. On the other hand, considering the cheap prices they can be had for, you could get one just to satisfy you curiosity and to have a different flavour of the same.
@@astral_brain The Pentax k-1 looks like a great camera, I briefly considered getting one, but I like the idea of trying lenses from different manufacturers, as a cheaper option I bought a cheap adapter and modified it to use Pentax lenses on a full frame canon DSLR, it works ok , but you have to rotate the lens so the markings are in the wrong position, also canon DSLR camera (I have the 5d mk 3) are not the easiest to manually focus with, I did consider fitting a different focus screen to the canon, after doing this for a while, I came to the conclusion begrudgingly that mirroless was the answer, something I resisted because of the cost , for full frame when I was buying the best option with my budget was the Sony A7 series
@@fistfulloflenses The A7 seems like a good option and I will put it on my list of candidates for a future full-frame upgrade. 👌
Beautiful pictures and honest review. I wish you could have added some closeup portraits. Do you recommend this lense on nikon dslr?
Thank you, portraits would have been great, maybe in a future more extensive review, as for Nikon DSLR unfortunately because of the flange distance, you probably won't get infinity focus , unless you do some modification to the lens
did you or would you consider the older version for the sake of an improved mfd or does the latter version have better coatings or maybe it just doesn't matter. thanks!
Good question, well when I saw it for sale,(at a good price) I just went for it, after it arrived I did the research and worked out which version it was ( it wasn't clear which version I was getting from the photos in the listing) after researching the lens, it didn't seem like they made much if any change optically between this and the first version , Konica made the lens a little lighter and changed the close focus from 45 cm to 55cm , coatings as far as I could tell from reading up on the lens stayed consistent, unfortunately when im researching these lenses sometimes you get conflicting reports, so if im not sure I don't include it, apparently I have read somewhere that this lens was used by the Japanese military as the benchmark to compare other lenses to ,but i couldn't confirm if that was 100 percent true
My experience with vintage lenses led me to belive there are no "magical" properties to particular models, it's really more down to the sample variation than anything. The recent video on David Hancock channel where he did a huge test of 50mm 1.4 lenses kinda confirms my observation. Some of the lenses he tested were very early models and performed greatly, like silver nose zuiko 50 1.4 which was single coated at a time.
@@bwellington3001 I also watch Hancock, as Zenography is not quite my flavor even though he still provides interesting info. What other channels do you recommend for vintage glass?
@@seoulrydr another one would be Marco Aries

It's not a bad lens and not an expensive one at that. I really like the blue flare it can produce when the sun hits it just right. Thank you for your videos it motivates me to go play around with the different lenses I have in my kit.
