This is an exceptionally old video now, but I’m keeping it up seeing how people still find it useful. One day I might remake it having learnt from my mistakes here, but I can’t promise anything.
Why would you explain basic features like the brush tool and the stabilizer, but then assume the viewer is an expert on advanced topics like clipping groups and the magic wand tool?
I don’t think you have any idea how much this video effected me as an artist. I genuinely loved this video so much and I was so inspired by it that I have probably watched it at least 100 times. Thank you!
This video is a huge help, I'm currently transitioning from Photoshop to Paint Tool SAI and I've been spending a lot of time reading up on tutorials, watching videos, and taking everything in before I practice. Thank you for this.
As someone who's been drawing since he was but a wee lad, coloring has always been something that escaped me the most, and the usual bout of tutorials I find are hours long in comparison. I've begun applying the techniques I've learned from this video, and I've already seen some major improvement in my work. Thank you so much!
I love this tutorial it's very helpful but I still don't quiet get the shading part how u made the shading different when you finished shading. Adding shading does rlly make ur pics improvimg
I'm hoping to get paint tool SAI for Christmas, and you are really the only good tutorial I could find that actually explains, shows, and gives tips without going too fast. :3
Dude this was great! I dont really draw animals, but the rest for shading in general made my art look so much better than when I originally started, I would actually love seeing future tutorials if you do them in the future.
those brush ends actually effect the shape of how your strokes end. it essentially picks a shape. so if you were to choose the square one, your lines end with a flat point. if you chose the one all the way to the left, they will end with that shape. at least, thats what i think they do.
do you need a wacom tablet or something for these things or is the mouse just as good? otherwise I won't spend my money on a tablet if using a mouse is just as easy. please help me ;-;
Cinno AJ using a mouse is harder but if you don't have alot of money *like moi* then it works fine. you just have to do pressure and weight. It works just as good. heres the links to the tutorials *which is NOT mine* www.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-Paint-Tool-SAI-117926671
This was really Awesome! That last bit, the lighting effect really made an effect I wasn't expecting. My friend uses Sai and I hope to get better at using it with practice and good ideas like these. Thank you
OMG thank you for the help! I've seen this type of line art and ALWAYS been confused on how to do it! I am SO using the tips when I get my first tablet, I use my mouse at the moment.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the boxes with the rectangles that have square and rounded edges is like a graph for how opaque/big your brush will get throughout a stroke. For example, the one with rounded edges will build up pressure and release it at the end, but the sharp one will start at the highest it will be and end at the same level
You should try making the canvas a bit larger before you start a drawing, it could help. Also the box thing in the beginning changes the hardness of the brush
Thanks, I could not remember how I shaded the last time I did, but even if I don't use everything here I have a wonderful place to start now. I learned more than just shading too. I would select outside the lineart layer and then invert the selection and color that in. Your way seems slightly easier.
I am literally screaming this tutorial is on point omg thanks. I just got sai and I cant wait to try it out now (also thanks for explaining the layer settings and all, I never figured out what those did
Oh my gosh! Best tutorial ever! None of the the videos helped me. Idiot me for not using "preserved quality." Thanks so much again, it really helped! :) Have a nice day. ;)
Kayla Jackson I use my mouse. But always remember that having a tablet isn't as easy as it seems, it won't boost your skill, it's still exploring a new realm of art, digitally. So it's something new to learn. I'm actually getting a tablet really soon, but it's going to take a hell of a lot of practice! > . < So I'd just practice with a moue for now. It improves you in some area and allows you to explore some elements of new/different things.
Freekmode Muchiez yeah. its going to be a multi tasking kind of thing. but when i get a tab and pen im still going to use the mouse for some big details that the tab and pen cant do fast enough. im just going to use the tab & pen for drawings and the ketboard and mouse for the pen sellection and etc.
This video came in really handy and thank you very much for making it but may I please ask how to get rid of a line after you made a mistake? I'm sorry if you already explained it.
+Chris Watkins i draw something, i use the magic wand to erase the extra parts sticking out, i erase the parts the way u say to (unless im suppost to erase the extra parts on the layer with the colors, or use the magic wand on the line art) but then some parts on the inside become erased. is there something im doing wrong, or am i suppost to use the line art thing that gives u a pen and other stuff?
+Chris Watkins Make sure there are no gaps in your lineart. When you use the magic wand tool, all the selected area will turn blue. So if you see anything inside the lineart blue, check the lineart again, or lower the 'transp diff.' slider.
+PrancingWildfire Try ticking the "Preserve Opacity" box on the left-hand (I think?) column under the "Mode" and "Opacity" bars once you've colored in your selection. Oh, and another tip: instead of having to constantly select the parts you want to shade/color on different layers, just make a new layer (over the base color layer but beneath the lineart layer) and tick the "clipping group" box. Now everything you draw on that layer is restricted to the area of the layer its grouped to. What I like to do is select everything outside of my lineart, invert that selection (so everything within the lineart is now selected), color it in grey, and then make clipping group layers above that one for all my actual coloring.
im new to drawing with SAI and I keep trying to colour on the layer under the picture I made but it doesn't show up, I think im doing something wrong or I forgot to click on something
Yes a tutorial on colouring/shading is much needed and appreciated!! Also, can you help out with the shortcut keys? Like, most of the time I don't even know they exist, or where they are -_- Thanks for reading! :)
***** I completely understand how me not showing the whole screen makes this pretty confusing, haha. I didn't really think this tutorial through when I was making it. ;v; Layers are like... If you had sheets of transparent paper. So whatever is on the top layer will show over everything below it. So you'd have lineart on top, shading in the middle and colour at the bottom. I hope that answers your question?
Hello ! I really didn't get how you changed the color of the lineart at the end of the video (12:30). I can only change the whole color of the line but not tiny parts of it like you. Can you explain it slowly ? I've been searching for another tutorial online before posting this but didn't find any. Thank you for your time :)
Zeldette Make sure the brush size is small enough that it doesn't cover the entire drawing. Also make sure you are using the 'pencil' brush and not the 'brush' one. I hope this answers your question, if not then please tell me!
Oh my gosh thank you for the lessons. I learned the preserve opacity feature from this video because I wanted to learn how to make my line art to match in color! same with the shading and luminosity
Ok, so you know how when you select the "preserve opacity" tool you can't color outside the lineart layer? Well, for me it's the opposite. I can only color outside the lineart instead of inside. Its rlly frustrating. Do u know what the problem is?
When I put the stabiliser up it doesn't affect how smooth the lines are and I struggle drawing without it anyone have any ideas what's going wrong for me?
This is actually the way of shading I was kinda searching for, I really apreciate you created this video XD (Even tho the low frame rate is a bit annoying)
you are aware that if your brushes hardness is really close to hard (yours was 6) you need to press down harder, unlike it being around 100 (in the middle) where its more like natural pressure sensitivity, I am aware you said you dont like the way it looked but im just commenting on the wrist strain fact.
This is a helpful tutorial for learning how to use SAI's tools, but I was a bit confused when you jumped straight from the half-finished image to the end result, which looks nothing like what you were working on before.
+Jamie Gordy I can agree with that, haha. I kinda made this tutorial on a whim, and what I showed was just a 'how it works', so it didn't look as nice as the finished thing. It just ended up being more confusing that helpful, especially to people new to digital art. If I make another tutorial, it'd be more straightforward, actually show me drawing and not having a 'this is what I did earlier!' approach.
Hello I need some advise. I recently bought a pc tablet called the "NuVision draw tablet 11" (like a tavlet tablet, which you can touch and stuff) which Is like your normal tablet but you can connect a keyboard to it. I downloaded the paint tool sai on it and did everything I could but every time I draw on it the line come out wobbly and unclear. Any advise??
sorry for my idiotic question, but when you use the select tool it always leaves the black/white striped lines on my drawing. You seemed to have gotten rid of it fairly quickly. is there a shortcut key for it?
The Magic wand tool doesn't work for me I drew a cat, coloured in the whole canvas orange, clicked the magic wand tool and everything was purple! I pressed D and all the color was gone? (even the color of the cat got deleted? I don't understand, I did the same with a circle, I made sure the lines were thick, I coloured in the whole canvas, got the magic wand tool and it happened again? I don't undertand?) And yes, the colouring layer was under my lineart layer ;-;
You can make a new layer using the line tool by clicking the 'New Linework Layer' icon below 'preserve opacity' (next to the new layer icon, it looks the same but has a pen on it) I hope this is what you mean!
I can't put more than one color on the drawing It's really frustrating can someone please help me? (I have the trial version if that makes a diffrence)
i have a question! how did you select that part there ( when shading) and also i dont have all that tools that you have. i have only very low. thanks for answering me then... :)
fire alpaca has the same thing and to me i prefer more bc its basic but you can make something great but it has some setting to make it more preferable to you're taste :>
This is an exceptionally old video now, but I’m keeping it up seeing how people still find it useful. One day I might remake it having learnt from my mistakes here, but I can’t promise anything.
What brushes did you use, and this is super helpful to this day! A remake will be extra helpful!!
Yeah thanks. Ive been using this video since i was like 11 and im 17 now. i am very forgetful. Thank you for keeping it up :)
Why would you explain basic features like the brush tool and the stabilizer, but then assume the viewer is an expert on advanced topics like clipping groups and the magic wand tool?
because why not
MotionlessMunie It's inconsistent
Yeah lmao
its not really helpful to learn how to shade if you dont teach us how you got to the final product

