- Stock shock absorbers don't allow for altering ride height - that's where coilovers come in. How to adjust coilovers. How to lower your car. This video shows how to raise or lower your car using coilovers. It is important to note that altering your ride height will change your suspension geometry, and should be followed up with a wheel alignment.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
One final recommended step. If you take your car to get an alignment, ask to have the car corner balanced. If they look at you like you are stupid, find a shop that will corner balance your car and corner balance it CORRECTLY so there is no wedge in the car (the sum of your right front and left rear is the same as the sum of your left front and right rear) when you are in the car. This ensures that your car has the same handling both right and left. Just adjusting the ride height alone will not corner balance the car and can actually upset that balance and can create a funky handling ride.
Can I do corner balance even I don have adjustable drop links?
Bro real men don’t get an alignment
@@awwbubba3071 😅
Very important.. I’m dealing with that right now
A wedge in my tire to say the least
If you don't have something to measure the gap, you can also count how many threads are exposed.
I like your style
good thinking bat man
I just measure the gap in between with some piece of paper and make sure both sides are even.
Can i borrow and extra hand to count ?
Spring stiffness will not change, and I'm not changing the overall length of the spring (known as adjusting pre-load).
This was my main question. If you put the coilover all the way topside or bottom it out.. The spring will feel exactly the same???
So far so good, I definitely like them. They are stiff so they won't compress as much with weight in the car, but that said it is a bit rough over certain bumps and such. But yeah I'd say worth it, I've looked at others and the spring rates seem to be fairly similar across the line.
Yo
Unfortunately not! I don't have the measuring tool, and they're quite expensive.
I work at a shop with an alignment machine and I do most of the alignments so alignments for me are free lol. I guess I could raise or lower my Honda as much as I want it'd just cost me time. I think stock height is good for me though.
I dont want to sound rude but the explanation was a bit confusing. Like somebody asked, the way you worked looks like you were modifying the spring load by turning the orange nuts. What actualy you did was turn all the upper part of the coilover and introduced it in the base part of the coilover.
I think you meant preload. Spring load is how much weight the spring can bear at a certain distance. That is already designed into the spring that you select. You can't adjust that after the fact.
al rod Yes you can adjust preload. If you picked up for day a used set of
Coilovers your supposed to set the preload if it has any play in the springs . You can adjust that all the time lol
This comment is very important.
He actually loosen the 3rd collar to adjust the height of the suspensions even though he spun it from the orange ones he wasnt really messing around with the preloads
@@yogipangnanouvong388 we know. He was getting the right effect. But the correct way is to spin it from the bottom to avoid messing with the preload on accident. You loosed the lower jam nut/collar then spin the bottom of the strut.
You don't actually have to keep periodically checking the height. You can just take the lowest lock ring at the bottom of the threads, and bring it up to where the gap between that and the top adjusting rings is the placement you want it at, then keep adjusting down until you get the lower lock ring at the bottom again. Then measure and adjust slightly if needed.
that’s what i thought he WAS doing😭😭
I read you're not supposed to adjust the bottom ring. I'm not sure if that's a universal rule. But I never touched mine.
The actual adjustments aren't that difficult, but I don't own the expensive laser level tool which is used to find out where your alignment is at, so I probably won't have videos on this anytime soon.
For all those confused on how this specific coilover system works. The 1st gold ring right under the spring itself is to set the pre-load... but only until after you set it appropriately and use the 2nd (middle) gold ring to lock it in position can you use that same 1st ring to adjust the height. This specific coilover systems spring is independent from the top mount so it can move up and down without affecting the pre-load.
Lies
@@babyboynene literally truth.
Yah basically using the "jammed" nuts to spin the entire shock body into the sleeve
Yonaka supplied me with the coilovers; I haven't looked in to other brands much. They're definitely stiffer, but body roll is also reduced a good amount.
They gave you the coilovers and you didn't review them?
Correct me if Im wrong but I thought the locking nut/ring at the very bottom had to be loosed then rotate the whole spring assembly to adjust ride height?
Yes, excessive negative camber would cause the insides of the tire to wear quicker, while positive camber would of course cause the opposite.
Hello, please I wanna ask, is this possible with all car brands, especially my 2007 Toyota Camry. Do you have an idea. Thanks.
Yea it is, doesn't matter what car you have. All coilovers are adjustable
Thanks simple & straight to the point!
I like your videos bro. Your the only one making videos that I layman like me can understand.
Keep up the good work brother 😀
Question for you: I've heard pretty often that you should -not- adjust the lower ring (not the lower shock collar, but the lower one by the spring perch) as that will mess with the preload, on coilovers with threaded shock bodies. So, I'm slightly confused.
Great video, I used this video to help me adjust my coilovers.
