I believe the night prior, Bill Walsh was watching TV and noticed a kid in college that he wanted to have after his season was over, I wonder what his name was?
After watching the full thing, it was a pretty exciting game. Especially the 4th quarter. I could kind of see why Debartolo chewed out the team in the locker room, since Houston was winless at 0-7, and he didn't want his powerhouse squad to slip up to the worst team in the league, especially since they had already had their first loss the previous week against the Steelers at home. But I don't know, Houston played hard more than the 49ers seemed to be slacking, and the 49ers offense still kept the foot on the gas in the 4th. It was just the defense that crumbled. They still won 34-21, so Eddie needed to chill. Anyway, worth a watch. Also, Tom Brookshire and Wayne Walker were soooooooo good as broadcasters.
How many on the 9ers team? Unbelievable (criminal!) to me that Roger Craig is apparently not HOF. I think he was the first to have a 1,000 + 1,000 season (rushing and receiving yards) and I think had a number of them with at least two back to back seasons. He was also one of the first to have a heavy, challenging off-season regiment, before they became more common. Apparently a number of greats across the league wanted to join his regiment including Jerry Rice and other big name RB's. He had big impact on the league behind the scenes. Hats off to the Oilers for this game. They came alive and showed their potential with a fired up young crew and very impressive first Warren Moon game facing the 9ers. Great Montana-Moon shootout!
Yep, I remember Al Toon of the Jets getting absolutely smoked on a hit and him coming back into games after being concussed, ultimately ending his career early after only 7/8 years. They really had no idea back then how concussions effected players long term.
Mostly earlier in his career. He was well worth the risk. He's what I'd consider "a natural," with RB skills you just can't teach. He'd find creases somehow all the time, and shoot through them like a rocket. And would seem to get more yards than you think he should've, consistently. He was an underrated RB. Him and Roger Craig were the best RB duo in the history of the game, perhaps, and are credited with turning the 9ers offense into a true, complete SB team. (Of course the O-line and the D never get enough credit.)
Only lost 1 game all year to the Steelers at home.. That one game was only because of a controversial pass interference penalty on Eric Wright to this day was one of the WORST calls I've ever seen. Cost us a perfect season.
Rest in peace Russ Francis.
Rumour has it Bill Walsh was watching highlights on tv of some guy named Jerry Rice in his hotel room the night before the Oiler game
Both Uniforms are cool AF. Love those baby blues but the Niners scarlet and gold is sweet, too!!
Love the announcers on this game- Tom Brookshire and Wayne Walker.
Maybe my favorite Montana/Clark hookup other than "The Catch" at 2:10:52. Circumstances weren't as big, but the spectacle was just as astonishing.
Tom Brookshier, RIP & Wayne Walker w the call 4 CBS!

The greatest football player of all time Jerry Rice!!!
He also took notice of a formidable Oiler TE who would be recruited a few years later - Jamie Williams.
Renaldo Nehemiah's replacement

Eddie hollering YOU GOTTA BRING ASS TO GET ASS at them is one of the funniest motivational lines I’ve ever heard
Sorry but how do u know debartolo chewed out the team?

And a lot of other things about the city and the league...
R.I.P.
The 1984 Houston Oilers had 5 hall of famers on this team.
Moon, Campbell, Munchak, Mathews, and Brazille.

Incredible. And to think: they started this season 0-10

What's really amazing is how fast Joe releases the ball..you almost think the video tape is sped up
Not that there's really any comparison, but Jimmy G actually has a quicker release. I guess the only thing he has on Joe.
49:16 "Looks like Ronnie Lott has a slight concussion, and probably will return in the ball game". Times have definitely changed.

@@rustykuntz94 or maybe they did? I think they knew more than they let on.
1:59 mark says the same.
This was the game where Eddie debartolto went off on the entire team
I thought Bill Walsh was pissed off by the team's performance
It's also the same weekend Bill Walsh saw highlights of Jerry Rice when he was at Mississippi Valley State.
"You gotta BRING ASS to GET ASS!"
Eddie DeBartolo
PR director Jerry Walker was fired somewhere over Utah, then rehired the next day.
Wendell Tyler was a talented player, but fumbled like crazy.

The 84 49ers were on a mission to win the Super Bowl that year and they accomplished that feat beating the Dolphins in SB 19.
Good Ole Days :)
I 'd even take my '84 fins instead of the dreck we've had here in Miami for about 20 years now....
Tom B. called it at 1:33.

And after they won the SB, they drafted the GOAT WR- Jerry Rice. The 80s Niners were a great organization.
At 1:59 Joe Montana gets tackled out of bounds. If this happened today with a QB like Mahomes, there’d be a penalty and a fine.
Great game!
I am always looking for games with Robert Brazile.
