- Here's a tutorial explaining how I approach shading & colouring as well as colour theory. This can be useful for beginners as well as anyone that wants to learn some tips about colour. This is just the way I do things - I am definitely not an expert! I hope you will find the video helpful :)

For the record, she just couldn’t zoom in enough. You could still see the red around it and it looked blue by comparison. Find something blue and hold it up to your screen to compare.

If your light is warm , your shadows will be cool
And if your light is cool , your shadows will be warm
(I explained and gave another tip in the replies)
That tip is really useful and made my paintings more interesting and beautiful 👍🏻

This is like a year old but if you're still having trouble I'd recommend sycra's foundations of light and shadow videos, hope you're doing well in your art!
You can also hit up google and find a reference picture :) the best way to learn is do studies.
You need to understand the form you are drawing. When there is a change in planes the light changes too. I can recommend Drawing lessons by the great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale.

honestly i thought the 2nd apple looked weird with the bluish colour, but when you zoomed out it looked much better lol. zooming out is an underrated tip lol
I'm still not happy with the way I demonstrated the apple colours, but I can't change it now haha! Zooming out is one of the best ways to tell if something works or not.

I learned it's best to shade with colors directly on the opposite side of the color wheel like say your shading with red, you would shade with turquoise since it's a complementary
Pixel Minty green is the complementary of red tho. Not terquoise
It's a variation of green I just find tourquoise looks better than just green :,)
Especially with paint. Colour mixing is all about the compliments :)
green is not the complementary of red, so donr worry you were completely right in your original statement. the primary colours are magenta (not red), cyan (light blue) and yellow. the complementary colour of green is magenta, not red.
Sol Holo, those are primary colors of digital painting, not real life.
it's soooo weird. I know how to shade and add a bit of emotion to my traditional artwork, but when I go to do digital art, all my knowledge goes out the window.
Switching to digital is DEFINITELY a learning curve! But if you keep practicing it will feel as natural as traditional.

Tips For Foreshortening:
-The closer the object towards the viewer, the bigger it is
-I reccomend using circles for the joints, like the first rule, the closest joint towards the viewer would be bigger than the joint behind it(I hope it makes sense, I can't explain things very well, Sorry)
Yeah, i met the same tip in another video, and it is really useful, but can get a bit wonky when the foreshortening also has to lead from a bigger object to a smaler one, such as an arm, with a risk of making the entire thing just look like an equally sized chunk :S

Hi Lana RBX! By wacom small tablet then I assume you mean wacom intuos. I would recommend that. Probablya Wacom Intuos Draw or if your more into digital art maybe a Wacom Intuos Art. Or for comics or manga Wacom Intuos Comic. Or for photo editing Wacom Intuos Photo. And finally for 3D art Wacom Intuos 3D (I use wacom intuos art)
shading is THE hardest part about art...
the lineart is harder in my opinion.
Base color/Flat color is harde imho
To me its sketching. With inking and coloring it is much easier but when you are sketching it is very intensive thinking unless you are used to sketching those things.

The thing about sliding the hue as well as saturation was SO HELPFUL!
Full body colouring for her : 14 minutes.
HEAD colouring for me : 3 hours
The apple’s second shading fits what I want my style to be more, but the first apple’s shading is my favorite.

Great tutorial and tips!
I typically like to use warmer hues for highlights and cooler hues for shadows. It feels more natural to me, and I think that's because outside, the sun casts a warm light, but everything is lit a bit blue by the sky itself (even shadows). It's like everything has a slight blu-ish tone except for direct sunlight.
Another tip for artists: study hard vs soft shadows (start by looking at photography). It's always fun to experiment, and you might stumble upon a new technique or approach that you really enjoy!

I've never even considered changing hues before, just tried it in krita real quick and my colour choice didn't look right so there's definitely more I need to practice, but it makes your work look so good!

I just eye dropped the colour and it's a dark cyan-ish colour, hmm.
I'd say it's teal or turquoise, but not everyone describes or sees colors the same way, so it's not a mistake to call it either green or blue. In some cultures for example blue and green are considered the same and are not differentiated. Just how for a long time orange was considered a form of red (or yellow) and didn't became a separately named color until much later (thanks to orange fruits I guess)
Asteria It kind of reminds me of that white and gold dress that was actually blue and black. I was one of the people who saw white and gold! I guess the colours around a specific colour affect how that colour is viewed, as well as each person's specific eyes. It's so fascinating!

Wow I loved this video! Getting into color is so overwhelming but this tutorial made it a lot of fun! Can’t wait to experiment like you showed.
Just started digital art last year and I'm just coloring like normal, using the darker and lighter shade of my base color but this opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities (I dont even use blending modes like multiply lol) I'll definitely subscribe. :)
For the foreshortening, I think her hand should be bigger than that, unless she has reaaaally small hands! Maybe it's juste me, though.

Gelynn, Actually Kebekwa might be right. Judging from the pose, the hand should be a bit bigger than the distance from her chin to the top of her forehead, and on the picture it is a bit smaller than that.

It's all about careful planning and layering. Do multiple thumbnail sketches to figure out where you want your lighting to be, and then translate that onto the final piece. Watercolour, pencil crayon, markers, or pastels (and other things I'm probably forgetting) might work well for that, since the layers can be translucent.

EiSheLL everyone has different art styles, but if you're going for a specific one (like this channel) you could probably just look at their art and get inspired.
Faces can be tricky but if you can get the basics down, it's a lot easier. The best method is drawing a circle (for the skull shape) and two lines. One horizontal for the eye placement, and one down the center of the face (where the nose should be). Whether you're going for realism, semi-realism, or a cartoonish style, this will help you.

2. then add one more dot close but not to far
3. add a curved line at the bottom

that moment when somebody calls something green when it's actually (for me personally) blue. Not complaining, just saying.
It's actually blue, I don't know why I said green! So embarrassing... lol
So I get that you use darker and cooler colours when shading and when you highlight you use warmer, brighter colours. But is the cooler colours=left on the colour wheel and the warmer colour= right on the colour wheel OR is the cooler colours = down and the warmer colours=up? Example: let's say I have GREEN as my local colour, do I go toward yellow for the shadows and toward turquoise/lightblue for the highlights (left/right of the local colour) or do I go towards turquoise/lightblue for the shadows and yellow for the highlights (up/down on the colour wheel)?
ThePillent it would be the other way so turquoise for shadow and yellow for the highlights since shadows usually have a cooler shade such as blue or purple depending on the local color.
Warm colours are red orange yellow and cold is green blue and purple

I use SAI too and it looks different for me as well. It's probably because you can move stuff around to your liking.

It's because it is a different version. Its called Paint Tool Sai version 2 and it has a lot more features. For example, the layer mode at 6:06 you can see that she has a lot more options. ^^

This is some good shit.
I could not hear your fan. But when it is loud, it means the inside of your PC just needs to be cleaned. Get you some q-tips and a vacuum get rid of all the dust inside. Good luck.
I use a cintiq companion 2 (a computer drawing tablet) and one of the biggest complaints/drawbacks is that it has a loud fan. It's been that way since I first bought it, haha. But I'll keep that in mind for future computers. I probably should give it a good dusting anyway. Luckily when I removed the background noise from the audio, most of the fan noise disappeared!

Omg you’re so good!! This was really informative and insightful; I use procreate on iPad Pro, but the functions are sort of similar, especially with the multiply layer and hue. This has been really helpful and I hope to experiment on it! Especially with using not just one hue or color because that’s what I’ve been struggling with the most (i feel like it doesn’t give life if I don’t have more hues)