Also every coilover is different, just because he set his at 6.5 inches doesn't mean you should set yours to 6.5 inches too. The coilovers on my Toyota Celica was exactly the same inches as the wheel gap, where 4 inches on the coilovers (bottom of bottom-ring to top of top-ring) was exactly 4 inches on the wheel gap (fender to tire).
I have videos on damping (suspensions - explained), camber (camber - explained) an toe (toe in and toe out - explained). Search my channel or go to my suspensions playlist. :)
Do u absolutely have ti take the wheel off or can u leave it on and just jack up the car and adjust it
UA-cam, Google, forums, service manuals, etc. It's out there somewhere, just not in one spot. :)
Didn't you have to unscrew the bottom first to make the adjustments to the height? Then retighten the bottom to lock, right?
To lower it yes. To raise it technically you wouldn't have to because it's going to move up as the assembly moves up. You still should though just to make it easier on your hands. 2-3 adjustment sessions will leave your palms sore lol
I think he was talking about the bottom ring that is locking the top ring, not the ring locking the height. So I believe to answer his question, is no, those 2 rings are to adjust the spring preload.
I set my RaceLand coilovers with 3mm of preload
Well, it's best to eliminate camber for street use. It will cause uneven tire wear, though I've heard poor toe is worse than a little camber. I'm planning to get adjustable camber arms to compensate.
I was just looking for a video for my teg 😂
is there any chance that the inner axle will pull out? when bc coilovers are on? because I had it removed because I had coilovers, I just adjusted it from .5 to 2.5fingers gap, then the axle pulled out after adjusting, suspecting the spring because it is said to be soft. or is that tension because it's no longer camber?
Perfectly explained thank you!
It is pretty awesome indeed!
please make a dampening/preload video. or help me out and explain how to adjust them and what I would need to do. my car is crazy stiff and I am not sure if I need to adjust both and or how much I should be adjusting each of them. (I purchased the car like this).
Perhaps, or some dry lubricant. Grease would likely get a lot of dirt/debris on it. They make special stuff for shock threads as well.
What kind of engineer says left and right? Say clockwise or counterclockwise
I dont think he was an engineering at this time
Not really. A coilover is a coil spring around a shock absorber (shock absorber = damper), a strut is a structural load bearing member of the car, as well as being a damper, and a damper is simply a shock absorber (dissipates energy).
Hmmm I dropped mine about 2 inches in the front, 06 wrx and the tires sitting a little below the wheel arch causing it to rub a bit
Check out my videos on camber, caster, toe, and steering axis inclination. These are different variables (some of which are not adjustable) which can be used to alter alignment. Most shops will alter toe, and some will alter camber (if adjustable). To be sure it's done right, ask for a print-off of the alignment before and after, and ask what the OEM spec for the vehicle is. If they can't tell you (or provide this), pick a different shop!
Hi, I adjusted my coilovers, all measurements from bottom of the ring to the other ring are all equal. Drove it for miles, but I found out the wheel gap is not equal? Is it normal?
You can get more adjustments from some more expensive coilovers on top of height adjustment (or preload). But they are mainly use for 80% track and 20% road.
Eg. compression and rebound adjustment for the shocks.
There are also some coilovers that you can adjust high speed compression and rebound, and low speed compression and rebound.
Very happy to hear it, thanks and thank you for watching!
This could get expensive with the alingments depending on how much you raise and lower your car . I have a 2004 civic ex , I'm considering getting some coilovers, but not sure what brand to go with , any suggestions?
I just use some digital calipers.
explain how to adjust 3 way adjustable coilovers please, like the high speed compression and low speed compression part, there is nothing online that teaches it
You've just adjusted the preload of the springs
The whole tube was turning and winding itself in. Preload rings were still locked together so preload was not altered in the slightest.
Dude. Thanks more than a 2.5 inch drop😳
Holy crap! Just stumbled on an OG video from 9 years ago. Bet you didn't expect your videos to take off like they did but i still learned something from this vid.. had to double check my brain on the right way to raise or lower coilovers..
Just curious since your coil overs have the threaded sleeve at the base to adjust the ride height why did you adjust the spring to change your height, is there any benefit or loss to doing it this way?
I left the spring pre-load as is, and simply adjusted the length of the strut (spring did not move).
Hey thanks for the response i appreciate it. My apologies I just re-watched the video and noticed that you never separated the two jam nuts and by keeping them together it made the whole sleeve turn. I havent had to adjust mine while still on the car so i didnt consider doing it that way but good to know thank you. One more question for you if you dont mind. I have the skunk2 pro s 2 on my eg hatch and i havent been able to find any definite answers even from skunk2 on where to start with the preload. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks man just bought a miata and it was so slammed to the ground I couldn't even get it home this helped a lot
Check out my Facebook page (facebook dot com / engineeringexplained). I'll have a video up soon!
