James you did awesome on turning dire streets for those people into a feeling of relief, positivity and security.
You were lighthearted and welcoming and that is exactly what they needed to defuse a very stressful situation.
Hats off to you, Captain. **salute**

Nobody can/should watch this without taking a moment to close their eyes a pay respect to James, who so honorably represents the notion of what a sailor should be -- honest, resourceful, kind and courageous -- a Captain Courageous -- A Good-Herated but true Salty Dog.

They always make themselves that they were almost successful just the boat was rocking too much what about the injury beside the mast which they threw away instead of making something out of it , like using grinder and cutting poles out of it for makeshift whatever to keep them moving in the right direction... Typical French, nearly made it just because James turned up they went along ... see my comment about me rescuing another French couple, real ungrateful frogs 🐸 😅

Did you ask, why they never used a floating anchor? Waves go with the winds, sailing boats always drift sideways and this makes it rolly. But with a drifting anchor you can keep the bow or the stern into the wind as you like and reduce rolling... Besides that, a floating anchor saves you in very stormy conditions, so every boat should have one...

Beautiful baby. Congratulations mom and dad. The rescue and this Sailing Zingaro video series will be a permanent part of the essential UA-cam sailing library. Full coverage, every question we might have answered, no nonsense. Every rescuer a future rescued, and everyone rescued a future rescuer. Every sailor knows what was obvious to me a few weeks ago when I saw both BoatUS tow boats in a row towing boats back into the marina. Best wishes for my harbor mates in trouble and the knowledge that eventually that'll probably be me getting towed back in. And the bo'sun in us all is now wondering: What can we add to our boats that would allow us to jury rig a workable mast? (It looked like they bolted the gooseneck to the deck but it didn't work. )

When you help those two other guys learn to sell their boat I would love it if you made it a whole series starting from teaching them how to provision. Like how to provision for a 1-month cruise or two-month cruise. How to do a complete presale boat inspection, inspecting and maintaining all the mechanical parts and the static and running rigging. And not just how to sell their boat but why you are making each adjustment to the running rigging or why you are reefing in, or why you are running one cell versus another cell. And how to do how to train somebody to do a proper night watch. How to do a proper man overboard drill. And what does one have to do to be a crew on your boat?

So for 2 years I have been working on a
" Batonned Pyramidic " Sail system for Ocean crossing vessels in case of a disaster exactly like these folks had.
All you need to attach the system is a Toe-Rail or Stanchion bases.
It allows you to sail all but upwind. ( obviously)
To date we've achieved 4knots in a 41' Morgan out island mastless , in 18-20 knot winds and 2-3ft seas...
Although a ways from perfected , we hope summer of 2024' to have a few dozen kits ready to sell.
The storage bag is 32" long and 18"x18" rounded
Hope we can test it to be 99% reliable in all weather conditions for all scenarios.

easier to abandon someone elses boat.. its a shame, but also if it was your own boat, you may have checked the boat and rigging before attempting a bluewater crossing like this. It looks like they got the mast back on board the boat after it fell. They discarded the mast after a while. The learning is it is good to have a collection of tools, for cutting rigging and a hacksaw for cutting the mast, so it could have been reused. Spare parts and rivets/rivet gun etc are all useful in a scenario like this.

You mark the edge of the inflamed area, if the edge spreads beyond those markers you mark again, it indicates that infection is not under control and gives an idea of of how quickly. If the edge of the inflamed area shrinks away from those marks you don't mark again, it indicates that things are looking fairly good.

I was one of two people on a boat when the mast broke. What caused it was the shroud on the starboard side came out of the spreader arm releasing tension on the starboard side and tension transferred to the port side causing it to collapse to the port side of the boat and into the water.

That had to be horrible, leaving their boat. I spent a year out at sea on a 41 ft sailboat. My husband and I and two children. We expieenced so many issues. But abandoning my boat, would have been heartbreaking. But, glad they are ok. My boat's mast was stepped to the keel. My boat did a 360° and came up fine.

It was the delivery crew that needed to abandon, and even they were torn up about it.

They seem not to share everything about the boat and the context of the accident. The boat must have gone earlier through very hard conditions, like a storm or something if the mast was weak and the engine could not work. Or it was in a poor condition or lack of maintenance from the start. It is very weird that suddenly a healthy boat is falling apart in a good weather without any reason.

My dad and I keep discussing selling our family house (we don’t even live in it anymore bc it’s too big) and buying this Privilege Catamaran for 425k and just living on the water till the money runs out. But stuff like this reminds me that I don’t know anything at all about fixing shit that breaks. Or what to do with stuff like this.

Rent out the house, use the rent as income and buy a much less expensive boat. My wife and I are circumnavigating in a 1970's $20,000, 34 foot boat and that size is fine. While we Iove cruising we know it is not for ever. We can afford to give up cruising at any time or even abandon the boat (in the worse circumstances). Can't tell you how many cruisers we have met that did as you suggest - but, after (say) five years, find themselves trapped, with limited options and getting older (or ill).

@@stephenburnage7687 well I don’t have the current capital to buy a boat. My dad does but honestly he wouldn’t want to do it unless I was all in too. And I can’t sell my current house bc I need my side property. Have my entire biz on it and even tho it runs without me I just don’t have the liquid cash to do anything. But if we sell the family house for market value we did the math and we would each have about $850k before taxes (I don’t know how much exactly the taxes will be) and we would want a good safety net. Also I want a large comfy catamaran so I don’t get boat (cabin) fever. I live in a 900sft tiny house on 7 acres of land rn with my Biz building in the side. I can deal with small spaces but only by myself. I love my dad but if I hear one single snore I’ll yeet his ass off the bow

@@TheBigWanger well. We looked at Sailing Zatara and did the math on a few things. My dad has a solid income that would still be adding to it, along with my biz. Plus it would be a substantial amount to start with. We’d have a solid 20 years even if we had to buy a whole second boat. My dad only has about 10 good working years left so it would be for him to enjoy what he can before he wouldn’t be able to live like that. We have other investments just nothing liquid. I’m not worried about the money aspect, it’s more that I have no fucking idea how to work on a boat or electronics or anything like that. I’m a food scientist and registered dietitian not an engineer

What you have done is really SUPER. And I don't think the captain could do anything about it anymore. They really tried everything. I would have done that myself. It's a shame for him that he got a small abrasion. And I have experience with it myself. You really don't want that. Saltwater and Sun, and a small wound. Greetings from Spakenburg, Netherlands.

Interesting that nothing really happened to bring the mast down, so much so everyone was down below on a watch change, clearly with no concerns about anything. Would seem to have been waiting to happen. And Tom did such a nice job of that wound. What a great guy to have onboard with all that experience.