Devanne Aceves glad i could help.

Cinno AJ youll need a drawing tablet for sai to properly draw with it, Cinno Aj.
Without it you can't make the smooth lineart work in SAI.

ok, thx, ill try this and see if that was the problem

I USED TO COLOR ON THE SAME LAYER WITH MY LINEART AND OH LORD THANK YOU SO MUCH
Oh, look. A legitimately useful tutorial! Gonna have to write down this stuff!
11:33 wait how did you change the shading like that
Thanks, it really did help. Now I can draw pics a lot easier without wasting time on how to figure most of the tools out
im new to drawing with SAI and I keep trying to colour on the layer under the picture I made but it doesn't show up, I think im doing something wrong or I forgot to click on something
Ok, u have ur lineart and u selected a new layer for colouring (normal). U must
Drag
It underneath so that is below the lineart layer :)

I love the colors on this, so cool

(I screamed when i saw ur prof pic )
it would be great if you show some of the function and how to use it (especially on coloring) ... please
Great job! Tutorial about the mode?
+Dark Beauty What do you mean by 'the mode'?
+kel mooney Videos ctrl v
+Vencentio I mean like the changing colors thing you see in the toolbar

Dark Beauty The colour wheel? Or the 'mode' options for layers?
Hello ! I really didn't get how you changed the color of the lineart at the end of the video (12:30).