No damping adjustment. They feel stiff, but not bouncy. Vibrations seems to be dampened out well.
Are my coils ruined if I can physically twist it by hand instead of using the key lol?
Does camber affect tire wear, like excessive camber?
I know is this is old. But when you do this do you do the exact same to the opposite end? For instance both front coilovers should be symmetrical? I did this but when I measure wheel gap it’s uneven. Could this just be my driveway?
Please do not buy the adjustable coilover . ( shocks ) this video are not tell you what problem behind . 1the cup screws to body frame , is not fix , make a noise , 2 the break line screw holder not have a thred . I have to buy a nut to put it in . . 3 the bootm of the shock have 2 big crews this brasket biger the screws . all they loose after finished test drive . the shocks very hard . the car is not soffer when you crossing railroad . they bounding very hard . no good at all .
By lowering mine it increased negative camber and altered the toe. I don't yet have adjustable camber arms so I just had the toe adjusted.
What if the rear coil lovers don’t want to lower? It seems like my front coil lovers are lower than my rear, does that make sense? Should I use a cheater bar to force it to go because I don’t know if I’m at the max which I highly doubt it because I have aanswer to gap between my tire and rear fender thingy
Tell me what defines a real coilover.
Can we see a pic of the final result? I wanna see how good it looks!
Rookie question, you have the bottom ring all the way down then the next camera change you have the bottom ring up? I didn’t see you move the bottom ring, so I have to turn the bottom ring up the desired amount I want it lowered? THEN turn the top ring to the left until the bottom ring is sitting flat then tighten the bottom ring?
my ksport coilovers intructions says to adjust the ride height by spinning the bottom part of coilovers that connects to the lower control. instead of compressing the spring like you’re doing in the video to prevent premature wear. now i’m a confused lol
You should avoid turning the upper rings at all once the preload is set properly if it needs to be whatsoever.
In threaded body coilovers you should be turning the spring by hand to thread the body deeper into the bottom of the assembly, or out of it to adjust the height.
If the spring just spins and the threads of the coilover doesn't, the preload is not set properly.
My name is Matthew and I have now got adjustable coil over spring shocks and the front spring are popping badly when I turn a corner is that normal they came already asempled already
Correct, and if they do separate you can simply tighten them back, I'll have a video on this tomorrow. :)
Thank you so much for this video. Thats all iWanted to know, if you can use coilovers to keep your car notmal height.
Thank You!
No, the spring rate is not affected on these coilovers.
@Engineering Explained - I have seen some reputable sources say adjusting ride height from the lower collar is incorrect. They say to make ride height adjustments at the lower spring perch. This makes no sense to me and intuitively I adjust ride height as you did in the video. This method does not disturb bump/droop distribution like spring adjustment would. Any comment on that?
If you have a large enough gap between the tire and the fender, you may be able to get away without taking the wheel off. For me it was necessary.
Okay So quick question, i have a 2006 civic si, i bought godspeed mono ss coilovers for it, installed them and could never get the bounce to go away, could it just be improper setup or that the spring rate on the aftermarket springs was too high?
Im curious as well. I have an 07 EX and hate the factory ride. Want to know how to dial out the "bounce " if i encounter it. Thinking about Tein myself
Christian Anderson cheap coils. Try adjusting the dampening to a stiffer setting see if that helps. I put on Megan racing coils and they bounce too. Going to settle for air suspension I want that smooth ride
You’re not adjusting ride height... you’re adjusting dampening. Dampening is set from factory to be as smooth as possible, now you’ve gone and made that unstable, giving you a much rougher ride
To change the coilovers, do All the sides need to be jacked up?
Thank you for uploading this I was confused my buddy tried explaining it but u just helped mea lot lol mine our coming in Thursday
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!
lol 3 more days too bad ohios winter probably wont be over for another month or two then theeyll be on
Having a problem I lower my e60 on coilovers and my car not moving after I installed it? Any help
this is adjusting preload is it not ? I'm being told to loosen the bottom spindle, then to turn the whole coil itself.
Nope, though some places offer a lifetime alignment deal.
old video but this is not optimal. You should use the spring perch to set ride height. The base height is for bump/droop.
I hope someone can answer; is it possible to do this with the wheels on and without a jack stand? I know I can get on my back and do the rears, but is it safe that way and will it work?
No u gotta do it without wheels on and with jack stand
This is completely the wrong was to lower your car . That’s loosening the springs and messing with the way the car rides .
Question I just got my coil overs and they are threaded all the way to the bottom on the lower seat so I leave it like that and just adjust the coil only ?