OMFG. Thank you. So. Much. I've lived my said experience not aware of some of these tools. You have saved me ;u; subbies for you
I've been struggling with shading for quite a while now but this helped allot, thanks! :)
Amazing tutorial! I've been drawing on a app on my phone and I'm finally getting SAI soon, thanks for sharing!
This is the easiest tutorial to follow thus far for me, thank you so much!
How do you do the gradient like on the hair on the head?
Omfg I never knew what preserve opacity meant but that changes EVERYTHING, coloring always took so much time
Oh my gosh thank you for the lessons. I learned the preserve opacity feature from this video because I wanted to learn how to make my line art to match in color!
same with the shading and luminosity
What is painting over the line?
Exactly what is the canvas size? just wandering.
What did you press on 11:57?
Ok i have my art outline but when i go to use the magic tool it highlights the linework and everything in it except whats outside. How do i fix that?
When I use preserve opacity it says locked and it won't work so how can I fix that?
Ok, so you know how when you select the "preserve opacity" tool you can't color outside the lineart layer? Well, for me it's the opposite. I can only color outside the lineart instead of inside. Its rlly frustrating. Do u know what the problem is?
Same for me
It worked when I set "Blending" to 0 on the Brush
the stablizer doesn't slow my brush down, is there another way to fix that?
How do you make your brush of other things thinner
Woah woah woah where did all the gradient come from? I want to know how to do that!
She did a lot of practice , look up for another tut if u want to learn a gradient
unfortunately mine dose not have that preserve opacity option is there an alt?
How did you make your brush taper, I can't find the setting
thank u for the tutorial! I use layerpaint HD on my android and it's very similar to paint tool sai. this helped alot!
Thanks for the tips! I don't have paint tool sai yet, but I plan on getting it when I find the cord to my drawing tablet :)
can you maybe do a tutorial for the whole program? Sorry in new to this stuff q
how do you remove the lines for the magic wand?
The filters make life so much easier
I need to k ow the detail of shading, how to see hue and saturation?
why not shading with back? has it to be blue or purple?
how do I get more brush types? I only have Sketch,Pen,Pixel,Color and Marker ;-;
This tutorial was extremely helpful, thank you!
im confused on shading
You know how to now?
@@GuardianTiger I quit drawing
Once I get my Wacom tablet I can't wait to try out these tips
How do i select brush? It just gives me Sketch, Pen, Color, Eraser, etc. but no brush. Just air brush but thats about it
are you using the free version of sai? if so it doesn't come with all the tool types
Love your drawing style and very very useful video! Helped me quite a bit, so thanks for uploading! :D
may i ask how you select an area like you did at 8:13
+Mariel Escobedo use the magic wand tool while on the lineart layer.
Vencentio oh thank you! ^-^
How come I can't access all the advanced options.
Maybe you dont have the full version..?
how much does the full version cost?
i think it may be like $60 or £50 idk look it up
Because your not advanced.
How do you draw so straight? I can't even draw straight with the stabilizer
I'm confused on the shading. What's the tool you're using when shading?
when im trying to color, it's not letting me use a different color over the purple coloring. do you know why this is happening? :0
Can this be done well with a mouse or touchscreen?
When I put the stabiliser up it doesn't affect how smooth the lines are and I struggle drawing without it anyone have any ideas what's going wrong for me?
This is actually the way of shading I was kinda searching for, I really apreciate you created this video XD

sorry for my idiotic question, but when you use the select tool it always leaves the black/white striped lines on my drawing. You seemed to have gotten rid of it fairly quickly. is there a shortcut key for it?
how do you make the end of the lines less fat at 6:25 ?
Febuaryy AJ It's pressure sensitivity. You need a tablet to use it. For lineart I just have it turned off.
Vencentio oooh ok thanks!!!
That moment when you have a tablet... but the stupid pen is broken ;-;
Try twisting the pen and see if you need to put a battery

The shading layer will color outside of the linework for no reason it's between color layer and line art and in the same clipping group .-.
I have already installed two sai's and none has the "curve"/"line" tool to smooth the lines. You know where can i find?
You can make a new layer using the line tool by clicking the 'New Linework Layer' icon below 'preserve opacity' (next to the new layer icon, it looks the same but has a pen on it)
I hope this is what you mean!
I can't put more than one color on the drawing It's really frustrating can someone please help me? (I have the trial version if that makes a diffrence)
Make sure you're using the pencil tool (the first tool), and not the brush tool.
Thanks, I figured it out before you replied but thanks! :3

same, please help