Great video and easy to understand, just a clarification please, in order to raise the vehicle do you make sure that the top 2 collars are well tighten together and rotate the lower collar (of the 2 collars together) counter clockwise looking from the top, should the shaft rotate (the screwed long portion) with it too because when I did that, the shaft did not turn with the collar, what did I do incorrectly? Perhaps the 2 collars were not locked together tight enough?
Terry Tak did you back the bottom, smaller ring away from the lower mount a little?
I'm triying to raise my car up should I measure the car before raising it just incase I want to lower it?
What if I just move the top ring to the right? Will that also raise the car? My lower ring is seized…
I can do mine pretty easily with the wheels on. It helps to steer the front wheels to the side to use the C spanner. It's going to depend on your car and dexterity I guess. Lubrication helps as you can spin the shock by hand rather than having to turn it with the spring perches and spanner.
simple and easy, good job explaining it. Im about to lift my Tesla M3P. It's currently slammed
I didn't measure it, but fairly close to 1:1.
Do you need adjustment of wheel and camber when adjusting the height of coilover?
u can count the threads easily with a zip tie and count the ticks u hear..it weird usually i separate them first b4 going lower or higher...ima try this next time
Great video man! If you keep it up you might make it big on YT some day... 😉
There are ways to do it yourself, but if you want to prevent uneven tire wear it should be done.
the smaller wrench seems useless. i tried to use it to lock the lower smaller ring and it doesn't wrap all the way around.
search on google: "KW 24h Rennen nürburgring" and you will find an article where I have my information from. I also was on the Nordschleife the last times. Bilstein is not bad but the most (and the winners) drive an KW Competition suspension. I am in an racing team and drive 2 cars at slalom and Glp on the Nordschleife and most drivers just change from Bilstein to KW.
I would recommend you KW Coilovers variant 3.
It is the best coilover you can buy for money with lifetime guarantee.
you can set up everything on this thing like you want and it is made of stainless steel. In germany everybody buy the coilovers from KW because it is the best of the best! And this is true. 90% of the race cars of the 24h of Nürburgring are equipped with KW.
Im bought K sport suspension for my Honda Crosstour it can adjust about 2.5 cm lowered from my stock but when i bring to the shop and they done for car, it’s lowered than that I expect and the problem if i hit the bump sounds like cracking,, sounds like my springs at the rear is to much compressed,, im just asking is it normal or will be bad to my car,, i need ur help and pls comments thank u
Thank You Brotha, straight and to the point 🙂🙂🙂. Greatly appreciate this info
Also u can raise the lower ring to the amount you want to lower. This makes it ez not to overshoot🎉
Becaue i tightened it to the point where it has alot of tension but not all the way where that spring/gasket is flat
Does the rearward of the coil over adjust upward too like the front, I want to lift the rearward of the car
My car has coilovers but the suspension is ridiculously soft and the bottom of the engine and exhaust slam the ground insanely. Enough to kill the transmission mount. Would raising the car fix it to a degree ? The scraping anyway?
ThexNOOBTUBEx Sounds like you need to get a different set of coils, and yes, raise it back to stock height.
oh no my friend ;-)
about 90% use KW and only 10% use Bilstein.
Bilstein is only a spnsor of 24h racing and so you see the stickers on the cars ;-)
i just installed hks coilovers w/ adjustable height and damping. I have it on the stiffest setting but the ride is really bouncy :( it oscillates and takes a while to settle. What do I do to fix this?? adjust pre-load? what is the purpose of pre-load? How do you know how much to pre-load it?? is the spring supposed to be able to spin once its preloaded? I can't find any decent answers
You recommend these? I know its an old vid but I just purchased a 95 w 170k miles and gonna upgrade the suspension. Its just a daily but I'd like to drop it a bit and get it a bit tighter in the twisties while maintaining a decent ride.(not too stiff)
I was also considering these, www.amazon.com/Function-Form-Adjustable-Coilover-Suspension/dp/B001XX01VQ/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2C7F13DMYSE8ERWH7MEN
Theyre 600 v 430 but it was what I was recommended for my needs as well as these. If there are any others you recommend please let me know. Also, I was curious, do you recommend coilovers over a spring/shocks set up? Thanks so much.
I was just going to ask how does it not affect the preload? The top nut locks the Springs tight for the preload from the moment one installs? I am confused. So Could I do this with my RaceLand coilovers?
U were suppose to loosen both of the gold/orange rings from each other. One is a locking ring.
When lowering car make sure to adjust all the other suspension parts, otherwise the whole design and ride of the car is severely affected and many parts will break causing many many problems, don't just lower or raise a car because it is 'cool' do it for practical means, which there really are none. Thank you
